CHAPTER 9

“Christian’s not as weird as you think he is. I know his accusations are funny and they upset you. The truth is someone else tried to pull this stunt once and Christian found out. "He's very protective of the people he loves and that includes me." Olivia sat on her bed, remembering the explanation Josh gave about Christian’s confusing behavior.

She soon started brooding over the fact that she would have to survive living with Christian without Josh around. Olivia quickly turned off the thoughts in her head, so she could focus on making the day brighter and happier for Eunice and herself.

Olivia worked her way around the kitchen, preparing and serving the cookies she promised Eunice the day before. Eunice stood on a stool, eagerly watching Olivia as she flipped pancakes with the concentration of a professional chef. Josh entered, still in his pajamas, with his usual mischievous smile on his face.

“Good morning, ladies”, he greets, leaning against the door frame. “What delicio

CHAPTER 10Olivia’s scream echoed through the living room, followed by Josh’s rushed footsteps. He hurried in, carrying a golf club with him. Eunice also followed from her toy room, her small footsteps patterning against the marble floor. As Josh approached, Olivia's face was pale, her eyes glued to the television.“What’s going on?" Josh asked in confusion. His brows furrowed as he did not see anything or anyone that could have caused her to raise an alarm."Look," Olivia whispered as she pointed at the television screen. The television displayed, during a breaking news segment, the image of a large skyscraper. The top of it was engulfed in thick fumes. The building looked familiar. Josh took a closer look and he realized that it was Mason Enterprises, Christian’s company headquarters. The scene was chaotic, with firefighters and emergency personnel swarming the building. The reporter’s voice was tense as he announced the details of the incident.“We are currently at the front of Mas

CHAPTER 11By night time, Olivia had put Eunice to bed. She had just finished reading the last sentence of the bedtime story. She looked over at the girl and tucked her in properly before leaving the room.On her way out, she met Josh in the corridor. "Hey Olivia!" Josh started by greeting her first.“Hi Josh”, she replied, partly surprised to find him there. “Has Christian gone to bed?" she asked cautiously.Josh sighed before replying, “He has, but I’m not sure if he’s asleep." Knowing the kind of person he is, he will try to pull all possibilities out of this new problem. I just hope he takes it easy. At least for Eunice’s sake.Olivia nodded. “I hope he takes it easy too, but I kind of understand him though. He’s trying his best to make it a safe environment for Eunice to live in."Josh also nodded. “Just try your best to take care of Eunice. I really appreciate what you have been doing for us."Olivia smiled. “It is all part of why I am employed. Isn’t it? Aside from that, Eunice

CHAPTER 12About a week after the visit of the social worker, Christian seemed to be in a dilemma, and he needed help with it. He was seated in the dining room when Olivia came around and saw him.Olivia saw him deep in thought, so she went and sat in front of him.“Mr. Mason, I’ve been noticing that you have been stressed since the visit of the social worker last week. Did she say something that caused you to be like this? Will they take Eunice out of your care?" Olivia asked him firmly.Christian sighed. “They are not going to remove Eunice from my care. Don’t worry. But they said they had a recommendation for me to help Eunice grow up like every normal child.Olivia was surprised and curious. “Oh. What was the recommendation?“The board said I needed a marriage. They said that apart from me being a father figure, Eunice needed a mother figure, since a nanny is usually temporary”.Olivia sighed before asking, “Can I tell you what I think about this?" Christian looked at her and nodd

Chapter 13Christian sat at the head of the long, polished boardroom table, reading the report he’d received earlier. However, he could not focus on it. His mind kept replaying the conversation he had with Olivia the previous night. He was not giving up on convincing her, but how to go about it was also very confusing.“Mr. Mason”, one of the older board members, Mr. Stuart called, pulling his attention to the meeting.“The reports are fine so far. If we continue this way, we would be leading the country in no time”, Christian replied, thinking they wanted his feedback on their report.Mr Stuart cleared his throat. “We have something else to discuss with you, sir." As soon as he heard that, Christian looked up to see Mr. Stuart staring at him intently, and the other board members murmuring to one another.“What is the matter? Is it about the company?” Christian asked as he shifted in his seat.Mr. Stuart shook his head. "Well...It is not exactly about the company, but it is related to

CHAPTER 14Olivia was silent for a minute. “I thought we had talked about this. We agreed to look for another solution together for the time being," she said softly.Christian nodded, before replying, “I also agree with you, remember. But the board members of my company are also on my matter now. They are requesting that I get married.Olivia scrunched her face in confusion. “Your board members get to decide when you get married? I thought this was your personal life."“They were not supposed to, but they somehow do now. They said that my singleness would reflect on the company negatively and the shareholders would not be comfortable with me becoming the new chairman. They want me to get married for the media to see." Christian said while pacing around the room.Olivia saw his agitated expression and could not help but feel back for him. ‘He looks like he’s stuck’, she thought to herself.“So, you don’t have any other young women in mind? What about those young ladies from prestigious

