The next day Riviera listens to her mother and explores the community. She wants to get away from the noise and confusion in her yard, but mostly in hopes to see that man that caught her eye.
Everyone seems friendly. Either smiling, waving at her. Or coming up to her and having conversations with her.
She soon grows tired of saying her name and introducing herself over and over, and even tired of trying to find her mystery man.
"Hey,'' Riviera turns to the voice. Her eyes widen at the sight before her and she had to hold back a laugh.
The girl before her has a botched face, looking like a b-list celebrity with mismatching lips (her top lip is fat and hangs over her lower lip, which is daunted in pink lipstick.) Her fake fashes seem more like fly legs, and her breasts are ready to pop out of her top.
"I'm Garcia, you must be Riviera. I guess what they said is true, you are pretty but not as pretty as me.'' The girl laughs.
Riviera looks the girl up and down already, telling that they won't be friends, with her bad tan that is almost orange, bleach blonde hair that is wild, puffy and all over the place.
"We are going down to the front. Why don't you join? You'll fit right in." she turns with the flip of the hair as if she expects Riviera to follow her.
Riviera was about to decline, but thought against it, thinking that she might run into her 'friend'.
"I don't have a swimsuit,'' Riviera stops.
"No need for that.'' Garcia smiles, applies more lipstick, smacks her lips together, and continues walking.
Another girl joins them, along with a boy who has a stupid grin on his face.
"River, River meet Christa and Erich, Erich is my boyfriend.'' Garcia gives Riviera a look as if saying I dear you to try and steal him.
The two start making out, making weird whimpering sounds, when they pull apart a long trail of saliva trails between them.
Fighting off a gag, Riviera turns her head away. Gracia has nothing to worry about, Erich seems like a douche bag and not her type.
After walking for a while longer, the foursome finally reaches a small cliff that has a trail leading down to the beach.
"Nice.'' Riviera takes a deep breath in and makes her way down.
The shoreline is teeming with people her age, some dance to upbeat music, while others are either swimming, drinking or making jokes with others.
"Hey everyone! Meet Riviera!'' Gracia declares, getting her name right this time around.
Riviera looks around for the guy from yesterday, not interested in anyone there.
"Looking for someone, maybe. Mr. Right, aka the man of your dreams." A boy with a clean shave head dances before her.
'Not you.' Riviera thought, then sidestep him.
After a while, she gives up her search and was about to leave when someone almost hit her with a surfboard.
"Watch it, nerd!" Erich tries to chase him away.
"Or what?'' The boy asks.
Comparing to Erich he doesn't add up to much. Erich might have been a couple of inches taller, built like a linebacker with lean muscles.
"Showing out for the new girl.'' Erich scuffs, but turns away from the scrawny boy who has zero muscles, an acne-covered face and braces to fix his crooked teeth.
"You surf?'' Riviera asks, trying to make conversation.
"No, I just like to carry around this board that is twice my size." He remarks.
Riviera cracks a smile. "If I knew that this place had its own private beach, I would have brought mine.''
"Oh, for real, the pretty girl surfs. I'm Jeremiah.'' He awkwardly extends a hand.
"Oh no honey, we don't talk to him.'' Garcia tries to get in between the two. "Here.'' She hands Riviera a beer.
"I'll pass.'' She then shakes Jeremiah's hand. "Riviera. Even though you should have known that, I am the new popular thing.''
Jeremiah laughs, ''let's see what you got.'' He leans over the board towards Riviera. She gladly takes it with a smile.
"Riviera, I know you are new here and all. But, hanging with people like him is not good for your image, I mean-"
"I think I can decide for myself.'' Riviera dismisses her.
Gracia makes a face, then walks away with a huff.
Jeremiah gives her a look as if he is unsure about her.
'What?''
"Nothing, just that. You're talking to me and you are friends with them."
Riviera rolls her eyes. ''not really my crowd.''
"Well, just so you know, going against Queen G's words is a no-no.''
Riviera snorts, "I really don't care.''
She kicks off her shoes and races towards the ocean before Jeremiah could say anymore; she jumps on the board and pedals her arms as far as she can go. Saltwater splash in her face, but she welcomes it, feeling free again.
