"It's a castle! It's a freaking castle!" Cora Windsor murmured as she dragged her luggage in front of the towering castle gate. It was a long walk into the castle itself.
She grimaced as she looked at the long lonely walk ridden with gargoyles and angel sculptures.
All around her, students carrying luggage, some in cars and some laughing loudly were walking towards Avalon Academy for Werewolves.
Avalon Academy was a large Castle with extensive school grounds surrounding it, which included sloping lawns, flowerbeds, vegetable patches, a large dense forest, several greenhouses and other outbuildings, and a full sized pitch.
One of the castle's towers held containment rooms, where werewolves in training who couldn't control themselves on the full moon were locked in.
The castle was set upon huge rocks above a magnificent lake, better known as the Moon lake. The castle had been around for centuries, and consequently had a long history of ancient magic surrounding it even though it was a werewolf academy.
With a sigh, Cora started the long walk into the castle gates.
Her parents had not given her much instructions or help, they just dropped her off and left her to figure everything out herself. Even if she was going to leave the Academy, she had no way of going back to the new pack house they called home.
Cora didn't want to admit that she was lost, but she was definitely lost, she had tried stopping one or two people for help but most of them had looked at her weirdly and growled at her. It must be her lack of distinct wolf scent. That was what was missing.
Her mother warned her that it was going to happen.
Cora Windsor had lived in the human world for sixteen years. She had lived as a human and for a long time, she believed she was human. She did human things, had human friends and boyfriends. When her father had uprooted her whole life and decided it was time for her to go back home to Avalon, she had been devastated.
How would she cope? How would she survive? Her wolf side had been repressed a long time ago after a traumatic experience at the age of one. She thought that being in Avalon would rekindle that but so far, nothing had happened. Her wolf was still dormant.
"You must be Cora." A woman with a shock of bright red hair asked as she helped her with her luggage with effortless ease. Super strength was one quality she was also lacking. The woman was short and wore dark clothes.
"Wow! Thanks. Yea. Cora Windsor."
"Is it always so rowdy here?"
The woman shook her head.
"I'm Sydney. And no, it's never like this, only at the beginning of school year. The year three students are particularly loud and boisterous after making their first shift."
Cora felt a little embarrassed that she was almost seventeen yet she had not shifted yet. She looked around and found students of her age walking around with brazen happiness and confidence. Most of them must have made their first shift. Unlike her.
"Ugh! Do you smell it?" Sydney asked as they turned into a less busier hallway.
"Smell what?"
"It's the smell of sweat and raging hormones. It's always particularly high for the mated ones. No wonder they all say year three is one of the hardest years."
Cora didn't say a word, she would be lying if she said she understood a word of the nonsense the woman was saying. The only thought in her mind was why her iPhone wouldn't work in Avalon. Even though her mother had explained that the magic keeping Avalon safe and out of reach of the human world messed with the technology of the human world, she still found it hard to believe.
So, against her mother's warnings, she had packed a bunch of phones, laptops, iPods and headphones. They all turned out to be pretty useless.
Her iPhone died the very minute they crossed the veil. At least she was lucky the guardians didn't confiscate it. Certain human technology was not allowed in Avalon.
"Now! You run along to the Great Hall, I'll send someone later to pick you up from this spot. Principal Claude has to make his address."
Cora did as she was told, walking into the great Hall adjacent to a row of offices with a hundred or more students in it.
Cora looked all around her in amusement, suddenly feeling self conscious that almost everyone else was in uniform.
The great hall was larger than any other hall she had ever been in. It was old and musty and ancient and comfortably housed over a hundred students in it. It had ancient murals on every side of the walls that told the story of the werewolf history.
The ceiling was a large dome of ancient drawings and glittering magical stars. It was magic. Magic kept it alive. The whole academy was spun from magic, from the very first Lycan mages.
A chandelier hung from the ceiling like the bejewelled corpse of a giant spider. It was old, grim and haunting to Cora.
Cora looked around and found that most of the people around her were looking at her strangely, till one girl had the courage to growl at them and they all turned away.
"Thanks." Cora murmured amidst the noise of the students in the great hall.
"They're worried by your lack of smell. Pay no attention to them."
