#58 Nightmare

I woke up suddenly, my heart racing. I looked around, the unfamiliar room making me even more uncomfortable. I was about to run when I felt Jake near me. My breathing became a bit normal, a feeling of safety rushing over me.

The cabin was quiet except for the crickets and the only sound of the soft crackling of the fire in the hall. Jake’s steady breathing beside me gave me some strength. I blinked, trying to shake off the remnants of the dream that had jolted me awake.

The fire. It had been about the fire - a memory I had tried so hard to forget with a heavy dose of medicines. I no longer knew what really happened, with each passing day it became blurrier. I thought it was for the best. But now, after so many years, here it was back to haunt me on this night!

In my dream, I saw the flames again, devouring everything.

Flames. Everywhere.

"Mom!"

"Dad!"

"Aunt!"

I cried for help. But the only thing that I could hear was the sound of something bursting or someone burning, crying for help
