The mansion was full of life with preparations. The aroma of food filled the air along with the chatter of the staff. Chimes rang over the conversations, announcing the flow of guests arriving.
Esper was constantly trotting towards the entry and welcoming guests as they entered. Senna and Saffron would then escort the guests to their room to allow them to get settled before dinner. In between guests, Esper would check in with the staff to see how they were progressing. She never knew how overwhelming being the head of a house could be. It made her wonder how her father managed to run a fine-tuned household and a business empire as well. He never ceased to amaze her.
After several long strenuous hours of keeping on top of all the mansion's inner workings, Esper was finally allowed a small break to get ready for dinner. She took a deep breath and readied herself both mentally and physically to face a room of strangers. She got dressed and then headed down towards the dining hall.
As she entered, the young vampire took in a deep breath and let it out slowly in relief to see that she was the first to enter. Esper took her seat at the head of the table and put on a façade of confidence, not showing a single drop of weakness or fear. She was filled with even more confidence when her two best friends entered and sat by her sides. As long as Esper had Senna and Saffron, she could conquer the world.
The rest of the night carried on with ease. Dinner was a great success, and all of the house guests seemed to be pleased with Esper. At the end of the night, she thanked everyone as they went to their rooms. Just as she was about to turn in for the night herself, Esper heard the front door open. Wesley and the group of male vampires had finally returned. Esper ran up and gave her father a warm hug as she welcomed him back home.
"How was the trip?" Esper wanted to hear all about their excursions. She released Wesley from the hug and looped her arm in his.
The tall brunette man chuckled and patted his daughter's head. "It went well. We got your birthday presents for later on this month."
Esper was taken aback with surprise when she saw that all of the men had shopping bags. The young vampire chuckled to herself. Of course, her father would drag them around to go shopping. It was his form of a test to see if they were worthy of his daughter.
"Dad, did you really drag them along all day just to go shopping?" Wesley chuckled at his daughter; she had caught him.
"Only the best for my girl." Wesley patted Esper's shoulder before breaking free from her hold. The aging vampire bid the group a farewell before retiring for the evening. The males quickly followed suit, not wanting Esper to peek inside the bags at her gifts, and bid a goodnight before heading to their rooms.
No longer ready to go to bed, Esper made her way to the kitchen. She had become restless with newfound energy from her father's arrival and needed to find a release. Baking always helped her destress. The house staff thought her obsession with food to be strange for a vampire until they saw her creativity of incorporating blood into the recipes. It was a talent everyone learned to appreciate very quickly.
Getting to work, Esper pulled on an apron and began gathering ingredients and utensils. Humming to herself, Esper combined the components into three bowls. One had a white mixture, the next had red, and the final bowl was purple. Happy with the consistency, the vampire poured each bowl's contents into a dome mold and placed the container in the blast chiller.
Next, Esper placed a double boiler on the stove and melted white chocolate down with condensed milk and added gelatin to make a mirror glaze. As she was stirring the liquid, the vampire heard the door creak open. Esper turned to see the caramel-haired vampire, Lucca, walking in. He stood at the entrance nervously in his pajamas. He hadn't been expecting anyone else to be up still.
"Sorry, I was just coming for a snack. I couldn't sleep." Lucca looked down as he nervously stammered.
Esper flashed a friendly smile at the male vampire as she pulled the glaze off the heat. "Well, you are just in time."
Setting the pot on the marble counter, Esper pulled out the chilled mold. She popped the contents onto a cake stand and poured the glistening glaze on top of the dome-shaped dessert, then finished off the cake with a light dusting of edible galaxy glitter. Esper let the cake sit for a moment before slicing into it. She carefully lifted each slice and placed them onto two plates.
"This is a Trollkrem cake. It is lingonberry, blood, and vanilla mousse. Bon Appetit." Esper passed Lucca one of the plates and watched as he dug in. Lucca's eyes lit up as the velvety dessert melted on his tongue.
"This is amazing. I thought I was the only one who enjoyed food." Lucca took another bite, savoring the decadent dessert.
"I want to open up my own patisserie, but my parents always called my passion an obsession. They hoped one day I would give it up." His bright copper eyes dimmed as Lucca recalled his parents' disappointment. Esper reached over gently grasped his arm.
"They don't know what they are missing." Esper gave him a reassuring smile along with a gentle squeeze on his arm. Lucca returned her smile with a small one of his own.
"Now, if you don't hurry up and eat that, I'm going to finish this cake all by myself." Esper chuckled as she cut herself a second slice of the Trollkrem.
Lucca greedily gobbled down his piece and held his plate out for a second one. The two vampires slowly demolished the cake and talked about their favorite foods. Both of them were so happy to have finally found someone else who shared their passion.
