༺RAYNE༻
My eyes open groggily to find a man in a white coat standing next to me. I take in my surroundings. I inhale a deep breath when it dawns on me that I'm in a hospital. How did I get here? “Hello, Miss Sullivan,” the doctor speaks, observing me. “How long have I been out?” I mumble. “Just a few hours,” he responds. “It appears you have severe diabetes, type 1 diabetes to be exact. Your blood sugar levels were critically low but we got it under control. It seems you've been neglecting your treatment and it took a toll on your body.” I've been expecting this to happen but I dreaded it. I've got no money for my insulin injections and other medications. “How did I get here?” “A man brought you in this morning. He goes by the name Liam Everhart. He covered all of your expenses and paid for your follow-up treatment and medications. He's quite concerned about your health.” The mention of Liam's name takes me by surprise. He really paid for all of this? Why would he? He'd been so cold and angry this morning. I'm grateful he helped me out but I'm slightly angry at myself because now I'll feel indebted to him. “Thank you, doctor,” I manage to say. “When can I leave?” “Tomorrow morning. You'll need to come back for checkups and follow-up tests. It's important that you take care of yourself, Miss Sullivan.” The following morning, I'm discharged from the hospital. I go to the motel where I'm staying to freshen up and maybe head to work. Just outside the motel, a familiar voice stops me dead in my tracks. “Rayne? Oh my God! Is that you?” Hallie sashays to where I'm standing and chuckles. “It really is you! Wow, so it's true. My brother dumped you and kicked you to the slums where you belong.” “Leave me alone, Hallie,” I mutter, turning my back to face her. Hallie is Henry's younger twin sister. She never liked me, didn't think I was good enough for her brother. She wasn't even present at the wedding. She moves to stand in front of me. “I don't know what Henry saw in you in the first place. But I'm glad he finally saw you for the gold-digging filth that you are.” Hallie shifts her gaze to the motel. “Is this where you stay now?” She cackles. “You've really hit rock bottom. I never thought I'd see this day. I have to say, Rayne, this place really suits you. It's befitting of a penniless tramp.” I've had enough. I take a deep breath and look her straight in the eye. “At least I don't have to rely on my family's name to get by. Aren't you still living off your daddy's money, Hallie? What have you ever accomplished on your own?” “How dare you!” she spits out. “Like you weren't living off my brother's money. And I'll have you know, I'm a successful businesswoman!” “Really? What business is that? Acting like a stupid bitch and causing drama wherever you go like a classless skunk?” “You're just jealous of me, Rayne. You always have been. You're a nobody and you'll always be a nobody.” I smile, a sweet, sugary smile. “At least I'm not a pathetic, attention-seeking, entitled brat like you, Hallie. That's worth more than any amount of money or status.” I leave her standing there, with an ugly, angry stare lingering behind me. I'd always kept quiet when Hallie talked down on me. But only out of respect for Henry. If she ever crosses paths with me again, I won't hold back. I go inside the motel and I'm shocked when I see all of my stuff in the lobby. My bag and my clothes are scattered all over the floor. I see the owner, Mr Dennis glaring at me with his beady eyes. “I told you this was a motel, not a charity home, Rayne. You're overdue with your payment and I'm not letting you stay here anymore. Pay up or get out!” Oh no! This can't be happening! “Please, Mr Dennis, I need more time. My job hasn't paid me yet and I'm—” “Spare me the sob stories!” Mr Dennis yells, cutting me off. “You've got no money? Then get the fuck out of my motel!” I keep pleading with him to let me stay here for a while until I can get enough money to look for some place else. But he refuses. I'm on the verge of crying and dropping to my knees when Mr Dennis goes silent. It seems he's suddenly taken pity on me. He bridges the space between us and the anger on his face vanishes. “Actually, Rayne,“ he says in a low voice, “I might have another idea.” “Huh?” “If you don't have the money to pay me, you could always make it up to me...in other ways. And I'd let you stay here for as long as you want.” I freeze and stare hard at him. His hand slowly reaches for my breast and before I know it, he's cupping me. In a flash, I slap him hard across the face. “Don't touch me, you disgusting pig!” I scream. He touches his cheek, his eyes shooting daggers at me. “You bitch!” He raises his hand to hit me and I flinch, cowering backwards. But then someone yells from behind me. “Lay a finger on her and you're dead!” I whip around to see Mr Everhart standing at the entrance. What's he doing here? “And who the fuck are you