"Uh...no. Greetings," She dropped her gaze.
The young man flashed a thin smile as he looked down from the balcony and saw the Alpha walking away. He fixed the puzzle instantly.
"I see. You are one of my brother's admirers, are you not?"
Sheera's jaw dropped slightly with surprise. He was the Alpha's brother?!
The Alpha had two stepbrothers. Sheela was certain the one in front of her was Malkar.
"Greetings, my prince." Her head went lower.
He passed a scrutinizing stare. "You didn't know who I was initially. And... I do not think I have seen this face around here. Who are you?"
Sheera bristled under his scrutiny. An unpleasant chill snaked down her spine. There was something about Malkar, something dark and unsettling that lurked beneath the surface of his youthful charm.
"I am...I am actually new here. My name is Sheera."
"Hold on!" He clicked his fingers. "I have definitely heard of you! The Alpha's toy. Am I correct?"
She didn't respond. How many others knew of her? And was that all she was known for? The Alpha's toy?
"Well..." he went closer. "You can call me Malkar. And... I must say you're too good to be a toy. What do you say about having tea with me?"
Sheera's heart made a thud. She lifted her head and saw two maids coming before her. They looked at her suspiciously, greeted the prince when they got to where he was before walking away.
"I appreciate the gesture. But I have to go now. Thank you." She bowed her head and ran off as quickly as she could, not wanting to hear any more from him.
.....
Sheera hadn't gone too far when she met another maiden who seemed to stand in her way.
She reined in her haste, forcing her hurried steps to slow to a measured walk when she noticed the maiden was still in her path, . The only thing that kept her at ease was the welcoming smile she had on her face.
"Wise were you to to avoid him. Prince Malkar can be very cunning," She said at last, stepping out of the way.
Sheera regarded her without knowing what response to give. She didn't want to say anything that'd get her into trouble.
The maiden noticed Sheera's unease. "I was asked to bring this to your room. I'm Tabitha, by the way." She smiled.
Oh...food at last.
"Thank you," Sheera bobbed.
Joining the lady, they started towards her room.
"I take it your stay in the Fortress hasn't been too pleasant." Tabitha said as they walked.
"Why would your think that?" Sheera quirked a brow.
"Isn't it obvious? Who would be happy to be here as a toy?" She scoffed. "But I get it, tho. It's the Alpha we're talking about. Not everyone gets the privilege to be touched by him. You're lucky. Only difference is - it gets worst when he's through with you and sends you back to your place. You might have a hard time finding a partner."
Anguish ripped through Sheera's soul. It wasn't until Tabitha saw the glum look on her face that she realized she may have spoken out of point.
"Oh, my! By the hunts, I'm so sorry. I am so careless with words." She seemed genuinely sorry.
Sheera managed a faint smile. "It's fine."
A lull fell between them for a brief moment.
"You know, you might just become lucky and find your mate. It'll make everything easy for you." Tabitha continued the conversation.
Sheera nearly rolled her eyes at that.
"I don't think it's possible." She scoffed.
Centuries ago, after the great war, the wolves were cursed with the loss of their mate's scent. They couldn't tell their mates from the other wolves, making every one of them to seem the same. As a result, the wolves only got mated to who they chose and were attracted to. Only a very very few could still find their mates. In those cases, it was considered a miracle.
"You can't be so sure. Some people are born lucky." Tabitha shrugged.
If Sheera had been anything, it was unlucky. Her father's history with the late Alpha had put her family through a lot, they had to be their own friends. The only time Sheera got attention from people was when men 'lusted' after her which was very common.
It was very rare for any man she came across to go by without lusting after. She couldn't explain nor comprehend why they seemed to be so attracted to her beauty. While her sister always teased her saying she was blessed, Sheera felt it was a curse.
"Did you witness the execution yesterday?" Tabitha asked.
She seemed to be one cheerful soul.
Sheera nodded, the pain and pity she had felt for the lady crawling into her head.
"Ugh! I couldn't watch it. I wonder how all those people were able to stand it at all." Tabitha spoke as if the words themselves were a foul potion she had to swallow.
Sheera became curious.
"How was she caught? Did someone rat out on her?" She questioned.
"Not at all. Ratting out on a witch is almost never needed - not when we have Zandov."
Sheera's pulse quickened on hearing that name. She couldn't tell why.
"You've heard of him, right? The famous witch hunter and executioner. He grew up hating witches that he dedicated his whole life to executing them. I don't even know how he does it, but the moment a witch is around, he senses it and goes after them. He always isolates himself in his private hut and only comes out when he's on a mission." Tabitha explained.
Zandov was a name everyone knew - the witch hunter with one of the darkest hearts.
"He is the reason a lot of people is scared of harbouring a witch. Because the moment he finds a witch, he kills whoever was found with them." Tabitha added.
