Joel
Man, I was bored. Washing dishes had to be the worst job in the whole world.
My hands had shrivelled up like two sad, deflated balloons in the water, and this was just in preparation for the ball!
Another chef passed a dirty saucepan my way. I say saucepan, but these things were so huge I could probably have a bath in it!
I scrubbed away at it, letting out small curses at the chef who had let the sauce burn onto the bottom of it, making me feel like I was trying to scrub off concrete.
I couldn’t even imagine how crazy it was going to be tonight when we served the 4 course meal to the 200 invited guests. At least my uncle had drafted in extra help for later so I wouldn’t be on my own.
Speak of the devil….my uncle came racing into the kitchen, nearly knocking the pastry chef off his feet. A fluster of apologies followed before he zoned in on me and started heading over.
“You ok there Uncle? You know if that vein in your neck throbs any harder, it’s going to burst all over the lovely food they’ve already cooked.”
I probably shouldn’t talk to my uncle like that in front of the other staff, but I just couldn’t help myself sometimes.
He raised an eyebrow at my choice of words but clearly had more pressing issues to deal with.
“Harry can’t make it tonight as he was injured in training this morning, so I’m a valet down.”
“Oh shoot,” I said in sympathy. “Can Simon not cover?”
“No Simon is my head waiter tonight as Justin’s wife has gone into labour.”
I let out a short snort of laughter before quickly changing to a more sympathetic face.
“Damn, looks like you’ll have to find someone else then.” I said grabbing another pot to wash.
“Emm, yes, well, actually that’s what I’m doing right now.”
Something about my uncle’s tone made me stop washing, and look over at him. He was looking directly at me with a slightly apologetic expression on his face.
“Me?!” I asked in part surprise, part horror.
“You’re perfectly capable of doing the job Joel,” he said in his calming but authoritative voice.
I didn’t believe him at all.
“Surely one of the waiters would be a better choice,” I said clutching at straws.
“Sure, they could step up, but then who would wait the tables? It’s an important night tonight, and it’s silver service, so I need to have trained waiters. Believe it or not you need less training to be a Valet even if it is a more senior position.”
“But it means I’ll have to speak to...to them. And be like sociable and stuff.”
My uncle rolled his eyes. “You’re a big boy now Joel, I’m sure you can manage to be pleasant for just one night.”
I pulled a face.
My uncle switched tactics.
“Look Joel, you said you wanted to advance, and get the opportunity to earn more money. Well here is an opportunity opening right up for you. Most people would give their right hand to be offered the job of Valet for the night. It will look good when you apply for other roles…..unless of course you want to spend the next 5 years washing pots…”
Ok, he had me there…
“Fine. What do you need me to do?” I said with a resigned expression.
My uncle didn’t even try to hide his victorious grin. “Just go home, have a shower, and be back here at 6pm sharp wearing your best shirt and trousers.”
“Yes Sir!” I said giving a hearty salute and clicking my heels together.
My uncle groaned and started walking away.
I dropped what I was doing and flipped off my apron before turning to run out the door, like a prisoner with a day release pass.
“....and don’t forget to polish your shoes!” my uncle shouted as I ran out the door.
-----------------
An hour and a half later and I was slowly making my way towards the manor, feeling tarted up in my freshly pressed shirt and trousers. My mum was so excited when she heard I was going to be a valet for the evening, and she had thrown herself into shining my shoes until I could see my reflection in them.
Even though I could see my uncle’s point about being given the opportunity to progress up the ladder, I still couldn’t bring myself to feel any enthusiasm for what was to come.
I would have to interact with Them. Me! I struggled to be pleasant in my own company. Hell, I regularly wished I just had an off button to make me shut up. And here I was being expected to make pleasantries with people who I would quite happily empty a rubbish truck over.
As I approached the entrance to the manor, I could see that there was already a small crowd gathering at the gate at the bottom of the drive.