"You know, Lucca, I think the two of us will be great friends." Esper gave the golden-eyed boy a smile as she cleaned up their snack. Lucca stood up to help and gave the silver-haired vampire a bright smile of his own. He liked the sound of them being friends. He never had a close friend before.
Once they were all cleaned up, Esper took hold of Lucca's arm. "Come on. I want to show you something."
Esper pulled him out of the kitchen and to the elevator. Esper clicked B1, and they descended. The metal doors opened to a short dark hallway with large double doors at the end. Esper continued to lead the way and stopped as they reached the doors.
"Ok, now close your eyes." With Lucca's eyes closed, Esper placed her hands over his eyes to be extra sure and led him in the doors. They walked a few more steps, and Esper removed her hands. Lucca looked around and gasped. They were in an underground tunnel with a jellyfish aquarium wrapping around it.
"Is that an Atolla jellyfish?" Lucca exclaimed as he ran towards one of the walls pointing at a blue jellyfish with a golden ring. Esper smiled and nodded. It was nice finding out they had more in common.
"I like to come here when I need to re-center myself. It's a safe place." Esper walked over to the panel and turned down the lights to let the jellyfish's bioluminescence be more prominent. She then pulled over a bench and patted down for him to sit.
"Now, we both know why I was up late. Is there something on your mind?" Esper sat and smiled, waiting for Lucca to join her. The male sat down and hung his head low. Was he that easy to read? He ran his hands through his curls and then let out a sigh.
"I just feel kind of lost. My coming here was my parents' idea. I know I should be trying to win your heart, but I would be much happier just being friends. This all just feels a little wrong. Not that you are bad or anything! You are beautiful. I just..." Lucca trailed off.
Esper looked at the distraught male and pulled him into a hug. She wasn't sure what else to do, but hugs always made her feel better. Lucca held onto her tightly, burying his face into Esper's shoulder. Her smell and touch were calming.
Feeling the male relax, Esper rubbed Lucca's back and hummed Judy Collins' Gaelic Lullaby. The humming continued for several minutes until Esper heard soft snoring. She smiled, knowing Lucca had finally fallen asleep. Esper gently picked up the male, surprised that he was much lighter than he looked. She carefully carried him up to his room and was surprised that it was heavily decorated in pinks. There were many complex layers to the man she considered her friend. Esper pulled back his blankets and slowly laid him down. She tucked him in snug and placed one of Lucca's teddy bears in his arms. The male vampire gripped onto the stuffed animal and nuzzled into the blankets instinctively. Esper smiled and tiptoed her way out of Lucca's room, heading towards her own.
Esper paused in the hallway when she saw her father's study light still on. She approached the door and gently knocked before coming in. Just as she thought, Wesley was still up and working.
"You deserve a rest every now and then too, Dad." Wesley looked up at the sound of his daughter's voice and smiled. "You are one to talk. What are you still doing up so late?"
"I got a second burst of energy," Esper said with a shrug.
"Then how about we both go to bed." Wesley set his pen down and stood up to walk towards his daughter. He planted a kiss on the top of her head and tousled her hair. "That means no staying up late to read more of your history books."
"I promise to only read ten pages." That was a blatant lie. Esper could read about vampire history for hours.
"Five pages," Wesley bartered. "And I will be sure to check in on you in an hour to make sure you are asleep."
"Dad, I am an adult. I can manage my own sleep schedule," Esper tried to argue.
"Yes, but you will always be my daughter, so I can manage all I want." Wesley gave his daughter a gentle nudge down the hall.
"Alright, fine," Esper said with a smile. "Good night, Dad."
"Good night, Sweetheart."
The ballroom doors were wide open, displaying the flurry of life inside. Esper had never seen the house this alive. There was dancing, chatter, and laughter; everyone seemed happy. The smiling faces gave her the confidence to face the crowd. Lucca gave Esper's hand a small uneasy squeeze as they entered. Feeling the squeeze, Esper returned the squeeze, providing the nervous male with some comfort. Once the two vampires reached the dancefloor's center, Lucca bowed low. "Will you allow me to have your first dance?" "I would love to," Esper replied as she took his hand once more. Lucca pulled Esper close and led her in a slow waltz across the dancefloor. He stepped on her feet a couple times, apologizing profusely with each occurrence, but he eventually found his rhythm. They swayed along with the music, having a g
Wanting to reach the sanctuary of her room before the panic attack hit, Esper raced out of the ballroom. She heard Maxim call out, but she didn't turn back. It was embarrassing for Esper to not make it through one conversation about her mother without crying. She didn't want Maxim to see her fall apart. Once she was in her room's safety, Esper immediately stripped out of her dress and threw it aside. She curled up in her bed as she tried to fight back the tears. All Esper wanted was for the night to end. A gentle knock sounded at the door, but Esper chose to ignore it. She didn't want anyone to see her in this state. The person knocked again; this time, more concerned. "Hun, can I come in," Saffron called out. Esper stayed silent. The brunette vampire sighed and opened the door anyway. "I am not leaving you alone in here to cry through the day."