"Thank you. I'm Cora Windsor."
"Mabel Devine. Ortus Solis pack." She said proudly as she shook her hands.
Cora couldn't remember much of her werewolf history, but Ortus Solis was the leading pack in terms of government.
"Cora Windsor. Filli Luna."
Mabel watched Cora weirdly.
"How is it you have no distinctive scent? You smell like a human."
Cora opened her mouth to explain but was cut short by a loud horn which had all the students groaning and whining.
"What's going on?" She asked in confusion.
Mabel shrugged.
"Principal Claude and his stupid speech. We do this every year, it's a complete waste of time." Mabel growled as she examined her nails.
Oh she desperately needed a manicure, Cora thought as she looked at her perfect nails that had been painted in a pretty shell pink colour.
She had taken extra effort to look extra good. Her hair was as fresh from the salon as it could be and there were golden highlights in her blonde wavy hair. She had worn one of her best outfits, a pretty short shimmering yellow dress that barely reached her knees and she had quickly regretted it, the steps here were higher. Not to mention the utter lack of attention she was getting from her revealing clothes. Fashion seemed to be a few years backward in Avalon.
In her former school, Cora had been the most popular girl to grace her school, here in werewolf academy, nobody gave her a single look of admiration. Only weird looks and crazy snarls.
Well, she hoped that would changed soon.
"Students of Avalon High. We welcome you all back to the new school year."
The Principal wasn't even done talking when the students started cheering loudly. Their voices loud and boisterous.
The horn sounded again and they all groaned and whined again. Cora felt a mild discomfort in her ears. There must be something in the horn.
"What's with the horn?" She asked Mabel who shrugged.
"It's some stupid mage invention that keeps wolves in order. I know it sounds like a normal horn but to werewolves it sounds loud and screeching, like the sound of a banshee scream."
She didn't hear it. Cora didn't hear anything. She shifted uncomfortably as she wondered how the hell she was ever going to fit in the school if she couldn't get her werewolf side to be reactivated.
"Now now. I know most of you third year students are happy after experiencing your first shift, but do know that blatant disregard for the rules would lead to severe punishment! You all must comply with the rules laid down or face the consequences regardless of whoever you are."
Cora noticed the Principal's eyes went to a particular individual when he said that.
"Is he referring to someone?"
She asked and Mabel nodded in amusement.
"Yes, he is. Alpha Superior Noah. The youngest Alpha in Avalon history."
"Isn't he sixteen or something? Why is he an Alpha. What pack?" Cora asked and Mabel shrugged.
"His father has been battling with madness for years, he finally passed the mantle of leadership to his firstborn son. It's the Lux Aeterna pack."
Lux Aeterna, Filli lunae, Ortus Solis etc they all sounded the same to Cora. Maybe she shouldn't have refused all those werewolf history lesson her mother was so keen on teaching her in the human world.
After a few more words from the Principal Claude who seemed more interested in warning the students about the punishments available for them if they broke the school rules, he finally told them to leave.
Cora was leaving when she caught a glimpse of Alpha Superior Noah.
"That's him!"
Mabel said with glee as she pointed at him.
He looked young, Cora thought. Young and unbelievably hotter than any man she had ever seen.
There was only one word to describe the sun-kissed Alpha. Perfection. Where his eyes were the green of fresh dew glinting in the sunlight off a leaf of green emerald. His lips were pale and full and his nose slender and rounded. A prominent jaw curved gracefully around and the strength of his neck showed in the twining cords of muscle that shaped his entire body; strong arms, bold thighs and calves, a firm chest and abdomen. He was a god among the other men who each paled in comparison. One look and all the students swooned at the sight of him no matter their sexual preferences and one word passed from his lips that could even have the straightest of men flushing shades of red that no one ever knew was naturally possible.
Alpha.
He passed by Cora without a second glance and she blinked furiously out of surprise.
Did he just pass by without noticing her? She thought as she looked around. She found Mabel watching her strangely.
"Is he taken?" She asked.
Mabel busted into uncontrollable laughter.
"If you mean has he found his mate, not yet."
"Ohh. I can work with that." Cora murmured as she watched the retreating figure of the Alpha.
"I gotta go. I'll see you around maybe." Mabel said as she waved at Cora.