Did people not have anything better to do with their lives? Who did they think they’d be seeing? I would never understand why the family you were born into would define how you were seen by others.
As I got closer to the crowd, a couple of familiar faces suddenly broke away from the group and started making their way over to me.
“Oh god, not you too!” I wailed, disappointed that my two friends had succumbed to
‘celebrity spotting’.
“What?!” Lyla said innocently, while Mark just rolled his eyes.
I suspected that Lyla had actually dragged him here and he would probably rather be at home, playing his video games.
“All you’re going to see is a bunch of stuck up pretentious guests who wouldn’t know their arse from their elbow.”
“Oh, Joel, remove that stick from up your ass for a second,” Lyla said, while mimicking removing something long and thin from behind me.
I swatted at her hands like I was trying to bat away a swarm of bees.
“Just give it a rest you two!” said Mark, looking really fed up.
“Fine!” I huffed, putting my hands back by my sides.
It was at this point that Lyla finally noticed what I was wearing.
“Oh my god Joel, why are you dressed like that? Are you going to be waiting tables?”
“Didn’t you hear Lyla?” said Mark with a mischievous smile, “Joel is providing the entertainment, pulling rabbits of the men’s top hats!”
That earned him a cuff round the head from me.
Lyla just sniggered.
“Actually you’re both wrong” I said, trying not to sound too smug (and failing miserably), “I’m being a Valet for the evening.”
Lyla did her signature squeal and started bouncing up and down in excitement.
“That’s so exciting!” she squeaked. “What will you be doing exactly?”
“I have no idea,” I said laughing. “I’m going to meet my uncle now to find out.”
“Good luck mate,” said Mark patting me on the back. “You’re going to need it to make it out alive.”
“Thanks for that vote of confidence,” I said slowly making my way to the gate. I turned to Lyla, “Any last words of advice?”
She looked slightly panicked at being asked such a thing, then clearly blurted out the first thing she thought of, “Always wash your hands after you’ve been to the toilet.”
“Don’t eat yellow snow,” Mark added with a huge grin on his face.
“Why do I bother?” I said, mostly to myself as I walked away.
“Keep calm and carry on. Dance as though no one is watching. You only live once..” Mark was clearly enjoying himself as he carried on throwing useless advice my way.
“...Just be yourself.”
“NO!” Lyla suddenly shouted making me glance back at them.
“If there’s one piece of advice you should listen to, it’s don’t be yourself!” she shouted as Mark doubled over in laughter.
I flashed her my best dirty look before showing my work pass to the guard and being let through the gate.
-----------------
I looked at myself in the mirror, not sure whether I should laugh or cry.
Duncan had given me a navy blue blazer and tie to wear - standard uniform for the Valets. I turned to the left a bit, and then to the right, and then all the way around, all the while keeping my gaze on the mirror.
I looked good. Even my arse looked good I was pleased to note. But how could I think I looked good in this? For me, it was the equivalent of fluorescent orange scrubs, otherwise known as prison uniform.
It was like wearing the label that said, this is all I am worth - serving those who are better than me. No, correction, think they are better than me.
I looked around at all the other staff, busy with their jobs getting everything perfect for the start of the ball. There was a general buzz of excitement around the place. A tingling sensation in the air that something amazing was about to happen. Even the staff looked happy with the prospect of being involved in something as grand as this.
I wasn’t happy...or excited.
Duncan suddenly appeared in front of me, snapping me from my thoughts.
“Right Joel, are you ready?”
“As much as i’ll ever be,” I said, with a small sigh.
My uncle rolled his eyes. “Enough of that attitude. You’re going to have to smile tonight. Do you think you can at least manage that?”
I put on my best fake cheesy smile. All teeth and no substance.
Duncan ignored my effort but continued leading me through the manor. He gave me a quick guided tour of the main areas, not because I would be working in any of them, but because if any guest asked for my help, I needed to know the basics.
