Oh, no, no, and more no.
There was no way that Graham, who was from Santorini, could be at Blue Willow. He just couldn't.
Ava didn't bother to give any explanations for why she was leaving the chocolate shop; instead, she immediately ran away with Elijah as if the hounds of hell were chasing after them. She kept waiting for Graham to come after her and demand an answer of some type, but he never did. She was surprised.
And this made her feel a lot better.
Why did he even bother to be at Blue Willow in the first place? Graham was a student at an art school; nevertheless, why did he appear even better than he did while he was on Santorini? She let out a sigh. She had never before seen a more handsome man than he was.
Even for a one-night stand, the fact that a man like him had shown interest in Ava was a complete surprise to her. He appeared to have been plucked straight from the pages of GQ, while she... well, let's just say she looked her age. She thought that 38 was a challenging number, despite the fact that it was not in and of itself a negative number.
She was extremely self-conscious of the fine lines that had begun to appear around her eyes and mouth, constantly aware of the stray grey roots that appeared in the shape of a starburst at her brow each time her color grew out, and always critical of the cellulite that she observed when she looked at herself in the mirror. Her breasts had never been what might be termed as "perky," despite the fact that they were large and well-formed. They still had a love-hate relationship with gravity despite the passage of time, and breastfeeding hadn't helped much either. Nor had the labor and delivery of her kid done anything for her stomach.
In spite of everything, Ava was aware that she was attractive; she saw that when she dressed up, people took attention, and guys continued to gaze at her. Yet, Ava did not consider herself to be the type of Cosmo model that she could picture herself playing in the surf with a guy like Graham.
She entertained the thought of being naked in his presence for a moment. As if in hell something like that would occur.
A few years hadn't done him any harm, but what about her? The answer is no. At the age of thirty-eight, she already had a difficult time being naked in front of him. After having a child at the age of forty-four? If things had ever shown signs of turning around while she was younger, there was no way they were going to do so when she reached middle age.
She let out a sigh.
As if.
But Santorini was without a doubt one of her most treasured recollections. Because of the way he had touched her, she got the distinct impression that they were the only people in the entire world. He'd been so patient, and she'd come to feel absolutely stunning as a result.
Ava's reaction to the news that she was expecting a child was one of pure joy, but she didn't bother to seek for the father. Had not desired anything more from him than what he had already given her, which was the kid she had always desired."My love, it's time for you to get your head out of the clouds." She berated herself in front of others. Ava needed to coax Elijah into the shower so that they could wash all of that chocolate out of his hair, unless he had already changed and removed most of it with his tongue.
If chocolate was harmful for canines, did it mean that it was also dangerous for young werewolves? Nonetheless, she managed to find some solace in the fact that she had the thought. She had no prior experience with any of this. And how exactly does she want to convey her worries to the pediatrician? Or would it be preferable to visit a veterinarian? In point of fact, she most likely need the services of a witch. Her phone rang, which put an end to her internal monologue of self-criticism. It would be Gin. The fairy would come up to her even if she didn't answer if she didn't. This would not be a terrible thing at all, considering that Gin was more effective than I was in luring Elijah into the bathtub.
What the hell was she going to do if she was forced to leave Blue Willow and the life that she had just recently begun to shape for them?
She addressed him with a "Hey" as a greeting.
Gin stated her accusation by saying, "You didn't inform me that Elijah's father was a Redwood."
The answer is "No," She was unable to move. “Is he?”
"It was Grayson Redwood, who was shopping at my store, so definitely, honey. I would say that he is.
"Grayson Redwood, you freaking idiot. To clarify, you mean... Billionaire Grayson Redwood?" She heaved a big sigh before continuing. “Wolfen Redwood?”
"You've got it, that one."
Gin's tone was unnaturally upbeat, and it wasn't only because she was a sugarplum, either.
"I do not believe you really get the significance of this to me." Her throat was being savaged by panic.
Gin remarked in a loving tone, "That indicates that the demonling is the successor to the Redwood estate." This eliminates the need for you to bother your sister-in-law with a request for financial assistance. That indicates that you are about to get bitten. " Gin giggled. "In the most optimal manner."
Ava was beginning to feel terrified, but she managed to get a firm grip on herself and push herself to remain calm. "Let's all keep in mind that I'm Queen Fuck No of Central Nopestania," she said. What do you think about that?
