“Welcome, Mr DaCosta,” said Laura with a big smile as she ushered Tony into the house.
“Thank you, Mr Harrison. Please, call me Tony,” he said graciously.
He was dressed formally in a dark suit with a crisp white shirt and a dark patterned tie.
John was waiting in the hallway to greet Tony. He cleared his throat self-consciously and extended his right hand to the man he’d kicked out of his home barely a week ago.
“Welcome back to my home,” John said almost grudgingly.
“Thank you for inviting me,” said Tony, accepting John’s handshake. He noted how the other man’s grip nearly misaligned his fingers but he wasn’t offended.
“Please, come with me. Kate is waiting in the living room,” John said and led the way.
Once they entered the living room, Kate rose to her feet but did not step forward to greet Tony. She was dressed in a grey frock and her freshly washed hair billowed about her shoulders like a lion’s mane.
For a moment, Tony was spellbound by Kate’s natural beauty. She wasn’t wearing makeup right now, but she was incredibly stunning. Her skin shone like a polished ornament. It was as if he was seeing her for the first time.
Her winged brows stood proudly above brown almond-shaped eyes, framed with a generous row of full eyelashes. Her Nubian nose was bordered by prominent cheekbones. And then there were her lips… full, luscious, and… pursed at the moment.
“Ehem!” John coughed loudly to interrupt Tony’s silent admiration of his daughter.
“Good afternoon, Mr DaCosta,” Kate greeted him formally.
Tony smiled and said, “Good afternoon, Miss Harrison. Pardon me for gawking at you so rudely. You simply look exceptionally beautiful today.”
“In this ugly dress?” Kate asked with a raised eyebrow. She wasn’t buying his lavish compliment.
“Trust me, you would still look breathtaking in a sack,” Tony joked but nobody laughed. He cleared his throat and waited to be offered a seat.
“Please, sit down,” said Laura, indicating the chair adjacent to the one Kate was sitting on before. “Would you like a cup of coffee or tea?”
“No, thank you, Mrs Harrison. I’d just had lunch before coming here,” Tony answered.
Everyone sat down. There was a minute or two of awkward silence before John spoke.
“Let me first apologize for how things ended the last time you were here, Mr DaCosta. It’s just that, your proposal caught me off-guard. I was still reeling from the shock of suddenly finding out that my daughter was pregnant.”
“You don’t have to apologize. I completely understand,” Tony said warmly.
“I’m glad to hear that,” said John. “Now, I’d like to apologize for dragging you away from your business in Chicago to come here to see us. I know you are a very busy man, so I’d like to thank you for responding positively to our invitation. I owe Mayor Wallace one for helping me get across to you.”
“You don’t have to apologize for inviting me here. I was going to come anyway. I have unfinished business here,” Tony explained.
John took a deep breath and said, “Now, let’s get to the heart of the matter and talk about why you are here. As you already know, my daughter here, got pregnant by her boyfriend who has already left the town to pursue his MBA program in Michigan.
“I know that we live in an era where it has become glamorous for young women to get pregnant out of wedlock and raise their children alone. I understand that different circumstances would require some women to raise their kids alone, but I don’t want that for my daughter. Yes, she has made a mistake, but my wife and I believe that the situation can still be salvaged discreetly.”
John paused so that the implication of the last word he said would settle in Tony’s mind.
“Go on,” Tony prompted him, although he knew where this conversation was headed.
“As you can see,” John continued. “We live in a small town filled with very religious and sometimes, judgmental people. Well, I’m sure you already know that’s typical with small communities, right?”
“Yes, I know,” Tony answered calmly, waiting for John to get to the main point of this meeting.
“You see, my position as a clergy in this town requires that my family and I must hold ourselves to the utmost moral standards obtainable,” John explained. “But as it stands now, my daughter’s little indiscretion has disrupted that moral code that sets us apart from others.”
Kate didn’t like being talked about as if she wasn’t there, but there wasn’t anything she could do about it. Her mother had instructed her to remain quiet and let her father do the talking.
