#76 Tall Walls

Jake's POV Continued...

To my relief, she didn't push me away. She didn't reject me. But that doesn't mean she was reciprocating. Her body tensed like she was made of stone. I could feel the wall between us—taller and thicker than ever.

God, it hurt. More than I could ever explain.

I held her tighter, burying my face in her hair, hoping against hope that she would forgive me, that she would understand. But I knew this wasn’t something that could be easily forgiven. The mistake, the betrayal, it was fresh and raw. Still, I couldn’t let go.

And then, I felt it. The wetness soaking into the fabric between us. I realized, with a sudden, sharp pang, that I was crying.

I was about to look away to hide it from her. I didn't want to force her and make her think I was playing with her emotions by crying.

She stiffened at first, but then, slowly, painfully, she turned in my arms. Her eyes when finally met mine, I felt like I couldn't breathe anymore. They were filled with hurt, anger, and love,
