They were seated back in the coffee shop with Jake a few feet away and Magda was starting to get annoyed with him. He’d refused to let Ares walk alone with her to the coffee shop, despite its close proximity and he’d been huffing and puffing since they sat down because it was quite busy for a Saturday morning.
“Ignore him,” Ares said gently as he lifted his coffee cup to his lips. “It’s his job to keep me safe and to be an overbearing asshole to make sure I listen to him. It’s not personal.”
“He checked my handbag.”
“Yes.”
“And told me to power off my phone because he was worried, I’d try to voice record you while we were sitting here.”
“Yes.” Ares chuckled. “Do you know how many journalists pose as women who simply want to have coffee with me?”
“Yes, but I’m not the one chasing you!” she protested. “You d
True to his word, Ares had called her but she’d declined each call. She’d also not answered any of his text messages and even refused to respond to the email he’d sent asking her to call him.Dimi stood in the doorway of her bedroom with a nervous smile, “well I’m off.”“Are you sure you want to do this?” Magda asked her curiously. “You could show up on Monday, tell him you want a divorce and be done with it. Why go through all this?”“Because I know my husband,” she sneered the word, “better than he knows himself. He always despised my pranks and tricks when we were kids. I’m older and my imagination is far more developed. He’s going to tow the company line because he believes in the Lykiaos legend. My dad wants us to give him a grandchild, preferably a son. I need him to hate me and want to divorce me so much he will go against my father and grant me my divorce.”
Stretching in bed in the morning, Magda felt her eyes were blurry and itchy as she rolled onto her belly. Sleep had eluded her late into the night and she had cried like a fool while Jinx the dog had licked her face. The dog had been great comfort in her misery while she’d sulked over what was never going to be. Why Ares Winter was so heavy on her mind and plaguing her heart was beyond her but she’d had an immediate and visceral reaction to him from day one of meeting him in the boardroom and she couldn’t shake it. Now she’d insulted him by calling him a whore and it was weighing on her. He was right. She had judged him for his past sexual experiences. If he had been a woman, she would have been going off about a woman’s right to have as many partners as she wanted but because he was a potential sexual partner for her, she was judging him and him calling her out had her feeling appropriately chastised. She sighed and rolled to her belly and checked her phone.
Ares rubbed his forehead as he waited for Magda to make the next move. He’d fucked up. He hadn’t meant to lose his temper with her but her constant attempts to push him away when he knew, deep down in his soul, they were meant to be together was frustrating as hell. He pulled a drawer open on his desk and looked in as a single knock hit his door.Jake walked into his office and flung himself down on the sofa. “I don’t like being your messenger boy.”“Consider it a punishment for being such an asshat yesterday. You searched her purse. How did she look?”“Tired and sweaty. She was leaving the gym. She was surprised but the look she shot me across the parking lot was something else.” He paused and grinned, “she flipped me off.”Ares chuckled, “she has quite a temper.”“Which makes me worried for you. She could snap and stab you.”Ares grimaced at hi
Arriving home from the Laskaris compound on Monday, Magda felt emotionally raw. Dimi’s family were scary as hell and after a hellish breakfast with her parents and then Dimi having an emotional meltdown in the car from Miklos’ new pursual of her, Magda felt she was carrying the weight of her friend’s sadness. As she exited the car, she noted the personal assistant who had met her outside the gym yesterday standing on her front step. Immediately she bristled with the intrusion of her privacy. How dare they?“What the fuck are you doing at my house?”“Mr. Winter asked me to deliver this,” the woman held out a note, her fingers shaking as she extended it towards Magda as if inherently aware the woman was about to blow.“I don’t give a shit if he asked you to deliver it or not! How the hell did he get my home address and why are you trespassing!” Magda’s emotions were raw and the woman visibly recoiled from Mag’s wrath.“Uh don’t shoot the messenger, Mags,” Dimi called out from behind her
Standing outside the restaurant Magda took three deep breaths and followed the girls in. When Dimi whispered the woman standing beside Ares was one of Miklos’ ex lovers, she felt a pang of annoyance. She couldn’t help but think perhaps he’d done this to fuck with Dimi. Why flaunt her husband’s mistress in her friend’s face? This was horrible and cruel and now she knew he was fighting dirty. Well, she could fight dirty too.She met his gaze directly and saw the cool response on his face. He was pissed off at her. She knew it instantly and she didn’t know why but as she regarded the woman on his arm, she didn’t care. He was purposefully trying to hurt her friend. He was going to pay.His eyes raked her from head to toe, narrowing when she leaned forward just enough to flash a bit of side boob as she rested her clutch on the table.“Eat your heart out, you snake,” she thought viciously.“Ladie