"Girl, if I could spend just one night with a Redwood, I would gladly pay all the gold in my little Uncle Fergus's pot at the end of the rainbow." Gin drew a stop. "Well, maybe not Taylor because I'd feel like a nasty old witch with a gingerbread house trying to get strapping men to lick my marshmallows," the Gin said. "Taylor is a kind guy, but I just don't see us being able to pull it off." The silence was repeated by her. "But after giving it some more consideration, I think I could live with it."
This was almost too much information for Ava to take in at once. When she initially learned of Elijah's condition, she was under the impression that it was a trait inherited from her mother's side of the family. She had never given any thought to the possibility that the man she'd met in Greece was a werewolf.
She grabbed Elijah as soon as she saw him looking like the cutest teddy bear Pomeranian puppy, and then she raced away into the darkness of the night. For despite the fact that she had divorced Peter Breslin, he would have killed both of them in the event that he found out her son was anything other than human.
At least Lenore might be considered rational. It was her former sister-in-law who had first assisted her in evading Peter and finding safety elsewhere.
"You've gone dead quiet, Ava. "What the heck is going on?" Gin had inquired.
"Just some thoughts."
"Yes, from where I am, I can hear the cogs of your machine turning. There's more to it than what you're telling me,"
"I believe it would be best for you to come over. It's a long tale, but suffice it to say that I don't want it to alter your perception of who I am.
"It's not like you sold me to the bone fairies," the other person said. How terrible could it possibly be?
“Bad. The worst possible."
"I'm sorry, but I won't be able to get to it until later since Redwood Number Two is on his way to your house at this minute."
“Shit.” She toyed with the idea of fleeing.
"Don't run. They take the thrill of the pursuit far too seriously, Gin cautioned.
"It's as if you read my mind," the person said.
"It doesn't take a genius to figure out that you'd turn tail and go if given the chance."
Ava cursed once again and said, "Shit. Crap"
"Shit, crap, shit," Elijah muttered.
"Be quiet, and don't even think of saying it. It's not a nice word."
He laughed as he began to undress and said something like "shit, crap, shit..." the entire time.
She was conflicted. In most cases, Ava was forced to physically remove him from his clothing in order to get him to take a bath. She came to the conclusion that she would like it if he had a clean mouth but a dirty face. His newest favorite expression would not leave a mark on the sofa.Maybe if she didn’t act like it was a huge issue, he’d stop?“Shit, crap, shit, shit… sheeeee—-ittttttt.” He laughed madly.
Yeah, she was in quite a pickle.
"Ava, have you checked in recently?"
"Yes, I must go. I'll call you later. By the way, was it necessary for you to give him my address?
"I didn't. He is trying to get a whiff of you."
“Gross.”
"It's what it is. Call me later." The fairy became stuck.
She had no choice but to look the situation in the eye and accept the consequences. Really, all she had to do was inform him; but, what if he got upset? What if he Changed right there in the broad light of day and ripped her apart because he was so angry?
Except from Elijah, she'd never had the opportunity to get such a firsthand encounter with a Changed werewolf before. He was really cute, and his little teeth never caused any harm to anyone. Grayson, on the other hand, was a fully developed man, complete with all of the testosterone and wrath...
Ava made an effort to swallow. She made an effort to call to mind the fact that he had never harmed her when they were in Santorini.
Oh, God, what was she thinking? He'd appeared to be so... unthreatening. Sure, he wasn't exactly harmless, but... for fuck's sake, he was an art student! Students in art classes read poetry, discussed architectural structures like arches, and examined the relationship between form and function. They also sought for more elevated forms of enjoyment.
They did not transform into scaly murderers that tore regular people to shreds and ate their flesh.
Elijah turned his head to look at her from where he was washing his hair in the bathtub while applying shampoo with great care. "Are we going to have to relocate once more, Mama?"
"I can't say for sure. Maybe.”
"I can sense your fear. There is no need to be afraid."
"Alright, Elijah. You just go ahead and take a shower, and I promise I won't be afraid."
“Promise?” His enormous amber eyes gleamed. "I'll defend and protect you, Mama." He banged on his little chest with a fist that was even tinier than himself.
She felt the traces of a tear in the corner of her eye. It made her want to cry just thinking about her small baby already experiencing these things, already claiming his territory, and already getting ready to battle to preserve what was rightfully his.
