Evelyn’s pov

"I'm afraid there's been a change of plans, Evelyn. You're not here to sign a contract... you're here to become my wife."

Those few sentences made me freeze in my seat. What is going on?

“What?”

“You are becoming my wife this instance!” Adrian repeated himself, “This is the marriage document and the other is the contract which if you look at us signed by me. You just need to sign and we are married.”

“But…but, that was not the agreement!” I said in a low tone as I stared at the two contracts.

“I spoke with your dad and he was okay with the change. So when you sign, the wedding will be held this weekend.” Adrian spoke, I looked up at him with tears-filled eyes but he wasn’t moved a bit.

He passed me a pen “sign!”

I took the pen with shaky hands, my heart pounding in my chest as I remembered my dad’s words “DONT COME BACK WITHOUT THE CONTRACT!” I swallowed hard, and with a heavy heart, I signed the document.

“Good.” He pressed the intercom and a few minutes later a man who walked me from the elevator entered.

He handed me two documents and gave two of his copies to the assistant whose name I found out was Evans.

Evans walked out with the contract, “Well…Evelyn, we are officially married. Tomorrow Evans will be over to get you and your stuff.”

“Where am I going?” I asked with my head down, trying so hard to avoid his gaze.

“You are moving in with me! I own you now!” Adrian’s voice was filled with spite and hatred. I shivered at the thought of being a wife to this cold and wicked person.

“Just get one thing straight, Evelyn, I don't love you, I would never love you.” Every word was like ice spares piercing through my heart, “This sham called marriage is because your dad used you in exchange for his debts, so if you think this was a happy ever after….. don't think about it.”

I swallowed, using the last courage I had to stare him in his eyes “I don’t expect anything from the ice king!”

I stood up, not waiting for him to respond. I walked out of the office as fast as I could. Tears stained my cheeks. I stared at the floor, as I walked out of the elevator, my headphones booming my comfort song.

I bumped into someone head-on. I looked up to see a god-sent angel in the form of a human in front of me and she was glaring at me.

“Watch where you are going, bitch!” She said and I was stunned, guessing the angel was a devil.

“Hmmm…. I’m sorry!” I bent down and picked up her scarf which I passed to her as she snatched it from my hands.

She stared at me, her eyes roamed my body and her face had a disgusted look.

“Who let you in here? Are you sure you are not a thief?” I was taken aback. What’s with today and everyone accusing me of things I have no idea about?

“Wait, what….no I’m not!” I defended myself.

“We would see about that…..Security!” The lady screamed as I rolled my eyes and sighed.

“No need for that, I’m already out the door,” I said and walked past her. I could feel her staring but I could care less.

I walked up to my car and drove out of the company. My life was in pieces and the last thing I wanted to do was to go back to the toxic place I call my home.

I chuckled, I should be happy to leave that hell of a place but where I was moving to was worse—-as I remember the cold words used by Adrian.

“Sigh….guess life is not a bed of roses.”

“I don’t expect anything from the ice king” I heard her say and she picked up the contract and walked out, leaving me speechless

“Don’t think much of it. She is a stepping stone, which means I’m closer to my plans. Richard, you would regret having to cross paths with me.”

I opened my laptop to get some work done but the more I worked, the sad face of Evelyn was smeared in my mind.

A few minutes later, my door flew open. I looked up to see Victoria—-my ex-girlfriend, walking into the office. Her hips sway side by side, her face packed with makeup and her hair perfectly done.

Victoria walked up to my desk, a sly smile spreading across her face. "Well, well, well. Look what we have here," she said, her eyes scanning the room.

I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Victoria. What brings you here?"

She leaned against the desk, her eyes locked on mine. "I heard you're getting married," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

I nodded, my expression neutral. "Yes. I am."

Victoria's eyes narrowed. "To that...girl?" she spat out the words.

I sighed, rubbing my temples. "Victoria, what do you want?"

She pushed off the desk, her eyes flashing with anger. "I want to know why you're settling for someone like her. She's nothing but a poor, pathetic girl from a poor family."

I stood up, my eyes locked on hers. "That's enough, Victoria. You have no right to speak about Evelyn like that."

Victoria's eyes widened in surprise, but she quickly regained her composure. "Fine. I'll leave. But mark my words, Adrian. You're making a huge mistake by marrying her."

With that, she turned and stormed out of the office, leaving me feeling uneasy. I sat back down, my mind racing with thoughts of Evelyn and Victoria. Why did Victoria care so much about who I married? And what did she mean by "you're making a huge mistake"?

I closed my laptop, I couldn’t concentrate. I need a change of scenery and some drink. My plans for the Carters were just the beginning and I won’t let some girl change years of planning.
