JACK

I paced the living room, glancing at the clock for the fifth time in the last ten minutes.

Where was she?

Vivian said she was going out for a stroll, but that was over an hour ago, and she still wasn’t back.

I’d called her, more than once, but as usual, no answer.

She had this annoying habit of not picking up her phone, and it was starting to drive me crazy.

“Damn it, Viv,” I muttered under my breath, running a hand through my hair.

She didn’t understand….she couldn’t..

how much it worried me when she disappeared like this.

Not after everything we’d been through.

The temptation to go out and look for her was gnawing at me, but I didn’t even know where to start.

Where would she go?

A chill ran down my spine as my mind raced with a hundred different worst-case scenarios.

Just as I was about to grab my jacket and head out the door, it swung open, and there she was….Vivian, walking in like everything was perfectly normal.

Relief flooded through me, but it was quickly replaced

JACK "Alright, I’ll be back soon, Viv," I said, giving her a soft smile. “Just promise me you’ll take care of yourself and, more importantly, don’t miss me too much while I’m gone.”Vivian chuckled, rolling her eyes playfully. “You know that’s impossible, Jack.”I leaned in, kissing her forehead one last time before heading toward the door. “I’ll hold you to that,” I replied with a grin. “Stay put and don’t stress, okay?”She nodded, a smile lingering on her lips as she waved me off.I took a deep breath, heading toward the car. JACKJust as I felt my consciousness slipping away, the world around me fading into darkness, I prepared to give in.Suddenly, there was a loud crack, and the passenger side window shattered into a thousand glittering shards, scattering in the air. I blinked, momentarily dazed, and then I saw her…Vivian..standing there.“Jack! Mom! Dad!” she shouted. In a split second, she shoved her hand through the broken glass, pulling the door open with a strength I hadn’t known she possessed. The fresh air rushed in like a gust of wind, revitalizing me, and I felt the weight pressing down on my chest begin to lift.“Come on! Get out!” Vivian urged, her eyes wide opened. My father wasted no time, scrambling through the opening as I followed, each of us gasping for the precious air that had felt so far away just moments ago. JACK“Jack, I still don’t understand what you’re saying,” Vivian said, her voice shaking slightly.I stood up, my heart racing as I met her gaze. “What do you mean you don’t understand? You set us up. I thought we were in this together.”Her eyes widened in disbelief, and I could see the panic flickering beneath her face. “No, I didn’t! I would never do that! I love you, Jack. I would never put you in danger!”The words felt like daggers, twisting deeper into my gut.How could she deny it? How could she act like she hadn’t been the one to lead us into that hell?I couldn’t shake the memory of the moment I entered the car. The first thing I had inhaled was her familiar fragrance…the sweet, floral scent. I fought against the tightening knot in my stomach, forcing my thoughts back to that moment before the nightmare began. The car doors had refused to unlock; I could still feel the panic rising as we struggled against them. I had noticed something else….a glimpse of her hair ribbon

VIVIAN "Do you remember this?" I asked softly, watching Jack's face intently. His eyes widened, the tension between us shifting as he stared at the bracelet. "Wait... what?" He stood abruptly, pacing for a moment, running a hand through his hair in frustration."Vivian, I don't understand. What are you talking about?"I took a deep breath, telling myself to stay calm. "This bracelet... it’s mine. And yours. You gave it to me when we were kids. Don’t you remember?"Jack froze, his face draining of color. Slowly, he sat back down, burying his head in his hands. For a long time, he didn’t speak. When he did, it was a whisper. "Your name is Vivian…" he muttered, more to himself than to me. He glanced up, his expression filled with disbelief and confusion. "Vivian... You went to Meadowbrook Elementary. Didn't you?"I nodded slowly, my heart racing with the fact that he had begun to remember. "Yes, that's right. I thought you’d remember."Jack leaned back, his face pale. "But… I thought