Feeling multiple elbows in her sides, Esper grumbled as she woke up. Along with Lucca, she and her friends had stayed up well into the daylight hours watching Disney movies and fell asleep crowded on the couch at some point. Esper pried herself from cuddle puddle and stood up from the couch. While rubbing out some of the knots in her neck, she looked down at her companions. Lucca was missing. He probably felt uncomfortable sleeping in the same room with a bunch of girls. She passed his missing presence with a shrug. "Alright, sleeping beauties, time to wake up." Esper reached down and shook her friends. Saffron and Senna let out large yawns like they had just experienced the best sleep in existence. "You guys might want to hurry it up, it's already dark out." The silver-haired vampire pointed out the window for emphasis.
The trio made their way to the blood lounge. When they entered, the remaining young adult vampires were lounging about and chatting. "Saffron, Senna," Esper announced. "It's time for Code Rose." Saffron immediately jumped up and squealed, her curly chocolate locks bouncing with excitement. It filled her with joy that Esper was following through with the recommendation. The ecstatic female immediately took command. "Esper, you are in charge of setting up the theater. Senna, you are in charge of getting the tissues, blankets, and pillows. I am going to go get the snacks." Saffron started running towards the door but then stopped and turned around. "Y'all might want to get into some comfortable clothes and maybe something for notes. You are all in for a long night." With that, Saffron ran out. The rest of the group followed suit and started their designated tasks. After returning
Esper tried to toss and turn as her body began to overheat, but something was holding her down. She struggled again and started opening her eyes. Her sleep fogged mind started clearing, and she realized that it wasn't the blanket holding her down. It was 2 heavy masses. Blinking the fog away, Esper looked down at an arm lying across her chest. Her eyes followed the arm up and saw it belonged to Maxim. He shifted around and pulled her closer into his chest. His movements caused a chain reaction of someone tightening around her waist. Esper raised her head as high as she could, and her eyes widened when she saw Seraph resting his head on her stomach and his arms wrapped around her waist and hips. The vampire plopped her head back onto the bean bag lounger and chewed her lip. How did this happen?! When did I fall asleep, and why didn't anyone wake me up!
The glow of sunset leaked through the blackout curtains into Esper's room. The female stretched as she awoke, slowly untangling herself from her bedding. Last night she remembered to make it to her own room before falling asleep. Esper did not want to make a habit of falling asleep with her suitors before she made her final decision. The first item on her agenda was a bath. Esper stood up from her bed and sleepily walked into her bathroom, turning on her large three-person tub. She rummaged through her drawers, pulling out a box of various soaps. The vampiress set it on the ledge of the bath and picked out a citrus-scented bath bomb. She gently placed it in the water, mesmerized by the multi-colored suds. While the tub continued to fill, the young vampire returned to her room. She wanted to read while indulging in a long bath. A large book was resting on her nightstand from the previous
The sounds of soft cries stirred Esper from her sleep. She groggily opened her eyes and saw little Max standing at the side of the bed, rubbing at his eyes. “Oh, Max.” As Esper sat up, she wrapped the sheet around her torso like a makeshift dress then pulled the boy onto her lap. “How about you tell Mama what’s wrong?” “I had a bad dream.” Maxim hugged onto his mother tight as his small body shook. “I dreamt I was big and hurt you. I don’t want to hurt you, Mama.” “Oh, Sweetie.” Esper caressed Maxim’s raven locks and kissed the top of his head. “I’m sorry you had a bad dream.” Seeing the small boy distressed broke Esper’s heart. She knew the cause of his nightmare. Maxim was suffering from memory echoes, a common a
"You want to what?" Wesley was fuming. He couldn't wrap his head around what could possibly drive his daughter to take care of a person who had caused her so much pain, regardless of if they were a child now or not. "That is not a child. That is a monster who did unspeakable things to you." "Max is not a monster. He needs someone to teach him what real love is." Esper was not backing down. "Yggdrasil was able to see a spark of good in Max and gave him a second chance. Why can't you?" Seraph stood and stifled his laughter as he watched the father and daughter go back and forth. Even Esper wasn't actually his daughter; she still wanted his blessing and approval. Not understanding the heated argument, Maxim ran over to Esper and hugged her leg. He looked up at Wesley and stuck out his lip, making as stern a face as he could. "Don't yell at Mama!" Wesley paused from the toddler's words and looked down at him, then back up at Esper. He could already see the bond between mother and s
