Mate?
My wolf perked up with great interest as soon as the lady stepped into my office. It was the first time I felt that way after two whole years. After facing crude rejection two years ago, I lost all hope of finding another mate, as none had come forth. I had focused entirely on my oil business. I was just a weak omega, considered incapable of protecting a mate when the time came. Mate? My wolf called again, and just then, I looked up to find a gorgeous blonde walking into my office. My eyes scanned her from legs to head, and I couldn't stop staring, admiring the elegance the moon had decided to bring to me. I felt my wolf, Sphinx, look through my eyes to stare at the lady. Sphinx had taken to the name when we went on a tourist vacation in Egypt and had decided to go by that name. My eyes met the lady's, which were sexily greenish-brown. Those hazel eyes made me go numb for what felt like hours. I need my mate, Sphinx growled. I suppressed him. She was going to be my employee, and I had to maintain that I was the boss here. I quickly cleared my throat to distract us both from overly staring. I clenched my fists. My mate was this close to me, and yet, I couldn't even touch her. The boss-employee relationship was coming between us. “I’m here for the interview, sir,” she said. Yet, I still felt the irresistible urge to stare at her long legs, at the bulge on her chest, and for the first time, I gulped. My wolf began to pace, growling and snarling in my head. I realized I was supposed to say something to her. “Have a seat,” I said, letting her sit opposite me. We sat in silence as I tried to calm my raging wolf. Was this obsession? Once he felt a lady was our mate, he made me so uncomfortable until I proposed. You said that before, Sphinx, and what did it get us? Heartbreak. A cold rejection at the most crucial moment when I had almost placed my mark, I shouted at Sphinx, who was still nagging. I don’t care what you think. Just make sure you get our mate, Sphinx warned and retreated into the dark corner of my mind. I finally focused. I realized she was waiting for me to start the interview. “Well…” I began, crossing my arms over my desk. “What’s your name?” “Amelia Clayton,” I felt her nervousness. It was only natural. “I’ll call you Amelia. It’s more unique and sweet.” That was a bit fast! I screamed at myself. Calling her sweet already? Damnit! This isn’t fast! Go ahead and make her fall for you, Sphinx screamed, and I almost sighed in frustration. “I’m sorry, sir, Mr. Neil Morreti?” I noticed her take a short look at the placard on my desk. Oosh! She sounded like my help. I wouldn’t let her call me by my full name. “Yes, but you can call me Neil.” I stared down at my computer to finish up the oil standards survey before kicking my chair back. I needed to be close to her. To sniff and mark her scent. To unlock my insides with a sniff of her hair. But instead, I walked to the front of my desk and leaned against it. “How old are you, Amelia?” I asked as I crossed my arms over my chest. “I’m twenty, sir.” I noticed her shyness. I arched my brow as I considered her age. She was still very young, and I really loved the idea of having a young mate. I wasn’t that old. I was just twenty-eight. We were very much compatible, but I would give it time to be natural. I smiled as the thought of having a second-chance mate crossed my mind again. I walked behind her and leaned forward on her seat. “I took a look at your resume last night, and I must say it’s quite impressive,” I tried to get formal, then I remembered she had never worked for any company despite her good vitae. “You graduated one year ago, but you weren’t able to secure a job to gain work experience. Why is that?” I sniffed her hair. Sweet shampoo. “It’s kind of personal, sir.” I nodded slightly, but then I saw a ring on her finger, more like a wedding ring. “Then,” I began, my eyes on the diamond ring as I wished it wasn’t true, “are you married?” I asked. She suddenly turned and almost kissed my cheek. That little closeness gave me enough time to share a breath with her. She sharply turned to the ring. “Engaged,” she said, and I felt my heart shatter. Why did such things keep happening to me? Or was I too late this time? Would I lose my mate again? That she is engaged doesn’t mean she is definitely going to get married, Neil. An engagement could still be called off, Sphinx suddenly suggested. You’re right. It doesn’t mean I’ve lost her entirely. I walked over to the chair on her right and sat beside her. “Any plans for the wedding