Stepping into the luxurious party that had the perfect mood and vibe, filled with elites and socialites that had been invited as guests too, Skylar walked behind her boss, dressed in a perfect, gorgeous silver dress that was picked by the sales assistants, while Ivan waited outside the clothes mall impatiently.
It took them time to find her perfect size because of her round figure, which was quite an uncommon size in a lady as petite as her, and it required a brief fitting too. And after they finally found the right fit for her, she gasped out in shock mixed with happiness to see how good it looked on her. He paid for the dress and a matching heel even before she came out in the luxurious combination, and they arrived at the event grounds a few minutes later. Skylar's eyes took another glance at her boss as she walked slowly behind him after they alighted the car, and she could not help but roll her eyes, ‘And just once again, he had to look very perfect for the event! He didn't even need to do much.’ As they proceeded into the party through the main gate, Ivan's eyes scanned around the launching party, and he immediately decided that he was not going to waste his time around there, and would just make his presence known before he left. “Wait for me here, and just stand around. By 9:30 PM exactly. I will be by the gate, and then we leave,” he informed Skylar, and strode away from her sight before she could even acknowledge his instructions. ‘Ah! That arrogant man! Just how long would she have to put up with his arrogance?! Why did he now make a fuss about her dress anyway?’ Even if she was feeling a little nervous in her dress that seemed to not be serving its worth anymore because she was away from Ivan, the center of attraction, Skylar found a stand miles away from him, since he just wanted her to be on standby. She observed with cautiousness every lady that stood elegantly in twos and threes, and they all seemed to be talking about Ivan Hamilton, who had just arrived at the party. How could they not? He was too irresistible of a man to not be noticed, and he unintentionally called attraction to himself like moths to a flame. “Ivan, I am so glad you came,” Antonio Garvin, the host of the party, approached Ivan as soon as he saw him, and they both exchanged pleasantries. “It is my pleasure,” Ivan's face remained as calm as ever, as Antonio quickly introduced him to some others, sparking a topic of interest, as the boss of the business world was standing in their midst. Ivan had a few conversations with some of his acquaintances at the party also, his eyes watching time cautiously to be sure of the perfect time to leave. From businessmen, to entrepreneurs, to hot, young CEOs who all wanted to converse with him, it was quite difficult to navigate through the party while making sure to eat or drink nothing. Unbeknownst to him, his dear, very mannered and disciplined secretary was drinking glasses of champagne and taking shots of drinks while awaiting his arrival, and taking the chance of the event to lay off the day's stress from her body. “You seem to be without that tenacious secretary of yours today,” Ivan paused on his track, hearing the obnoxious voice behind him, just when he had barely freed himself from unwanted company, “It is quite a surprise, though. She is always stuck to you like glue,” Marcus continued, tauntingly. “That fierce cat. She is always overprotective. I wonder how she copes with his ridiculousness anyway,” Hermes gloated, and it took Ivan willpower not to send a punch into his face. He turned instantly, his eyes glancing derisively at the ones who were talking, and he could not believe that they were still the same even after years had passed. They were both childhood classmates, whom he had gone to their elite high school with, and also the same college. Their families were conglomerates too, and their fathers were business associates with his father. However, he was not like them. He hated their company, never honored their invitation to their club, never hung out with them, and was effortlessly the most successful, having taken over his family conglomerate. Of course, they hated his guts too. To them, he was too proud, obnoxious and acted like he was better. He was still the same when they were in high school, and the same even as adults. “Do you have anything to say to me?” Ivan's cold and dark gaze was enough to tell them that he was still not interested in whatever they had to say to him. “Still as proud as ever, hunh?” Hermes's lips twisted into a tight smirk, his eyes raised in irritation because Ivan still seemed to look down on them. It hurt his feelings even if he tried too hard to hide it. “I will be leaving if you have nothing to say,” he turned away from both of them even before they could say anymore, and made up his mind to leave the party instantly before he got mad and acted silly. He was done. Ivan stood in a spot, his peering eyes looking past every lady standing in the crowd, searching for his secretary, whose silhouette he would recognize in the dark. And just as his eyes found her from the distance at which he stood, he shook his head when he saw