"I see." Sheera simply mumbled.
They reached her room where Tabitha set the tray down on a stool. "Thank you, Tabitha." Sheera smiled. "Oh. It's nothing. If you need anything, you can just check me out in the maids quarters." She replied and headed for the door, but suddenly stopped in front of it. "By the way, you are so beautiful," Her eyes crinkled at the corners as she said. Sheera's heart warmed up. She dipped her head, and finally, Tabitha left the room. ***†*†Sheera spent the rest of the day alone in her room. For hours, she remained in bed, tossing and wondering if her life would remain so boring. How much she missed her family! She missed the mornings when she went hunting with her mother and sister. She missed fighting and making up with Naya. What she wouldn't do to get back to them. But this was probably for the best. At least, Naya wouldn't have to suffer. It was almost evening when she decided to go for another stroll. She felt imprisoned being in the room alone. As she walked, she considered the
Shallow gasps hitched in Sheera's throat as her terrified eyes locked on the Alpha. Just that morning, she had admired him when she saw him from afar. She had no idea it'd be so fearful getting to see him from close proximity. The glint of the sword in his hand, still wet with the man's blood, churned her stomach. Revulsion threatened to overwhelm her, but fear held it in check. She stumbled back a trembling step, punctuated by the erratic tremor of her lips."Kalaril, who is she?" Keegan asked, his impassive gaze on her."I have no idea, Alpha. I found her spying through the window." Kalaril answered.Dread coiled in Sheera's gut as Keegan drew closer until he was only three inches away from her. She began to wonder how she had admired him earlier on. The man before her had the looks of a god - literally. He was handsome, yet had an aura of danger that clung to him like a shadow. Instead of wanting to kiss his feet like she had desired that morning, she wanted to go far from him."
Alpha Keegan was discontented.Growing up, he'd been told by his father that some measures had been taken to avert the threat. A lot of people believed that. But Mortha seemed to think differently. "I had been hoping she was dead, Alpha. But I know what I saw - she is alive. The one that carries the blood."Keegan sighed. "You've said these words before, Mortha. Two years ago. Do you really believe she is alive?""Oh, I do! But I do not know where. We must make haste and carry out precautions to ensure she doesn't bring harm upon us."Seconds bled into a minute as Keegan regarded her words. "I doubt she is here in the North, tho. Zandov would have sensed her already." Kalaril chipped in. "That is correct. But it doesn't change the fact that whatever danger she causes will affect us all. We must act carefully, Alpha."Keegan nodded. "Thank you, Mortha. I shall take this up to the courtroom for discussion.""I pray only for success, Alpha." She dipped her head. Turning around, sh
For a week, Sheera didn't get to see the Alpha. Not even from a distance.Considering how she had doted on him the first time saw him, Sheera never thought she'd be so relieved to not see him.Although, she couldn't deny it was a little surprising that he hadn't bothered to see her at all, considering she had been brought all the way to the Fortress for him. It was just as if she didn't matter, or he didn't care enough. However, her fortune of not seeing him was finally about to end as that morning, she was in the room, nervously getting ready to go hunting with the royal family. It was the previous night when Tabitha had come up to her with the information, informing her she needed to be present.Sheera had tried asking if the Alpha had been the one that requested her presence, but Tabitha told her it wasn't the Alpha and didn't know who it was. Now, that morning, she was there in her room, wondering if she looked good enough. She didn't have much clothes. And unfortunately for her,
Eyes turned in Sheera's direction. Odessa creased her brows in surprise.Taking the deer, she never expected the low maiden would have the guts to defend herself. Sheera was panting as she stood before Keegan. "Forgive my intrusion, Alpha, but the game is mine, not hers."Odessa's emerald eyes widened in shock, a hand flying to her chest. "What... what are you babbling about?" she sputtered, voice laced with disbelief. "If it's your kill, how come I was the one carrying it?""That is because you reached it before I could. Then, you proclaimed your victory to the Alpha. I was too stunned speechless, unsure how to challenge you. But it is wrong to do this to me. I went through the labour of getting it. You shouldn't take the glory for it." Sheera expressed."By the hunt!" Odessa shrieked in another gasp. "How could you... How could you even think to accuse me in front of everyone? This is not my first successful hunt! Why would I steal from you?"She buried her face in her palms, and
For the first time since she was brought in, Keegan regarded her. He surveyed her with a detached intensity, his gaze lingering on her form like she was a curious artifact rather than a person.Still clutching the bloodstained knife, he moved with a predatory grace towards a rough-hewn table across the room. The dim torchlight cast flickering shadows that danced on the damp walls, adding to the oppressive atmosphere."How was your stay in the dungeon?" He casually asked like it was a place she was meant to be. Sheera clamped down tightly, the metallic tang of fear clinging to her tongue. Why was she even in his room? Was he going to slit her throat as well?"F... Forgive me, Alpha. I apologize for upsetting you earlier on." She managed to say. Keegan was backing her now. Taking up a strap of cloth from the table, he meticulously wiped off the blood stain from his blade, then started walking in Sheera's direction. A lump formed in Sheera's throat, and she swallowed it with a dry ras