The guests would basically be in three areas. The lounge, the dining room and the ballroom. I suppose the ballroom was kind of what I was expecting. A massive room with a vaulted ceiling and shiny wood floor. The space was pretty empty to allow for dancing, except for a small stage at one end, where the band would play, and various chairs around the edge, for people to watch from.
The dining room and lounge were not what I was expecting. The lounge was huge! It was probably as big as all the rooms in my house put together. There were 3 different seating areas with settees, beanbags, tables and chairs, and one wall had a massive TV on that was the size of a large window. I also noticed a pool table in one corner and some table games in another.
The dining room was the one the took my breath away. Molly was right about the pillars being gold. Although in my mind I thought it must be gold paint. Surely they can’t be solid gold right?
The tables looked amazing. It looked like a scene from a very expensive wedding. The white table clothes looked pristine with the best silver cutlery immaculately spaced for each setting. There were flowers everywhere, mainly pink, white and red, and the seats had white covers with red bows on them.
Again, I was whisked along by Duncan, barely taking in anything he was telling me.
At last we came to a stop, in a rather dark, miserable looking room, right next to the front door.
“And this is where you will be working,” Duncan said with a flourish, like I would be impressed or something.
I glanced around slightly puzzled. “And what would I be doing in here?” I asked in anticipation.
“This is the cloakroom” replied Duncan. “You will be taking the guests coats and hanging them up in here.”
I nodded my head while deep in thought. This was do-able. How hard could it be?
“Well coats are certainly easier to deal with than the guests” I said smiling.
A frown appeared on my Uncle’s face.
“You’ll still have to deal with the guests. How else are you expecting to get their coats?”
I grinned sheepishly, “I thought maybe you would hand them to me?”
My Uncle chuckled quietly. “I’m afraid I will be much too busy to do that! The guests will be met in the lobby by Jeremy,” Jeremy was a butler, “then they will make their way into the cloakroom where you will take their coats and hand them a ticket number which will match the hanger in this room here.
“Wait, so the guests will be coming in here?” I said looking around at the drab room, full of rails of hangers.
“No. This is also part of the cloakroom,” he said, opening another door and leading me into what could only be described as a posh dressing room.
“Once they have handed you their coats, the ladies usually want to spend a few minutes preening themselves in front of the mirror before they enter through here..” he said before opening another set of double doors, “....where Casper will be waiting to greet them.”
I followed my Uncle through to this next room, all the while thinking just how close I would be to Casper for the start of the night.
This room was quite small and intimate, with just one chair and a small coffee table in it.
“Wait.” I said a little confused. “Why is he greeting them in here and not in one of the main rooms?”
“Because the whole idea of this ball, is for Casper to find his mate. Can you imagine what it would be like if he was doing that in front of all the guests. It would be like some sort of stage show. This way it is all done in private, and when he does find his mate, they will be able to share a brief moment together before she will be thrust into the spotlight.”
I remained silent while trying to let all this sink in.
“In truth,” Duncan added, “if he does find his mate tonight, you may be the first one to know.”
I looked across at my Uncle in horror, then quickly adjusted my expression when I realised he thought this would be an incentive to do this job.
Why would I want to know who his mate was? I’m sure she would be some stuck up rich werewolf with very little to say for herself other than how wonderful and smoking hot Casper was. Ok sure, I thought that too, but at least I had the decency to keep it to myself.
A thought suddenly occurred to me.
“Hang on, how would I know if he met his mate. I’ll be in that room not this one,” I said pointing back to the cloakroom.
“Ahh, but here is the other part of your job,” my Uncle said rather cryptically, while walking back towards the cloakroom, but waving at me to stay where I was.
I waited for a few seconds before I heard a noise from behind me.
I swung round to what I thought was just a wall, to see one of the panels opening up, revealing a small hatch at about chest height.
My Uncle suddenly appeared in the space, grinning at me, like he’d just revealed a secret passage.
I walked over to him and peered into the room, surprised to see that it was the same room as before - the drab one with all the hangers in.
