**Elliott POV**
“Last chance to change our minds and just skip this thing all together,” I half joked as we took the exit to River bed pack. God, I hated these parties— almost as much as I disliked visiting this pack. Alpha Victor was a flashy, ridiculous man who was pretty clearly compensating for something in my opinion and his children were even worse.
“Don’t be like that, you know we have that treaty meeting and we can’t miss it,” My beta, Jasper chastised. I saw his blue-green eyes glaring at me in the rear view mirror as if he was assessing whether I’d leap from the car to escape or not.
“It was just a joke, ‘dad’.” I teased, putting air quotes around “dad” just to mess with him further. My beta was great at his job and a fantastic friend—brother, even— but good goddess did the guy need to loosen up a bit.
“Haha! ‘Dad’! Hey ‘dad’ can we stop at a gas station and get some snacks?” Cameron, my gamma, snickered. His brown eyes widened and he blew his long blonde hair out of his face feigning a look of childlike innocence. In contrast to Jasper, Cameron was all jokes. The two of them cancelled each other out quite nicely. Even their appearances couldn’t be more different. Where Cameron looked like a hippie straight out of the 70’s, Jasper looked every bit the clean cut militant man that anyone who didn’t actually know him would assume him to be.
“Oh no,” Jasper grabbed the bridge of his nose. “Can you two not make that a thing? I don’t want that to be a thing. You’ll make the drive back utter misery just like last time when you guys spoke in those obnoxious southern accents.”
“But ‘dad’ we were visiting a pack in Dallas, we had to make sure we would acclimate to the culture, we wouldn’t have wanted to stick out. Lord knows that would’ve been so embarrassing, I do declare!” Cameron chirped in the same accent he’d used that whole 12 hour trip. Jasper looked like he was seriously considering throwing him from the car.
“Alright, Cam. Let’s get a game plan going. We’re twenty minutes out.” I was already regretting having to ruin the fun we were having at Jasper’s expense, but we needed to know how to get through the next 24 hours and get home. “We know we’re not renewing the treaty with Red River because it’s not beneficial for us in any way with an army as small as theirs. We also know that alpha Victor’s daughter is— and i cannot stress this enough— the most annoying and desperate woman alive and she’s been nonstop coming after me since the last event at red river. So I propose we stay as close together as we can during the event and you both come with me to the alpha meeting the next morning. We reject Amelia at the party, we reject Victor at the meeting, we get out of there as soon as we can with as little complications as possible. Sound good, gentlemen?”
“Yep!” They both answer practically at the same time.
“But what if your mate is part of this rinky dink pack?” Cameron blurted out, earning him a punch in the arm from Jasper.
“I’m 24. If I haven’t found my mate yet I highly doubt she’ll be part of this pathetic pack.” I snapped perhaps a bit too sharply. Mates were a sore subject for me. For our kind, it was rare to move far into your twenties without finding your mate and watching everyone around me successfully find theirs was getting a bit frustrating. Jasper had found his mate 3 years ago when he was 19 and I was kind of expecting roughly the same time line. I was beginning to think maybe it just wasn’t in the cards for me.
“Well, my mate could be here,” Cameron mumbled. He was 23 and beginning to lose hope along with me. As positive as he tried to be all the time, Cameron was worried that his mate may never come too.
“Maybe she is.” I reached up and clapped my gamma on the shoulder. “And if she is, we’ll find a way to make sure she comes home with us. I know this pack has a reputation. She’ll probably be happy to leave!” I attempted to cheer him up and he smiled and nodded his head.
“Just sniff the air really hard. That’ll help you find her faster.” Jasper said solemnly. Cameron nodded enthusiastically, far too trusting of Jasper and his almost unreadable facial expressions and I did my best not to laugh out loud knowing that this was about to be hilarious.
Within a few minutes, we were at the albeit rundown gates of Red river and coming up the path to the pack house. I saw Cameron try to subtly roll his window down and turn his head, his shoulders giving away the gigantic sniff he’d taken as we began down the dirt path to the albeit rundown packhouse. It always made me wonder what kind of alpha would allow their packlands to look this shabby and still invite neighboring packs over, especially when hoping to negotiate a merger. The landscaping looked old and overgrown, the path was uneven and desperately needed to be paved or at least filled in, and one look at the packhouse had me wishing we could’ve made hotel arrangements so we didn’t have to stay here. If only Alpha Victor hadn’t aggressively insisted we stay the night to the point where there was no polite way to decline.