her holding two glasses of champagne in her hand at the same time. And just as he was about to take the next step to go and scold her, a dextrous waitress collided with him, causing him to flinch and bend his body backwards instinctively, as soon as the tray of champagne delved into his stomach. However, the damage had been done. The crystal glasses had shattered with the liquid it held, soiling deep his impeccable suit, as the tray clattered to the floor, drawing the attention of the people around him instantly. The party seemed to pause for a split second as the eyes of those around him turned towards the source of the commotion, as Ivan stood there, sodden into a complete mess. It had them in a collective gasp to see what had ensued at the moment, the ladies more taken aback that their dear Ivan had been soiled by a clumsy fool. However, knowing his personality, they did not move a foot from where they were, waiting to see what his reaction would be. The waitress, a young woman with wide, aghast eyes, immediately began to stammer with panic, almost crying, “Oh my God, I am so sorry, please forgive me. I didn't see you coming. Let me help you,” she fumbled for a napkin, her hands quivering uncontrollably, as she tried to dab at the champagne soaking his suit and face. Ivan held up a hand to stop her, his expression calm and composed despite the mess she had gotten him into, “It is alright,” he said, his facial expression unbelievably calm and collected, “Don’t worry about it.” The waitress's eyes were still lingering with fear, her entirety trembling and her heart beating fast, her attempts to clean him up only making things worse, “I am so sorry, sir,” she continued to fumble with the napkin. Ivan gently took the napkin from her hand, seeing that she was making more mess on his clothes, “I will take care of it myself,” his sharp voice stated. “I am so sorry,” the waitress whispered again, retreating slightly from him as her boss came to apologize on her behalf instantly, while her fellow waitresses came to pick up the broken glasses away from the floor so that they would not wound anyone. Ivan turned away from everyone's sight in a very cool manner and stalked elegantly toward the restroom to get himself cleaned up. He removed his jacket in an instant, and ran water over the napkin he still had with him to dab his face clean and just wash his hand, knowing that there was no need to try and clean it. Barely a few minutes after coming out of the restroom, he noticed that he suddenly became lightheaded as he made his way out, and something within him was beginning to swirl within him, causing a slight unsteadiness in his step. He shook his head, trying to clear his mind, knowing that he had taken no drink, but the feeling only grew stronger, as his vision blurred slightly, followed by a strange warmth that had begun to spread through his body. Ivan pressed a hand to his forehead in bewilderment, as he wondered what was happening to him. Panic surged through him instantly, and he knew something had gone wrong, as he tried his best to move fast, knowing he had to find Skylar immediately. With each step he took, his legs grew heavier and his body grew hotter, a deep innate desire surging through his body, causing him to suddenly grow hard within his legs. Skylar, who had been waiting for him for several minutes at the exact time she said they should meet at the entrance, sighted him coming unsteadily, as she scurried fast to meet him, only to notice that something was wrong with him. “Mr. Hamilton, are you alright?” she asked, stepping forward to support him as he stumbled slightly, causing her bruised foot to hurt even more. He grabbed her arm, his grip surprisingly weak, “I... I need to get out of here now!” he managed to say to her, his voice thick and slurred, “Something is wrong...”“Do not take me to the hospital. Just take me home,” Ivan groaned as his heart pounded like an erratic drum in his chest, each beat echoing in his ears as sweat beaded on his forehead. ‘Where did it go wrong? He didn't eat or drink anything, so how?’ he continued to ponder in his heart, as the car sped through the city streets and went straight to his house. All through the ride, Skylar continued to watch him in anxiety that something might go wrong on their way home, the more she mopped the sweat that beaded around his face with a towel. She wondered what had happened to him at the party while she was not there, but he wasn't in a good mood to even answer whatever questions she might have for him. Ivan's breaths came in ragged gasps under his breath, each inhale, tasting of the musky, intoxicating air around him, as he squeezed his eyes shut, trying to compose himself. But all he could see were flashes of burning desire that seared themselves into his mind, as a flush of heat rose