FIVE YEARS AGOVIVIAN I walked alongside Clara, my feet dragging a little as we made our way to the cafeteria. It was just another day at the orphanage. The smell of food, the clatter of trays, and the distant chatter from the other kids should have been comforting, but it wasn’t.“Vivian, snap out of it.” Clara nudged me playfully, her energy always the opposite of mine in moments like these. “What’s got you looking all broody?”I sighed, shoving my hands in my pockets. “Just…thinking.”“Oh no, that’s dangerous. What are you thinking about this time? Something to do with him?” Clara shot me a knowing look, raising an eyebrow.I rolled my eyes, though a small smile tugged at my lips. Clara always knew how to pull me out of my head. “Not this time. Just…life, I guess.”Clara grabbed a tray, sliding it onto the metal rails as we approached the food line. “Life, huh? That sounds serious.”“Well, I’ve been here for years now. Watching people come and go, getting adopted. And I’m still…he

VIVIAN Mr Daniels’ expression grew more intense as he leaned closer, his eyes locking with mine.He cleared his throat before continuing, his voice low. "Your parents were working on a case, Vivian. A case that involved the Andersons. They were close to exposing some... very dangerous truths about them."I blinked, my mind racing. "A case? What kind of case?"He sighed deeply, glancing down at his clasped hands before looking back up at me. "They had evidence..solid, undeniable evidence…of illegal activities tied to the Andersons’ business. Money laundering, fraud, worse. Your parents were set to bring that evidence to court. They were going to take them down."I shook my head slowly, my heart pounding in my chest. "But why kill them? Couldn't they have... I don't know, settled it some other way?"Mr Daniels’ face darkened. "When people like the Andersons are threatened, they don’t play fair, Vivian. They have resources, connections. “They’re dangerous. Your parents weren’t just a

The room seemed to close in on me as she spoke, her voice steady, too calm for what she was revealing."He helped me get closer to your family," she said, her eyes hardening with every word. "Mr. Daniels. He wasn’t just some lawyer. He planned it all. He worked his way into the Anderson family, gaining your parents' trust."My throat felt tight as I tried to comprehend her words. “He was our family’s lawyer for years…”Vivian gave a bitter laugh, shaking her head. “Exactly. That’s how he did it. He wormed his way in. And when Mrs. Anderson was looking for someone to take Lily’s place, guess who convinced her that I was the perfect choice?”The room spun. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The man I’d known for a long time now, the man who’d been at every family event, sitting at our table during holidays… he’d been playing us all along.V

It felt like just yesterday that I held her in my arms for the first time, and now she was here, radiant and full of joy, ready to be part of my special day. She paused for a moment, taking in the sight of the people who had come to support her. “This gallery has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, and seeing it come to life tonight is nothing short of surreal.”The audience clapped politely, and Clara took a breath, glancing at the art behind her before continuing. “I’ve always believed that art is a reflection of our journey….the ups, the downs, the moments that define who we are. And tonight, I’m honored to share that journey with all of you.”As the applause quieted down, Clara’s expression softened, and h

VIVIANWe barely had time to close the door before Jack's hands were all over me. His lips crashed against mine, hungry, desperate, as he backed me up against the wall, his body pressing firmly into mine. My heart raced, matching the rhythm of his rapid, heated kisses. He pulled my coat off, tossing it aside with a low growl as his fingers traced over my skin, igniting every inch of me.“I’ve been waiting for this all night,” he murmured against my lips, his hands slipping down to the tip of my dress, ready to pull it up.But just as the heat was building between us, Jack’s phone buzzed. He ignored it, not breaking the kiss, his hand already sliding up my thigh. The buzzing continued, persistent, as he groaned in frustration, finally glancing at the screen.“It’s the family lawyer,” he muttered.I stilled, pulling back just enough to catch my breath. “You should probably answer that.”Jack sighed, clearly annoyed, but nodded. He pulled out his phone, pressing the speaker button.

This was, what, our tenth time meeting? And yet, the butterflies in my stomach still showed up every single time.I leaned back, rubbing my palms together. Tonight was the night.
