I checked the rearview mirror every few seconds to see if the black Harley was tailing me, but it wasn't. To make sure the asshole wasn't, I ended up driving around the neighbourhood a few times to throw off any trails. I fished out the phone from my pocket after I was certain I had covered up my tracks and saw the missed call from Helen.
At the speed I had been driving around the neighbourhood -making sure to avoid the street Blade lived on- I reached the house not long after and returned the Beetle to the garage in case those idiots drove around searching for the car.
It was completely dark out at this point and I hurried into the empty house dashing up the stairs two at a time. That was close. I hadn't expected those three morons to be back so soon. I could have easily given them the slip if that blonde-haired doofus hadn't been outside the door. I should have kicked him in the groin a second time just for being there.
I headed to my bedroom and opened the door and it slammed behind me, and I flicked the lights on. The evening hadn't gone to plan. I crossed the space over to the bed and flung myself onto it scowling.
I was so fricking close to getting the payback I had been envisioning all day.
It took a couple of minutes of grouchiness before I noticed the door was repaired. I sat up in bed eyeing the pale peach coloured bedroom from wall to wall, nothing was missing - well nothing obvious anyway. Everything looked to be in place so that meant the old perverted hairy bastard didn't rummage around going through my stuff and discovered anything highly incriminating.
The mac and cheese from earlier was beginning to make me feel queasy and my stomach to turn. The front door downstairs opened and Victor's voice came booming up the stairs and a minute later Helen's voice joined his.
"Adam?! Secret?!" she calls and I scoffed.
I pulled the earphones from my pocket and stuffed the earbuds into my ear before scrolling through the endless list of songs on my cellphone. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody came blasting through the earbuds in my ears and I hummed along long enough before my eyes closed and I fell asleep.
đ
The starting of an engine was enough to wake me from my slumber. I opened my eyes feeling just as groggy as I had before I had drifted off to sleep. I had slept across the bed and I was still fully dressed in the jeans, jacket and boots I had been wearing the day before. A bit of music flowed from the earbuds and I picked the cellphone up and pushed the power key. It was already 7:40 AM. I had slept through the alarm and Helen hadn't come to wake me, leaving me with under an hour and twenty minutes to get to John Wickerman High. My first day at a new school and I was already going to be late.
Great. Just great.
The little battery symbol at the top right-hand corner of the cellphone screen flashed eight per cent. I had fallen asleep with the music playing and awakened to an almost dead battery. I pulled my tired limp body from the bed and stretched lazily, yawning. Outside was already buzzing as the neighbours were getting ready for work like the model citizens they were. I opened the window curtains, and early morning light flooded the room causing me to squint. The curtains at the window in Emmett's room was widely open exposing the scantily furnished messy bedroom of the teenage boy.
He was pacing around his room and I looked down at the cellphone that was still in my grasp. With this low battery percentage, the stupid thing wouldn't allow me to use the camera. Emmett's eyes flickered over his shoulder sensing he was being watched just as my eyes flickered from the cellphone back to his room. From what I could see of him, he was wearing only a pair of black basketball shorts that were hanging a bit too low. Even with bed hair, he was still sexy.
Something shifted in the bed in his room which caught my attention. I couldn't see most of his bedroom clearly from my room, but the bit that I could glimpse was enough to know that he wasn't alone. A long slender leg stuck out from the sheets on the bed. Whoever it was must have only just awakened because only seconds later, tiny feminine hands stretched out in a yawn. From my bedroom window, I spotted the bedsheets hanging around her body like a toga, which meant she was probably stark naked underneath.
Emmett approached the window slowly, and without making eye contact he closed the window curtains. It took me a few second to realize what had just happened and I turned and walked away from the window grumpily. I put the cellphone to charge before going to the bathroom to take a shower. I grimaced at my bedridden appearance in the mirror and stripped out of the clothes and got into the shower.
The clock in the kitchen flashed 8:30 after I got dressed and headed downstairs. A sticky note with my name sloppily written on it was left on the refrigerator door and I got closer to read the fine print properly as it was scribbled hastily.
Secret,
money in the jar to get breakfast.- HelenHelen had already left without so much as a damn goodbye, or even an, enjoy your first day at your new hell.