Old, crappy looking patrol cars with varying degrees of damage lined sides of the packhouse. I was taken aback that an alpha wouldn’t make it a high priority to equip his warriors with at least updated equipment. How were they supposed to defend the pack or get to the borders in a timely manner in these junkers? I’d seen better vehicles in front of the human motels on the way here. My dad had always taught me that appearances aren’t everything, but a packhouse’s state reflects the state of the pack, and especially the state of the alpha running things. If my father had come here with us he would’ve felt disgrace on the behalf of the alphas before Victor.
We were received at the front by none other than the alpha’s daughter, Amelia. Her bleach blonde hair was straightened down to her shoulders. Her bleached white teeth were showing possibly too much in an aggressive smile as she squealed and ran towards us. Oh no.
“Elliott!!! You’re here!!!! I’ve been waiting all day for you! Cutting it close to the party, aren’t we silly?” She hugged me as tightly as she could and lingered, almost as if expecting a kiss. I couldn’t help but notice that with her obviously colored blue contacts, she looked like a real live Barbie and not exactly in a good way. At least Barbie was smart enough to be a doctor or something, Amelia openly behaved as though her only aspirations were to be a ranked wolf’s arm candy one day and honestly I could only hope it was an act. If my sister were running around acting as Amelia did, I could only imagine how difficult it would be to handle ourselves professionally around official visitors. She was completely undermining her father’s ability to be taken seriously.
“It’s only 4, we have 3 hours which is hardly too little time to put on a suit.” I replied dryly. Amelia giggled as if I was joking, and led us into the pack house. It was clean but kind of dated on the inside and overall not very impressive for a pack that boasted the fortune in assets that alpha Victor claimed to have. The obvious fact was this pack was cash poor and they were trying to advertise themselves as otherwise, an indication of how trustworthy and above board all of their treaties and potential business ventures would be.
“I managed to get the three of you some rooms on the alpha floor right down the hall from yours truly!” Amelia paused, turning around to touch her chest in some strange attempt to “dazzle” me by drawing attention to the low neckline of her hot pink shirt. As she turned to continue walking, she made sure to angle herself directly in front of me as she led us to our rooms so as to guarantee i had a view of her ass. It was less impressive than she probably thought it was, and I didn’t find someone so obviously attempting to seduce me as alluring as she assumed.
“Here we are!” She opened the door to reveal just one room that seemed to be for all three of us. Guess we should’ve taken it with a grain of salt when she said “rooms” as in PLURAL. I was hardly a snob but the fact was these lodgings were pathetic for a visiting ranked team. When dealing with potential allies or treaty renewals, which both applied here, a pack should be trying their best to show off their amenities and accommodations. They should be putting their best foot forward, not shoving three full grown men into a tiny room. There was one queen sized bed and one full bed and to be honest the bedding looked like the kind you’d find in a cheap motel. The crowd they were accepting tonight was pretty small with closer visiting alphas returning to their own pack houses at the end of the night, so I was surprised to see there weren’t separate rooms prepared for my beta and gamma, especially considering this pack’s beta had no family and there hadn’t been a gamma since around my father’s time as alpha, so both floors would be mostly if not completely empty. Why not utilize those rooms, especially after the insistence of us staying here? It just didn’t add up to me.
“Thank you, Amelia.” I offered her a curt smile and shut the door.
“Dude, she’s gonna be hard to dodge all night.” Cameron snorted.
“Yeah, tell me about it,” I ran a hand through my hair. What had I gotten myself into here?
“Let’s all grab a quick shower and go over our intel on River bed and then we’ll get ready for the party.” Jasper said, getting his things together to hop in first.
I thanked the moon goddess that when I entered the pack house, I didn’t smell any sign of my mate on the ranked floors. Having to be connected to this pack in any way shape or form would’ve been a literal nightmare.
