The Scrubbing of Essence

Michelangelo ran inside the bathroom and caught Renata’s hands. She was on the verge of hurting her skin. Her skin was red yet she kept scrubbing.

“Stop! Stop!” cried Michelangelo.

“No! get out! Leave me be,” sobbed Renata.

“Ren! Ren!” He pulled her arms and made her look at him. “Stop! You are hurting yourself.”

“Why do you care?” shouted Renata.

“Why do I care? Why do I care?? As if you don’t know. You are the love of my life,” shouted Michelangelo.

“Ha-ha,” Renata started laughing manically. “Love! And you? You are incapable of love. You cannot love anyone. If you would have loved me, you never would have sent me with him. Now, LET ME GO!”

“I didn’t know what he would do,” said Michelangelo.

“You are part of the family. Surely you would know what kind of person he was. Why did you send me alone with him?” she cried while shouting at him.

“I am sorry, I am sorry I was not there to protect you. Hit me, kick me, take out your anger on me but stop hurting yourself,” said Michel
