ISABELLA'S POV

The next morning, I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, my mind spinning with guilt. Maxwell had gotten me a gift. Not just any gift, but something that showed he actually cared—something thoughtful. A fashion book and a sketchbook, just for me. He’d listened, paid attention to what mattered to me. I could still feel the surprise, the excitement that had filled me when I opened the box.

And I was going to betray him.

I groaned, rubbing my eyes. “What the hell am I doing?”

I turned over in bed, hugging the pillow to my chest, my thoughts getting darker by the second. How had it come to this? How had I let myself get involved in something so terrible? Hannah and Henry had made it sound so simple—just steal the documents, and everything would be fine. But it wasn’t fine. It wasn’t simple. Not anymore.

If it were before, even though I'd be scared, I'd have done it without batting an eyelid.

Maxwell wasn’t who I thought he was. Or maybe he was, but I hadn’t bothered to look
