Chapter 68

MAXWELL'S POV

For a moment, I couldn’t think straight. My pulse was pounding in my ears, and my eyes followed Hannah and Holly as they stormed away, disappearing around the corner. My stomach dropped like a rock. She thought I was out with Clarissa. She thought I was with this snake in human form.

“Damn it.” I muttered under my breath. I needed to clear this up, and fast.

Clarissa was still clinging to me, her smile fading when she realized I was no longer playing along. With a frustrated grunt, I pushed her away, much rougher than necessary.

“Get lost.” I snapped, my voice cold. “I’m done here.”

Her expression turned into a pout, but she didn’t argue. With a huff, she turned on her heel and strutted away, her heels clacking on the pavement. The instant she was out of sight, I yanked out my phone, my fingers trembling slightly. I dialed Keiran’s number.
