I woke up to the warmth of my bed, groggily opening my eyes to find myself in my own room. The events of the previous night felt like a dream, but the soreness between my legs and the memories etched in my mind told me otherwise.
I slowly sat up, rubbing my temples to ease the throbbing headache. My eyes scanned the room, taking in the familiar surroundings. It was mid day already, the sun shone bright into the room. How did I even get here? A soft knock on the door broke the silence. "Astrid, are you awake?" Maya's gentle voice called out. I recognized the voice of my personal maid. "Yes, I'm awake," I replied, my voice hoarse from crying. The door creaked open, and Maya entered with a tray of steaming hot food. "I brought your breakfast, milady," she said, setting the tray down on my bedside table. My stomach growled at the aroma of freshly baked bread and roasted meats. Maya helped me sit up and fluffed my pillows. "Thank you, Maya," I managed to say, trying to hide my emotions. Maya's expression was sympathetic. "You're needed in the kitchen today, milady. Cook wants you to help with the day's meals." I nodded, feeling a mix of relief and dread. Kitchen duties would be a welcome distraction from my thoughts of Kael. I stood up, wincing slightly from the ache between my legs, I felt dry and patched, slowly I walked to the shower and got into the bath, dipping myself into the soothing warm water, after a long time the water started to get cold and I shivered. I stood up and wrapped myself in a soft robe, walking back into the room. Maya helped me get dressed and braided my hair. "Do you need anything before I go?" she asked. I shook my head. "No, thank you.” “Maya." I called stopping her in her tracks, “Yes?” “Was Megan in the Alphas room last night?” “She was called up one, early this morning so I’m not sure if she got in.” I nodded, “does that happen frequently?” A look of pity crossed her face before she nodded in response. My heart dropped. I nodded, again giving her a tight smile. With a gentle smile, Maya left me to finish my breakfast before heading to the kitchen. As I ate, my mind wandered back to Kael and the events of the previous night. Why did he stop? And what did he mean by "you're mine now"? The questions swirled in my head, but I pushed them aside, focusing on the tasks ahead. I made my way to the kitchen, my feet dragging with each step. As I entered, the room fell silent, and I was met with scornful looks from some of the pack members. Megan, in particular, glared at me with a mixture of disdain and triumph. I ignored her, focusing on the other people in the room. The cook, a burly man with a thick beard, stormed over to me. "Ah, Astrid, finally decided to show up," he growled. His tone was dripping with disdain. "You're late." I stood tall, trying not to flinch. "I apologize, sir." The cook snorted. "Apologies won't get the work done. You're assigned to prep duty today. Get to chopping those vegetables." He thrust a large knife into my hands. I took the knife, trying not to tremble. "Yes, sir." The cook turned to leave but spun back around. "And don't think for a second that your... extracurricular activities will get you out of your duties. You're still a servant, and you'll do your job." “Yes sir,” I answered lowering my head, as it was disrespectful to look another wolf in the eyes as long as they were higher than you in rank, as for me even the cubs are considered higher than me as I haven’t seen my wolf yet. Megan snickered, and I felt my face heat up in anger. I ignored her again, walking over to the table were very large cabbages and other vegetables were placed, I got to lifting them to the sink, one by one rinsing of the diets on their skin, and placing them back on the board, I turned all my attention to chopping them with precise, angry strokes. The cook's words stung, but I refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing me break. “Chef, since she’s a servant why doesn’t she pack her things to the servant quarters I don’t think the alpha would mind” Megan said, her voice loud enough for everyone to hear without having to strain their ears. The chef who bulky figure stood over the simmering pot of broth turned to look between me and Megan. “Huh, That wouldn’t be a bad idea,” he spoke. “After Lunch today, leave the room you are occupying at the moment as it is for our future luna. You will now be staying in the servant quarters like the rest of them.” I opened my mouth to protest, but it wasn’t going to make any difference. Even though I was the alpha’s s mate, he hasn’t claimed me yet as much as I’m grateful for, and I don’t think he’d like that I’m flaunting it to his pack…….and that will only work if the believe me. I sighed, going back to chopping the vegetables