She didn’t care she had makeup on. She splashed cool water on her face and reached blindly for paper towel. The door to the bathroom opened and a hand put the serviette in hers and she offered a meek thank you to the person who had entered. She looked up and saw Ares leaning against the door and she grimaced. “I’m sure the sign on the door says women.”“It does,” he nodded, his eyes pleading. “Can we talk?”“In a restaurant bathroom?” She sneered at him. “No. In fact, not here. Not anywhere.”“I’m sorry.”“You should be.” She forgot herself for a moment and shoved his chest hard, “what kind of fucking games are you playing?”He grabbed her hands and pulled her close, his blue eyes searching hers. “I’m sorry. I panicked. In panicking, I came to a stupid conclusion.”“What conclusion?”&l
He had called her three times after her words to him on the front porch the night prior. He’d called her five times already today. He knew was behaving like a crazed maniacal stalker and he was helpless to stop himself. He suddenly wondered what his mother would say to him for his own behavior. It was Tuesday evening and he didn’t usually meet her on Tuesdays but damned if he didn’t want to go to his mama like a small boy. He grabbed his coat off the coatrack at his office door and walked out of the office.“Ares,” Jake was heading in his direction. “Where are we off to?”“My mother’s,” he grunted at him.Thirty minutes later he was walking up his mother’s front steps and briefly closed his eyes as the feeling of home overwhelmed him. He stepped into the house and felt some of his anxieties melt away. Where his mother was and where he felt his father most, would always remain his favorite p
She was fucking terrified. They were in Miklos’ club and they’d been busted and while Dimi and Darya were tough as nails, she was not. She was shaking like a leaf between her friends while Miklos and Kostas Masalis eyeballed them like they were enemies of the Laskaris family and ready to be punished for their transgressions.First, they’d said they were going to search them as if they were spies for the government and now she’d said too much admitting they were spying to find out if he was fucking a girl in the club and the girls were ready to kill her themselves. She was too drunk. Far too drunk. She’d been trying to drink the misery of her situation with Ares Winter away and too much prosecco later, she was wasted out of her skull. Her feet felt numb and her hands were sweaty. Now the girls brought up she was a virgin in front of Miklos and Kostas and the two men were staring at her as if she were an alien. It was evident Dimi for
CMagda held Ares’ hand as they came down the stairs to the cacophony of lively chattering. It was well after nine and their friends had allowed them to sleep for a long time but eventually Dimitra had enough and she’d burst into their bedroom jumped on the bed and threatened to drag their naked bodies down the stairs.Ares had been annoyed with the intrusion because he said, he’d been happy to simply lay there and watch Magda sleep. Dimi had called him creepy and then had given them five minutes to get their butts down the stairs. When they reached the bottom he grimaced, “I’m really regretting letting them all stay here.”She giggled as she rose on her toes to kiss his pouting lips, “be nice. Eventually they will all go home and it will be only the three of us here,” she paused, “unless you invited my parents to move in, in which case, we need to have words.”He put his ha
Magda giggled as Ares tugged the t-shirt, he’d just put on her, right back off her. He had been such a gentleman to avert his eyes when he’d had her down to her underwear but now his gaze was intense as he surveyed all he had uncovered. He frowned at the lace panties. She knew he was feeling all kinds of emotions knowing she was wearing underwear and clothing another man had bought for her, a man who had admitted wanting her and had even spanked her. He was too respectful to ask the questions she knew he really wanted to ask and she felt very much like she needed to reassure him. He was kneeling between her thighs on the bed, his hands at her hips as he stared down at her and she smiled.“I missed you, my love,” she whispered softly. “All week long, all I kept asking was when could I come home to you.” She tugged one of his hands and pulled him so he was laying atop her again, wrapping her legs around his and holding hi
Chapter 56: Clearing the AirMagda waited as the group of people in the room all exchanged glances and then her mother gave a loud sigh. She cast her mother a stunned side eye. Even her mother appeared to be annoyed with her question. Was her mother on board with murdering her cousin?“Jasper isn’t sane,” Lois said slowly. “We gave her a few options but she was truly quite difficult.”“Mom,” Magda spoke quietly, “she is my cousin, your niece.”“She is my niece but she is insane.” Lois retorted, a flash of her previous controlling attitude coming to surface. “She planned to assassinate you. She deserves all she has coming to her and then some. I would feel sorry for her if she hadn’t been very forthcoming about how much she plotted all of this. This wasn’t a sick person acting out based on chemical imbalances in the brain. She was aware of everything she was doing