“The other part of your job will be to usher people from the cloakroom area, through to Casper, but you have to make sure that there is only one female with him at any time. So you will use this hatch to take an inconspicuous look to make sure that the previous guest has left and entered into the ballroom. It is very important that you are as discreet as possible. The whole point of this room, is that they have a moment in private. They don’t need you stood there staring at them.”
For the first time that day I felt a wave of anxiety suddenly travel through my body. I had no idea I would be working this close to Casper. It was literally my job to keep my eye on him. And what if he recognised me from that time in the kitchen? Would he still be mad? My uncle would be mortified if he took one look at me and told me to leave. Should I maybe tell my uncle what happened?
My uncle must have been able to see from my expression that I was worried, as he asked, “Is everything alright Joel?”
I smiled weakly at him, not wanting to let him down. “It’s fine, honestly….it’s just I didn’t expect to be working this close to Casper. What if I get it wrong, or he takes a dislike to me?”
My Uncle smiled, “if you’re talking about that little incident when you came for your interview, you don’t need to worry. I’ve already had a chat with him about it.”
I felt my chin drop to the floor.
“You...you know about that?”
“Of course I do. It’s my job to know,” he said while tapping the side of his nose.
I had so many emotions whirling round right know that I didn’t know where to start. Embarrassment, relief, anxiety, surprise, anger, disappointment, curiosity?
Before I could dwell on any one of these feelings, my Uncle whisked me away again muttering something about showing me what to do with the tickets.
CasperI stared at myself in the mirror and sighed. I hated these things. Not mirrors, balls.Admittedly, at first I had been excited whenever my father threw me a ball. The first couple of years I was filled with anticipation, hoping that today would be the day when I would finally meet my mate. Now I just felt like it was a huge waste of my time. There was a knock on my door and Jamie, my Beta, stuck his head round the door.“Come on Casper, the first guests are due to arrive any minute.”He disappeared again, just as quickly, probably keen to go and get a good spot downstairs.Jamie also hadn’t found his mate yet, so he too was eager to meet as many she-wolves as possible. He had only just turned 20 though, so he still had plenty of time left.I stood up and took one last look in the mirror.I guess I looked ok. People always told me I was good looking, but honestly, I wasn’t sure if that was just because I was their future Alpha. I mean, who would tell their future leader that the
JoelI was having more fun than I ever thought was possible in this place.I was nervous at first about having to talk with all these high ranking guests, but really when it came down to it, they were very easy to get along with. And by that, I mean it was very easy to read them, and tell them what they wanted to hear. The next lady to come in was very pretty, but gosh, did she know it. She looked like she didn’t want to be here, and that she was doing us all a service by allowing us to be in her presence.“Good evening Miss. May I take your coat?”She didn’t answer me, but began taking her coat off. It was this cream fur monstrosity that I am sure probably only had a heartbeat yesterday.“My, my, this is exquisite!” I said enthusiastically as she handed me her coat. “I’ll make sure I put this one with the family coats and keep a close eye on it,” in case it suddenly runs off on it’s own! This earned me a half look of acknowledgement. Well I tried! She didn’t seem to make any move to
CasperThe first person I bumped into when I walked into the ballroom was my father. I fought hard not to roll my eyes at my bad luck.He always seemed to take it personally when I didn’t find my mate, and usually took out his frustration on me, like I was some kind of failure.I braced myself for it.“So, did you meet her?” he asked with a glint in his eye.I was momentarily thrown. Did it look like I had found my mate? I held back my sarcastic reply, and instead said, “No, not this time.”My dad frowned briefly but then his face cleared as he said, “No, not your mate, I was talking about Miss Hartley.”“Oh, yes,” I said in response, but then immediately grew suspicious at his tone. “Why, what have you got planned Dad?”“Oh nothing, nothing,” he said patting my shoulder lightly.I knew him better than that. But I also knew it wouldn’t be wise to push him either. I’m sure I would find out soon enough.“Where is she anyway?” my dad asked.“Oh, I’ve assigned a member of staff to h