It had taken a lot of convincing from her mother to get her dad to agree to this meeting. Kate didn’t like how her dad was struggling to explain the situation to Tony, who clearly had it all figured out. After all, he was here when she broke the news of her pregnancy to her parents.
“As I said before, I was caught off guard when you proposed to marry my daughter,” John continued. “I presume you might understand why I reacted to that proposal the way I did. We barely know anything about you apart from what you’ve told us and the little information my wife has been able to glean from the internet.”
“I’m sure you didn’t find much about me on the internet either,” Tony said with an understanding smile.
“That’s true,”’ said Laura. “We could barely find even a recent photo of you.”
“That’s deliberate,” Tony confessed. “After my wife passed away three years ago, I became some sort of a recluse. I only recently became active in the business again.”
“I’m sorry to hear about your wife’s passing,” Laura said sympathetically while John mumbled his agreement. “Do you mind telling us what happened to her?”
“I don’t mind at all,” said Tony. “She died of ovarian cancer. We got to know about it too late. Hers was particularly aggressive. She passed away within a few months of the diagnosis.”
“That must have been rough,” John said with genuine sympathy.
“It was,” Tony admitted with a sad smile. “Remembering that time doesn’t hurt so much anymore. I guess time truly does heal everything.”
Seeing this side of Tony reduced Kate’s resentment towards him. She still didn’t like him, but she could see that he was an actual human being with feelings and not just a rich robotic man.
The possibility of Kate agreeing to marry Tony was increasing with every passing minute as she listened to him answering her parents' questions confidently. The man seemed like an open book and Kate hoped that indeed he was, because whatever she decided after this meeting would seriously impact the rest of her life.
There was a brief silence after Tony’s response to the question of his wife’s death. It made the atmosphere in the living room a bit gloomy.“We also know that you have children,” said Laura, steering the conversation away from its depressing detour.“Yes, that’s correct,” Tony said without missing a beat. “I have a daughter, who is around Kate’s age, and a son who is two years younger.”“Do you still want to marry my daughter?” John asked him point blank.“If you would let me, yes,” Tony responded without hesitation.“Why would you want to marry a girl who is the same age as your daughter?” John inquired almost angrily.“First of all, Mr Harrison, your daughter is not a girl,” Tony began in a level tone. “Your daughter is a young woman who has found herself in a sticky situation which has indirectly affected you and your wife. I
“You’re getting married?” Chris asked incredulously on the phone.“Yes, that’s what I said,” Kate answered blandly.“Wow… I didn’t know you were into him that much,” Chris said with disappointment. “I mean I know you guys have been together for like a year now, but I never thought you’d actually marry him.”“What are you talking about?” Kate asked him.“I’m talking about Kevin,” Chris explained. “Come on, Kate. I’m trying to rain on his parade, but of all the these you could have chosen to spend the rest of your life with, you chose him?”“Well, news flash, big brother. I’m not marrying Kevin,” Kate announced.“You’re not? So who are you marrying?” Chris asked in confusion.“Tony DaCosta. He’s a friend of the family,” Kate said vaguely.“I don&
The wedding day finally came and the ceremony was to begin at 6 p.m. Wendy showed up as soon as she closed from work. She was dressed in a beige silk dress similar to Kate’s.As Kate expected, her mother complained about her choice of wedding dress, even though it had a high neck and stopped at her ankles. Kate’s belly hadn’t started bulging yet, but her bosom had doubled in size. She was grateful for the increase because she was naturally deficient in that area. While Wendy was putting the finishing touches to Kate’s makeup, someone knocked on her bedroom door.“May I come in?” Chris asked from outside.“Oh, god,” Kate groaned. She’d been dreading this confrontation for days.“Do you want me to send him away?” Wendy asked her.“No, let him in,” said Kate wearily. “Let’s get this over and done with.”“Look, don’t let your brothe
