Chapter 2
The door opened to this really large and well-furnished room.
There were four girls in it, and...' Yo! What the hell are you waiting for? "Come in, junior," a loud voice rang through my ears as I jolted in shock.
I didn't need a fortune teller to tell me that she was the boss here.I briskly walked in.
It was definitely too early to pick a fight; otherwise, I would have said one or two nasty things.
"I'm Ava," she said as she brushed a loose strand of her black hair out of her eyes.
"I'm the only senior in this room, so please stay out of my way if you want us to live, well, peacefully."
She sure is beautiful; she is really slim and smallish for someone with such a sassy attitude; she had bold eyes like SpongeBob, a tiny nose, and tiny lips; plus, she's black just like me.
Sheesh, she's a senior?
She doesn't seem like a proper lady to me.I simply nodded and followed the girl, who grabbed my luggage as soon as I walked in.
She halted at a well-laid twin bed."Hi, my name is Catherine, but everyone calls me Katie. We're going to be best friends; I can feel it." She said it with a broad smile.
Creepy. I thought as I shrugged uncomfortably.
She wore casual trousers and a V-necked blue top, which everyone else in the room wore.
She's also really pretty.
She helped me unpack and arrange all my things. The other girls came and introduced themselves as Maya and Zaya.Twins.
Finally, as anticipated, it was time for bed. I was extremely tired, and I slept immediately.
*****************
I felt something cool drop on my face; I was way into my satisfying sleep, so I ignored it.
A few more drops
Splashhhh.
I sprang up from my bed to see the lady who showed me to my room holding a bucket.
"Follow me immediately."
And as drenched as a bird just beaten by rain, I followed sluggishly till we were out of the room, and I was shocked to see the girls from each of the rooms all lined up and fully dressed in their uniforms; I almost mistook them for angels.
No! I'm not exaggerating.
As soon as I recovered from my shock, I heard giggles and whispers everywhere.
"Go down and give me 20," she said.
"Huh, you need 20 bucks?" Oh, no need to go down for that, if I could just go into...
Grab.
She grabbed me by the neck.
I was so... not scared.I mean, I'm the one and only Jeanne Brown. Now the hallway was filled with laughter.
"Silence!" she yelled, and order was restored. I didn't find anything funny; was there some kind of inside joke?
"Go down and give me twenty pushups, you moron."
Me?
LmaoPush ups?No way.
I'm not a sporty person, like, not in the slightest.Yes, I said I get into fights.
I never said I would win them.Someone has to lose.and that someone was always me."I said go down and give me twenty pushups," she yelled even louder.
Swiftly, I went down and began; it took me about a minute to do even one.
"Ava, you're her room senior. Make sure she finishes."
"Yes, ma'am," she screamed, like the lady wasn't standing right in front of her.
What is even wrong with these people?
Every single pushup felt like I was a step closer to death.
Why didn't anyone wake me up?, Why didn't little Miss's "going to be best friends" wake me up?
I'm already hating this silly school.
After what seemed like an eternity, I was finally done.
Ava left for class after telling me to get ready and go to class too.
I took a nice long shower; all my body ached, and then I put on my uniform, purposely taking my time.
I stepped out of the door and walked less.
than ten steps before realizing I didn't know which way to go.I heard footsteps behind me and turned to see a lady.
I hate talking to people who have glasses on; they seem like know-it-alls, and this lady wore one.
This time, I really needed her help.
"Hello Jeanne," she said slowly, reading my name tag. Why are you still in the dormitory block at this time?
'I'm kinda lost ma'am'
"I see, what year are you in?"
"First year"
"Follow me"
We went down about seven sets of stairs on each floor, each looking exactly like the previous one. There's no way I'm getting lost again.
I can't believe I walked up these stairs yesterday without knowing; it's not possible.
We walked past the courtyard and two blocks, and finally we arrived at a block not as tall as the previous ones.
A large board read "freshmen's block."
"Here we are, Jeanne," she said, smiling.
"I completely appreciate it."
