ADRIAN'S POV

I entered my office, and for the first time in a while when Miss Maria, my secretary smiled and greeted me, I smiled back. Whether it was in compensation for all the times I hadn't smiled in return or in trying to do a good deed because I was afraid of the outcome of my meeting with the board today, I couldn't tell.

She muttered a good morning to which I replied, before sliding into my chair. Bowing my head in shame, I avoided her eyes, wondering how long it was going to take before the board would send for me.

The person I knew was going to be affected most by the news was Natalie, and I was already sober on her behalf. But how did they know? I had been so careful, I had made sure the transactions didn't reflect at all on the invoices.

But had I been sensible enough to hide my newly acquired assets? No, I had not. I wanted to show off, and I knew that was what was putting me in the mess I was currently in.

“I heard the board will hold a meeting today and they've invited

ADRIAN'S POVI stared at Mr Ravenford in the head chair, and for the first time, I wanted to point out that we were related by blood. I wanted to tell him to save me from this embarrassment that was coming, but he sat still in his chair, watching the proceedings go on without saying a word. “Now Mr Adrian, we're going to start by reviewing some of the financial records from the past year. We've noticed some discrepancies in the company's accounts, especially in the transactions handled by your department. Can you kindly tell us your role and responsibility in managing these accounts?”It was Mr Clemente, the assistant head of the board that was in charge of the questioning, his bald head and beard reflecting how strict he was already. I didn't need to be told that it was going to be a tough session, and I tried to tell myself that I was ready even though I knew deep down that I wasn't.I was perspiring and my heart was thumping wildly in my chest. My hand was very clammy, and my head

TRISTIAN'S POVAfter making sure that Ciara was nowhere near my home, I remained in my room for hours, weighing the weight of my decision and wondering if I had done the right thing. I was still in shock. The news had hit me so hard that even going back to the FCC office was a chore. I could understand the hatred coming from Daniels and Julian, but Ciara? Somebody that I had already imagined a future with?It was unbelievable, it hurt me in the most painful way, and I sat on the bed, staring at the ceiling. My mother came in a few moments later bearing a tray that contained a cake and barbecue chicken wings on it. There was sauce by the side, and even though the food was enticing, I felt tired and too exhausted to eat. This was what Ciara had done to me, this was what she had turned me into.“Tristian? What happened?”I refused to look at her, wondering what telling her was going to change. Was she going to be able to minimize the hurt? Was she going to be able to fill in the vacant

KAYLA'S POVI stared at the man before me, allowing the blue sapphire of his eyes to keep me warm. His jawline was firm, and even though I knew that I wasn't probably in the best frame of mind, I knew that he was very handsome. It didn't matter if I had drunk just a little bit too much, he looked good, and I had to admire that.I found it difficult to choose what was the most beautiful thing about him, if it was his eyes or his name.Tristian Ravenford. It sounded like strength, it sounded like comfort, and I knew at that moment that if he decided to touch me, I wasn't going to object. Coming into the bar, I was craving that strength and that comfort, and if he could offer it, I was willing to grasp it with wide, open arms. “You look exhausted, Kayla. Work related?”I nodded, knowing that if I made an effort to speak, it was going to come out as a croak. His baritone not only made me curious and intrigued, it made me wonder what other exciting parts his body possessed. “Oh, I apo

TRISTIAN'S POVSix years agoThe sun rays filtered through the motel windows and I stood up, eager to close it and shut them out. It was at that moment I noticed that she wasn't in the room, that the young lady I had spent the night with was nowhere to be found. Worried, I entered the bathroom, checking to catch a glimpse of the hair that had had me in my feelings the previous night. She wasn't in the room at all.Alarmed, I flung a bathrobe on top of my briefs and hurried down the stairs, giving the surprised receptionist a hasty look.“Have you seen the young lady I came into this motel with last night?”“Yes sir, she left about an hour ago. She told me you were going to foot the motel bills, sir. So I had to let her go. Any problem?”“No, none at all. Thank you.”I ascended the stairs, asking myself why I was being so caring. She had wanted out, and she had gone out. All she wanted was the one night stand, and I respected her decision. But was that what I wanted? I had felt a conn

KAYLA'S POVSix years ago“My God, Kayla Smith, you have to tell me everything. You stay in my house, I'm literally your landlady now, and I believe I deserve to know everything. My God, look at your eyes. You have the sex glow all over you and you look tired, but in a good way. I knew you were up to something last night, come on, spill.”When I had entered the taxi I used to flee from Tristian Ravenford while he was still asleep at the motel, I had checked my phone and as soon as I saw that I had ten unread messages and fifteen missed calls from Trisha, I knew that I was in for a treat. No matter how hard I tried to lie or twist the truth, she was maintaining her stand as soon as she saw me, smiling hugely and grinning from ear to ear.I didn't even know what to say. I was happy that I had gone out and had a swell time and probably the best sex of my life yet. I was also sad because I knew I didn't need that type of male figure in my life.He was too attractive, too good-looking. He