**Amelia POV**
Elliott was finally here and my plan was well underway. I’d managed to intercept them and make sure he and his friends were staying on my floor in the crappiest room we had so he would be sure to want more comfortable lodgings and I’d be all too happy to offer up my room for us to share. If he didn’t mate and mark me tonight or at least start seeing me on a more regular basis, I was one drunken hookup away from a shotgun wedding. That was a last resort, though. I didn’t much care for kids. I knew I’d eventually have to provide the pack with their future alphas, but my hope was to wait until I’d spent my 20’s having fun, and even then I’d definitely be going with a live in nanny for most of their needs, just like my mom did with Andrew and I. Either way, I would be Luna to one of the most powerful packs in the area.
I ran a hand down my dress for the evening. It was deep crimson red and it hugged my body perfectly, showing off my slender figure and it had a slit that went dangerously high which displayed one of my shapely legs. A nice preview for my future chosen mate. I’d turned 18 last month and seen Elliott when he’d come to visit his brother at training school and I was there with my parents as my brother was being picked up after the headmaster had decided to expel his dumb ass, so I knew Elliott wasn’t my actual mate, but that didn’t really matter. There was no way he’d reject me in this dress. It was totally worth stealing my dad’s credit card to get.
Soon my hair and makeup team would be here and I’d be in full glam. Elliott wouldn’t even know what hit him, but I knew he would finally see me as the poised and classy Luna I was born to be. My father would be absolutely pissed I paid for hair and makeup after he specifically said no but it was all for the cause. I wasn’t stupid, I knew we were close to flat broke but once I became Elliott’s Luna, he’d be all too happy to help daddy get back on his feet.
I smiled at myself in my vanity mirror just imagining how jealous all of my friends would be at my Luna ceremony. I’d never been to Silver moon’s pack grounds but I heard they were gorgeous. Mountainous, giant lake, everything a Luna ceremony needs for a classy backdrop. I could almost see the whole thing unfolding in front of me.
In just a few short hours I’d be on my way to the life of my dreams one way or another, and absolutely nothing was going to stop me.
**Jade POV**I woke up to a searing pain on my neck and wrists. Silver. I knew instantly that Victor had chained me to the post out back to most likely finish me off later. Wow, I’d really made a mess of things. I knew I needed to escape soon or die and that I’d just brought my own demise—the one that Astrid specifically warned me about— closer with my big mouth. And to make matters worse I’d done nothing to help the other omegas. I wanted to cry but I just couldn’t find the energy.I felt the cold concrete underneath me, wishing with all I had that I’d at least been given a blanket. I tried to move but as soon as I tried to sit up, I shrieked in pain. I’d almost forgotten about the extent of my beating. I could feel my lip swelling and I knew there had to be extensive bruising and blood all over my face. I managed to scoot myself closer to the post and leaned against it. It was cold and uncomfortable, but at least I wasn’t laying on the ground like a dead animal.I heard music not to
**Jade POV**I woke up to this irritating beeping sound but I was very aware that I was more comfortable than I’d ever been in my life. That is, until I tried to sit up and then I was suddenly acutely aware of all I’d been through in the last— wait how long have I been unconscious? Or did they kill me already? That didn’t make sense, I wouldn’t be feeling pain if I were dead. What was happening?I hesitantly opened my eyes to see a bunch of machines all around me. What in the world was this? Is this where they were going to kill me? Would they be torturing me before they took me out? Tears started to run down my face as I realized I wasn’t strong enough to escape even though I was somehow unchained. Maybe they counted on that, maybe they knew there was no way I could defend myself and that’s why they didn’t bother to restrain me. But why put me in this comfortable bed if the plan was just to kill me after?Suddenly, I felt the sensation of someone touching me but it wasn’t like a pers
**Jade POV**Within about 5 minutes, the blonde man and another huge and intimidating man with short, dark hair came into the room. I knew they were probably Elliott’s beta and gamma, but the dark haired man seemed almost higher rank than that. He both terrified and mesmerized me with his stature alone. This man had to be at least 7 feet tall. “We’ve been given an hour to get off the property. Are our bags packed?” Elliott asked them.