Some parent she was.
I retrieved the dollar notes from the jar on the counter and left the kitchen; then headed back up the stairs to grab the satchel and cellphone that was now passed the halfway mark, before heading out to the garage to get the Beetle. I opened the door and got inside and started the vehicle; as soon as I had successfully exited the garage, I closed the garage door and climbed back inside. The high school was only fifteen minutes away by estimation which left me with absolutely no time to spare. A sticky note was stuck to the windshield which I had not noticed the first time and I stared at the back of the thing trying to read what was written on it.
School begins at 9. Don't be late.
- Victor"I hope this doesn't turn out to be a treasure hunt," I mumbled softly, "because if it does then I'm definitely going to be late."
I thought about doubling back around the house in case there were more sticky notes left in less obvious places. The Beetle backed out of the driveway and out onto the street. I was heading in the same direction I had been to and from the last two days. There weren't many other cars around at this time and I drove along at a moderate pace. The clock on the dashboard read 8:50 AM just as I got close to Blade's house. The windows were rolled all the way up and the Beetle cruised along, as I kept my eyes trained on the modern two-storey dwelling I had broken into the night before.
His Harley was parked in the driveway again but the SUV wasn't there. The Beetle slowed and I pulled over onto the sidewalk just as I had done the day before. No one came from the house for about a minute. The garage of the house which I was parked in front of was open and I started the car and pulled into their driveway and rolled the Beetle into their empty garage.
There were all sorts of toolboxes just lying around even with the garage door open. The car engine died and I opened the car door and got out and walked slowly around the sides eyeing the strange people's garage. Whoever owned the house must have not had any young kids, because the tools weren't even secured. I kicked at a toolbox with my shoe and it rattled causing the nuts and bolts inside to clunk.
Vroom!
The motorcycle revving startled me and I ducked in front of the car hoping he hadn't glimpsed me when he came out of the house. The Harley roared mildly this time and I glanced out from in front of the car to see what was happening.
It was him alright. That son of a bitch.
The motorcycle rode out slowly onto the street and I couldn't see beyond his black helmet. Instead of speeding away the motorcycle slowed before it came to a stop. Blade's focus was suddenly turned to the blue house across the street from his. The asshole had noticed the Beetle in the garage and I thought the idiot wouldn't have realized but he does come with a few surprises. I peeked out from the car to see what was happening again and the motorcycle purred and he rode the Harley over to the sidewalk and cut the engine before getting off.
His heavy boots moved slowly coming up the driveway. I reached my hand out and grasped the tool closest to me. I glanced at what I was holding before clutching it with both hands. I clenched the crowbar that had been lying nearby on the floor and peered out from my hiding spot again. His footsteps got closer and closer to the garage and I tightened my grip on the crowbar counting the seconds until he got close enough.
"Blade?!" A shaky, aged voice calls.
His footsteps came to a halt and there was no way I could risk peeking out again and give away my hiding spot. Not at this moment.
"Morning, Mrs Wesley," he calls back to the elderly woman.
"What are you doing?" The nosey neighbour queries.
"Just thought I saw something," He called back and my palms became sweatier.
I hissed under my breath. "Quit the chit chat and come closer you asshole."
He started moving again and I held a firmer grip to the piece of tool with my sweaty hands and waited for him to come closer.
"He was supposed to be close by now," I hiss again.
I peeked out from in front of the car risking getting caught. His footsteps weren't getting closer, they were moving away back down the driveway. Blade reached his Harley and pulled on his helmet then got back onto the motorcycle.
The neighbour seemed to shout a farewell but Blade only started the Harley and rode off without a reply. I lowered the crowbar back to the floor and stood slowly from where I had been crouching in front of the Beetle.
I watched his house to see if anyone else would be coming out, so far no one did. This was probably my only chance at getting back at the piece of shit. I pulled the zipper on my Darth Vader mask hoodie up to my neck and pulled the hoodie over my head but left my face bare. I didn't want to draw too much attention from any unsuspecting neighbours by using the mask, plus I hated the stupid eye holes that came with it.