"I am Sheera. I was uh..." she paused, realizing from his expression that he knew who she was already from her name. "Are you Prince Ulric?" She questioned. Ulric confirmed her thought with a nod. And quickly, she dipped her head in respect. Somehow, she'd known. Perhaps it was the air of nobility that clung to him, or the faint resemblance he bore to Prince Malkar. He seemed young, though, no more than a year or two her senior. And unlike Keegan and Malkar, there was a hint of warmth in his eyes. Ulric reached for another arrow, nocked it on the bowstring, aimed, and released. The arrow found its target with a satisfying thud. An amused chuckle warmed his voice. "Where did you learn archery?" He looked at Sheera again who smiled at the memories of her mother. "My mother is a hunter. So am I. We've been doing this our whole lives." A light dawned on Ulric, and he gave a sharp nod. The reason he was out there, shooting at made up targets was because he needed to clear his head
Sheera was a prisoner of her own terror. Even as night fell, cloaking the Fortress in its inky embrace, and she knew it was time to go the Alpha's chamber, she found it difficult moving her legs.the memory of what she had done sent a fresh wave of panic crashing over her. The image of the Keeper's lifeless form sprawled on the floor played on an endless loop in her mind.It was unreal for her to had behaved that way. So unreal for her to possess such strength and anger - one that was enough to defeat a Keeper, and...and kill him!She was haunted! It was her first kill as a wolf, and by the moon, the air seemed to stick in her throat. It was forbidden to take the life of another without reason. What if the Keeper's death is traced to her? What if they don't believe she had only been defending herself? How does she even explain herself being in his room? It was foolish of her to had followed him. Her breaths were shallow and quick as she struggled to pull herself together. She need
"Release her," his voice was low and taut as he gave the command. "Take her to Elke."He turned to Odessa, his gaze as cold and sharp as ice. "With me."Odessa swallowed hard, the fear of what awaited her eclipsing her rage at seeing Sheera set free. She hesitated but then hurried after him, her cheeks burning with shame under the watchful eyes of the gathered crowd.Once inside his room, Keegan moved with binding speed. He seized her throat, and with a force that knocked the breath out of her, he slammed her against the wall. The impact rattled through her bones, and a strangled gasp died in her throat, her eyes widening in shock and pain. His grip tightened, iron-hard fingers digging into her delicate skin. She struggled to breathe. Her lips parted, wanting to plead for his mercy, but no words escaped—only the faintest, pitiful wheeze."How dare you?" He gritted through clenched teeth, his face inches from hers. "How dare you do that to her?"Odessa wanted to defend herself, to remi
Her vision blurred with red, and she felt herself teetering on the edge of something dark and dangerous. She wasn't sure what she might do next if not for the sudden interruption. "Greetings, Mistress Odessa," the maid bowed in respect as the imposing figure of Odessa stormed in, flanked by several stern-faced Keepers.Only then did Sheera snap out of her illusion. She sucked in a painful breath as if emerging from deep waters. Good Hades! What was wrong with her!? What had she almost done!?She was breathing heavily, fear prickling her skin. Something wasn't right. The last time she'd felt that way was when that Keeper had tried to force himself on her months ago, in his room. Back then, she concluded she'd been triggered, but now, she didn't even know what to think anymore. She was so lost in her frantic thoughts that she didn't notice Odessa striding towards her, fury blazing in her eyes. She only snapped back to awareness when a sharp slap struck her cheek, sending her reeling
Otis led Zarek through the winding hall, the scent of damp stone and the faint aroma of meat wafting from the chamber ahead. As they approached, the murmur of low voices ceased. Otis pushed open the door, revealing a room and a table untouched food and goblets of wine. Albany Sebastian and Cyrus Rose on their feet as the two Alphas entered. When news of what had transpired during the Peace Treaty reached Zarek's ears, he sent a letter to Sebastian, seeking a team up. He couldn't see a more befitting partner than a man who was as hurt as he was. Their pleasantries were brief, their formalities clipped and hollow, before they shifted the conversation to what truly mattered. "I should have listened to Laycoan when he warned me not to go for the Peace Treaty," Sebastian began, his jaw tight with the bitterness of hindsight. "Now, he mocks me for my blindness, and I think I deserve it. Keegan took something very dear to me - my most precious possession. He never intended to make peac