“Yes, alpha. I have the car all loaded up and I’ve already asked the doctor if he’d like to bring his family to join our pack. They’re almost finished packing their car as well.” The dark haired man answered.“Perfect. Jade, do you have any belongings you would like to take with you?” Elliott turned his beautiful gaze to me and I was suddenly filled with nervous energy. Would I really be escaping to what would hopefully be a hopefully better life with this man?“No, I don’t really have anything besides a few clothing items,” I started before realizatio
**Jade POV**I opened my eyes to see Emma and Elliott standing over me and I was excited to find that it wasn’t a dream, this was all really happening. Elliott’s dark eyes seemed to twinkle as he looked into mine. I couldn’t help but smile shyly at him. “Sorry to wake you, love, but we’ve been on the road a little over an hour and a half and we figured now would be a good time to stop for lunch since you haven’t eaten and poor Emma missed breakfast because of us.” Emma smiled hearing her name acknowledged and I realized that by falling asleep I’d left her alone with a car full of strangers. I hoped she wasn’t too upset with me. “Elliott thought you might want to change before we go in,” Emma said cheerfully and held up clothes for me. “I’ll hold up this blanket so no one can see you guys.” Elliott said, turning around behind Emma and spreading a large fluffy blanket as far as his arms could stretch, forming a semi circle of coverage for us, the open door to the car covering us on t
**Victor POV**Stupid piece of shit alpha of silver moon. That brat was half my age and acted as if he were some sort of gift to our entire species and therefore better than me. I hated how my wolf surrendered so easily to him. He’d always done that even when his equally pompous and annoying father was the one visiting here. I could see this kid would be a bigger pain in my ass than his holier than thou father. Who did he think he was to be reporting me over to the elders? Under what authority was he allowed to control my pack? I’d never gone to his packlands and treated him with such utter disrespect.“It’s not his fault we’re not of true alpha blood. Your father took over this pack by force, he was never meant to rule and neither are we. We should surrender the title to him and cut our losses” my wolf, Kai lectured in my head. No one except for us, my father, and a few elderly members of the pack who were there for the takeover were aware of that. My father was once the Gamma of th
**Jade POV**The next several hours were filled with laughter, music, and “I spy”, a game Cameron claimed was a road trip right of passage. I had to admit I didn’t quite get what made it interesting, but I did like Jasper’s comments as he observed his friend choosing one obscure thing after another and we’d usually pass them before anyone managed to guess correctly. We’d spent the afternoon in the car asking each other random questions every time one of us had one pop into our heads. At first it was just Elliott and I but then Cameron insisted that they all join in because in his words “we’ll all be working together to run a pack, so we’ll need some pretty good dirt on each other to get the job done”. We’d covered a good amount of basic information, I learned that Elliott’s parents are still alive and very nice people. He has a sister who’s about my age, and a brother a few years older in training school for ranked members for a few more weeks. He’s been an alpha for 5 years, and his
**Elliott POV**My mom touched Jade’s face and as I watched their hushed conversation, I felt my dad clap me on the shoulder. “Well, it’s easy to tell but I thought I’d say it anyway— we love your mate!” We both chuckled and my heart swelled seeing my parents embrace Jade so quickly. Although technically, they’d had the whole beginning of her life to warm up to her.As I was smiling and taking it all in, I realized my mom and I had been making eye contact through almost the entire long, tight hug she was giving to Jade. Everyone around us seemed frozen in time and all I wanted to do was have some alone time with Jade to process the last few days and start getting to know each other better. I felt this sudden urge to scoop her up, take her to my room, and lock ourselves away from anything but each other. I was realizing how close I came to never even knowing my true mate because we’d thought she’d been dead all these years, and the protective instincts that had been laying dormant in m
**Jade POV** Elliott dropped my hand as we finally reached his door. I was already overwhelmed by the sheer size of this place. Every inch of it was beautifully decorated, like I’d jumped into a fairy tale and was now inside the book with Prince Charming forever— at least I could only hope