“Arhhhhhhhhh!” It was the nth time Skylar had screamed her lungs out, the more she wallowed in self-memory, her body cringing at the memory of what happened with Ivan Hamilton. She didn't know whether to cry or laugh the moment she had woken up from his house in the early hours of the morning, and how she packed her load and ran out of the mansion in a frenzy, leaving him still sleeping in bed. She knew she had lost all sense of reasoning. And all day since she got home, the only thing she could do was cuss herself out and blame herself while still in pain for the damage he had done in between her legs. ‘How could she? How could she be so unprofessional and lose herself?! How could she lose herself to Ivan Hamilton of all men?! A man who could have any lady at his disposal and would not give a damn about her.’‘What if he thought she was like other girls that threw themselves at him like some cheap whore?!’ And she knew he loathed ladies without self-control. What would she do if
Waking up to an empty bed with the memories of the previous night rushing into his head as soon as he awakened, Ivan could not help but scold himself for making such a stupid mistake and for losing himself. He paced around his room restlessly as soon as he got up from his bed and put on his clothes, running a hand through his messy hair in frustration. He could not believe he had allowed himself to be so careless at the very wrong time, when he had always been so cautious of everything he did. He prided himself on great discipline and self-control, yet, he was caught in a situation that felt entirely out of his control. Ivan scratched his hair even more aggressively, his thoughts badgering his head, ‘How had he let this happen?! Skylar was his secretary, for goodness’ sake! There was nothing that should be between them more than the contractual relationship between a boss and an employee. But that was ruined already!’ “Damn it!” He cussed out loud, his voice laced with self-rep
Skylar had been sitting behind her desk and seated in her chair, her fingers drumming rhythmically on the polished wood surface, with all manner of thoughts and angst going through her mind and almost driving her crazy. It was the first time in a long while that she was sitting at her desk in the early hours of a Monday morning, and also that Ivan had gone somewhere which he termed ‘private business’ without her. She didn't know what to do at all. In her life, for the first time in a long time, she was so confused about the right step to take, even if it took only a few seconds to hand in her resignation letter to him and save herself all the awkwardness. However, that was not the main cause of her anger, which seemed to be rising by the minute. It was because Ivan mentioned those words to her like they meant nothing, and said that they should be adults about what happened between them Her fists clenched into a ball, as the repetition of his words continued stoking the flames
Seated comfortably on a leather armchair was Ivan, focused on the tablet he had buried his eyes in doing some work, while he carefully anticipated the arrival of his investigator, who had been in the room a few minutes ago. The door soon pushed open, and a man, who seemed to be in his late thirties, putting on a back bumper jacket and pants walked in with a laptop safely secured under his arm. He placed the laptop on the huge table in front of Ivan, and instantly plugged in a USB drive he had slipped out of his pocket. “Mr. Hamilton,” he began, his first finger rotating around the mouse as he made a few clicks on the laptop, “Here is the party footage you requested,” he added, as soon as a video began to play on the screen. The footage began to play, showing scenes from the launch party which was held a few nights ago, showing, from a very capturing angle, how the party started from the beginning, showing elegantly dressed guests, waiters balancing trays of champagne, and people ho
“You what?!” Amelia exclaimed incredulously after listening to what her friend just revealed, her eyes widening in stupefied shock. She couldn't believe her ears. She had just arrived a few hours ago from her last flight, and she had barely cooked herself a meal and taken a nap when Skylar walked into the house so late at night, looking heavily fatigued and disheveled. And in a few minutes after convincing her repeatedly to tell her what was wrong, Skylar had recounted everything that happened in her absence, to free herself from the suffocation that everything that had just happened in a few days was putting her through. “With Ivan Hamilton?! Are you kidding?!” Amelia, who still had not yet gotten over the revelation her friend had disclosed to her, clamped her hand over her mouth, her face contorted into a battle mix of disbelief and shock. “Do not stress yourself. It has happened and cannot be changed. That is even the least of what is bothering me now,” there was weariness
Ivan slumped back on the plush leather seat of his sleek black car, with his tie loosened off of his neck, and his normally composed demeanor was out of place. He ran a hand through his thick, dark hair as he continued to feel infuriated by nothing in particular, his anger simmering beneath the surface which he had been feeling all day.The day had been so tiresome and exhausting for him, filled with endless meetings and inspections, which was a feeling he hadn't had in a long time, even on days when he worked endlessly till midnight. He had gone to inspect his companies as usual without a heads-up, and little detail seemed to irritate him, from the poorly cleaned machine in an industry, to the unnecessary chatter of the worker in one office, to the overly enthusiastic greeting of an employee in another. He had also looked behind several times to call Skylar and ask what was next, only to realize that those who followed behind him were not her. They were not his intelligent, petite