JoelI made my way back to Miss Hartley, hoping that my recent encounter with the Alpha didn’t show on the outside. On the inside I was still a quivering mess.Miss Hartley was sat on her own watching couples dance around the ballroom. I stood behind her right shoulder. Not close enough to be seen as being with her, but close enough so she could interact with me if she needed anything.I glanced around the ballroom watching all the couples dance to a waltz that was being played by the small band on the stage. It really was quite a spectacle. It was like taking a step back in time, like getting a glimpse into the days of Jane Austen and the glamorous balls described in her books. No I didn’t read Jane Austen, but we had studied two of her books in school. It was actually very calming watching the mass of bodies twirling round and round to the music, and I found myself calming down from my previous encounter.I knew that the Alpha was scary, and I’d heard stories about his short tem
CasperI watched them laughing together.Did he not realise he was going to get himself in trouble again? To look at them you would have thought they were close friends. The way they leaned over to one another when they spoke, and the way they laughed, like they didn’t have a care in the world.I looked at Emily Hartley. There was no doubt that she was beautiful. Especially when she let go of herself like she was now. Her whole body had come alive; her eyes were sparkling, and her smile was beaming.I felt a stab of jealousy twist like a knife through my chest. He wasn’t supposed to be talking to her. I was. He was just staff; I was going to be the next Alpha. I should be making her look like that, not him.He turned and looked right at me. I quickly relaxed my face muscles from the scowl I was wearing and kept my face neutral. There was no way I was going to let him think he could have this effect on me. I shouldn’t be jealous. He was nothing. How could I be jealous when he was so in
JoelI was exhausted. While the four course meal was being served, I busied myself cleaning up the lounge and ballroom, clearing away all the empty glasses, and putting the furniture back, no doubt only to be moved again later.I also helped out a little in the dining room. Mainly just bussing away the dirty plates. After the meal, Casper stuck to Miss Hartley like glue. I won’t lie - it hurt a little. I told myself it was because I liked Miss Hartley’s company and wanted the chance to talk to her again. But in truth I was jealous. I was jealous that she got to spend so much time with Casper. Why did he have to be so goddamn hot?!Towards the end of the evening I was stationed back in my cloakroom distributing coats out to departing guests. I only had a handful left when Miss Hartley appeared at the hatch.“Hello Miss Hartley.” I said, “I hope you enjoyed your evening?”“Yes, very much,” she replied. “I only wish I had managed to spend more time with you. Casper can be a bit…
Lyla:I paced round nervously.“Should we go back, and see if he needs any help?” I directed at Mark, who was casually sat on a large rock peeling the bark off a stick.“There’s not really much we can do now,” replied Mark, “he’s probably already out of the game, and the last thing he would want is for us to go and get caught after he sacrificed himself so we could get away.”Mark had a good point, but that didn’t make me feel any better.I stared at him, wondering how on earth he could look so calm. How could he not care that we’d just left poor Joel facing that beast of a wolf?Mark sighed. “It’s because I have faith in him. Don’t you?”It took me a few seconds to realise that he must have been able to tell what I was thinking, by the scowl that was directed his way.“Of course I have faith in him” I replied, although there was uncertainty in my voice.Mark just smirked and went back to his stick.“I can worry as well you know,” I said, getting increasingly annoyed by Mark. “He’
Casper:“Stop stressing about it!” I said to Jamie, getting a little tired of his sulking.“But it wasn’t fair!” he moaned.I sighed and rolled my eyes. He didn’t see me though because he was laid out on his back on the grass with his arm over his eyes.“The green team won. They didn’t break any of the rules.”He opened his eyes and looked at me intently. “Of course he broke the rules! He pissed in my territory! How’s that not breaking the rules?!”There was just no talking my beta out of this one. He was fiercely competitive, as all beta’s are, but it drove me a little mad sometimes. It was, after all, only a game.“It’s not breaking the rules,” I said. “Sure, it was a little disrespectful, but I think that was the whole point. He wanted to distract you, and the best way to do that was to get you angry. No one thinks straight when they’re angry.”“Yes, but he also pushed you off that branch earlier. How can you not be mad about that?”I just shrugged.“SERIOUSLY!?!” he shoute