CHAPTER 15On the television, reporters were swarming around Christian, their microphones extended toward him. “Mr. Mason, is it true you got engaged? Who is the lucky woman? Which family is she from? "How long have you been dating each other?" Multiple questions were being thrown at him, different voices ringing at once.Olivia stared at the television screen, her mouth agape and her hand on her waist, as she stood in the middle of the living room. Her heart was beating fast in her chest, hoping that Christian didn't spew any nonsense.Christian raised his hand, signaling them to keep quiet. He flashed them his rarely seen signature smile. “I will address all your questions shortly," he said coolly.“I was planning on calling for a press conference this week to announce it, but since it has come to this, I better confess”, he said, causing the crowd in front of him to burst out laughing.“I’ve been dating my girlfriend for a few months now, and I proposed last night. CHAPTER 16The next morning, Olivia was sitting on her bed, thinking about the unusual conversation she had had with Christian the previous night.“Would you like to go on a date with me?" Christian asked, his eyes hopeful for a positive answer.Olivia’s brows furrowed. “A date?”, she asked, feigning confusion.“I was thinking that we should go on dates a number of times before we get the contract. That way, we can get to know each other better. And your identity will be revealed after marriage. The media will ask you funny questions about me, so…” Christian explained.“Okay. Let’s go on a little date. But I recommend that we go no more than three times before marriage. I mean, it is just for show.Christian nodded and smiled at her. “Yes, three times."The two of them came to a conclusion and agreed to go on a date the next day.Olivia sighed. The reality of what she had agreed to had just started sinking in. She was about to marry a man she had absolutely no romantic feelings for, a

CHAPTER 17She read the news article and saw the photos under them. There were some more articles about them and the news seemed to have gotten the attention of many. Every headline seemed louder than the last, and each photograph felt more invasive. She didn’t want to read the comments under the news. But curiosity got the best of her.Her heart sank as she read the comments. They were harsh, nitpicking every little thing about her appearance.“That dress is hideous. Christian could have done so much better.”“She looks like she bought that outfit from a clearance rack. Not the kind of woman you’d expect next to Christian Mason.”“She’s pretty, but not Christian Mason pretty, if you know what I mean.”Suddenly she remembered something from a date in the afternoon. Christian was acting strangely with her, tucking her hair and locking their hands. So this was the reason. She got off her bed to go confront him in his office.“Take all the articles down and be quick about it”, she overhe

Epilogue Nine months later. The sun streamed gently through the tall windows of the new Matt & Rose Foundation building, casting a warm glow over rows of seated attendees—executives, students, members of the press, and friends. The air held something rare: hope. Christian stood at the podium in a tailored navy suit, a small white ribbon pinned to his lapel. His gaze swept across the audience, lingering on the front row, where Olivia sat beside Ruth. Ruth wore a floral midi dress and a guarded smile. Next to her sat Roosevelt Lee—a former college buddy of Christian’s, and for the past month, Ruth’s quiet comfort. Eunice sat on Olivia’s lap, her legs swinging under her dress shoes, proudly sporting a glittery badge that read Junior Ambassador. She waved when Christian looked her way. He winked, then returned his attention to the microphone. “Today,” Christian began, his voice carrying with ease, “we honour two people whose kindness shaped who I am. My brother and sister-in-law

Chapter 120 Another four months had passed since Josh’s first court appearance. Today was judgment day.The courtroom felt colder this time—not from the air, but from the finality clinging to the walls like frost. The trial had dragged on for weeks—meticulous testimonies, irrefutable digital evidence, and the haunting voices of those Josh had manipulated or destroyed. Ruth had testified. So had Olivia. And Christian had taken the stand with quiet resolve, walking the court through every calculated step Josh had taken in the shadows. Now, there were no whispers. Just silence. The sentencing.Christian sat in the front row once again, between Ruth and Olivia. His hands rested on his knees, spine straight, jaw tight. Behind them, rows of strangers watched history unfold.Olivia wore a black blouse and slacks, her eyes fixed forward, unreadable. Ruth had opted for navy this time—a subtle, steady colour that matched the calm she was trying to summon.Josh was brought in, flanked by office