“Hi, Mr Ivan,” Skylar's voice was a little hesitant as she spoke from the other side of the phone which had rung several times before she picked up before even hearing him speak. Her voice was calm and collected, which was a contrast to how Ivan was feeling at that moment. “Did you get my letter? I am sorry it was so sudden, and that I didn't get the chance to tell you about it or present it to you in person,” Skylar's voice was a little rushed as she spoke, and Ivan's heart was beginning to shred on the spot as soon as he heard what she first spoke about. “I could not help it because of what suddenly came up, and the fastest way to convey the information to you was to drop a letter, because I had called your phones, sent a text, and even emails, but you have not responded. Thank you for being considerate, Mr. Ivan,” Skylar continued with gratitude, her voice warm and appreciative. ‘She was going to such an extreme extent just to tell him that she was leaving?’ Ivan could not he
“The surgery had just ended and was successful,” the surgeon, who had just come out of the theatre room still dressed in her blue scrub, and had a nose mask hanging below her chin, told Skylar with a reassuring smile that didn't brighten her face.Instantly, the world around her paused for a millisecond as the tension that had been hanging in her body crumbled instantly, and dissipated into the air. Her legs gave way below her body, and before she knew it, she had fallen on her knees, as she felt the hard, cold floor press against her palms that rested against the floor, the weight of the news sinking into her mind. Her right hand which was trembling covered her mouth, as a stifling gasp that felt like it had been locked in her chest for hours escaped her, alongside the tears that trickled down her cheeks. ‘She was alive. Her mother was alive,’ she heaved a sigh of relief, unable to handle the excitement. “Thank you, doctor. Thank you so much,” were the few words her voice could u
“I am sorry, we cannot be together,” those heavy words hung heavily between the two standing across from one another, and the receiver, Leo, blinked hard as he stared at Kali, who had broken the news to him.“What.. What is wrong, Kali?” His lips barely found the right words to utter because his brain was barely functioning coherently. That was the last news he expected her to bring to him, just when he was planning that they would go hiking together since she liked doing that. ‘Things had been going fine between them for the past few days. What went wrong?’ His eyes took a haunted look as if awaiting an explanation from her. “Nothing is,” she looked away from him while resting her back on the railings of the rooftop recreation spot they were standing, because she said she wanted to go there when he asked what she wanted to do. “Kali, meet my eyes,” Leo stared at her, his heart wanting to reach out to her in the most intentional way, as his right hand stretched and caught hers in
Skylar made her way into the five-star restaurant, her eyes glancing briefly through the few people that were seated in the room, until they landed on Grayson, who was seated by the window, his face brightening with a warm, sweet smile the moment he raised his head. She instantly flashed a warm smile at him from where she was standing, and he rose to his feet, as a gesture to welcome her which almost melted away her initial nervousness instantly. It made Skylar's eyes almost roll in shock because she never thought she could see him smile considering their first and second encounter. “Hi, Sky,” he greeted her with a sweet smile, and politely offered her a seat across from him, “You look absolutely gorgeous,” his eyes lingered as he took in her dress, and her smile.“Hi, Gray,” she responded with a nervous smile, “You don't look bad yourself,” she finally settled into her seat. “How have you been these days?” He initiated the conversation, his eyes peering at her. “Been great,” Skyl
The evening breeze brushed gently over the terrace of Ivan's home, and the beautiful scents of marigolds and lavender from the garden which was situated not far from where the two friends sat, permeated the cool evening breeze with a nice fragrance that was soothing. Sitting across from Ivan, was Leo, who was dressed in a finely pressed summer shirt and slacks, as he slouched comfortably against the chair he was sitting on, with a light grin sitting on his lips. Gently, he swirled the glass of whiskey that was nestled between his fingers, as he stared at Ivan, who had been gazing hard at him for the past few seconds, as if thinking of what to say first. And then, he finally spoke. “So, you are telling me it has taken you two days since you landed to get a drink with me all because of a lady?” Ivan cocked a brow at him. “You know I have not seen or spoken to her since that …….” “Says the man who shows up on my doorstep after disappearing for half a year, and felt like he had to