yet?” I asked, my hopes high. “It’s one day away.” I almost jerked off the chair in surprise and mainly disappointment, but I still managed to hold my composure. “And you’re here for the interview?” What kind of question was that? The moon brought her to us! If she wasn’t here, you wouldn’t have found out she was your mate, Sphinx grumbled. “My marriage won’t stop my dreams,” I saw her shut her eyes peripherally. “That sham won’t rip me of my profession. I need to become an independent woman.” Sham? That didn’t sound happy. Was she being forced? I knew it didn’t sound formal, but I had to ask her why. “Sham? So much for getting married. You sound irritated. You’re supposed to be happy.” “I’m sorry, sir, but—can we skip that?” I sighed. I wanted to ask about the circumstances surrounding the engagement and marriage, but since she didn’t want to talk about it, I bit back the questions. It would be better to keep her close to me for now and get to know her better, and that meant giving her the job. Nice idea. Sounds like Neil, Sphinx complimented, and I almost smiled. “Alright…” I cleared my throat and reclined in the chair. “Then would you like to be my secretary and senior analyst? You’d fetch my paperwork, lunch, or drinks when I choose." "You’d take my phone calls and be in charge of organizing my schedule, and you’d accompany me on any business trips or lunches, be it far or near, while fulfilling your duties as the senior analyst of the company. Would that be okay with your fiancé?” I added. Even though I wanted her close for now until I got to know her better, I wouldn’t want to risk putting her in danger. She looked so afraid. I didn’t know what her marriage would look like, but if she didn’t want to get married and felt she was being forced, I could help her. “He has no choice but to accept,” she said, surprisingly harsh this time. This was not a marriage driven by love; I sensed something was wrong. Who was she getting married to? I was tempted to ask. “Does this mean I got the job, sir?” “The position is all yours. Just make sure to be punctual and hardworking, then we’ll be on good terms.” Not that I would be too hard on her. She nodded. “Thank you, sir.” “Neil,” I quickly corrected her. I wouldn’t want her addressing me as sir. Others could, but she would be an exception. “Thank you, Neil.” “Alright, Amelia. I’ll see you tomorrow at seven.” I couldn’t wait for her to start work so I could have her by my side every day. She quickly stood and checked her watch. “Gosh,” she exclaimed, rushing to leave but tripping over her seat and beginning to fall. I moved on impulse with all my wolf stamina. I wouldn’t let my mate get hurt. Our faces were close enough that we shared the same breath. Her warm breath cascaded over my face as I searched her face with my eyes. My gaze rested on her perfect bow-shaped lips, and I began to lean closer. The irresistible urge to kiss her began to overcome my sanity. I couldn’t think of anything more than to feed on those luscious lips. The desire kept me steady as I continued aiming for her lips. But then the door pushed open, and someone walked in. “Time is up, Amelia. We have to…” I quickly let her stand. It was too early to be caught in an awkward position. “Watch your step,” I said, turning to the intruder who dared to rob me of this moment. He was tall and muscularly built. The shock on his face told me he was somehow connected to Amelia. “Who are you?” I asked him. “He’s my personal bodyguard,” Amelia answered instead. I noticed the lush nervousness on Amelia’s face as she picked up her bag. “Thank you, Neil, for giving me this job. I won’t disappoint,” Amelia said, beginning to move away. My heart went limp as I watched her step out of my office. What if she didn’t come back? I made to go after her and ask where she lived, but my door pushed open again, and a lady walked in, legs first, until her full tall body came into view. Staring at her face, I felt nothing but strong disgust. Even my wolf repelled her scent. Why was she here? The infidel that rejected me years back! I looked away—not now that I had found my mate. “What are you doing here, Mirabel?”I knew Leo must have seen and misinterpreted the complicated position I had been in with Neil, and he was definitely going to tell Lorenzo. That would put me in trouble. I might not secure this job if that happened. I walked behind Leo, lost in thought. He held the car door open for me, and I slipped in, making sure to glance at his impassive face. I swallowed hard. How could I start to explain things to him? He slid into the car and started the engine. After a few minutes of driving, I cleared my throat. It was better to say whatever I had to say before we got home. “Look, Leo, I almost fell to the floor...” He jerked the car to a stop in the middle of the road and sharply turned to me. My heart began to pound against my chest. “Did he push you?” “No... I mean, I tripped and almost fell, but he— the CEO— saved me.” “I thought as much. You’d never cheat on Lorenzo unless you wanted to die,” Leo said as he steered the car. I exhaled partly in relief and partly due to nervousness an