it’d be forever. He turned the small metal knob and the door swung open with a soft and charming creak. He gestured for me to walk ahead of him and I offered him a nervous smile as I walked through.I couldn’t believe what was in front of me. The ceilings were dark wood and tall coming together in a point at the top. In the center of the back wall was the biggest bed I’ve ever seen in my life piled high with fluffy pillows and dark green linens. A fireplace split the room in half with a large tv screen mounted to the top facing the bed. “Holy shit,” I said, spinning around to look at Elliott. This had to be a prank. There was no way this was real. “This is your room?” I asked almost as a rhetoric
**Emma POV**I had to get out of there. I didn’t know what else to do besides bolt. Taking a moment to silently thank Elliott for giving me my own space just down the hall, I crashed through the door and locked it. What had just happened? My heart was racing; I didn’t know how to make it slow or calm down. I’d looked into a pair of striking green eyes and now everything was somehow different.“He’s our mate, you dumb bitch!” Leona, my wolf who had even less qualms about telling it like it was than I did, purred in my mind.“I don’t think he’s out mate, he’s too hot,” I confessed out loud. It was just her and I, why have a silent conversation? Especially when I was getting the sense that I’d need to vent my frustration through yelling.“We’re hot!” Leona retorted, offended I didn’t agree.“Not as hot as him, or as Jade or Cleo!” I yelled back. “He met them first, he’s probably so disappointed he didn’t get one of them! He’s going to reject us.”“I think you’re wrong. You didn’t even gi
**Jade POV**Jasper nodded slowly; his eyes still illuminated in an eerie way. “We hid you and ran to help Mom and dad. We thought we’d be able to get back to you. We thought wrong. Jasper didn’t know what to do, he was so afraid. I was still dormant, but I managed to find the strength to take over and carry him through.” He was looking stoically only at me as if we were the only two people in the world. I could sense Cleo’s eyes on me, could hear her sobs, but somehow, I couldn’t break this eye contact.“We were on our way up to the alpha floor when we saw Laurel. We grabbed her and told her exactly where to find you. She tried to make us leave with her, but we ran away before she could catch us. We had to help mom and dad. We couldn’t just leave them to die.” He sounded robotic, devoid of emotion, but I knew Axel had come forward to protect Jasper from having to speak through this new memory. While Axel seemed calm and in control, I could only conclude that Jasper was everything but
**Jade POV**“What do you mean? She was the beta’s daughter?” I asked Logan as more of a question than a statement, but I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt he was telling the truth. It was like it had all hit me at once.Chasing each other through the hallways of the packhouse, making flower crowns with our mothers in the forests, playing princesses, sleepovers, hide and go seek when Elliott and his family would visit, her having a silly crush on my older cousin when he moved to the—I looked to Elliott whose eyes looked almost the size of golf balls. What was he thinking? Was he remembering things too?“I think he’s telling the truth.” Elliott linked me and I nodded slowly, trying to refocus.“Well, let’s move past that part for now.” Elliott offered diplomatically. “We’ll circle back at the end of the story.”“Okay,” Logan sniffed, looking positively bereaved as if he were the one who’d done all of this and not his father. “Well, I looked for Emma and her parents, but all I saw was—wa
**Cameron POV**I took Emma with me down the hall and we got onto the elevator. I snuck a glance at her to see how she was handling all of this, and she definitely looked shell-shocked. “I sent Sebastian to tell William and Vera what’s going on, so they can communicate our regrets to Juliet that we’ll all more than likely miss brunch and have to meet her at dinner.” I tried to ease her into the nitty-grity of the situation. To my surprise, Emma nodded and turned to me. “Okay, what’s happened and what do you need me to do?” she asked, all business. My heart swelled with pride at the seriousness with which she took the situation before she even knew what it was. A true leader.I’d told her about our search of Mystic Moon’s grounds and our run-in with some warriors and the stranger who appeared to be escaping. I’d confessed I’d only gotten the abridged secondhand version from Elliott about what was going on there because the most important thing for me to focus on was the prisoner. I tol
“I’m sorry, I lost my train of thought. I should probably start from the beginning of what I know, that’s why I’m here.” He smiled sheepishly