KAYLA'S POVSix years agoI was telling Trisha everything, but I was leaving out the most interesting detail. Tristian Ravenford had given me the best sex of my life no doubt, but I was not telling my best friend that I had fled from him, that I was afraid of commiting, that he was too attractive, too sexy and much too beautiful to even be an item with me.I focused instead on telling her how active he had been in bed, how he had made sure I enjoyed each and every phase of what we had done, of the activity we had participated in.When I ended the story, she stared at me, an eyebrow raised, perplexed.“So? Tell me you got his number, Kayla Smith.”I groaned because I knew it had been coming to this, that no matter how I tried to avoid it, she was going to hit the nail on the head.“I ran away from the room, Trisha.”Trisha's mouth was open in an instant, the surprise on her facial expression. I swallowed hard, knowing from the onset that this was going to be the toughest part of the co

ADRIAN'S POVSix years agoI was eating the chicken sauce Natalie had prepared, biting and swallowing comfortably when I found her staring at me in an odd manner. I almost threw up. She was scrutinizing me, staring at me with the same eyes everyone at work seemed to be carrying, and I wondered if she knew.“Mr Ravenford called me while I was at work, Adrian.”The silence was deafening. She knew already, and I felt as if I was going to throw up. I held the table for dear life, praying that she wasn't going to start nagging.“He says embezzlement is punishable by law and you might go to jail, Adrian. When you began spending your illegal wealth, what did I tell you, boo? Didn't I tell you to not do anything that was going to hurt our daughter? Didn't I tell you to not do anything that was going to destroy the happiness we shared as a family?”I averted my eyes, my head bent. I had not known peace of mind since the day Mr Ravenford had seemed to discover about the embezzlement and the fac

TRISTIAN'S POVSix years agoThrough the database Kendrick had used in the morning, I knew where Kayla Smith's office was based. Since I couldn't go to her house for fear of her husband, I had decided to go to her office instead. I just wanted to see her one last time, to let her know that all I wanted was the best for her.I wanted to know if what I thought we had shared in the motel was a mistake and if it was okay to move forward. Even though we had just met and bonded for a few hours, I knew that I would give up anything to just spend a few minutes with her. That was why I was in her workplace in my car, I had decided to drive myself, knowing it was better I handled this without Kendrick or any of the staff on the premises. When I saw her leave the building, her hair fluttering because of the light evening breeze, I wanted to run across the parking lot and hug her tightly. I wanted to let her know that even if we had spent only a few hours together, I had missed her a great deal.

All of our lives were returning back to normal.Liam was in school once again, and his story was being turned into a documentary. A writer was also writing it to turn it into a book, it was a beautiful story, a story of survival and determination to survive, to live. I was back at work, but I had a different plan for myself and my son after this case. During the past year while the case had been dragging on, I had used the proceeds of Nova interiors to set up another branch in California. That was my plan. KAYLA'S POVI fell in shock as I watched the life seep out of the man I had come to love. He was bleeding profusely, and from the distant look in his eyes, I could see that he was gradually fading. The gun had fallen from Ciara's hand and she was also bent in worry, her hair soaking up Tristian's blood as she bent to check if he was breathing. I was dumbfounded. I was lost. I was crippled with fear. I didn't know what to do at that moment, I could only pray that Tristian Ravenford didn't die. I couldn't imagine living without him, I couldn't imagine losing him. I was crying now, but I wasn't myself. It seemed I was looking at everything happening from a distance. That was what fear seemed to do to me. Fear was one of my enemies, and anytime it hit me at its fullest, I would suddenly go numb. I was paralyzed by fear. By the fear of death. But at that moment, the paralysis disappeared because a dozen sirens began to sound, and even the huge siren of the ambulance made me wipe my tea

  • The Billionaire's Addiction   Chapter 71

KAYLA'S POVI left the station after Tristian. I wanted to know where he was going. When he kissed me on the forehead, there was something in his eyes, a determined look that told me all I needed to know. He was going somewhere, somewhere dangerous, and he didn't want me to know. For all I knew, the kiss on my forehead was one of farewell. And if I was going to lose my son, I didn't want to lose him too no matter how much I hated the chaos he had brought into my life. That was why I left the station in a taxi, telling the taxi to follow his car. I was afraid for him. I was afraid that he wasn't going to come back to me, afraid of the steely determined expression I had found on his face, of the look in his eyes. I didn't want to lose Tristian Ravenford because I still loved him. And I would do anything to keep that love alive and burning. His car stopped next to a house that had overgrown grass and peeling paint. I stopped the taxi, paying the bald headed driver off and tipping hi