When Riviera gets done and paddles back to the shore, both she and Jeremiah are grinding at each other.
"I can honestly say that I never took you for the surfer chick, thought that this would have been another prank." Jeremiah kicks at some sand.
"I would never do that, well only if you are a celebrity. Mostly Perez Hilton.''
The two laugh.
Just then, as if Riviera could sense it, she turns toward 'him'. She doesn't hear a word Jeremiah is saying.
"Who is that?'' She asks.
Jeremiah makes a face before opening his mouth
"That's the Alpha.'' Garcia beats him to it, seeming to appear out of nowhere.
"That's the Alpha? Like the leader of the pack?'' Riviera couldn't believe it.
Garcia does a little giggle. "Don't worry, none of us are good enough for him. I mean, if I couldn't work my charms on him I don't see how can.''
Riviera can see the Alpha gazing their way. She bites on the nail of her thumb. She never thought that the Alpha would be so young and sexy.
She even contemplated going over there and see something to him, but then again he must have ignored Garcia for a reason. She is too young after all and there is not tell what his age is.
Compared to herself, Riviera doubts she can even get his attention. Besides, he could have only been staring at her because of what had happened, and the connection she felt could have been him sending pity her way.
Riviera suddenly feels guilty for having a crush on someone older than her. Feeling frustrated, she kicks her right foot. The moment she does, a chill creeps into the air. The sky gets dark and it starts to hail, then six waterspouts form on the sea, with one threatening to come on land.
"That's weird, the border should protect Havendale from these kinds of things.'' Jeremiah puts forward, he watches as the wind dances on the water top getting closer to shore.
"What are you talking about?''
"You have a lot to learn, surfer girl. A magical border protects Havendale so we don't experience normal weather. This is the first time I'm seeing hail or a waterspout, have only learnt about them.
A beach umbrella sails past the two, a rope that is at the end of its pole somehow wraps around Riviera's leg and drags her along the sand.
At first, she screamed, but her instinct tells her to untie herself. Unfortunately, she is moving too fast and couldn't find the momentum to sit up.
The umbrella only continues to carry her out further and into the surf.
Her peers chase after her, trying their best at a rescue attempt, but the winds pick up speed and lift Riviera in the air. She screams as the wind spins her around. Feeling as if she is going to be sick, she squeezes her eyes shut, expecting the worst but praying for the best.
Then the spinning stops, and she plummets. Afraid that her body is going to crash and maybe break from the impact, she starts crying.
She didn't know how it happens, neither can she explain it. But the Alpha, who is at a distance away, somehow breaks her fall by catching her and the both of them sink below the surface.
The Alpha, still with Riviera in his arms, walks out of the water. She couldn't help but blush about how close her body is to his.
"Are you ok?'' His rich, smooth voice comes.
Riviera nods, afraid that her voice may fail her.
The Alpha places her on her feet, but her legs got wobbly and if it wasn't for him catching her, she would have fallen face first.
"Let me take you home.'' He suggests, still holding her up.
Riviera walks up the sand dunes slowly. She didn't even bother to say goodbye to anyone. All she does is walk gingerly on the ground because she didn't bother to get her shoes. She walks silently behind the Alpha, watching his every step.
The drive to the house is long and silent. Neither of them tried to make conversation, but what could she even say to him, with him being older than her.
When they pull up to the house, Mary-Kate runs out with tears streaming down her face.
"Riviera," she pulls her daughter into a hug, Riviera tries to shuffle out of the embrace, but her mother holds her firm. She now felt too tired and didn't want her mother gushing over her.
"Thank you, Alpha Sebastián.'' Mary-Kate nods.
Riviera glances at him. The two hold each other gaze before he turns to leave.