"I promise, little man. Just purge yourself.
He confirmed this with a resounding nod.
Perhaps there was enough time to run, right? The possibility that she may grab him and get in the car and…. she was overthinking in her head, when she heard a loud knock on the door.
Bloody Hell.
The wolf was already standing at the door.
"Ava, it's me. Grayson yelled "Open the door!" when there was no answer to his knocking on the door. It's possible that he should have given himself some time to consider what he wanted to say, but instead, he was overcome with an urgent desire to go after her.He was aware of the need for what it was, which was the need to lay claim to her. Grayson left Ava's small house on Bug Boot Lane, which got its name from the niece of Eleanor Westwood, and called Kyle right away."We're in a jam," he told Kyle when he replied."Don't tell me there's another one of those jerks out there who can't be hurt by silver. No, wait. Let me guess. A raid by the bone fairies? Because last time—"When he thought about the bone fairies, he got a shiver. Rude people. “No. There is a Redwood descendant."Kyle had a cough. “What? Excuse me? It's not, Taylor, damn you. Someone should have talked to him about birds, bees, and puppies, I told you."Even though his brother couldn't see it, Grayson's lip curled into a smirk. "That isn't Taylor."“You?” It was quiet for a long time. "Who's she? Does she put the Secret in danger?""Ava Harlowe is the woman from Santorini I told you about. She is in Blue Willow now." He inhaled deeply. "With my son, the boy.""Are you sure?" Kyle asked. "You know, when this much money is on the line—""He was born with t
He couldn't believe his sweet, innocent Ava had ever been married to Peter Breslin. Breslin was hated by all of the supes. He was a hunter who killed because he didn't like things that were different from him. He believed in extermination, genocide. He was in charge of a group of dangerous hunters who shared his beliefs. When he tried to kill Catalina Romulus at the Great Council in Rome, she bit him. He changed. Now he was one of them, and he had inherited her illness, which made him more dangerous. He was immune to silver. It was clear why Ava was scared. Before he was Turned, Breslin was a monster who liked to kill women and children for fun.Damn it, he'd just… He saw that his clothes were almost off. His pants were hanging off of him dangerously, and the fine linen was all torn up. He didn't have a shirt to speak of.She gently shook her head. "I can't go to Aphelion, but you're going to force me to, aren't you?""I just want to keep you safe.""Peter always said that."If he wer
When Ava asked Grayson to come over for some sex, she couldn't believe what she had just done. He felt so good because it had been so long since she had been touched. Even though it wasn't the best choice, he went ahead and made it.She reached out and took his hand, then led him into the house.Everything made her feel bad about herself all of a sudden. About the toys that are all over the floor, the old furniture, and how old she is as a person. She didn't have polish on her fingernails, her hair was a mess, and she hadn't shaved her legs since... well, she didn't even want to think about how long it had been. Not to mention taking care of the woman's garden. Most likely, dust was all over it.What did she think at that moment? In Santorini, the package included sand and sea, hot days and even hotter nights, the guy who had blown her mind, and her clit. She had been thinking the exact same thing. At this point, Ava didn't know what to do. She had been able to get him inside. She had
He was surrounded by pheromones, which gave him a head rush.Grayson tried hard to keep his beast under control, but it was hard. He now deeply understood the pain Kyle had been through before Randi was Changed. How hard it had been for him to struggle to get the self-control that had been so easy to get for so long.So early on, the Redwoods were taught when and how to hold back the beast that lived inside them and when and how to let him go. Before they were allowed to interact with regular people, they had already learned how to control people very well.He had his first taste of this craziness earlier that day, when he was on the plane with Randi and she was trying to break the link between herself and Kyle. But that wasn't anything compared to how he felt right now.Grayson had a hard time understanding that his mate was scared and there was nothing he could do about it, but also that she was scared of him. He just couldn't understand why she was afraid of him. that she didn't kn