supposed to be?” Dennis growls. “What is she to you?” “That's none of your business.” “Oh, it is my business, all right. This place belongs to me. And I will do whatever—” Mr Everhart's bodyguard marches towards Dennis and grips his arm. He twists it behind his back, leaving the poor man crying. And then he swiftly knocks him to the ground, his arm now seemingly broken. “This is madness! I'm going to call the cops!” Dennis cries. There's a crowd forming in the lobby now. Mr Everhart replies in a calm and cool manner, “Go ahead and call them. I'm sure they'll be more than interested to hear about all of the illegal activities going on here—sex trafficking, drug sales, money laundering.” Mr Dennis pales, his eyes darting left and right, now clearly terrified. He stammers, “Please, I...I... didn't mean to cause any trouble. I was only—” “Save it. I've heard enough,” Mr Everhart snaps and then turns to me. “Let's go.” I have no idea what's going on. To say I'm shocked would be an understatement. The bodyguard picks up my belongings from the lobby and gestures for me to go ahead. I follow Mr Everhart to his car. “Get in,” he orders. I obey and settle in the backseat of the luxurious car. He did come to my rescue, twice in two days. He sits beside me and then the car zooms off. We sit in silence. Occasionally, I throw glances his way. He may be the same person but he's nothing like the man I slept with. He's colder, much more serious and grim. It's like he's incapable of feeling any emotion other than anger and indifference. I know for sure he remembers what happened between us but he's intent on pretending. But that's not my concern right now. A million thoughts are running through my mind. Why is he here? How did he know where I was? And why did he go out of his way to help me? What does he want exactly? I can't keep quiet anymore. I'm anxious and curious to know what's happening. “Mr Everhart,” I peep out. “Thank you for helping me. And thank you for yesterday. I promise to pay back as soon as I get the money.” No response. “Um, how did you know I was staying at that motel?” Still no response. He doesn't even spare me a glimpse. “Where are you taking me?” And of course, no response. I let out a frustrated grunt. Is this man for real? I'm starting to feel irked and angry. He's deliberately ignoring me. I'm about to speak again when he finally breaks the silence. “You don't need to pay me back.” His voice is flat and emotionless. “Okayyyy. And where are we—” The bodyguard's voice interrupts me, “We've reached city hall, boss.” I gasp and stare through the window. “City hall? Why have you brought me here?” Mr Everhart finally looks at me and leans closer. Too close, I breathe in his cologne. “I've given this a lot of thought, Miss Sullivan. You're sick and homeless.” Yeah, like I didn't already know that. “You need money badly. And I've got more than enough to spare,” he adds, reaching for a document. “What has that got to do with you bringing me here?” “Miss Sullivan,” he heaves and pauses for a while before saying, “We're getting married.”༺RAYNE༻ I blink once, my mouth parting wide open. I blink again, my eyes roaming over Mr Everhart’s face. And in that instant, I burst into a loud, hearty laugh. Heaven knows I haven’t laughed this hard in ages. “Oh, Mr Everhart, I didn’t realize you had a sense of humour,” I say, shaking my head as my laugh fades into a low chuckle. Mr Everhart glares at me, one of his eyebrows wrinkled. “Excuse me?” My chuckle wears off into a half smile. “I’m sorry… It’s just… What you said is very funny.” His lips twist into a frown and his jaw tightens. He stares me down like a man assessing some secondhand goods, wondering whether they’re worth the price on them. The stern look on his face makes me buckle up. I clear my throat and adjust my sitting position, moving slightly away from him. He doesn’t tear his gaze from me and it’s making me really uncomfortable now. “What do you take me for? A clown? A stand-up comedian?” he snarls. I open my mouth to speak but nothing comes out. I
༺RAYNE༻ I’m temporarily lost for words and I’m certain my face must’ve twisted in shock like a clown in a kid’s birthday party. My jaw slackens and my eyes probably look like they’re ready to pop out of their sockets. “$10 million?!” I say in a squeak, my mouth instantly watering. Mr Everhart nods. I snatch the papers I’d tossed and begin skimming through them like a hawk. And then I see it written in bold—$10,000,000. How on earth did I skip this? That’s such a ridiculously large amount. I can’t believe he’s willing to throw it away just like that. This marriage must really mean that much to him. He must be desperate or crazy—or both. But why me? Mr Everhart carries on, still calm as ever. “And that’s not even counting the other perks that come with being my wife. Lifetime health insurance, a generous monthly stipend,” he pauses and then adds, “basically anything you want. All you have to do is be my wife for one year.” My heart starts beating like a marching band. I bite my l