Cora decided to move back to the spot where she was to see Sydney again.
Was it here or here?
She asked herself as she struggled to identify the hallway.
"Ms Windsor." A loud booming voice called out.
Cora jerked back in surprise.
It was non other than the Principal who had spoke earlier.
"Hello."
She greeted with a slight wave.
Sydney was standing next to the Principal.
"Welcome to Avalon Academy Ms Windsor, would you like a tour?"
Principal Claude's face was anything but inviting as he looked at the girl.
His wolf sniffed around her but found nothing. How was it possible that there was zero indication that she was a werewolf? He asked himself. He would have doubted her werewolf heritage if he didn't know her parents.
He sent a quick glance at his assistant Sydney. Sydney was right, the girl smelled human.
Whatever happened to her wolf must be the result of a powerful mage. One whose actions might be irreversible.
As a little boy, no one except Everett's mother had thought him handsome as a baby. Their gaze had halted when they got to his roman nose and their smile had faltered for a fraction of a second. As a boy he didn't attract the girls. The girls had been more attracted to the boys who were big and strong. It was the signs of strong werewolf genes. He was skinny and his cheek bones just gave him a skeletal look. But by fourteen he was filling out, he had muscles from rigorous trainings and pack patrol with the adult werewolves.By seventeen he became handsome. He had grown into those features, his bone structure was fine and perfectly symmetrical. It was manly. But Everett's new shape didn't do much for him, not when his status couldn't rise past that of an ordinary wolf.Sometimes Everett wondered if he w
Cora Windsor did not like the look the boy the principal claimed was her personal guide was giving her. It was an intense look and it made her very uncomfortable. So uncomfortable that her stomach felt sick. The Principal and Sydney left both of them after brief introductions."So, Everett... Nice to meet you." Cora said as she stretched her hand to give him a polite handshake. Her jumped up in surprise and moved away from her hand. What a weirdo.Cora thought as he watched him with amusement."Well, handshakes must not be your thing. Are you a germophobe or what?" She asked as she la
Cora quickly scrambled to her feet. Struggling to maintain her former position. Noah was staring at her with an intense look that would make any girl swoon.Noah was tall, even though Cora was at least 5'10, he seemed to be over 6 feets. And he towered over her in a way that made Cora self conscious."Cora Windsor." She said as she extended a hand to him acting coyly.Noah was looking at her suspiciously as he took her hand in his and shook it. His hands were about two times larger than hers. And he was so warm it was weird."My name is Noah. Just Noah."He said.He didn't mention his Alpha Superior title like she expected him to
"What is this place called again?"Cora asked as she settled herself into one of the old stone benches that seemed to be carved out of the ground. The entire area was filled with stone sculptures as centrepieces and stone benches. It was eery and at the same time creative."It's called the Quadrangle. A lot of students come here to relax." Everett replied as he sat across Cora. She seemed unnerved and oblivious about every single thing that was happening around her. She was free."You brought me here to teach me the basics so I'm listening, what do I need to know about this place?""First, I have to ask. How much do you know about Avalonian history?"