I clenched my teeth in anger and folded my fingers to form a fist. I was sure I must have ceased the free passage of blood to my fingers with such tightness. I looked away from her. This was no time to reunite with someone as shrewd as she was. "I came to see you," Mirabel said. Her cynical voice set Sphinx snarling. I tried to suppress him as he made attempts to push out. "Why do you want to see me? Does your mate know about this?" I tried to remain calm. Hit the bitch already. Stop talking to her! Sphinx growled, seeing the mark still visible on her nape, something that infuriated him even more. "He died..." So? Sphinx flared, barking dangerously, almost tampering with my own voice. "So?" I asked. "In a pack war. The alpha of the Bezos pack killed him and took the weak wolves of the pack as his work slaves. I barely escaped. It was a friend who saved me from the pack." How is that our business? Sphinx growled. "How is that our..." I gulped. Ah! I wouldn't repeat what this wo
"Watch where you're going," the man shouted as he continued on his way. Lily helped me up, and in an instant, I saw Leo grab the man by his jacket, shoving him against the wall of the nearest building. "Who sent you?" he asked through gritted teeth. The man's eyes widened, his chest rising and falling in fear and shock. "Do you have any idea who you just knocked to the ground?" "N-n-no," the man stuttered, his ragged breaths audible. I felt a pang of sympathy; he looked like he might wet his pants. "I'm so sorry. I should have watched where I was going. It's my fault," he pleaded. "You just disrespected the capo of Chicago." Leo tightened his grip. "What’s your name?" The man began to sweat, and I felt for him. He hadn’t committed a serious crime—he had simply bumped into me. "G-Gaith Keller," the frightened man stuttered. "Where do you live?" "Thompson Street, a few blocks away." Leo released Gaith, and he ran off so quickly that he vanished within seconds. "Are you alrig
I knew Amelia was going to do something silly after I overheard her conversation with her mum. I wrapped my arms around her and turned her back to the stairs. She kicked. She screamed. But I was too strong for her. "Let me go!" I ignored her and took her back to her room. I pushed her onto the bed and crouched over her. My hands pinned her arms to the bed while my legs held hers firmly as I forced her to look at me. Her lips quivered as she tried to fight back tears. "Cry all you want, Amelia. This is your life now. Don't try to escape it. I won't be merciful the next time." "You can do whatever you want! I am not afraid of you!" "You will be when I give you a taste of who I truly am." I gulped when my eyes moved to the bulge on her chest. I would wait. I slowly got down from her and took one more look at her. She was even more beautiful with her disheveled hair. "I have to take care of the Gaith who dares disrespect my property." "Let him be. Don't be a bloody killer," she beg
Thoughts flooded my mind as I drove home late that night. My heart felt heavy, and my throat seemed to constrict around a huge, spiky lump, trying to choke me. Was this truly how I would lose my second chance mate and remain mateless? Was I fated to be alone forever? How could I possibly get my mate, who was soon to be lawfully wedded to the most dangerous mafia leader in Chicago? If we can't get her peacefully, we'll get her forcefully, Sphinx grumbled. How do we get her forcefully? Can't you see she's someone's wife?Don't tell me you're cowering from a mere human! I won't lose my mate again! You have to fight for what belongs to you! I blamed the moon for placing me in such a complicated position. Even Amelia was scared. She couldn't even stand up to Lorenzo, let alone confront someone like me, who had no relationship with him whatsoever. How could I convince Amelia that she was my mate? Humans didn't understand what it meant to have a mate. Then convince her. Get her to love you.
