I tilted my head to the side. “No magic energy? Why have a witch then? What’s the curse?”

“I will show you.” He pressed his hands against the table and pushed himself up and walked over to a glass case I didn’t notice. Inside there was a book, spread open to a certain page with blood smeared across of it. He opened the latch and slide the glass open, he carefully lifted the generational old book and brought it over to me. Sitting it down with such care. “This is her spell book, my ancestor stole it from her.”

My eyes widened. Stealing a witch’s spell book was the same as stealing her power, her family’s power, they would be worthless. Something felt oddly familiar about that idea.

The pages were ancient, old and yellowed with tears. Something about it was strange, like it was radiating magical energy, but it wasn’t normal energy more like a magnified radiation of it.

“Only a witch can read a spell book, but I’m afraid that none of the witches my family enlisted have been able to.” Kael stated, he reached a pointed at the left page, it looked like scribble and was unreadable. “The reason I don’t think it requires magical energy is because no amount of spells can break it.”

“No spells?” I whispered. I reached out for the book, my fingers ghosting over the pages. I suddenly felt sick to my stomach, as if I was about to do something unforgivable. I stopped, centimeters before touching the pages. “What about a spell not to break the curse but to find your mate?” I looked up at him.

A small smile found its way on his face. “The first witch my ancestors asked for help tried that, it made the witch lose her power for trying to change fate.”

“Wouldn’t the same thing would’ve happened to the witch that cursed your family?” I was trying to make sense of it all.

Witches had to follow the rules of magic, the rules of the stars. When magic was casted the result of that magic had to have a balance. Nothing could be made set in stone, everything had an end, some might be more complicated than others but it still had an end. Taking away the magic bond of a werewolf bloodline the consequence and balance should have been that witch losing her power, or her bond to magic. My mind snapped to the book, her magic bond was taken. It was right here in front of me.

She would have been powerless, I wonder how deep her bond ran with her magic, how powerless she must have felt now.

He shook his head. “She must have found a loophole.” He brought his attention back to the book. “But try giving it a shot, reading the book, even if you can figure out a single word would be amazing.”

I looked back down at the book. My head pounded in my skull.

The words, I wondered what they said.

I wondered what was going through her head when she cursed his bloodline. I reached out for the spell book once more but Kael pulled it away. “This can wait for after you get settled in, I don’t want to push things on you too soon.”

I looked up at him, he easily put the book back in its spot closing the glass case over it. He was so kind, in front of other people he seemed intimidating, and scary. But he just seemed like any other person now. Kind, handsome, a pang went through my chest. I clutched my chest, why was it hurting so bad? I shook my head and tried to ignore the pain as I brought my hand back down to my lap. That didn’t feel like it came from me.

“Are you okay?” Kael asked, a small smile on his lips as he turned to me.

Images flashed in my head.

A man with grey hair similar to Kaels was in front of me, he had his hand outstretched towards me and a handsome face, his eyes were a dazzling ice cold blue that seemed to peer in my soul. He was smiling, directly at me. As I looked at him, he was an exact carbon copy of Kael. His hair was pushed out of his face, which seemed strange.

“Are you okay?” His words were just as strong and powerful as Kaels. I felt my heart hammer in my chest. He was leaning forward, that’s when I realized I was looking up at him. Like I was on the ground.

“Yes, thank you.” It wasn’t my voice that left my mouth, it was more velvety, enchanting.

“I am Harrison, and may I have the pleasure of knowing your name?”

This wasn’t Kael. “I am Nyx.” I answered. I wasn’t sure what was going on.

“Sorry if this is rude, but you don’t seem like a witch.”

A sheepish smile found its way on his lips as I took the hand he helped me up. “I’m actually a werewolf, I’m here to find a witch willing to help me against the vampires.”

“Well since you helped me, I would be glad to return the favor.”

He beamed. “Really? Thank you, no other witch has even spared me a second glance.”

A small smile found its way to my face, my heart felt as if it was thumping out of my chest. “Call it fate.”

“Are you okay?” Kaels voice snapped the images out of my head. They looked the same, had the same voice but there tone was different. A desperation between them. Was I like Nyx? What did she look like? I looked up at him, my mind reeling. Should I tell him? Maybe this was a sign, a sign that I should leave the curse alone and run for it.