Cora couldn't help but remember how Everett's touch had made her feel, like she was instantly comforted by his touch. Their conversation had ended abruptly after that, with him murmuring a string of excuses that had him practically running away from her.She found it weird but she didn't dwell on it. She had gone back to her dorm room after getting lost in the twist and turns and various hallways and stairways in the castle. But she had found her room and did some more arranging. She had slept all through dinner and woke up the next morning startled by the loud alarm bells.Zombie like she had got out of bed and hit the showers with about twenty other girls in the hallway who seemed to be unnerved about the fact that they were all taking showers
The Quadrangle was nearly empty, because it was still school hours and Cora had skipped class. The bright sun was relentless in it's shine and the harsh rays tempted Cora to leave the Quadrangle but there was no where else for her to go so she stayed put. She knew it wasn't good for her school records skipping class, but what good were Defence classes when she couldn't even connect to her wolf. She couldn't go to her dorm because that would be much worse, a matron might see her and punish her for violating the rules and Cora didn't want to draw too much attention to herself. The past two weeks had gone in a blur, she was struggling with her classes, friends she found hard to make and Everett kept her on her toes with his persistent lessons that have yielded little results. At least she knew about her Avalonian history now, but it wasn't the main thing she was bothered about. Cora was lonely. And tired and most importan
The death of an Alpha meant a severance in connection from the members of the pack and the Alpha. Sometimes, most of the people who were close to the Alpha could feel the bond snapping, like a physical bone in their body was being broken. The Luna felt it most and sometimes in the battlefield, if the Alpha fell, the Luna did too, because of the intensity of the pain.Even though Alpha Superior Henry and Luther had no Luna, the pain of their loss was a physical living thing that could be felt all around the pack house as Cora walked through it. It could be seen in their faces and in the sombre mood the air carried, it could even be felt in their voices and their damp eyes. When she and Noah had rushed back to school, Principal Claude was already waiting for her, with two werewolves from her pack waiting to collect her and Everett. The Principal had insisted that
Each and every Alpha was unique and different.Alpha Augustus of the Sole pack led the procession, even though he was the second oldest Alpha in Avalon, he clearly showed little signs of aging. It was rumoured that he had lived for a century and a half. Although the hair on his head was a startling silver white, his sun kissed skin was still smooth and glistening with aged youth. He also wore white pants with no shirt at all, leaving the muscles of his back completely inked in tattoos.Noah followed closely behind and Cora couldn't help but notice how he stuck out like a sore thumb in the gathering of Alphas. Even though he kept a brave face, Cora knew that he must have been nervous.Alpha Abraham of the Custodes Lunae followed closely with his head bowed lo
Cora knew they were in trouble the minute they reached Avalon. And not just any trouble, big trouble. Her father mind linked her immediately she was in the vicinity and he seemed angry and worried altogether. She was even more worried about Viola, who it seemed her father had figured out that she wasn't in Avalon, with Noah, who wasn't exactly the best person at the moment for her to be spending her time with. "We're in big trouble." She whispered to Everett as they neared the school and he turned to look at her. She quickly mind linked him telling him what her father had said and he glanced at Noah and Viola who were laughing together. "Shit!" He said out loud and Noah stopped to turn and look at them. "Everything alright?" He asked and Cora shook her head. "Not exactly. They know we're missing in school." Viola's eyes widen with fear and dread. "Wait! Who knows? Does my Dad know?" She asked with dread in her voice and Cora nodded slowly. "Yes, I'm sorry but he knows.
The Alpha convention like all things came and went. The entire saga had gone fairly okay. All the nightmares that Viola had about it did not come to past. Even though, the Alpha convention left a difficult choice for Viola – ‘Compete in the Alpha trials or marry Sylvester.’ It was something in the future and a lesson from dreading the convention so much was to not let the future steal the joy of the present because it was truly unpredictable. Now was the only thing to focus on and Viola only focused on now. She returned to school as quickly as she was allowed. She had come to love Avalon high, not the classes or its ever-looking students but the freedom. Freedom to do more or less. Before, when Viola was just Viola Hawkins school was an escape and now it still was. Here, she had Cora, Everett and Noah. Noah and her had become even closer. It was like they suddenly realised how quickly things can change and decided to use the time they had for as much as they could together. It bega
Viola had begun home training with Malachi. He was a really quiet man, comfortable with not talking. Viola had heard that he was one of the best fight strategists in the pack and in Avalon in general. He fought like he was two or three Lycan, one attack always built up to several others. When his blows connected it was like he had extra limbs but in truth he had just planned his actions in advance. He was also the best in terms of hand to hand combat. Most lycans would need to shift to fight better, but Malachi never needed to shift. He always trained her in his human form. Always. “Today, Viola the objective is to fight without your wolf.” He said. Her wolf had greatly exceeded his expectations and it was far more superior than it should have been for an halfbreed. “Hand to hand combat. There are situations where we cannot change into our wolf so it is important to be able to be excellent at fighting without the wolf.” Malachi said and Viola nodded. “The first thing I want you to