Just jump! Jump down the cliff! I yelled at Sphinx, who was still trying to figure out a plan. I’d rather face the feral alpha than jump down the cliff. We don’t even know if there are other dangerous rogues down there! The rustling of leaves became much louder, forcing Sphinx to stay alert. The wolf's barking growls came even closer as he appeared from the thick covering of leaves. Then the alpha growled, loudly at first, until he began to whimper. Then I realized it. He was hurt. It was a painful growl. I looked down at his paw and noticed he was bleeding profusely, a strong iron trap embedded in his right paw. He had just stepped into a trap. Was it there when Sphinx passed? How had Sphinx managed to avoid it? I saw the trap, if that’s what you were thinking. He was just desperate and didn’t watch his step, Sphinx said. I sensed his pride as we watched the alpha struggle with the trap. The traps in the woods were set by wolf hunters—Operation Wipe Out Wolves. The alpha wolf whi
I sat at the vanity chair and endured all the prodding and pulling of the makeup and hair stylists. I had spent a whole day locked up in my room. Lorenzo made sure I didn't come out until today, my wedding day. The makeup team worked frantically to make my skin look smooth and freckle-free. They added fake eyelashes and juvenile red lipstick. The heated curlers burned my scalp slightly, and I endured it. When the hairstylist undid the curlers, my blonde hair pooled down my shoulders in thick, loose curls. They pulled some of it back and added a gold clip for accessories. They helped me into the most expensive dress I had ever owned. The thick wedding dress hugged my body and flowed down at my hips. Barely two minutes after I finished dressing up, my parents came in. My father's expression looked unfazed and showed no sign of what he felt towards me. My mother gasped in admiration. "My daughter, you are so beautiful," she said as she gently grabbed my hands and squeezed them soft
I unzipped the suitcase that my mother had packed for me. All I saw were lingerie, silky nightgowns, cupless bras, and lace underwear. I took out the least offensive item, a solid black knee-length nightgown, and changed into it. I didn’t know what my mother was thinking when she packed these things for me. I crossed my arms around my stomach, feeling self-conscious as I headed out to the balcony. I quickly stepped into the jacuzzi. The faster I was in the water, the less time Lorenzo had to stare at me in this black piece. He waited until I was fully seated in the tub before he slowly started approaching. Consciously, I wrapped my arms around my body so he would see less. “I remember the first time I saw you at your father's house opening ceremony. Since then…” Lorenzo paused and picked up a glass, which he filled with another round of champagne. This time, he handed it over to me. “Here, have a drink, and don’t say no.” His expression reminded me that he wasn’t joking this time. I
Neil's POV It had been almost a week and I had been mourning him, loathing myself for his demise. I felt empty, weak, and powerless as he was cremated six feet into the ground. I would bear this scar, this burden all my life, as the one who killed his brother. I couldn’t accept any other truth, knowing this would not have happened if I had paid attention to what my mother said a few weeks ago about my brother's disappearance. I should have gone in search of him; maybe I could have saved him earlier. But now, there seemed to be more to this than just losing him to the monster I was yet to understand. A monster that operated with shadows and was as dangerous as hell, capable of possessing the soul of a werewolf. I had to dig into this. Who were the 'they' that were coming? And why do they want to wipe out all werewolves? His voice echoed in my mind. A thin line of tears rushed down my face as I stared at his grave. Every werewolf in the Castros pack had come to pay their last respe
Neil's POV "Scythe!!!" I screamed in fury with everything in me. The hairs on my body rose in anger. My blood boiled, and the only way to stop this was to take Scythe down and make him pay for everything he put the werewolves of Castros pack through. "Scythe!!" I roared again. Heira paced angrily within me, and I knew any moment now, he would push out. The air suddenly went still, and an ominous silence fell among the ruins of the pack. Cold air rushed in from all sides, and strange shadows began to take shape around me. Scythe's power had increased since the last time. More larger and thicker lumps of shadow penetrated the air now, cloning themselves... more than one Scythe stood before me, ready to attack. "You called me." His voice was unusually deep and menacing, resonating like thunder in the environment. But I cared less; he could display an array of powers as much as he wanted, but he was going down today. With gritted teeth, I pounced forward on both feet, claws pointed at
Neil's POV One blissful, amazing night with my mate had left us both curled into each other's arms. Her head rested on my chest while she slept. She was my mate, my Luna with a wolf spirit—a healer. Not only was she a werewolf now, but she was also a healer. In that moment, I wished I had turned her earlier; Cole wouldn’t have had to endure all of those struggles in Europe to save me from silver. I felt proud of her. She had awakened her wolf successfully after one bite, which was very rare, and she had been blessed by the moon with such a unique power. I suspected that was just the tip of the power of blue wolves. As I lost myself in thoughts about what it would feel like to finally present my mate to the Castros pack, a voice suddenly screamed into my head through the mind-link. "Alpha! Where are you? The pack is in chaos!" It was my beta, Damien. "What’s wrong? What’s happening?" "It’s the shadow assassin! The pack members are disbanding in fear. So many werewolves have been k