A warm breeze stirred up the grass around Seraph and Esper as they sat in the garden of ruins, enjoying the sun. They were propped up against one of the stone columns with Esper between Seraph's legs and her head resting on his chest. "So, you remember everything now?" Seraph laced his fingers with Esper's and brought them up to his mouth to kiss them. "Kind of." Esper shifted a bit to look up at her mate. "The memories are extremely vibrant and can be a little overwhelming when I try to recall too much, but I think it's all there." "Well, don't try too hard." Seraph tilted his head down and kissed the top of Esper's head. "You've been through a lot." "So, have you." Esper reached up with her free hand and ran her fingers through Seraph's black hair. "I can't arg
Lucien’s maniacal laughter echoed throughout the grand chamber of the World Tree cloister. He was standing atop a pile of spriggan corpses, yanking on their limbs and breaking them as if they were twigs. “Are you having fun yet, Yggdrasil?” Lucien hopped off of the pile and walked over to the World Tree. He bent over and knocked on the trunk. “If you don’t send out another one of your little tree witches to entertain my new powers, I’m going to start burning your real body here. I wonder how long it will take the flames to reach your heart?” “Is that how you treat your creator?” The female’s voice set Lucien off. He turned around to see Esper pushing herself up off the ground. How was she still alive and moving? Even with a vampire’s healing abilities, the woman’s broken back would
"SERAPH!" Esper let out a blood-curdling scream as she watched her mate crumple to the ground. Becoming overwhelmed with a blinding rage, Esper pushed herself off the ground. Her breathing was erratic, and her body shook with uncontrollable anger. Lucien had just killed her mate, and she was going to make him pay. In a mad flurry, she charged at Lucien. The white-haired male smirked and back-handed her as if Esper was nothing but a fly, sending her tumbling across the ground. She stood up on shaky legs and let out a frustrated roar before rushing him again. Much to Lucien's amusement, Esper came at him head-on. He was almost within her grasp when Lucien kicked her in the ribs. His leg collided into her side with a tremendous force and sent her flying through the air. Her body crashed into one of the murals, the painted stone crumbling around her. &nbs
"Seraph?" Esper looked at the weeping wound with horror. Without so much as a wince, Seraph reached back and ripped the sword out of his back. A menacing look formed on his face as he turned around slowly and tucked Esper behind him. Standing before Seraph was Maxim's pack of mutant werewolves. "If you are going to stab me, then do yourself a favor and try to kill me." Seraph rolled his healing shoulder and took a few practice swings with the sword before chopping off the assailant's head. He then sneered at the rest of the pack. "Didn't your master teach you that wounded animals are far more dangerous than the hunter?" The remaining beasts snarled furiously at the man and came charging towards him. Taking a protective stance, Seraph guarded Esper against the werewolves. He wasn't going to let anyone take her away ever again—espec
Esper's breath was heavy and panicked as she ran through the dark woods. She paused momentarily to gain her bearings but started running once more when she heard Maxim's laughter echo throughout the forest. Esper needed to get as far away as possible. She would not be caught by him again. The vine-covered hideaway was within her eyesight when Esper felt someone tackle her to the ground. The attacker flipped her around, and she was forced to face Maxim. "I finally found you, Kitten." The crazed glow ran rampant in Maxim's eyes as his gaze bored into Esper. "And now I'm coming for you." Maxim bared his fangs and bit down on to Esper's shoulder. Esper awoke with a scream. She ripped away the bedding and frantically ran down the breezeway towards Seraph's bed chambers. Her cries echoed througho
"Are you sure you are going to be okay while I'm gone?" Ronnie walked out of her closet with an armful of clothes and tossed them on the bed. "Ronnie, for the thousandth time, yes." Esper was sitting on the bed, folding her cousin's clothes and placing them in suitcases. "I don't want you worrying about me while you are on this trip. Just focus on having fun. I am going to be just fine." "I don't like the idea of leaving you here with him alone." Ronnie sat on the bed across from Esper and took up some of the clothes to help fold. "It won't be just Seraph and I. Dad will still be here," Esper offered. "Well, I still don't like it." Ronnie crossed her arms over her chest and stuck her lower lip out as she pouted. Esper couldn't help but laugh at her cousin's display. Ronnie had spen
Esper felt something nudging at her shoulder. Not quite ready to wake, she slapped at the annoyance. Her hand was met by a solid thud and thick fur. She opened her eyes and was met by the crystal blue stare of the stag. The animal was clearly not amused with Esper and huffed in her face. “I’m so sorry, boy. I forgot that I fell asleep out here.” Esper pet the stag’s forehead. She looked up at the sky and saw the moon was still out. Even if it had only been for an hour or two, Esper felt well rested after the nap. “Think you can help me find my way back?” The stag nodded in response to Esper’s request. Pushing herself up from the ground, Esper stood and let out a stretch. She was about to walk out the door, but something tugged at her sleeve. The young woman turned around and saw the stag kneeling before her