EmilyCole was avoiding me.He somehow managed to completely disappear on Saturday, despite me spending the best part of an hour looking for him.I had a sneaky feeling Annabell was helping him, as I saw her a couple of times with a mischievous grin on her face as she watched me walk by.From the little I had seen of him though, he looked like he was doing better. The black circles under his eyes had gone, and his smile looked real instead of forced, like it was last week.I just hoped that he was finally moving on.It wasn’t until Thursday that I realised I was missing something, when Casper asked,“How was Cole on Saturday?”I found the question odd, as Casper made it clear he didn’t want to be involved when I asked him to speak to Nathan last week.Casper was not one to pry into other people’s business. He was a very private person himself and so he didn’t enjoy those sort of conversations, and avoided them at all costs.“He was doing better, why do you ask?” I said, carefully ob
NathanI ran down the stairs taking two at a time.It wasn’t that I was in a rush, it was just that I felt like I had so much energy to burn.I rounded the corner and nearly bumped straight into Emily.“Woah there tiger!” she said, holding her arms up in anticipation of an impact.I managed to holt just centimeters away from her hands.“Oops, sorry,” I said with a smile before stepping to the side to go around her.“Hang on a second,” she said, and I turned back to see a confused frown on her face.I raised my eyebrows slightly waiting for her to continue. She walked over and paced around me in a full circle, her eyes roving over me as if she was trying to work something out.I just watched her in amusement.“What’s got you in such a good mood?” she said, stopping in front of me, her head tipped slightly to one side.“The sun is shining, it’s a beautiful day, why wouldn’t I be in a good mood?” I replied, as I again stepped around her and headed into the kitchen to grab something to ea
ColeI made my way slowly to Highfield Hall. It had been 8 weeks since I had seen Nathan.I thought that over time, the pain of the rejection would go away, that it would hurt less. I was wrong. Every Saturday it seemed to be getting harder and harder to motivate myself to walk the short distance to the Hall.Sure, once I was there, I usually managed to lose myself in what I was there to do. But just going to the place, physically putting one foot in front of the other to go to the place that I first saw Nathan required so much effort that once I got there I was already exhausted. It didn’t help that I hadn’t slept properly in weeks.I walked in through the front gate, something I still managed to chuckle about, despite my mood, and walked over to where I saw James and Emily looking over our latest plans.“Hey Cole, how’s thi….woah you look rough, are you feeling ok?” Emily said, coming over to me and giving me the once over, before settling for looking directly into my eyes.“I’m
NathanIt had been exactly 6 weeks since I’d seen Cole. 6 long torturous weeks. It was Saturday again which meant only one thing. Cole would be coming to Highfield Hall later today.I hated Saturdays. I hated them so much. I basically spent the whole day pacing around my room, desperate to go out, desperate to be anywhere but staring at these four walls. But I couldn’t. Because I didn’t trust myself not to sneak a peek at him. You know, just to see if he was alright. But of course he was alright. There was barely a day that went by without someone mentioning his name. You see he turned out to be a bit of a whizz at this ecology stuff, and well, he sort of became James the gardener’s right hand man. And of course Annabell just worshiped the ground he walked on. Every sentence she said seemed to start with, ‘do you know what Cole said….’ or ‘do you know what me and Cole did…..’”It was torture. Pure torture. And to make it worse, I think they knew exactly what they were doing