I sauntered out of the garage trying to act as normal as possible, walking down the driveway and across the street with both hands tucked into my pockets. I didn't look around to see if anyone was watching, to avoid making any form of eye contact while I marched up the driveway to Blade's house. The garage was empty and the SUV wasn't in sight.
I crept along the side of the house slowly listening and peering around for any sign that someone was probably home. The house appeared pretty empty from the outside, and I checked the doors if they were unlocked but found them to be bolted from the inside. I stepped down from the back porch and walked along the sides slowly peering around before checking the side windows that I was tall enough to reach or see-through anyways, but those too were closed. I made my way quietly back to the front of the house and up the porch to check the final door around the front which turned out closed like all the rest.
Shit!
"There must be something around here that would come in handy." I frown.
My eyes did a full 360 of the empty porch and a rock on the lawn where the flowers were caught my attention. I made my way back down the porch and over to the rock and pried it from its mount of earth. I still needed to get to the back door without drawing any further attention to myself.
Why couldn't they hide a spare key under the mat like most people?
A clay jar that I hadn't noticed before caught my attention. It was the only jar surrounded by a bunch of flower pots which made it look slightly out of place. I dropped the rock back to the earth and walked over to check it out. It had a small lid and looked like the perfect place to stash anything. I lifted the jar and it made a soft rattling sound in my hand. I shook it again and there were more rattles. I set it back to where it was and removed the moulded clay jar lid and shoved my hand into the opening and felt around on the inside. Something cold and metal hit my finger and I removed my hand and looked down at what was etched between my fingers.
Bingo.
I grinned at the sight of the little silver key dangling from my index finger. This was going to be easier than I thought it would have been.
I glanced over my shoulder to check the surroundings again and an elderly silver-haired woman wearing hair curlers sat on her front porch with a knitting kit in hand. She rocked back and forth on her rocker paying absolutely zero attention to me in the Collins' front yard and I gripped the little silver key in my hand and walked back to the porch.
The key fitted easily in the keyhole and I turned it slowly which was then followed by the soft clicking sound of the door unlocking. My fingers fumbled with the keys and I shoved them in the pocket of my hoodie and turned the doorknob slowly. Once again the door opened effortlessly, and I peered over my shoulder one last time before taking a step forward and letting myself in.
The door closed quietly once I had taken a step inside and pulled the hoodie from my head. Only eerie silence and loneliness welcomed me in.My eyes did a sweep of the great room I was standing in, taking in once again its modern decor and furnishings. Hell, this woman could be Helen's long lost twin with the flower pots and her painting of nothing but sticks and bushes hanging on the wall.I took some steps forward and peered around for a bit, while still listening to any strange sounds but the only sound at the moment was that of my shoes on the floor. The house didn't strike me as somewhere Blade would live but I didn't even know the guy that well anyways. That and the fact that he was just an asshole and the only similarity we shared was the mere fact that we didn't like each other.
The door closed and I hurried down the steps of the Collins' home with the key still in my pocket. My feet carried me over to the garden beneath the window where the flower pots were and where the jar that the key had been placed in for safekeeping was hidden.I lifted the lid and dropped the key inside closing it quickly then tucked my hands back into my pockets. I was mindful to keep my head down just in case someone was watching as I walked down the Collins' driveway.A red SUV came cruising down the street. I spotted it as soon as I had finished the length of the driveway and had walked onto the sidewalk. I recognized the SUV immediately without even having to look at the license plate. It was the one I had seen around the parking lot at the floral shop once or twiceand I've also spotted it in and around the neighbourhood bein
"Do you know what time it is?" Helen calls from the ground floor.I scoffed at my ill-fated luck before replying knowing damn well where she was headed with this."I didn't miss curfew did I?"Both Victor and Helen just stared up at me, Helen's stare a bit more aggressive. All I wanted was to take a nap before I passed out and I gave a lazy grin amidst all the tension I knew was brewing and a little salute. I turned stiffly and headed towards my room, and Helen's voice attacked my eardrums again."Where do you think you're going?!"I growled, and continued walking to my room without missing a beat and gave no replies. The door slammed loudly behind me after I walked through and flopp