Chapter 119 Four Months LaterThe car ride to the courthouse was silent and tense. Christian drove, while Ruth and Olivia sat quietly in the back. The Massachusetts Criminal Courthouse loomed ahead, grim beneath a brooding sky. The winter air cut through even the thickest coats. News vans lined the perimeter like vultures, antennas raised like mechanical spines. Cameramen and reporters crowded the steps, lenses trained on the entrance, waiting for the man at the center of a storm no one had seen coming.Inside, the courtroom buzzed with restrained energy. Whispered conversations rose and fell like waves. Every seat was filled—press, family members, curious onlookers. The case of State vs. Joshua Smith had gripped the city: betrayal, murder, power, secrets.Christian sat at the front beside Olivia and Ruth, his expression carved from stone, but his eyes— his eyes burned. He hadn’t slept well in days, not since the indictment was finalised. The time between discovery and justice had fe

Chapter 118 Detective Harris shone his flashlight into the dark cavity beneath the floorboards, brushing aside layers of dust and cobwebs. “There’s definitely something down here.”Christian knelt beside the hole, squinting into the shadows. “What do you see?”“Some kind of box.” Harris reached down carefully and pulled out a dusty metal tin, about the size of a shoebox. It clanked faintly as he set it beside him. “It was wedged under one of the boards.”Detective Fisher stepped forward, gloved hands steady, and popped the lid. Everyone leaned in.Inside, nestled between scraps of old cloth, were two flash drives, a sealed plastic sleeve containing a small memory card—and, folded neatly at the bottom—a shirt.Fisher’s brow furrowed as he lifted the drives. “Bag these,” he instructed, handing them to another officer. “Handle with care. They could be encrypted.”Christian’s gaze narrowed. “What kind of shirt is that?”Fisher gently unfolded the fabric. It was a large-sized, worn men’s

His expression was calm, but there was an intensity in his eyes that hadn’t been there before.“Eunice,” he said softly, “what do you mean by a secret room?”Eunice beamed, clearly delighted to finally share her secret.“The one behind the big bookshelf in the living room! Daddy and Uncle Josh used to go there all the time. I saw them!” She puffed out her chest proudly. “They thought I didn’t know, but I did.”Christian’s grip tightened slightly. Olivia noticed the tick in his jaw.“When did you see them, sweetheart?” she asked gently, kneeling beside them. “Was it a long time ago?”Eunice nodded, her little hands tugging at the hem of Olivia’s

Chapter 116 The Mason mansion was quiet that night—the kind of stillness that carries the weight of things unsaid.Ruth sat curled on the plush living room couch, a blanket draped around her shoulders. But the warmth did nothing to ease the chill in her chest. The day’s events played on a loop in her mind— every word, every lie, every trace of Josh’s deception. She had spent months loving a man who never truly existed. Now all that remained was the rubble of a future that had never been real.Olivia sat beside her, close enough to offer support, but not suffocating.“Are you sure you don’t want to go upstairs and try to sleep?” she asked gently.Ruth let out a scoff and shook her head. “Sleep? Not a chance. Every time I close my eyes, I hear his voice. I see that smug smile he gave me—like he still had me wrapped around his finger.” Her voice cracked, raw with disbelief. “God, he really believed I was still his.”Olivia reached over and took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “He’

Chapter 115 Ruth tightened her grip on the steering wheel as she pulled into the detention center's parking lot. The morning sun glared off the pavement, but its warmth couldn’t touch the cold knot twisting in her stomach. She exhaled slowly, bracing herself. This wasn’t a visit for closure. It wasn’t to ask for explanations. She needed to see the manipulative monster Josh truly was—again. For the past twenty-four hours, she had replayed every moment: every conversation, every touch, every whispered promise. All lies. Carefully crafted. Skilfully delivered. And she had believed them —believed him—because she thought he loved her the way she had loved him.She stepped out of the car, her heels clicking sharply against the asphalt as she walked toward the entrance. The moment she passed through security, the weight of the situation settled squarely on her shoulders. Cold fluorescent lights hummed overhead as officers led her down sterile hallways. And then, at last, she was there—facin

Chapter 114 The rhythmic clicking of Christian’s pen against his desk was the only sound in the vast office as he sat, deep in thought. The morning had started like any other, with reports to review and meetings to prepare for, but the weight of last night’s revelation pressed down on him like a storm cloud.Josh.He had spent quite some time going over every detail from the journal Ruth had found. The words scrawled across the pages painted a picture of a man who had been living a double life—outwardly charming, supportive, and loyal, yet seething with resentment beneath the surface.A knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts. “Come in,” he called. The door opened, and Secretary Pitcher stepped inside, his expression neutral but professional. “Detective Fisher is here to see you, sir.”Christian straightened, nodding. “Send him in.”A moment later, Detective Fisher strode into the office. He was a middle-aged man with graying temples, sharp eyes that missed nothing, and an air