It was late at night already, but the skies were still as bright as evening, which gave a physical misrepresentation of what time truly was, and had tricked Amelia into believing that the night was still young. She had quickly dressed up for work and sat in front of the dresser for a quick makeup touch, as she used the curling iron to press her hair while trying to gloss a shining red lipstick across her lips at the same time. However, while in haste to leave for her shift that night, her eyes caught sight of Skylar's restlessness through the mirror, whose body was sprawled lazily on the bed, with one hand tucked under her head, the other holding her phone close as she stared at the screen with an unreadable expression. “You never told me what happened last night,” Amelia began, trying to sound casual as she fluffed her hair over one shoulder, “You came home so gloomy and sad,” she glanced at the mirror again, while observing her closely.Meanwhile, Skylar was so engrossed in wha
Ivan stepped into his office after the meeting had ended, and was so surprised to see Skylar sitting at her desk, as calm and composed as ever. It was as if she had not refused to pick up his call all day, or failed to inform him as usual that she would not be around in the morning. She had him so worried. Regardless, a sense of relief washed over him in the most exhilarating manner, before he walked across to the front of her table, a little worried that she seemed bothered by his palpable presence, “Where were you, Sky? Your phone has been off since yesterday,” he gazed at her so intently when he questioned, as if beckoning her to look up at him. Without meeting his eyes, Skylar continued to type fast on her computer as if she had a deadline to meet, and murmured a sincere apology, “I am so sorry for missing the meeting, Mr. Hamilton. It won’t happen again,” she spoke calmly and eloquently. Ivan was taken aback by her very professional tone, as if to shut him out and install
With a weary and bothered heart, Ivan made his way to the office the next day, bothered that Skylar's phone had been off since the previous night. He was a little later to work than usual because a minor collision occurred with his car that morning on his way to work from a rough driver, and it distorted his plans to come early by a few minutes because he had the car towed and another brought to him.Quickly, he stalked out of his elevator as soon as it chimed open on the last floor with large strides in the most elegant way, and instantly made his way to the front of his office, as he opened the door to the office instantly, hoping to see her. However, disappointment clouded his face as soon his eyes fell on the empty desk where Skylar was supposed to be sitting behind. The chair was pushed in, and her papers were still untouched from the previous day. ‘Where was she?’ He wondered, his eyes raising in concern as he hesitated for a few seconds before entering inside, and made his w
The morning sun which Skylar had always loved suddenly felt unkind as it cast its harsh light on her weary face as she trudged into the main doors of the huge company, because it seemed as if it amplified the ache in her heart and the anger she felt from deep within. She made her way into the CEO's VIP elevator with its access card because she gracefully wanted to avoid bumping into any of the company workers, not minding the talks they might make again as to reasons why she got to ride the elevator when Ivan was not even with her. She could barely look at herself in the elevator mirror that she was surrounded by when she got in, and each glance she took at her reflection revealed her tired, hollow eyes and puffy cheeks, which she had spent half an hour trying to conceal. Despite the makeup, traces of last night’s turmoil clung to her like an embarrassment that she couldn’t wash away. It was obvious that she had cried so much. Skylar just wished that she was so open and cared less
Skylar stepped into her apartment with deep weariness engraved deep into her bones, as the weight of what she had just witnessed sat heavily on her chest, crushed her with each breath she took, and blurred her eyes with suffocating tears. The image of Ivan and Gwen kissing replayed in her head like a broken record over and over again, and it was as if a knife had been thrust into her gut. It was almost too hard to bear in mere sight, and the thoughts it brought to her mind severed her heart mercilessly. It suddenly felt as if all the moments that existed between her and Ivan meant nothing. Like she didn't even exist, enough for him to respect what happened between them. Like she didn't matter. Nothing hurt her more than the fact that the sight confirmed her fears and made her feel smaller than ever. It was even more terrifying because she didn't have the right to get angry at him. After all, they were just flings anyway. They didn't even have a name for what they were doing, so she