༺RAYNE༻ Liam takes me from city hall to his house, a ridiculously huge mansion in the upper east side of New York City, the part of town where only the super-duper rich people live. I can't stop myself from staring at the place. It's breathtaking. “If you're done gawking, you can come inside now.” Liam's irritating voice ruins the moment for me. Ugh! He's so annoying and so arrogant! I roll my eyes at his back and stick my tongue out when he's not looking. He walks ahead of me while his bodyguard is just right behind me like a big, burly watchdog. I follow Liam up the beautiful sweeping staircase at the entrance and through the large wooden doors. As soon as I step inside the foyer, I gasp like a goldfish out of water. The mansion is a billionaire’s paradise! My eyes dance all over the place, admiring the interior and I walk further into the living room. There are quite a lot of chandeliers, all glittering like magical, light-up disco balls. The artwork on the walls looks like i
༺RAYNE༻“Get ready. We’re going shopping,” Liam informs me, not even meeting my gaze. He turns his back to me and mutters something to Derek, his bodyguard.I nod as if he can see me and go to my room to get changed. I pick a plain black dress from my bag, slip it on and glare into the mirror. Satisfied with my simple look, I stride to the living room where I find Liam on the phone waiting for me.His eyes rake my body slowly as he gets off the phone. “Let’s go,” he gruffs, leading the way to the garage. It’s very spacious, with a wide collection of luxury cars―Mercedes Benz, Rolls Royce Cullinan, Bugatti Veyron and others I’m not very familiar with. He opts for his BMW and lets me get in first. It’s been three days since I began living with Liam and I have to say it’s been pretty great. Although I didn’t see much of him, I kept myself occupied with exploring the house, stuffing my faces in delicious food and stuff like that.I haven’t really spoken to Liam since the day I got here. B
༺RAYNE༻ Liam takes a hold of my arm and yanks me towards him. Still gripping my arm, he spins me, causing me to back him. And then he leans downwards, his body close enough that I can feel his heat seeping into me. I shiver when his hot breath fans my ear. He holds my blonde hair in a handful and pushes it to one side, leaving the other side of my neck bare. His fingers slowly trail patterns across my shoulders and work their way to my neck. His touch turns me into a puddle of molten desire. My body freezes for a moment and I'm unable to make sense of what's happening. Liam brings his fingers to my arm, grazing my skin upwards while lowering his face to mine from behind. And his breath. Oh my God, his breath on my neck makes goosebumps dance along my skin like excited children. I think he's going to do what he said he'd do. The thought is awfully thrilling but terrifying at the same time. I don't want him thinking he can get in between my legs whenever he wants. I'm still a person
༺RAYNE༻ Liam reaches where I'm standing and it's like he senses the tension because he immediately snakes his arm around my waist. I smile at him and lean into his chest. Hallie and her bimbos' faces all turn pale, their jaws dropping wide open and their eyes stretching even wider. I wish I could savour the look on their faces forever! “Is there a problem, babe?” Liam's eyes dart between me and the trio of bitter has-beens. I shake my head and cling to Liam even more, slithering my hand, the one with the diamond, on his chest. The trio follow my every movement, too stunned to even utter a single word. I was right when I said I had a talent for shutting bitches up. “There's no problem, darling,” I purr, smiling sweetly at my fiancé. “I was just telling these girls about your exquisite taste in jewellery. I mean, look at this beauty!” I'm doing it again! Flashing my ring at them, that is. One of Hallie's clones gasps. “No way! No freaking way! You're Liam Everhart!” Liam stares
༺RAYNE༻ “Oh my God! It's Liam Everhart!” “That's Liam Everhart!” “Is he really here? I can't believe this!” The paparazzi and the rest of the people go nuts as soon as Liam steps out of the limo, his bodyguards swarming around him. Why am I not surprised? Liam barely attends these events and rarely ever grants interviews. I bet the press have been dying to catch him at an event like this. Liam adjusts his suit—a black Tom Ford tuxedo, fitted and sleek. I'm still sitting in the limousine, watching him and the wild crowd. I suck in a heavy breath, going over everything Liam told me like a kid rehearsing before a big performance. He has been schooling me on how to walk, talk and even think like the people of his status. He's practically taught me everything I need to know including the important details about the Everhart family. I know all of his family members now and even what they look like. Liam backs the paparazzi and turns to me. He offers me his hand and gives me a tight-l