Her eyelids felt as if anchors were holding them down and she heard muffled voices as she was carried through the dark of the night into the front door of Ares’ house. Ajax gently lay her onto the sofa. She could hear her mom kneeling right in front of her, felt her brushing her hair off her face.“Magda, please open your eyes. Maybe we should call a doctor,” Lois’ voice was crackling.Magda shook her head and forced her eyes open, “I’m fine. I’m really tired but fine. Mom, I’m so sorry.” She whimpered as she looked into familiar green eyes. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”“Oh sweetheart,” her mother cupped her cheeks, “it’s all my fault. I’m sorry. You have nothing to apologize for. I will make it all up to you. I’m sorry.” Her mother had tears streaming down her cheeks.Magda was fairly certain she had never seen her mother cry be
Magda came down the stairs in the late afternoon hating the way her chest ached. She wanted to go home. Alvar wasn’t allowing her to leave because Jasper had tried to hire an assassin. Jasper. Her cousin. The only person on the planet who could understand what it was like to be subjected to a mother like Lois because she had Lanie. Yet, it would appear the woman hated her for escaping her mother’s thumb. How could a woman Magda loves so much hate her with equal passion? She didn’t understand. It was her cousin and it made no sense and yet, there they were. She wished she could ask her why but she also knew with Dimitra in charge back home, she wasn’t going to tolerate the fact the woman had paid to have her kidnapped and asked for her to be murdered. Dimi was going to take a pound of flesh and then some. She went to the patio and frowned to see nobody sitting there. She looked to the beach and it was also empty, not even the guards which
Lois was out of her chair and in Jasper’s face, yanking her away from Darya with a force Ares was impressed with. She was shaking Jasper hard, making the woman’s head wobble like a bobble-headed toy and she was shrieking at her to tell them where Magda was.He saw Dimitra wave at him to intervene and he shrugged. If Lois wanted to smack the girl around, who was he to stop a family situation? He frowned as Lanie moved in between Lois and Jasper, irritated the woman was putting a stop to Lois’ assault on the woman. However, he was unprepared for Lanie smacking Jasper hard across the face, causing blood to appear on her lip.“She is your cousin, your blood, and your family! How could you? All week long pretending to be concerned and sad when you were behind it all!”Jasper wiped the blood off her mouth and yanked herself away from her mother, “nice, mom. Hitting your pregnant daughter.”“You kidna
Magda woke in the morning, her eyes feeling gritty and tired. She rolled to her side to find Alvar sitting on the edge of her bed.“Creepy much?” she whispered as she pushed her hair off her face.“Good morning,” he smiled softly at her. “How are you feeling this morning?”“Like a barbarian slapped me around and left me to cry in a dungeon.” She glared accusingly.“I apologize for my anger last night. You were warned about being disobedient but I went too far. I am sorry.”“You hit me.”“You’ve been spanked before,” he cupped her cheek gently, his eyes sadly surveying her.“It’s not my kink.” She snapped back glaring at him and when his eyes widened knowingly her mouth fell open as she considered his words. “Oh my god.”He winked at her. “Figure it out?”“You were the one
“She said a man named Alvar?” Ares was confused. “And this guy hates me?” He was trying to tone down how pissed off he was, Dimitra had waited nearly ten hours to tell him Magda had called. She’d called the night before and she had not told anyone until this morning. It was five am and they were in Miklos office at the compound and he was pacing circles. Darya was furious with Dimitra for not calling her right away as well and she was currently sulking in an oversized armchair, swatting at Kostas each time he tried to comfort her. He tore his gaze away from them, “she said the guy who took her has hated me since I was a kid.”“Yes.”“Because I told his cousin to abort our baby and she died during the abortion?” Ares scratched his temple in disbelief.“It’s what she said.”“Dimitra, the only girl I had sex with while in high school, and there was only on
Magda dialed out Dimitra’s cell phone number, her heart pounding so hard in her chest she was certain the guards up the beach and Estella who was watching her from the patio behind her could probably hear it. She had her backs to everyone as she stared over the water.“Dimitra speaking. Who is this and how did you get this number?”“It’s Magda and I have it memorized.”“Holy fuck! Mags. Where are you?”“I don’t know. Is everyone okay?”“We’re fine. We’re trying to locate you. Are you hurt? Injured? Are you safe?”“I’m safe. I’m not hurt. I’m on an island somewhere. I’m being fed and taken care of far better than most kidnapping victims,” she whispered quietly, wiping a tear off her face at the knowledge she had made contact. “A man named Alvar has me. I don’t know his last name or if it&rsquo