  • The Billionaire's Addiction   Chapter 70

TRISTIAN'S POVI drove out of the police station, my feet on the accelerator. I knew exactly where Ciara's old house was located, and even though I wasn't particularly sure, I felt that she was inside there. My instincts told me so. There was no other place Ciara Hemsworth went to hide when things were tough, and I believed that she was still in that house, probably waiting for the chaos she had created to die down. But why?Why did it have to be Liam? What had I done to Ciara to deserve the hate and the dislike? What had I done, that had deserved Kayla's son being kidnapped, that had almost brought a rift in our relationship and destroyed it?As far as I knew, I had never left Ciara just because I wanted to leave her. I had left her because my life was endangered, because I knew and felt that if she was capable of ganging up with my old friends and stealing my money, then there was nothing she couldn't do to satisfy her greed for money. But why?Why had she gone ahead to try and d

  • The Billionaire's Addiction   Chapter 69

CIARA'S POV I stood next to my car, crouching. I was quite a distance from the apartment I shared with Adrian, but I could see everything that was happening. I had initially wanted to go out, but I had just discovered that I had forgotten the stash of cash I wanted to use in purchasing gas for my car.About four or more police squad cars had filled the yard, and I could see a few policemen come out. A megaphone rented the air, announcing that anyone in the house should come forth. When I saw Adrian come out of the house his hands raised in surrender, my heart skipped a beat. The policemen were all over him in seconds, his body against the squad car. A few officers went inside the house, and I imagined them combing the house, looking for Liam. I nodded grimly. Jokes on them. That was my reason for taking him to the orphanage. It was just as if I had known. It was happening before my eyes. The officers came forth from the house empty-handed. A few questions were thrown to Adrian wh

  • The Billionaire's Addiction   Chapter 68

ADRIAN'S POV I stared at Camila, surprised, hurt and angry. How dare she choose Tristian Ravenford over me? I had been in the meeting for days, the spoils were mine to take. How come she had made the whole shareholders still vote for Tristian over me? I was annoyed. Standing, I addressed them, my hands trembling in anger.Without mincing words, I left the agency, anger coursing through my veins. How was it possible? How had he made it happen?I knew that Camila was once his lover, but how she had successfully maneuvered the decision of the shareholders to favor Tristian Ravenford was beyond me. I saw everything I had planned by trying to get power come crashing down. I wasn't going to get a good lawyer, and I wasn't going to get custody of my daughter.Dejected, I entered the house I now shared with Ciara, surprised to see her eating and not finding Liam anywhere.“Ciara? Where's Liam?”She stared at me, grinning widely.“Didn't you get my text? Him being around wasn't safe. I've ta

  • The Billionaire's Addiction   Chapter 67

KAYLA'S POVComing back home, I noticed Tristan's Porsche in my garage once again. For the record, I knew what he was going through at the moment. I had heard that he hadn't even been going to work anymore. He was going through the same feelings I was going through because of Liam. It was clear as day. Maybe I was treating him quite wrongly, maybe I was treating him unfairly. He had already gone to three private investigators, and most of them had been paid without any results. It was all the same thing. He was sitting on the stairs and stood up when he saw me, his eyes glinting in happiness. His hair was a mess, his shirt was stained and even his beards were unshaven. At that moment, all I wanted to do was hold him. We had been through a lot together, and I knew it was best if I let him come into my house at least for the time being. He sat on the sofa, watching television while I took a shower. When I entered the sitting room, I could see his eyes light up as soon as he saw me in

ADRIAN'S POVI stared at my wife, Natalie. She was stating her terms clearly, and although she had said it before, I couldn't believe it. I was finding it difficult to believe that she meant what she was saying, that she was indeed doing what I thought she was doing. For the past two weeks, I had been so occupied with my role in the Liam abduction that I had absolutely no time for anything else. That meant missing a few of Natalie's calls and texts, and getting back to the house I used to call mine after that period, I was shocked to see everything packed up. Natalie was staring at me, awaiting my reply. She had stated her terms fairly. She wanted a divorce. And she wanted to take custody of our daughter.“Come on, Natalie, come off it.”“There's no coming off anything, Adrian Ravenford. You left the house for two weeks, never returned my calls or texts. Never checked up on your daughter. Never even bothered to ask us how we were faring. And now you hope to see your house in the orde

  • The Billionaire's Addiction   Chapter 65

CIARA'S POVI didn't like the way things were going. It was now a week and Tristian Ravenford wasn't still mine. It drove me crazy, the fact that I might be doing all this in vain, that at the end of the day, he might not even belong to me. He was probably still with Kayla right now, and even thinking about it made me hurt with anger. Adrian on the other hand had started to infiltrate Tristian's agency. Due to the fact that he wasn't coming to work, it was stated in the company rules that within two working weeks, if the head of the shareholders didn't show up, then it was natural for a member of his family to take up the post after a vote. Adrian was going to his agency everyday without Tristian's knowledge, and I knew that it was only a matter of time before he got his heart's desire, before he achieved what he was seeking. And what about me? When was I going to achieve mine?It hurt me and as I stared at Liam, I suddenly realized that the hatred I felt towards him and his mother