༺RAYNE༻ “Now remember, my grandfather can be quite intimidating. He doesn't like people who are tardy, those who do not listen attentively or those who make mistakes. He does, however, appreciate punctuality, respect and seriousness. So, when you meet him, pay close attention and avoid making any mistakes. Got it?” “Got it,” I say weakly, trying to keep up with the rules Liam is bombarding me with. We're in his car, on our way to Lucas Everhart's estate where we'll be having a family dinner with his grandfather and Liam's cousins. Liam is going to introduce me to Lucas and seek his blessings for our 'marriage'. Sounds like a lot of effort for something that'll end after a year. “First impressions are everything to him,” Liam continues. “So you must make a good impression. Greet him with a firm handshake, make eye contact and maintain polite behaviour throughout the conversation. Do not bring up any sensitive topic like politics or religion. He's an atheist and he detests polit
༺RAYNE༻ Liam catches me from behind and wraps his big arms around me, his lips finding their way to my neck. My lips curve into a full smile and I lean back against him, my hand instinctively reaching up to hold his head. My heart does a triple flip, like a gymnast performing an impossible routine. It’s always been like this—this magnetic pull between us, the chemistry that could launch a thousand ships. He's really here. “Liam?” I breathe, not quite believing my eyes (or ears). I mean, how can this be? He's not back until two months from now. That's what he told me. But now, here he is, arms wrapped around me and smelling like home. He chuckles against my neck, his lips tickling the skin. “Surprise.” “Daddy!” Lucas squeals as if only just seeing him. Liam's arms tear away from me and spread out to our son as he leans down. Lucas jumps into his arms, giggling like a little maniac. Liam lifts him up and tosses him up a bit, making the kid laugh even harder. I just smile at the
༺RAYNE༻ FOUR YEARS LATER... “Lucas! Get down from the couch right now!” I shout, trying to catch my son's attention as he climbs and jumps around on the furniture in our living room. My little ball of energy is at it again. He acts like the house is his personal jungle gym, always trying to give me a heart attack with his death-defying antics. It's like he thinks he's part monkey. “No, Mummy! King of the mountain!” he booms, smiling and puffing his chest. “Lucas! You're going to break something, either the furniture or yourself! Get down, this instant!” I sprint across the living room, my feet pounding the marble floor. Lucas' loud giggles fills the room when he darts to the left, his brown hair bouncing with each jump. Just as I think I've got him cornered, he leaps on the coffee table and uses it as a springboard to launch himself on the floor. I swoop down, arms outstretched but he's too quick. He zigzags around the couch cushion, his grey eyes glinting. “Look, Mummy!” He's
༺LIAM༻ “You'll only get it over our dead bodies,” a voice booms from the shadows, making everyone snap their heads in that direction. Finally. They're here. Thanks to the distraction, I snatch the gun from the fucker who's supposed to keep me in check and point it at him. He staggers backwards, his hands up in surrender when I point it at him. “Took you long enough,” I say to none other than Daniel and Leo as they walk in. Both their heads are held high, shoulders straight and their faces contorted in rage. They take their places at my sides, flanking me. Sabrina's goons all aim at us, ready to fire but none of us are fazed. “Better late than never,” Daniel replies, his furious gaze darting between Sabrina and Oscar. “You turned out to be a bottom-feeding leech after all, Oscar, a worthless nobody, like I thought you were from the very first day I saw you. But I never would've thought that you were Sabrina's pussy-munching weasel, feeding off her cunt and her scraps just to kee
༺LIAM༻ “I'm here,” I rasp, holding my phone to my ear and staring at the papers in my hand. I've just gotten out of my car, now in front of a crumbling shithole of a building that's barely standing. It's the location I was given. It seems like a rat-infested dump with broken windows, rusty metal beams, and a door that looks like it hasn't been opened in years. There are overgrown weeds and trash around it, the perfect hideout for the sick fuck who's got my wife. I can't fucking believe that they'd bring Rayne to this shithole of a place. It makes my blood boil. The son of a bitch on the other end of the line, the same altered, robotic voice, chuckles and then replies, “Good. Now follow the lights inside. Walk straight, don't look around.” I do what I'm told. Not because I'm scared, but because they’ll harm Rayne if I don't. It's the only reason I'm not charging in and getting my wife out. It's the only reason I'm not burning this building down to the ground. And it's the sa