After dinner, Chris and John helped Kate carry her bags into Tony’s rental Chevy truck. They’d already taken photos together with Laura’s mobile phone, thanks to Wendy the unofficial photographer. When it was time to head to the airport, Kate joined Tony in the back seat of the truck while Charles sat on the passenger side beside the driver. Her parents and Wendy followed them in their car, while Chris and his family returned to their home in Prime Valley.“This feels surreal, doesn’t it?” Tony said conversationally.“It does,” Kate agreed. She felt a mixture of excitement and apprehension about this next phase of her wild adventure.“I know this might sound a bit strange, but I admire your bravery,” said Tony.Kate chuckled softly and said, “I’m not sure bravery is the right word to describe what I’ve just done. I don’t quite have a word for it yet, but it surely i
To Kate’s surprise, instead of heading to the check-in counter, she found herself following the men through another exit toward the hangar.“Where are we going?” She asked Tony suspiciously.“To the hangar to board the jet,” Tony answered casually.“The jet? What jet?” Kate asked in confusion.“My jet,” Tony answered calmly.Kate was stunned. They reached the hangar and behold, a white Cessna Citation M2 jet with ‘DaCosta’ written on it was right there, waiting for them. The porter loaded their bags in the jet and left.A pretty blond lady who was the air hostess was waiting at the foot of the steps to welcome them. Charles went ahead of Tony and Kate.“Shall we?” Tony asked Kate softly. She simply nodded and let Tony escort her into the aircraft.“Good evening, Mr DaCosta. Welcome on board,” the air hostess greeted him with a wide
“Oh, shoot!” Kate muttered irritably. She had stubbed her toe against the metal leg of the serving table where she was passing out food to recipients of the ongoing outreach program organized by her church. Even her thick boot couldn’t protect her from the stinging pain of that unexpected collision.Kate had tried so hard to remain focused all day but her troubled mind kept getting in the way. Now, she had a throbbing toe to remind her to get her head back in the game and stop drifting off mentally.Kate scanned the crowd of volunteers going about their tasks to see if she would spot a familiar blond hair with a faded undercut among them, but she didn’t. Her heart sank with disappointment. Where on earth was Kevin?“Do you need some help here?” A rich male voice asked near Kate, bringing her back to the moment. She looked at the man who had spoken and found herself looking into a pair of warm brown eyes belonging to a good-looking male specimen from another generation. The man was dre
“What did you just say?” Kevin asked in a stage whisper. He looked like a deer caught in headlight with wide eyes and a gaping mouth. Kate hadn’t expected him to jump for joy after revealing her pregnancy to him, but she hadn’t expected this sort of dramatic reaction either.“You heard me, Kevin. I said I’m pregnant,” she announced firmly.“You can’t be!” Kevin snapped, having recovered from his initial shock.“We used protection every time,” he continued heatedly. “How on earth did you get pregnant?”“The condom broke the last time, remember?” Kate lashed out at him.Kevin ran his long fingers through his hair and started pacing back across his living room like a caged tiger. Kate watched him silently as he strode from one end of the room to the other. She’d always found Kevin very attractive with his boy-band looks and devil-may-care personality. As a teenager, Kate fantasized about dating a bad boy and Kevin was the fulfilment of that fantasy. Her family didn’t like him but they to
When Kate got home, she was relieved to see that her parents weren’t there yet. They were probably still at the relief camp or they’d gone to the church to meet with the board.Kate wondered if the church board would fire her father from being the senior pastor if they heard about her pregnancy. Her mother was the leader of the women’s fellowship, which in Kate’s opinion, was more or less a group of old women who loved to gossip and judge everyone in the community. Imagine her mother now becoming the new topic of discussion!“I should probably leave a farewell note behind and run away from here,” Kate told herself as she unlocked the front door with her keys and entered the cozy townhouse she shared with her parents. They used to live in Cheyenne but they moved to Sommerville five years ago after her father retired from his medical consultancy job at the age of 50, and went into full-time ministry. Her mother wasn’t initially happy about the lifestyle change, but she has since settled