in front of me, I could feel the eyes of the other people in the room, as the whispered amongst themselves. Maya was nowhere to be found. The kitchen went back into it’s normal bustling with activity, the sounds of sizzling meat and clanging pots filling the air. Megan sauntered over to me, a sly smile spreading across her face. She leaned in close, her breath whispering against my ear. "You think you're special, don't you? That Kael's interested in you?" Her voice dripped with venom. I kept chopping, trying not to react. Megan's grip on my arm tightened. "You're nothing but a plaything, a temporary distraction. He'll tire of you soon enough." Her whisper grew louder. "And when he does, you'll be left with nothing. No protection, no favors. You'll be just another disposable servant." I tried to shake off her grip, but she held firm. Megan's eyes gleamed with malice. "You're no match for me, Astrid. I've been here longer, and I know how to play the game." With a final squeeze, she released my arm and sauntered away, leaving me feeling rattled and uneasy. The cook's bark cut through the tension. "Astrid, focus! You're slowing us down!" I took a deep breath, shutting out every sound around me, it has been an act I’ve mastered and done so many times in the past to help me focus. Just then, The kitchen door opens wide, and Sophia strode in, her eyes scanning the room until they landed on me. "Astrid, come with me," she commanded, her voice firm. I hesitated, looking at the cook, who nodded curtly. "Go. Whatever Sophia wants, it's probably more important than chopping vegetables." I wiped my hands on my apron and followed Sophia out of the kitchen, leaving the tension with Megan behind.“What is going on?” I asked Sophia as we walked out of the kitchen She remained silent in an unnerving manner. "What's going on? Did I do something wrong?" I asked again , trying to keep up with her brisk pace. Sophia didn't respond, leading me through the winding corridors of the mansion. We finally stopped at a door I recognized – the entrance to the luna’s private quarters. Veronica. My heart skipped a beat. Was I really in trouble? Sophia opened the door and nudged me inside. "She wants to see you," she said, her expression unreadable. I stepped inside, my eyes adjusting to the dim lighting. The room was empty, except for a figure standing by the window, cleaning the glass steadily. I found myself in an elegant anteroom. Sophia gestured for me to follow her. We walked through another set of doors, leading to the Luna's private chambers. The room was warm and inviting, with soft cushions and a crackling fireplace. Veronica, the Luna, sat on a plush couch, her once
“Line up girls! the Alphas and their Beta’s will be here today to pick a bride or a slave. So pray to the moon goddess that you’ll get picked or that’s another year for you here!” Madam Claudia shouted, banging the baton on the cell bars. “Who do you think will be here today?” Ruby, one of the girls in my room asked, happily pulling her dress over her head. “I hope I get picked. Better to be a slave to one wolf than a whore to all.” Renee snorted. She was another girl in the room and my worst enemy. “You! Get your scurry self here and clean my boots, at least one of us needs to be clean today,” she said, pointing to me. I nodded, walking over to her bed and bending forward to grab her boots from under the bed. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing? Huh?” She screamed in my ear, pulling my hair back. “Renee, you’re hurting me,” I whined, tears gathering in my eyes. “ let her go Renee, madam Claudia will be back soon. She won’t like that.” Aria said, coming out of our s
“Alright girls, file out.” Madam Claudia called from the hallway. “Astrid, sit. Let me brush your hair, you look like a tangled mess.” Aria said to me. Aria was the oldest she-wolf in the house of the lost. She has been here for eight years and house of the lost has alone stood for nine. She was brought here as a girl, got her first blood here, and turned to her wolf form here. She was more like a daughter to madam Claudia, we all know that madam Claudia loved her like family, but no one has ever spoken about it. She just turned 22 and has never been picked. I didn’t understand why, because she was very beautiful, her red hair glistened under the morning sun. I sat in front of the mirror in the room, she came up behind me holding her brush. “Hopefully someone picks you today, or rather pick Renee. I can’t deal with her dirty character anymore.” She said, “Why haven’t you been picked all this years?” I asked, looking at our reflection in the mirror. Pain flashed in her eyes