For almost a week after the accident, Riviera stayed inside. Trying to escape the pity party, which seems to always turn up at her doorstep, and she is also trying to avoid the Alpha. Still not understanding her infatuation with him. She doesn't understand half the stuff that is going on. Her mother had told her that when school starts, she will learn all she needs to know, but she doesn't want to learn anything. All she wants to do is go back home. She is missing all the summer fun with her friends. They should go on a mini camping trip today. Riviera stares at the newly installed pool. She doesn't even have a way to contact them. Thinking that it must confuse them when they went to her old house and find that it is empty. Would they think someone has kidnapped her? Riviera groans, then gets up from her window seat and makes her way downstairs for breakfast. She feels so alone in this big house. Her mother is always at work. The maid, Justina, said lit
"Riviera, time to get up, it's almost time for school.'' Mary-Kate shakes her daughter awake. Riviera opens one eye then turns away from her mother. "I don't want to go to school." Mary-Kate sighs before taking a seat on Riviera's bed, "I know that this sudden change has been hard for you but I promise it will only get better." "You don't know that, you don't have to go through high school,'' Riviera grumbles. "Trust me, I've had my fair share back in the day. It was hard for me too, my parents moved a lot. I didn't understand why. And the colour of my skin made it hard to fit in anywhere. I was either too dark for the white kids, or too light for the black kids. It was hard for me to fit in until that day I made friends. I'm sure that you will find some common ground with someone, like that boy that surfs.'' Riviera wasn't listening to her mother's rumblings. She got lost somewhere between my parents and moving. That might have been the first
Riviera walks around looking for a place to sit, but all the seats seem to be taken already. Except for one that had to a girl sitting by herself. While making her way over, Garcia comes to stand before her. Expecting another fight, Riviera grips her food tray ready to use it as a weapon. "I saved you a seat," Garcia says. She seems extra cheerful and seems to have forgotten about their fight. "Thanks, but I need a little time to myself to process all that is happening." Riviera walks off, nothing waiting for her response. "Hey, can I sit with you?" The brown hair girl looks up, the look on her face says. 'She is talking to me?' She gives a curt nod, as if she is unsure. Riviera pulls out her chair, which scrapes on the ground. "I'm Riviera." She says. The girl looks up at her, "I know everyone is talking about you, they have been since the day you came." The girl looks down and fumbles to open her milk. "So wh
With the weekend fast approaching, the death of a teacher rocks the community of Havendale on Thursday. Miss. Sherwood, the chemistry teacher. Even though Riviera didn't like her because of her method of punishment, and the way she talks to the students, she thinks of as unruly. Riviera feels bad. No one deserves to die. The worst part of it is that her 2-year-old son was the one to find her. "Hey, you guys want to come over to my house? My mom makes fantastic briskets.'' Kylie offers, right after they dismiss school to have a few days of mourning and Miss. Sherwood funeral. ''Are you sure that we are welcome?'' Jeremiah asks. Kylie nods, "she loves having company over.'' Riviera shrugs, not seeing any harm in going to a friend's house. The three walk down a path to where Kylie says she lived. Which leads them to a different side of Havendale. Where the houses are smaller, the roads aren't so clean and the grass is yellow.
Just when it seems as if things couldn't get worst they did, with three more deaths. One, including Kylie's father. Everyone is questioning things. They even blamed Riviera and her mother for bringing an omen or being the omen themself in Havendale. "If this isn't a reason to leave Havendale now, then I don't know what is." Riviera states. "Will you stop being such a sulk, I already talked to the Alpha, and he is going to clear things up.'' Mary-Kate didn't even look at Riviera as she gives her reply. "Yeah, just as how he is taking care of finding Mr. Tiller. How can super wolves not find a teacher?'' Not wanting to go back and forth with her daughter, Mary-Kate pretends to talk a call. Riviera groans. She hates Havendale more and more. The community seems smaller and smaller with each passing day. The normal routine is just to feel robotic. Now with the hype of her arrival dying down, all the accusations of the dead bodies, most of t