"Just now, I was thinking about that boat in Santorini."She smiled. "Me too. C'mon!""Look, that will not work."Ava's eyebrows went up. "I'll punch you in the face if you say something stupid about women who drive. Arewolves or not?"He gave her a smile. "No, nothing like that. Westwood would knock me into my next life. I'm not stupid." Grayson gave a head shake. "You're beautiful, Ava. And you make me feel. But you already said no. I don't want to put any pressure on you.""You mean what?"He chose to be direct. "Get a hard on, Ava."“Oh!” Her face got red. "Well, I mean… just get on the damn broom.""If you're sure." He sat on the broomstick behind her, and in two words, it was exquisite torture. How long does it take to get to Aphelion? she asked, out of breath. It was good for his pride to know that she wasn't unaffected. He knew she wanted him, that she wanted a person like him."Just a short time." He reached around her to point to the hill in the distance. "From here, you can
His words were supposed to comfort her, but instead, she couldn't help but dwell on what he would be missing out on by being with a mate who couldn't fully embrace his true self, just like he deserved."What does that mean for you?" she asked."Let's not discuss this anymore, okay? We've had enough of it. All the darkness and fear will still be waiting for us when we return. Today, let's take a walk on the beach. Let's talk about things like we used to when we first met.""You were studying art," she recalled. She had thought he was perfect back then, and she was pleasantly surprised when he asked her out for coffee. Her stomach was filled with butterflies every time he looked at her.To be honest, she still felt that way."I still am. I'll always have the heart of an artist," he replied."And the soul of a wolf," she added."All creative individuals must have that, if they want to survive," he explained.Ava buried her toes deeper into the sand, feeling the water slowly inching its w
Ava experienced a delightful mix of anticipation and jitters as she readied herself for the inaugural visiting day at the Academy. The separation from Noah had been challenging, yet deep down, she knew it was the best choice they could make. The knowledge that he was secure among his peers, acquiring knowledge and blossoming into his own while still relishing his childhood, brought her solace. This period of separation had proven advantageous for Ava as well. It afforded her the opportunity to reclaim her identity as a wolf and skillfully navigate the intricate terrain of straddling two worlds. The profound connection she forged with the Okami granted her a profound sense of restoration and a rekindling of her untamed spirit. As she observed her husband gracefully moving about their dwelling at Aphelion, casually tending to everyday tasks like slipping on socks and securing his shoelaces, Ava couldn't help but ponder how far they had journeyed. In the depths of her mind, she realized
"You might want to step back," she cautioned, a primal howl escaping her throat.Grayson appeared unsettled, yet she bared her teeth at him. I don't need you to rescue me. She hoped he understood her message. He extended his arms to hold the pack at bay, and together they stood, waiting."Why don't you run, Royce?" she taunted. "I know how much you relish the chase.""Perhaps you've forgotten the rules of this game." He produced an amulet, thrusting it in her direction. But it had no effect, not even a tingle. "Would you like me to enlighten you on where you messed up?" Her voice had deepened even further.Royce fumbled with the amulet."You twisted a wolf spirit that already existed in this realm. You merged it with the Okami—my own wolf spirit. You took it, crushed it, tore it apart, but like a fool, you pieced it back together. Now, it and I are one once more. It belongs to me. I am... it. You hold no power over us."DeVayne underwent a transformation unlike any natural werewolf. H
"No bells ringing in that pretty head yet?" he taunted, coming to a halt. "Right here is where they snuffed out your life the first time." He jerked her arm and pulled her towards a small hideaway nestled within a well-groomed garden that bordered the edge of the forest. "And right here is where they brought you back to life."Flashes of bloodshed and torment exploded like fireworks behind her closed eyes."Anything coming back?" he probed."No," she fibbed, hiding the fragments of memories threatening to overwhelm her."Here," he forcefully dragged her towards the crumbling remains of what used to be a majestic country mansion. The dilapidated house cast a daunting shadow, its grandeur long faded. "This is where DeVayne's savage creatures had their way with you."The memories surged forth once more, and her body reacted to the recollection, even if her mind resisted acknowledging it."I bet you can feel it right now, their foul breath lingering on the back of your throat. Their claws