at me, almost as if he were trying to read my face to see if I’d lumped him in with his father or if there was any level of trust. I decided to be open-minded and give him a chance to explain himself.Elliott gestured for Logan to come and sit in the sitting area Emma and I had just been in the day before talking about her strange dream. I wondered why he wouldn’t want this meeting to be more formal and at his desk, but I didn’t question him. Jasper pushed one of the larger chairs in front of the desk over to the area, and Logan gratefully took it. As he plopped into the chair, he closed his eyes almost as if he hadn’t sat anywhere remotely as comfortable in a long time. I began to look him over. The scars on his face were nothing compared to the rest of his body. Though he did appear to be wearing Elliott’s clothes as they were a bit too large,
**Elliott POV**So strange. One moment, Jade was reaching out for a handshake and then next, she was gasping, and her eyes clouded over as if in a private link. When they came back into focus, she looked blankly and wordlessly at our guest for at least 15 seconds.“You’re Logan.” She almost whispered. How could she know that? He’d only just told me his first name on our way up to my office so I would know how to introduce him.“Do you trust me?” He asked my mate, looking almost as if he could see into her very core.I saw Jade nod stoically in response. “But I don’t know why.” She admitted in a whisper.I saw him reach out as if to hug MY mate, and I couldn’t stop Aries from interfering. I liked to think of myself as more evolved than my wolf, but he had a point. Why was this stranger touching our mate knowing she bore our mark?A growl came from deep inside me, a carnal and possessive one. I could see the fear on Logan’s face, and I didn’t care. It wasn’t until I looked at Jade and s
Before I could spin out too much, the door swung open. My breath hitched and I sprinted toward my mate, jumping into his arms, and inhaling deeply into his hair. “Are you okay?!” I realized I was crying.“Yes, love. I’m just fine, and I think we may have made a major breakthrough about your old pack. Mystic Moon, I mean.” Elliott’s voice was the greatest sound I’d ever heard. I was barely processing what he was saying and just wept into his shoulder. I knew he was fine now, but I realized the thought that he’d been hurt—or maybe even worse—had frightened me more than anything ever had in my life.I finally realized what Elliott had just said to me when I heard someone clearing their throat. The sound was coming from behind Elliott, so this must’ve been the ‘them’ they were talking about.I slid slowly down from my mate’s grasp before looking behind him. There stood a man with dirty blonde hair falling in messy-looking curls down past his shoulders. His hair was even longer than Elliot
**Jade POV**Cleo pulled away suddenly and I could see a very confused and slightly alarmed look on her face. “That was Cameron. Evidently there’s some sort of emergency and we all need to go into Elliott’s office and wait for them.”“Is Elliott okay?!” I asked, wondering why he didn’t link me himself.“I’m not sure.” Cleo bit her lip. Her eyes clouded over, and I wondered if she was mindlinking back to ask.“I just linked Jasper. He said Cam asked him to come too, but if Elliott were hurt Jasper would be one of the first people to be linked,” she seemed to be trying to calm me, but my eyes got a bit wider wondering why the beta would be told before Elliott’s mate. Why was Jasper more important? And why was I so upset about it? “You’ll be the first to know as soon as you’re able to be linked!” Cleo patted my arm, trying to explain it to me and I felt a bit of relief. We made our way into the hallway, and I saw Cameron and Sebastian naked and rushing toward us. Being wolves, nudity was
**Cleo POV**We’d had an eventful few hours. Vera had thrown a few scenarios at the girls, who had taken it all in stride. Jade seemed to have a natural hosting ability just like rumor has it her own mother did, but it was beginning to seem kind of obvious to me that Emma was of some sort of high-ranking descent. Maybe not an alpha, but she could easily be a gamma or maybe even a beta. She seemed to not only catch on to the more tedious aspects of her role quickly, but she also seemed to enjoy learning what was expected of her. Both girls were taking notes so quickly and diligently that I could swear I could almost see steam coming from their pens, Jade writing little notes next to her notes on occasion and Emma looking like she wished she had some sort of recording device. I made a mental note to ask Vera if we should record lessons or even make flashcards to quiz them later on.I knew the expectations of a ranked female could be daunting. When I’d realized that becoming Jasper’s mat