My body was already giving up on me as I walked into a classroom and sighted Katie; she waved and pointed to a chair right next to hers.
I walked slowly, and I couldn't feel my legs anymore. I felt dizzy, staggered a little, and then I fell.
I heard Katie scream my name and screams all around until it faded slowly.
I passed out.
********************************
Chapter 3I woke up to this well-furnished white room, and I thought I was in heaven until I noticed this boy sleeping in an armchair next to my bed.I didn't know boys went to this school; he had the exact same uniform I had on, except instead of a skirt, he wore pants. Our uniform is nothing too impressive.Checkered skirts with white shirts, a checkered bow tie, and a black blazer with black extremely long stockingsHe had a chiseled jaw, well-greased black hair, and pale skin. He was so cute—probably the cutest boy I've ever seen.My heart ached. What the hell is this feeling? Jeanne doesn't think any boy's cute. Jeanne's heart doesn't ache or beat fast.I was so captivated, I didn't know when I knelt next to the armchair, admiring every bit of his face.He suddenly opened his eyes."What the hell, freak!" he yelled; he had every right to be startled."I'm so... sorry. You seemed like you passed out, so I was just... ""Hehe, what a lame lie." You couldn't come up with something b
Chapter 4"YOU HAVE 5 MINUTES TO REPORT TO THE CAFETERIA," came a voice so loud it could deafen.5 minutes? It takes more than five minutes to go down the stairs.'How is that even......'I looked around to see no one in the room, and then it hit me.I might actually miss my food. These people are insane enough to deprive someone of food over a little tardiness.I ran down the stairs and through the basketball court, and I just kept following the crowd. Why in the hell do we have to go through the basketball court to get to the cafeteria? Well, finally, we got to the cafeteria.I was amazed at the number of people I saw there.I walked around aimlessly, looking for somewhere to sit. No one else seemed to have that problem; they all knew where to sit.I walked up to a table with just one person at it, and as I made my way to sit down,"That seat is taken," she snarled without even looking at me.The search for a seat continued as I tried to catch my breath from what seemed like a death
Chapter 5Thud, thud, thud Katie started to bang on the elevator door."Stopppp, stopp that," I said as I grabbed her hands."You have to calm down, Katie." "What's the worst that could happen?""This is bad, this is really bad.." she said as she grabbed her inhaler from her backpack. She has asthma? Now I understand her panic.Oh no!Now that I might be responsible for someone's life, I didn't care about getting caught.I started banging on the door.I continued banging till my palms reddened.Katie, I promise, I'll get you out in time."How long have we been here?" she asked, taking another puff from her inhaler.'30 minutes'"How long can a human stay without air again?""Now is not the time to ask science questions." "Katie, get up and help me scream.""Helpppp, helpppp," we screamed in unison.Still no one.I was tired, my brain felt cloudy, and my vision became blurry. We both sat on the ground, hoping and praying for a savior. While trying to fall asleep, I heard a gasp.I spr
Chapter 6Edward's P.O.V*****************Magdalene school...When I first got here, I had hoped for one thing: And that was a lack of boredom. My mom made sure I was treated with respect, gave me most of the things I wanted, and tried to make Magdalene School a comfortable place for me to stay. She told me that it would help a lot in shaping my future as the heir to our family business, and well, I agreed.I am the school's national treasure,I hate to brag, but it is the truth. The teachers and students adore me, and I feel like they look up to me too. There aren't many boys in our school; in fact, the total percentage of boys to girls was 20% to 80%.Being one of the very few good-looking guys and the richest helped me live a pretty admirable life.I'm the leader of the dance club.I and Matthew, my best friend, were usually in the dance studio most of the time. When I first got here, all they danced was the Waltz.Waltz?I brought up hip-hop dancing, and the school approved it because i