In the realm of slumber, Ava became acutely aware that she was ensconced in an extraordinary, lucid reverie. The world around her was awash with surreal hues and captivating textures, leaving no doubt that this was indeed a dream. Amidst this phantasmagorical landscape, her senses were stirred by an eerie presence hovering above her bed: a mysterious figure shrouded in a cloak. Ava was convinced that this could only be a figment of her dreaming mind. She felt as if she had slumbered for an eternity, her eyes encrusted with fine grains of sand, her body laden with weariness, and her lips tender and chafed, as if they had been the recipients of fervent kisses. The memory of the sugar statue came rushing back, and a sense of trepidation took hold. But the cloaked figure interrupted her train of thought, dismissing the concern with an enigmatic statement."No, fret not about him. He's inconsequential. It's only you, and me," the figure murmured, as his eyes were suddenly engulfed in dark
He didn't care about anyone's opinion, he didn't care if Westwood was furious, nothing mattered except Ava and Noah.As he stepped into Aphelion, gratitude flooded his heart for his family, his brothers, his pack. He couldn't help but imagine what it would be like to face DeVayne, Monk, and all the other looming threats alone. It would be like suffocating, like being submerged in a never-ending abyss. The moment he entered, Mrs. Westwood appeared by his side, her presence a comforting anchor. "Let's get her to your room," she said with urgency."It was DeVayne. He was here," Grayson revealed, his voice filled with a mix of anger and frustration."That's impossible," Mrs. Westwood replied, her brows furrowing in concern."And yet, he stood right in front of Gin, demanding Ava," Grayson confirmed, the memory seared into his mind.A crackle of lightning danced a
Grayson Redwood had always prided himself on his unwavering self-control. He mastered the art of maintaining his human facade, concealing the primal wolf within until the opportune moment arose. His expertise lay in communication, diplomacy, but when the time called for it, his ferocious teeth would be bared. However, upon witnessing the statue of Royce DeVayne positioned beside his mate's crumpled form, the warrior within Grayson erupted, tearing through his flesh to reveal his true form. Unexpectedly, it was Parker, his own brother, who interposed himself between Grayson and the exit of the sweet shop."Brother, hold on. Think," Parker implored, extending his hands as a gesture of peace.Grayson let out a deafening roar, but Parker refused to retreat. "Do you not see why he appeared here? To taunt you, to prove a point. What you must do now is attend to your mate. Bring her back to Aphelion, send Mrs. Westwood with Noa
"You're right," Gin agreed, savoring another cupcake. "Sorry, I tend to rely on sugar when I'm nervous.""It's your face. Fill it with whatever makes you happy," Ava assured her, harboring no judgment."He's the Watcher, right?" Gin inquired."That's my understanding. But he's not one of those who hurt you," Ava reassured her, trying to alleviate any lingering concerns."I'll go. I'll despise myself if I don't. It'll be that nagging voice in the back of my mind, reminding me of all the things I should have done but couldn't. It'll be the evidence that voice needs to convince me that I'm weak," Gin confessed, her voice tinged with vulnerability."You're not weak. You're incredible. Look at everything you've endured and all that you've accomplished. Here, have another cupcake," Ava encouraged, urging Gin to enjoy the sweet treat.Gin followed Ava's advice and s
"What is it?" Lenore inquired, her eyes focused on the path ahead."Noah. Grayson wants to send him to the Academy, and I... I don't know," Ava confessed, her voice tinged with uncertainty. A part of her secretly wished that Lenore would strongly oppose the idea, reassuring her that it was a terrible decision. She longed to keep her son close, feeling that five years old was much too young for him to be separated from her.But the truth was, Noah wasn't five anymore, was he?Lenore paused for a moment, contemplating her response. "If it were me, I would do it. I understand that you'll miss him tremendously, but the Academy is perhaps the safest place besides Aphelion. Plus, it would allow him to enjoy his childhood a little while longer," she offered.Ava sighed, her conflicted emotions evident. "I was hoping you would tell me it was a terrible idea."Lenore shook her head gently
Discovering Lenore in the midst of packing her equipment, Ava lunged forward and embraced her tightly."You're fortunate I heard you before you pounced!" Lenore playfully teased, returning the hug."I don't want you to leave," Ava murmured into Lenore's shoulder. "I know you have to, I know you will, but I don't want you to."Lenore soothingly rubbed her back. "It's going to be alright, Ava. Remember, I'm the infamous and intimidating Lenore Breslin. I'm so fearsome that your mate rushed to protect you when he saw me near Noah. They're all afraid of me. Even Peter.""That's what makes him even more dangerous. I just wish it didn't have to be you.""But it does, and that's alright," Lenore replied, breaking the hug. "This is what I'm meant to do.""Everything is changing so rapidly, but maybe it's meant to change," Ava pondered."I believe it is. And I'll let you in on a little secret that should bring some comfort. I have something special in my pocket," Lenore revealed.Ava cast her