“The selection is about to begin. Cast your eyes on the ground girls!” Madam Claudia said from the end of the hall, her voice echoing. There was a little whispers, then there was silence. All you could hear were the slow pairs of boots walking on the paved floor. I looked down, my chest thumping against my skin. “Breath Astrid, or you’re going to collapse.” Aria said from my side. I nodded, taking deep breaths and exhaling, what was going to be my fate? Would I rather be picked than stay here for the rest of my life. Oh Selene if you can hear me, please be less cruel to me. I prayed, hoping that at least I wouldn’t get noticed. Then a pair of boots stopped in front of me, my breath caught in my throat. The shoe was a brown leather, one you could only see on the feet of the rich. It smelled like it had been polished a million times over that morning and I wondered if it was some like me that did that. “Who is she?” The man grunted to madam Claudia, I think. “Tha
I walked into the dark room my chest thumping against my skin. “Pack your things, you have leaving today.” Madam Claudia spoke. “What?” I gasped. The man in the chair had his back to me but I cold feel the cold aura the was coming from him. I’ve been bought? “Don’t let me repeat myself Astrid, pack your things.” Madam Claudia answered. “Ye…yes ma’m.” I stuttered turning my back to them and walking out of the room. I got across the hall without much hassle from Renee and her friends but my happiness was short lived. I pushed open the bar door to the room, and entered. The bar doors were remade last moon when one of the girls was caught bent over by a guard in her room while her roommates stood outside waiting. I had never seen madam Claudia as angry as she was that day. She roared and turned to her wolf form, slashing the man from behind. His dead body dropped on the girl, blood and skin splattered everywhere. Well that was a warning to all of us. And we never heard
I don’t know how long I was asleep but the carriage came to an abrupt stop, causing me to bump my head against the window Frame. “Ow.” I jerked awake, rubbing my head. We arrived at a cozy inn as the sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow. Alpha Kael opened his eyes, his gaze piercing through me. "We'll rest here for the night," he said, his deep voice stirring me awake from my half-sleep. I rubbed my eyes, taking in the rustic inn's wooden sign: "Moonlight Haven." The carriage door swung open, and Kael stepped out, offering his hand. I hesitated before taking it, his grip firm but not ungentle. Inside, the inn was warm and inviting. A fire crackled, casting flickering shadows. Kael led me to a private dining room. A feast awaited: roasted meats, steaming vegetables and fresh bread. "You're malnourished," he observed bluntly. "Eat," he commanded, his tone tight. "We leave early." I took a spoonful of food into my mouth, still very cautious of his presence in the room
As the gate swung open, I caught my breath. The Red Moon Territory's grandeur stunned me. Towering spires and majestic architecture stretched toward the sky. Alpha Kael descended from the carriage, his movements fluid. "Out," he ordered. I followed, smoothing my dress. A sea of faces awaited. Wolves of all ages, dressed in finery, lined the courtyard. Their curious gazes settled on me. Alpha Kael's stern expression remained unchanged. "Stay by my side." I nodded, falling into step beside him. As we entered the grand hall, whispers erupted. "The new one." "From the House of the Lost." "Alpha Kael's acquisition." My cheeks flushed. At the hall's center, an imposing figure stood: an older wolf with piercing blue eyes. "Alpha Elijah," Kael said, bowing slightly. Alpha Elijah's gaze swept over me. "Welcome, Astrid. You're a rare find." His words sent shivers down my spine. "Dominique, your generosity is renowned," Elijah continued. "Sharing your... acquisition with
As I soaked in the warm bath, Maya's words lingered in my mind. "Different." What did that mean? And what lay ahead tonight? The water's warmth seeped into my muscles, relaxing my tense body. Maya chatted softly, her voice distracting me from my worries. "You'll love the dress we picked out for tonight. It's one of the finest in the territory." I nodded, giving her small smile. As I finished bathing, Maya helped me into the a robe. The cotton fabric hugged my body in the most comfortable snuggle, shimmering in the candlelight. Sophia entered the room, giving me a bored look. “You need to eat before we take you out there.” “ I’ll get someone to arrange something quickly,” Maya said, tuning out of the room. Megan scoffed, sitting on the bed with her legs crossed. “Sit, let’s do something about your hair,” Sophia commanded. I slowly walked over to the vanity, pushing back the chair adorned with red velvet and gold just like the one in the carriage. I took a seat and