By now Riviera has gotten used to half of the kids in Havendale not speaking to her and avoiding her, mostly because of Garcia her now enemy, has spread some rumour about her having the wolf Pungo virus. She doesn't even know what that is, but either way, she doesn't mind, she now knows who her real friends are, and no one is around her pretend to like her for her things, mostly her pool. Riviera is more than happy with the two friends she has, and couldn't care less if everyone else hated her. Even though sometimes she thinks her friends secretly hate her and is only trying to gather information to embarrass her. Even some teachers were included in the hate group, mostly because Riviera gave them a hard time, refusing to do any work that involves anything that wolves. But it was mostly because of the hard time they gave her for not b
"Riviera!'' Jeremiah calls her name. Riviera jumps and looks at him. "Are you ok?'' Kylie leans forward, looking at Riviera's white knuckles. "Hey, ju-'' She didn't have time to finish what she is saying because a large gray wolf comes charging out from behind a house, Riviera swerves just in time to avoid the impact with the wolf but its claws still slices through the front end like hot butter. The car gets out of control and sails across the pavement. Riviera can smell the leaking for the petrol and think of a plan fast. "We have to jump.'' She tells her friends, unbuckling her seat belt. "Are you out of your mind?'' Kylie exclaims, from the back where she grips her seat. Jeremiah didn't protest. He throws his bag through the window and looks back at Kylie. "Climb over,'' he tells her. Kylie shakes her head. "Come on Kylie, Happy and your mom will miss you." Riviera tries to talk her up. It seems to wo
Riviera wakes up the next morning, gets ready for school and is about to leave when her mother stops her, "honey. I have some good news. School is being postponed until further notice.'' Mary-Kate smiles. Riviera raises a brow at her. "How is that good news? I don't even know if my friends are ok.'' "Well, we can have a nice bonding time. I don't have work and Justina isn't here so we will have as much time to ourselves." Mary-Kate pushes her daughter back upstairs. "Now get dressed in your pyjamas or not, but just get ready to have a nice mommy-daughter bonding time.'' Mary-Kate smiles. After getting charged into a grey shorts and black swim suit top, Riviera comes back downstairs to see her mother dancing to workout videos. She steps ups, twists her body and then touches her toes, only to repeat the movement. "Oh, honey, care to join." Mary-Kate waves at the space beside her. "No," Riviera walks away, and heads of
"I still can't believe that you knew we were mated to each other all this time."''Yes, but I was afraid to say anything. You know how the Fates are."Sabastian kiss Riviera as she sits cross-legged on the bed before him."After a week, and I still can't believe you are my mate." Sabastian said as he pulls away from her."Do you want to mark each other to make it more real?" Riviera suggests.Sabastian smiles, but it quickly fades.“Are you sure that this is what you want?""Sabastian, you are my mate. Of course, this is what I want."Sabastian nods, then removes his shirt.Riviera takes a deep breath to drink in his intoxicating scent. Then let her blouse fall off one of her shoulder to protect her innocent, as she is still virgin.Sabastian leans forward to kiss her neck, causing her to shiver and gasp."Your skin is so smooth, soft and smells so good." Sabastian said, running his lips back and fort
Riviera sits before her friend and her new found mate, as they spend most of the lunch hour making out.Riviera nods her head to unheard music, while trying to look elsewhere but at them.Kylie pulls away from Henson, then gasps."Riviera! I just remembered. Your birthday is tomorrow. Are you going down to the beach tonight?"Kylie pushes her mate away when he tries to pull her into another kiss."No, I told you before I'm not too interested in this and have my own traditions.''"Like what? You are so boring." Henson puts across."Not something a normal wolf like you would understand." Riviera tells him."Why did you say that?" Kylie asks, slapping her mate on the shoulder."Because it is true. You have all these awesome powers and don't show them off. You never go partying. So what is the point?""You can be an ass-hat sometimes." Kylie said, pulling away from him."It's fine. I mean, my boring lifestyle i
The morning before her eighteenth birthday, Riviera gets a call from Kylie, which wakes her from her sleep."Kylie, it's five in the morning." Riviera said into her phone."I know, but I think I can smell my mate."Riviera groans, "Kylie, you wake me up to tell me this?""Sorry, dumb I know, but I had to share it with someone.""And you chose me?""Yes, because my sister is in her room with her mate. Anyway, would you like to be a part of the midnight celebration as well?""No, I have my own traditions.""Will, if you should change your mind, you have until Thursday.""Bye, Kylie, I'm going back to sleep.""Wait, wait, wait. Will you be coming tonight?""I'm hanging up." Riviera said, pressing the call end button, then throwing her phone at the foot of her bed.Even though Riviera rolls over to find a better spot, she still can't bring herself to fall asleep again.Giving up, and knowing her p