ColeI felt…….I don’t know.I suppose the only way to describe it would be numb.Did that really just happen? There was so much to think about that I didn't know what to start with.Maybe I should start with the fact that there are such things as werewolves!!That was…..amazing. I probably should be freaking out about that, but to be honest it was the only thing about tonight that made me feel in the least bit happy. For one, it made me realise that I wasn’t going mad. I knew there was something up with those dogs at the Hall, and I knew that I’d seen something odd when Percy bit that guy.But knowing that, knowing that they were werewolves made them…..well it made them less scary.I know that sounds stupid, but it really wasn’t in my mind. It made them different. It made them secretive, and less sure around people. It made them hide from the spotlight, and hide from being who they really wanted to be. It made them…..human?It made them more like me.I could feel the damp of t
NathanI banged angrily on the horn on my steering wheel.“FUCKING MOVE!!” I shouted at the taxi that had just decided to stop in the middle of the road. Some drunken tart with a skirt up her arse and heels the size of tower blocks tottered over to the taxi, throwing a middle finger in my direction before getting in.I drew in a deep breath through my nose. I couldn’t lose my temper. It might cause me to be delayed further.I still couldn’t believe it took me so long to see the text from Cole. I always had my phone on me, yet tonight for some reason i’d left it in my bedroom. On the one night he needed me.As I drove like a maniac down the road I tried to rationalise with my thoughtsWhat if he’s badly hurt? That’s unlikely. He did manage to send a text.Yes but what if something happened after he sent that text, afterall, it took you long enough to read it.He’s bound to be fine. And then I can yell at him for texting me when I specifically told him to only text about the project
ColeOne second Percy was next to me, the next he was gone, and the only clue I had as to where he had gone were the screams now coming from behind me.I slowly turned round and gaped at what I saw. In just a few seconds the whole room seemed to be full of brawling bodies. I saw fists flying, and heard glass smashing, and everywhere I looked I could see bruises and cuts appearing on people’s faces.I wanted to run. I needed to run. But something kept me rooted to the spot. I needed to know that Natalie and Percy were alright.I couldn’t see either of them in the chaos in front of me, but I knew I would have to move if I wanted to find them.Slowly I edged my way into the mass of bodies. Ducking a flying chair and leaping over a pair wrestling on the floor, I eventually spotted Natalie cowering behind an armchair.I quickly dove behind the chair next to her.“Come one, we need to get out of here,” I said.I turned to look at Natalie and I could see the tears beginning to fall down
Cole“P to the A to the R T Y - It’s PARTY TIME! Whoop Whooop!”I swear there was something medically wrong with her sometimes.“My god girl, you’ve not even had a drink yet!” I said to Natalie as we walked up the street where the party was being held.“That’s what you think,” she said with an overly exaggerated wink.“Oh man, I’m going to be carrying you out of here tonight, aren’t I?” I said with a groan.“Hey, just think of it as payback for last time,” she said with a mischievous glint in her eye.Ah, I guess she had a point there.I looked up at the house that was now infront of us. It was a large detached stone house, with a huge drive, lined by immaculately pruned conifer trees. I could never quite get my head around how people managed to have parties in homes like these. Where were the parents? Surely they couldn’t know what was going on. The damage alone from a party like this would probably cost hundreds if not thousands to put right. As if someone could read my mind, th
NathanI didn’t want to be here. Every fibre of my being was screaming at me to leave.Well, actually, that wasn’t quite true. My heart was screaming for me to stay, but every other part of me just wanted to get as far away as possible.I hated Ronan and his big idea. I knew Cole would be here. I just knew it. Why wouldn’t he listen to me?!The moment I entered into the lecture theatre I could sense him in the room. And before long, I caught his scent. That was the thing about mates. You became highly attuned to their scent meaning you could pick it out easily among a group of people, and from a distance too.God he smelled good. Like the forest just after a heavy downpour.I forced myself to breathe through my mouth to not be drawn in by it any further.I needed to look at the silver lining here. Ronan had said that if Cole got involved, I could pass the project onto someone else. And it’s not like I wanted to do this in the first place. Why would I want to have to make conve