I found Katie and Maya waiting for me.For the first time, Maya was without Zaya."I heard what happened to you; are you okay?"Katie asked as we all walked back to the dormitory."Sure, I'm good," I mumbled, completely exhausted."Don't you think we should take the elevator?" She teased, and I immediately remembered our escapade with the elevator.I doubt I'll ever get in an elevator again."I'll kill you," I replied, laughing, and she laughed too. I stole a glance at Maya, and she looked so left out that I felt bad for her."Where's Zaya?" I asked none of them in particular, hoping to include her."A.P. physics after the school meeting," Katie replied."Smart," I whispered, and we walked straight into the building. We got into our room and..."Jay, come here!" yelled Ava, pulling me by the hair."I know what you did; I know you had this all planned out; you wanted to spend quality time with Edward so you could seduce him," she ranted, her nostrils flaring comically."Now you hold
Maybe I'm just overreacting.Maybe it's just a stranger minding his own business.I turned around, and the first thing I noticed was a really shiny pen knife in the hand of a filthy-looking man.He was completely clothed in all black tattered clothes, making sure no skin was showing except his face; his hair was long and black with very few white strands.Slowly he walked closer, and slowly I retreated my steps until I was up against the wall."Tu parles français?" He asked, meaning, "Do you speak French?""Oui," I replied, trying to hide my fear. My mom made my sisters and me take French classes one summer, and I'm glad I did."Now, pretty girl, I don't mean to harm you." "I'd let you go if you're good and do exactly as I say," he said again in French in the most creepy way possible.I simply nodded."Good, give me all the money you have." He smiled, revealing an uneven set of brown teeth."I don't have any money..." I'm not from here; I'm a foreign student; I'm here for... I begged.
I woke up.Yes, I didn't die.I was in the same room as when I fainted after walking down a billion stairs."Jay, omg, Jay, I heard what happened," Katie said as she ran into the room. My eyes were barely open because of my splitting headache, but I saw how wet her face was with tears."I'm fine, really," I replied as she helped me get up."I'm sorry I wasn't the one to rescue you; I know how weak you are." She ranted, and my brows rose because her tone offended me."Wait, I don't understand; what do you mean by weak?" I tried to yell, but I was too weak to do so."Like I know how weak you are, Jay, in a white society, and how hard it must be for you to be in a white school." "That's why I'm your friend—to help you." She blurted out."Oh! So this is about race," I thought, and my heart wept bitterly."So technically, you decided to be friends with me because you think I'm weak?" I said, with the pitch of my voice rapidly rising. The nurse just went about her usual business, like a fig
Expulsion???She calls that being fair?"But, Miss Ge..." I protested."I don't want to hear it.""Get out of my office, both of you. I'll call you when the expulsion letter is issued." She replied sternly as she adjusted her glasses on her nose."This can't be happening.""I hate this school, but this can't be happening." I whispered, completely bewildered.I shut my eyes at Katie, and she shut her sorry, teary eyes at me. Of course she should be, but she wasn't bold enough to come clean.I hate her.Not like I would come clean if I were in her shoes, but still...Hate her, y'all.I hissed and stormed away, thinking of how I was going to tell my mom because she'd definitely kill me this time.I kept thinking and wishing it would all go away as I walked straight to the garden.People kept staring at me, and it confirmed the fact that news sure travels fast in this school.Since the day Katie showed me around, I've never actually been to the garden again. It felt like a place of sorrow
Chapter 11Edward's povThe bell for recess went and as I strolled down to the cafeteria, I kept thinking about why I even helped Jay out of her predicament.I don't know why, buy after seeing her cry, I just felt obliged to make sure she doesn't cry again."What are you up to Eddie?" Ava snarled as she ran up to me."Firstly, never call me that again. And then what exactly are you talking about?" I replied, showing no interest in the conversation she was trying to start."Don't act dumb, you know what I'm saying. And I'll call you whatever I feel like!" She yelled back in her annoying British accent."Listen Ava, whatever it is you're talking about isn't my problem right now, so please can you just let me have a normal recess?" I asked and she stared at me blankly.I let out a heavy sigh and walked over to the cafeteria while holding her hand."Hey you two, why is your face squeezed Ava?" Matthew asked as we took our seats and Ava hissed loudly."Apparently, she's upset because I tal