And even after two days, whatever was in the shadow never truly stepped out, but lingers just enough for Riviera to sense it.And now, today at school, Riviera can feel something stalking her from the dark."Keep it up and I'll be forced to destroy you." Riviera said to a dark corner as she passes by.The feeling of being watched immediately goes away."Hey bestie." Kylie said, running up to Riviera."You seem excited." Riviera notes."Because tomorrow is my birthday and I can't wait for the stroke of midnight to see who my mates is."Riviera almost tells her friend to not get her hopes up, but she doesn't want to sound rude. Even though she doesn't want to see her friend get her feeling hurt again."And Friday is mine." Riviera gives a smile."This is so exciting." Kylie claps. The two walks to their next class, which was Math, to see Jason sitting by himself. He looks up then quickly looks down to avoid t
Riviera gets back home at around one pm. She immediately knew that someone had been in her room. She doesn't recognise the scent the person left behind. In fact, it doesn't smell like another wolf or any other creature she came across before.Riviera tries to use her power to sense out if she could pick up on who it was, but comes up with nothing.Riviera hurries downstairs to where her little brother is playing with his tablet and her mother is reading a book."Mom, did someone come here today?""No, why?""Someone has been in my room.""That's odd. I was by myself the entire time and never picked up on a
"Tell me about yourself, Sabastian.""You are the all knowing true Alpha. You should know everything about me."Riviera scoffs, "ok fine. Just like me see, that was your first kiss. Both of us acted out of impulse. You have been to two hundred and thirty-seven countries, mostly Europe. Your favourite colour is blue. You are the only child and your heart is racing a mile per hour because you never expected me to do this."Sabastian chuckles, "do you normally violate people like that?""No, it is something I don't enjoy doing because everyone deserves their own privacy. And I only scratch the surface so I didn't see much.""I was only joking. With me, it's totall
Riviera tries to tiptoe up the stairs. Even though her parents were lenient with her coming home past midnight, she doesn't want to make too much noise to wake anyone up.Suddenly the lights switch on."Was that the Alpha?" Her father asks.Riviera freeze."Uh, yes, yes it was.""What did he want?""To make sure I got home safe.""Well, that was awfully nice of him.''Luca gets up and walks over to his daughter."He didn't do anything to you
Kylie begins to squeal as her peers count down."This is so exciting." She said, grabbing Riviera by the upper arm and shaking her."Five, four, three." Kylie said. When it gets to midnight, Riviera glances around wondering what is suppose to happen now. Cheering goes up when Jason walks over to Joy, the girl Riviera, and Kylie saw him with.Kylie makes a whimpering sound.Riviera brushes against her. “Trust me, when your time comes, you will be too happy to focus on him.""Man, my little brother found his mate before I did. Now there is one more thing I won't be able to live down." Justin said.Sabastian scoffs, "trying being the Alpha."Kylie groans out of frustration."Riviera, can you take me home, please?" She asks.Sabastian gets up at the same time Riviera does."Justin, make sure this ends by twelve-thirty. I will make sure Riviera and Kylie get home safe.""There is no need. I drove he
Riviera drums her fingers on her steering wheel as she waits outside the colonial-style house where Kylie lives. The other she-wolf comes running out, dressed in a white shorts and orange top, making Riviera suddenly feel under dressed. As she has on an oversized gray sweater, a pair of black jeans and black converse."Ready to go." Kylie said, after entering the car."Where to?""The beach. That's where all the teen parties are kept."At first, the two of them are silent."So, who is going to turn eighteen?""Jason, Keith and Audrey."Riviera said nothing until they arrive at the beach."Wow, seems as if everyone from school is here." Riviera said, noting that even those from the lower class are present."It's kind of a big thing. Everyone gets excited about it.""And a lot of underage drinking." Riviera said."What are you, the police?" A boy walking by with his friends stops."No, but she w