Victor was standing on the porch with a blanket in hand when I got home. As soon as I stepped onto the porch he threw it over the shoulders of my shivering body. Adam handed me a cup of tea and I didn't know whether to be thankful or to toss it away. The rain had showered down heavily hindering my ability to see clearly through all the hair that was matted to my head and face and the thick curtains of rain. The clothes I had been wearing was soaked down to the very last seam and thread as the water pelted off my body like a waterfall, leaving my shoes soaking as if I had stepped in a giant puddle.Helen, on the other hand, was nowhere to be found, she didn't show up at the welcome home party. Victor whispered something about her being upstairs in their bedroom, not that I cared or that it mattered at all. She wasn't much different from my father, James. Honestly, they were soulmates, bor
My eyes fluttered open and I groaned at the sound of Helen shouting my name and the alarm clock blaring away on the nightstand."Secret!" She yells again. It sounded like a rocket set for launch. The entire neighborhood must have heard and if they didn't then they needed to get their hearing checked."What?" I grumble miserably from under the sheets."Get up! You're going to be late," She demands loudly and I gripped the cover more tightly, leaving painful fingernail dents in my palm.I gave an inaudible response, but when she didn't reply I grumbled again louder telling her to go away."You have two choices," Helen lectures calmy,
He still had the sinister grin and my jaws clenched and unclenched in anger."Are you talking about Blade?" Oswald whispers leaning closer towards me.I hadn't even realized he had heard me muttering under my breath. Blade's eyes were still locked on me, as it was obvious he was not expecting to see me here. His green eyes pierced into mine and my jaw clenched so tightly that my teeth should have crumbled under the pressure."Surprised to see you here Mr. Collins," the teacher announces which was responded by chuckles.Blade gave a sort of smile and ran his fingers through his hair once more to look cooler, enjoying all the attention he was getting from those brainless girls, just like at the park.
Oswald didn't seem to have the slightest idea what he was getting himself into. As it turned out we had the next class together, it was almost like we were destined to become friends. He led the way to third-period Literature in the Literature hall. It was just like all the other classrooms except it had bookshelves containing rows and rows of novels, magazines, encyclopaedias and anything remotely related to literature, almost like a miniature library. The words 'Literature Room' was etched into a plaque on the door which I noticed on my way in. A group of students came strolling in and sat at desks along the sides and the back of the room. My eyes did a sweep of the faces but none of them was from the class I had before this one."Over here," Oswald motioned with his head and I followed him quietly.Curious eyes followed my every move
The remaining hours passed like a literal flash of lightening. After lunch, the first-afternoon session was Physics where I spent the two hours doodling on the note sheets that the teacher had handed out to everyone. I didn't stay around long enough after the final bell went, neither did I spot Oswald whom I had had two classes with within the crowd flocking out of the school. Tailing the crowd heading out to the schools parking lot, I made my way to the Beetle, got in and hit the road.Adam's motorcycle was parked in the driveway when I got home, a clear indicator that the doofus was home. Usually, I would feel a compelling urge to run the thing over... maybe that would stop him from blocking the whole driveway. The imbecile had once again parked sideways in the middle of the driveway just to piss me off so I had no other choice but to park the Beetle as closely to the motorcycle as pos

The doorbell downstairs rang and I heard Helen's voice floating around before the door opened. Blade's voice greeted whoever opened the door and my heart panged nervously in my chest. I looked good, I told myself as I was doing some quick breathing exercises to calm the nervousness. My eyes swept over myself one last time in the mirror.I had let my hair down and it flowed in a mass of curls around my shoulders. The outfit I had chosen for my first date with Blade was an oversized sweater shirt that was opened back and held together with a ribbon, paired with off white lace shorts and platform sneakers. I gathered my cellphone and my purse and headed downstairs to where Blade was waiting. He was sitting on the couch, looking quite uncomfortable between Helen and Victor who seemed to be giving him'the talk'.I would have laughed if I wasn't already feeling so nervous.