༺RAYNE༻Fuck! My head hurts! That stupid bodyguard hit me hard on my cheek with his freaking sledgehammer of a fist. I fell and hit my head on the ground. I can swear I heard my own brain rattle against my skull.I'd kicked him in his groin while trying to get away and that's what earned me the slap that knocked me out cold. Thankfully, my baby is safe, or so I pray, since I don't feel any sharp pains.Opening my eyes, I realize that I've been brought to an unknown room with dingy walls and a single flickering light. I'm tied to a chair with ropes too thick and rough to slip out of.How long have I been out? And Liam! I know he's definitely looking for me right now. My heart squeezes painfully at the thought that I might not make it out of here alive. That I might never see him again.I'm scared for myself and for my baby. ༺LIAM༻ “We've searched the entire building, boss. We couldn't find her.” Another useless report. I drive my fist into the nearest wall and clench my teeth as I feel my knuckles burn from the impact. This is nothing though, compared to the pain of not being able to find my wife. And my unborn child. “What do you mean you couldn't find her?” I glare at the imbeciles in front of me. “She's in the goddamn hospital, not a fucking maze! How hard is it to track down one woman?” The men around me look down, avoiding eye contact like a bunch of fucking idiots. Useless, every last one of them. I don't even know why I bother wasting my time with these incompetent fools. “Get out of my sight!” I bark at them. Pacing like a caged animal, with my fists clenched and my hair ruffled, my mind is going all ape-shit with worry. I'm losing my mind, in fact! Everything was fine minutes ago. Rayne went back to my grandfather's room to get her purse while I answered a call from the office. I stayed
༺RAYNE༻ Lucas Everhart. The man who took Liam as his own and raised him to be the confident and successful man he is today. That same man is actually my grandfather, my only living blood relative. It still sounds unbelievable. I'm sitting beside him, holding his hand in mine and watching his chest gently expand and contract. The hospital monitors are tracking his every heartbeat. There are so many tubes and wires attached to him. The sight is heart-wrenching. “I just found you,” my voice breaks in a fragile whisper, “please don't leave me now. You can't.” This man has been kind to me since day one and now that I know I'm his granddaughter, I feel a deep connection to him. But Lucas... He's always felt that kind of connection to me. It's like he sensed it all along. Even Liam was stunned by how Lucas treated me. I still remember the old man's reaction the very first time he laid his eyes on me. He froze, wide-eyed and dropped his cane. Then he told me I looked familiar and asked
༺RAYNE༻ “Do you remember what Dr Gareth said about your HLA compatibility with Grandfather?” Liam asks, after keeping me in suspense for almost a minute. I nod and muse, “Yes, he said I was an exact match, 10/10 HLA compatibility, which is extremely rare, especially since we're not biologically related.” That's exactly how the doctor said it. But I don't understand why Liam's suddenly interested in that. Could it be that the doctors made a mistake and the transplant wasn't successful, like we all thought and Lucas' condition is worsening? Oh God! “What has that got to do with what you're about to tell me, Liam? Did the doctors find something abnormal in the tests they ran after the transplant, something that changes everything?” That has to be the only explanation. It's Liam's turn to nod. “Yes but it's not what you think. It's a lot more complicated. I don't even know how it's fucking possible.” He sighs and clasps both of his hands around mine. “Rayne, you're not who you thin
༺RAYNE༻ “Well, Doctor? What does it say?” My anxiety is killing me. Despite Liam's refusal and the doctor's warnings, I got tested for the bone marrow transplant. The results are out, apparently and Dr Gareth has been frozen since he summoned us all. “Are you going to speak or not?” Liam's impatient, angry voice snaps, making Dr Gareth almost jump. “Come on, doc, spill it already!” The doctor lifts his eyes from the reports and stares at me. “Ma'am, the results indicate that you are a match.” A loud gasp tears out of my lips. Even though I hoped I'd be a match, it's so hard to believe it. I'm an actual match! Liam's eyes are too wide, he's having a harder time believing it. And the same goes for the rest of the family. None of them can process it either—they're all stuck in shock, staring at me like I'm the miracle they never thought would happen. And I am. “Did you just say that my wife is a match?” Liam's face crumples. Dr Gareth nods in astonishment. “Yes, that's right. And