Sheera was equally surprised when the Alpha took her to his chambers. She'd expected somewhere far worse, somewhere terrifying. As soon as she stepped into the room, her muscles twitched involuntarily. This room... Being away from it for so long made her realize it was her favourite place. It felt as if her lungs forgot to breath as her eyes darted around on their own. Everything was just like she remembered. The air was thick with his rugged, earthy scent, the very scent she's missed. She was lost, staring at the room and wasn't prepared for being hurled against the wall with such force that her head spun. Her eyes squeezed shut from the impact, and pain shot through her bones. When she opened them again, Keegan stood before her, towering over her like a dark tempest ready to consume her whole. His hand was clamped around her throat - unyielding and merciless. She closed her eyes again, the grunts of pain and protest stifled in her throat. She rekt the walls of her lungs constrict,
Keegan went towards her, his steps heavy. His aura was oppressive. "What were you looking at?" Sheera kept her head bowed, praying to the moon she wasn't the one he was referring to. But who was she deceiving? He stepped into her space and grabbed her jaw, forcing her to meet his gaze?"I asked you a question," he hissed through gritted teeth. "Have you no idea you're not supposed to look me in the eyes?"The raw fear in Sheera was palpable. She wondered if he could feel her trembling as he held her jaw, if he could hear how hard she swallowed. She tried to speak, but the words died in her throat."I'm... I'm sorry..." She finally managed to stammer. She didn't know what else to say. She was terrified. For a while, Keegan glared at her. His face was twisted maliciously, his nails biting into her skin. He thought of so many words he could hurt her. So many ways he could make her weep. She had no right to be in his head. With a rough shove, he released her, sending her stumbling ba
It was late at night when Malkar knocked on Thessaly's door. The Mistress opened up and was taken aback to see the Prince standing before her. She was dressed in her night robe, a sheer, transparent garment that left little to the imagination."Prince Malkar?"He chuckled lightly. "Come on, let me in."He attempted to step inside, but Thessaly stood firm, barring his path."I'm sorry, but it's late. Do you need something?"Malkar looked around, uncomfortably. "Come on, Thess, someone might see us. Let me in."Worried that indeed, someone might see them and misconstrue the situation, she allowed him into the room. However, she stopped him at the door, refusing to let him venture further inside."What is it?" She demanded, her voice husky.Malkar drew a long breath, taking in ev
Odessa's moans filled the room as she straddled Keegan, her hips moving fervently, her skin slick with sweat. Her breath came in ragged bursts as she bounced atop him, her nipples grazing his chest with every rise and fall. Keegan's hands rested loosely around her waist, his eyes closed. He was seated in his chair, a single bead of sweat trickling down his neck. It was supposed to feel incredible. Odessa was giving it her all, but even her guts told her something wasn't right with Keegan, as it had been ever since he regained consciousness. This is the third time they have been intimate since then, and the last two times, his mind seemed distant, and in the end, he didn't finish on her. Now, he sat there, his eyes closed. It looked like he was enjoying it this time around. Odessa desperately hoped he was. But she was far from the truth. As Keegan closed his eyes, all he could see were the memories of a certain lady on him, a lady with long black hair, vivid blue eyes, and a scent
A WEEK LATER.It was midday, and the sun hung heavy in the sky, casting a warm hue over the farmlands of Howling Ridge. Sheera, along with Tabitha and a lot of workers were working on some of the farmlands.Howling Ridge was known for it's abundant lands, and this very farm was one of the prized estates of Keegan's ownership. The rich, expensive field stretched out as far as the eye could see. It wasn't the first time Sheera was working on the farms, but never had they received guests while at work. That day was different. Six carriages arrived. Sheera couldn't breath as the riders drew nearer, her heart racing with an overwhelming mixture of fear and longing when she recognized the figure at the head of the procession. It was Keegan, his tall form regal atop his favorite black horse. What was he doing there? His golden hair caught the sunlight, gleaming like molten metal, and his cold silver eyes glanced the lands as if weighing it's worth with each glance. Sheera
It was a long day for Keegan. It was nightfall by time he retired to his chambers in the company of Kalaril. They spoke idly of the day's events as Keegan removed his heavy regalia. They shared a drink afterwards, the conversation drifting from trivial court matters to lighthearted jokes. But Kalaril's next words shifted the tone abruptly. "Don't you think you should let her go?" Kalaril asked.Keegan took a deep drink from his cup, not bothering to look at Kalaril until he had emptied it. "Who?""Sheera." He clarified. "The mate bond is gone now, and I understand that you want to punish her for hurting you. But don't you think it's more painful seeing her around? I was thinking it'd be best to let her go."Keegan's nose twitched in irritation. He poured more wine, the liquid swirling in the goblet like his unspoken anger. "No." His voice was hard. "I don't want her gone, Kalaril. Not yet. I still want her to suffer.""You used to like her. Love, maybe. Is it really necessary to k