My breathing was shallow and my heart hammered loudly in my chest. I allowed my legs to carry me as best as they could at the moment. The principal's voice continued yelling loudly behind us as Blade led the way down a staircase and I followed."C'mon," he urges a little out of breath as he reached the front door and threw it open.He allowed me to take the lead and he followed closely at my heels as our running footsteps echoed off the ground. The silence that had filled the streets before had been disturbed by our sprint to the Mustang plus my loud panting. Blade threw open the car door and I dashed around to the passenger's side and hopped in. He stepped on the gas as I closed the door. The tires screeched loudly before the car sped off. I was wheezing loudly from exhaustion. My heart was hammering in my chest and my body prickled un
"The principal's house?" I snap, a high guttural sound, "how did my cellphone end up at the principal's house you moron!"His lips tightened into a thin line and I was fuming. The only thing keeping me from attacking him was the fact that I'd never get my cellphone back without him."It's a long story sweetling, and if you plan on getting your cellphone back, I suggest we go now and save the interrogation for later," the asshole replies.I glowered at the smirk he was wearing and let out a frustrated hiss."Fine moron... Stay here while I go change," I command."Oh c'mon Tink, there's no need for that," Blade responds immediately, his eyes looking me over searchingly.
"So you're Brad and he's Chad?" I ask for the second time making conversation and sipping on a cup of strong liquor, all while staring up at the twin who had his hand over my shoulder."Yes," he replies smiling at me, "and you're Secret and your friend over there is Phoebe?" He questions."Yeah," I reply with a chuckle.Phoebe was busy conversing with Chad. She was cheery and flirting as only Phoebe would be.Brad spoke but I didn't hear a word of it. My mind was in a different universe and even when it wasn't I was too engrossed by everything happening around us. The music played loudly, and there were endless whoops and cheers."Do you want to dance?" He repeats loude
"I know it's last-minute but can you tell Phoebe there's a party tonight next door?" I plead, following Helen around the kitchen as again she checked her events calendar and was blatantly ignoring me."A party?... Where?" Victor's disembodied voice asks.Five seconds later he walked into the kitchen. His eyebrow furrowed as I followed Helen around with my face screwed up in annoyance."Tonight, next door," I reply pursing my lips and looking from Helen to him.His eyes gleamed when he saw her and I scoffed under my breath and he cleared his throat and looked back at me."Left or right?" He asks."Right."
The evening sun felt great against my skin just thinking how horribly cold the weather had been not long ago."Decided where to go for your first date yet?" I ask Ossey Thursday after school."Hailey likes theme parks, so maybe there, I guess," he replies with his accent more pronounced and thick."Of course take her somewhere she likes," I say with a smile. The sky was a bright blue dotted with white clouds and a ray of magnificent golden sunshine reflecting against it."I almost forgot," I say turning to Ossey, "Emmett is throwing a party and I agreed to go and I thought you'd want to go too.""Emmett? As in the guy you have a cru
An entire day of searching and yet Blade was nowhere to be found. I wouldn't find him unless he wanted to be found. And he didn't. He had disappeared off the face of the earth like a single water droplet on a sunny day. Clearly, he knew some secret passages in and around the school that I didn't know about, otherwise how else would he have managed to disappear? If I hadn't hesitated to chase after him he wouldn't have gotten away or I'd at least seen where he went.I kept wondering if he was lying about not having gone through all the photos. Even if he hadn't, he had still gone through my cellphone and stolen pictures. Now he'd get to satisfy his disgusting fantasies, that he knows what I look like beneath the clothes.I couldn't turn up at his house. I'd be giving the jerk what he wanted. He even hinted at it himself. Offering the key
Hailey and Ossey? I didn't see that one coming at all. The guy's great and deserves a great girlfriend but the thought of him being googly-eyed and romantic was almost laughable. But who am I to judge, I know absolutely nothing about relationships never have and never will.My mind shifted to Blade for a split second and I shuddered and gagged and shook my head to erase that horrifying seconds thought. Almost as if everyone in the hallways had suddenly lifted from a trance loud whispering commenced. Oswald's friends were staring at him in complete awe and he looked lost. Students hurried down the corridor whispering, eager to go spread the news to anyone who hadn't witnessed the PDA of the century. Ossey's friends were teasing him and he scowled, ignored their jeerings and walked in my direction leaving them howling at him.Ossey approa