The Alpha convention had finally arrived after so much preparations. It was arguably the biggest event in the calendar of Avalon. It was a first for Viola, a beginning in Viola’s full-time journey as a lycan in Ortus Solis. It was astonishing that in a matter of months Viola had gone from an invisible halfbreed in Avalon Academy to being one of the highlights of the show. To make an appearance and join the most powerful and elite circle of Avalon. Itwas important to Eli. A successful introduction would make Viola’s presence at the Alpha trials more likely especially if acted like she belonged. Viola remembered her sister, Freya’s words to her. You have to remember ‘you are a part of the family’. Viola also remembered her father’s warning and his advice that she should correct her mistakes so he wouldn't have to. Thinking about the night made Viola anxious. A million things could go wrong and it would all be her fault. As if Noah could read her mind, he mindlinked her. “Hey, I ca
Viola’s father had asked her to come to his private training arena. He wanted to examine her himself, see what they had taught her in school. And most importantly, he wanted to know how powerful she was.If she was strong enough, fast enough to even stand a chance in the Alpha trials. This idea of examining her made Viola nervous all through the night. She even had a nightmare which made her even more nervous. She didn't know what to expect but she knew it would be difficult. The morning could not come soon enough as the anticipation of the examination was actually more terrifying than the examination."Thank goodness. It’s time to get it over with." Viola found consolation in the fact that the day had broken, Lillian still complained on some of her forms."You'll do good. You're strong and fast. Don't worry about it."Lilian patted her back as she esc
Viola had started to get Avalon. She no longer got confused about where her classes were or got lost in them. She had figured out her own little routine and it worked for her. She woke up at 5:30 am to have some time off, to take a run or a walk or to shift to her werewolf form. She did it to introspect alone and enjoy the cool breeze. It was really vital to her rapid adjustment and it helped her get more in tune with her wolf. At 6:30am she would return to her room and start to prepare for classes. She would go through her classes and what they would learn. It had helped a lot because the classes no longer seemed to be taught in some hidden ancient language, she started to understand her classes better. At 7:30am Noah would knock on her door and they would go get breakfast at the hall together. Sometimes, they saw Cora and Everett. After that, she attended her classes and practised with her dux, Lillian. The work part of her day usually ended when she was done with Lillian and ev
The past few days had been quite blissful for Viola. And only one person was responsible – Noah. Noah and Viola had been spending their free time every day with each other. Between them, things had been great. Noah looked forward to even more time between them, without classes, without Lillian, the dux and without any Alpha talk. They both deserved the peace he thought to himself as he researched the destination that would be most suitable. The place would have to be peaceful above all with as little intervention from their routine lives. Luckily for him, he knew a pair of mates, Everett and Cora. Being the third wheel in their friendship had come with its benefits after all. Even though he had been frustrated by it back then. He knew the perfect spot. It was a couple’s resort in Avalon that Cora gushed about for weeks after they went. And as much as Everett tried to play it down as a causal outing, Everett was really glad he made her so happy. The retreat was called Magarita, fo
Each pack had their pack house, a communal property in which all members of a pack were welcomed. The pack houses varied in design, beauty and size. In the earlier eras, it was more about functionality of the pack houses with focus on pragmaticism. It was typical to have a large, round bunch of rocks as some pack houses but the Ortus Solis pack house was truly an architectural masterpiece. The pack house was the biggest one, but it did not compromise on style. The house had over 150 rooms, each uniquely designed. The floors made of marbles, and thanks to Rosalina who managed the house neatly. Pack members could see reflections of themselves looking at the floor. In the Alpha room, Alpha superior Eli sat. He was thinking about the incoming Alpha Convention. Alpha Superior Eli was a handsome man, his skin showed little wear and tear but beneath it all. He was almost as handsome as he was in his younger days. Even with his slowed aging due to his strong
Viola’s dux was Lillian, a fifth-year student of Avalon Academy. She didn’t seem to have much personality and seemed to have mastered the act of sneaking up on people. Viola had to guess it was due to her invisible aura, Lilian was so stealthy she could have been standing next to Viola for seconds and Viola wouldn't know. Lillian also barely spoke, and every time she spoke it was only because it was necessary. She had brown short hair that covered her eyes and dark brown skin. She was tall and lanky, way taller than Viola ever imagined a girl would be. But her stature wasn't so frightening since she looked frail all the time.“Viola. You are not concentrating hard enough.” She said gently. It was Viola’s first training session with her d