Amelia's POV She was very focused and carefully navigated the woods as if she had been there before. Also, she was very fast; I could tell by the amount of wind brushing past her fur. Neil was behind us... wait, not Neil. It was his wolf! I chuckled in excitement. It was getting interesting. 'Lydia is beautiful', I heard Neil in my head as our wolves sprinted through the undergrowth. 'She's charming and very interesting. I love her already', I replied as I laughed. We were beating Neil and his wolf in the race. They couldn't keep up with us; Lydia was extremely fast. 'And she's unusually fast! Damn! Heira is struggling to match her speed!' Neil complained, and I took pride in that. I heard his wolf purr as he increased his speed. 'Catch me if you can,' Lydia screamed in excitement. We pounced ahead. But Lydia suddenly paused and turned to Heira. 'Okay, I think we have arrived at the end of the game.' I stretched my eyes and saw it was a dead end—a cliff. Heira swiftly transfor
Amelia's POV My whole body quaked even while Neil was licking the wound. His hot tongue flapped the bite marks, but that didn't stop the storm I felt within. He pulled away and looked into my face. I thought he was going to let go because he didn't know when my wolf would arrive, but instead, his lips found mine. My lips quivered in his mouth as he kissed me, lips first until our tongues almost set on fire. I could feel my thigh getting slicker as our mouths continued dancing together. Yet, my whole body was on fire; starting from the mark Neil had just placed on my neck to the very pit of my stomach. I began to feel so strange, so alien to my body. I gasped into Neil's mouth while he kissed me because the pains were almost choking me, but Neil's powerful arms held me steadily against his chest as he tried to ease the pains. My fingers dug into his back as it felt as if I could merge with his body. The pains throbbed in my head and pounded in my chest, as if my body would explode an
Amelia's POVI know my name is Amelia. I remember that face; the face I wake up with every morning, right on my mind. I remember his name; he is Neil Morreti. All the memories we ever shared all rushed into my mind; including the sex in the pool at Arkans. I remember he had saved me but I can't remember what happened that he needed to save me in Arkans. I remember that monster, Logan; he cut off my pinky and promised he would send it to Neil, which he did.One distinct thing I also remember is that Neil is not an ordinary human. He has a wolf; a dark haired wolf that is so strong.I couldn't stop myself from imagining what it felt like having a wolf that you could call on, even when you are in danger. I would speak to her, hear her thoughts and opinions and not a soul will know what we are discussing. I would make her my gist mate. I would smell things from afar, hear any little sound like I wish to, become terribly fast and my punch will be strong enough to break enough bones. That f
Amelia's POV I knew my name is Amelia. I remembered that face; the face I woke up with every morning, right on my mind. I remembered his name; he was Neil Morreti. All the memories we had ever shared rushed into my mind, including the moment in the pool at Arkans. I remembered he had saved me, but I couldn't recall what had happened that required his intervention. I remembered that monster, Logan; he had cut off my pinky and promised to send it to Neil, which he did. One distinct thing I also remembered was that Neil was not an ordinary human. He had a wolf; a dark-haired wolf that was incredibly strong. I couldn't stop myself from imagining what it felt like to have a wolf that I could call on, even when I was in danger. I would speak to her, hear her thoughts and opinions, and not a soul would know what we were discussing. I would make her my confidante. I would smell things from afar, hear any little sound I wished to, become incredibly fast, and my punch would be strong enough t
Neil's POV I was shocked to the bone marrow. Not once did Amelia stir as her eyes continued piercing mine inquisitively. "Is he the bad guy who cut my finger with a knife and laughed while I cried?" She raised her stubby pinky to me and pouted her lips, ready to tear up. I was short of words. She remembered Logan, Karl, me, and every other thing except Lorenzo. She didn't remember the man who was ruthless and cruel to her in the name of marriage. She didn't remember how he killed her parents or how he led her to the altar and proceeded with the marriage vows with her. She didn't remember the mafia boss of Chicago, the one who married her for an heir and made life hard for her. She didn't remember any of it. But seeing this situation, I was going to seize it. I would make sure she never remembered those horrible nightmares with Lorenzo. She would never remember that Lorenzo ever existed, that he ever lived in her life. And that he was her husband. I would make sure those nightmares
Neil's POV The first thing I did was get Amelia out of that hospital and take her with me back to America. Cole booked us a room in a hotel to stay and watch out for the time being. The situation in America about being the miscreant who took the lives of hundreds of workers in a refinery explosion hadn't been laid to rest yet. But I was not that bothered about it; now I had all that I wanted, an undisturbed life with my mate. It was late by the time we arrived in America. Amelia had been sleeping on my shoulder all through the flight. She looked so weak and sick. The kind that moved me to pity, but it wasn't pity speaking. I was not pitying my mate. I was deeply concerned about her condition and if Neil Morreti would survive if he lost her. I would become a shadow of myself, and I might not be what anyone expected me to be anymore—just a loner who had lost control of his emotions and his whole self. I let her freshen up alone and treat herself to a nice meal. I took her to watch the
