Clarissa

The flames were burning high, their fiery embers licking the sky. It shone bright and burned fiercely yet all I felt while standing in front of it was…anger.

Anger at the being who had brought death and destruction upon me, upon those I loved. My eyes watered due to the heat that should have melted my skin and bones but I was merely looking around, trying to locate him.

The smoke that rose high in the sky made me fear for my loved ones. I couldn’t find them yet I had a sinking feeling that they were somewhere near yet beyond my reach.

I feared the fire would devour everything that mattered to me…and snatch away everyone from me.

That feeling made my heart skip a beat.

Panic encroached upon me and I began shouting hoarsely for my family.

“Mom…dad…Talia”

But I heard no response.

Surrounded by a sea of flames, I roamed around for a while before I found him…or what was a shadow of him.

“What do you want?” I screamed amidst the roaring flames that were engulfing everything in its wake.

If he heard me the first time, he gave me no indication of it. Except for the slight tensing of his shoulders. The silence was so long that I felt he would never ever reply as seconds morphed into minutes.

Then came his curt answer,

“You know what I want, you’ve known it all along, haven’t you?”

I was not surprised to realize that I knew the answer like the back of my hand. But I was surprised to discover that I didn’t mind it.

*****

I felt the heat on my skin and got up with a start. The window to my room was open and I felt the cool air splash into my face, a striking contrast to what I had been experiencing a moment ago.

A thin coat of sweat glistened on my forehead as I wiped it off with the back of my hand. Beside me, on the other bed, my twin was fast asleep, snoring lightly. I felt jealous of her ability to sleep so peacefully when I suffered from nightmares.

I had been seeing the same dream over and over for as long as I could remember. I had no idea when they had started or how, but I kept seeing it nonetheless.

I should have gotten used to it but somehow every time he asked that question, it unnerved me for some reason.

Reaching for the pitcher and the glass kept on the nightstand beside my table, I poured myself a glass of water and tried to steady my raging breath.

I then tiptoed my way around the room and walked towards the window to let the cool air splash into my face again.

Dawn was almost upon us and I could see the first rays of sun peeking through the horizon. Mom would soon be calling us downstairs for the lessons.

The thought made me groan in frustration.

While I was deep in my thoughts, trying to make sense of my weird nightmares, Talia angrily shut the alarm that buzzed beside her nightstand by swatting it like a fly.

“Morning princess” I greeted her as she rubbed her fingers over her drowsy eyes.

She saw me standing near the window and asked, “Prince charming is haunting you again?”

Talia was the only one I confided in about my nightmares. For some reason, I never worked up the nerve to share it with my parents or others.

I huffed dramatically and replied, “how many times have I told you that he is not a ‘prince charming’?” creating air quotes around the last two words with my hands in the air.

Talia let out a yawn and stretched herself like a cat before answering, “What makes you sure he is not?”

“For starters, I haven’t seen his face. His back is always turned to me. Second, are you forgetting the sky high flames and the way I see him playing with them? Do you think I have some weird fetish for a fire controlling freak?”

“And why would you not confide in our parents? Mom is gifted, maybe she could unravel the mystery”

I shook my head at that. “You swore you won't tell anyone.”

Talia tied her hair in a ponytail and was about to get into a debate about why she felt it was a great idea to tell mom that I was having nightmares when mom’s voice reached us from below, “Girls, hurry up”

The stern voice of our mom reached us and we scampered to get ready. I was thankful that Talia didn’t pursue the topic again.

Sharing a bathroom had its downsides as well as perks. We had seen each other naked practically every day since growing up so we had no qualms shedding our clothes and rushing into the bathroom for a quick shower while simultaneously brushing our teeth.

While brushing, Talia asked me as she stared into my reflection in the mirror.

“You are joining us today, right?”

I was lathering up soap in my hands and I simply gave her an imperceptible nod. “Don’t chicken out at the last minute like always, you scared monkey.”

I made no comment on why their plans for the evening were more than dangerous. If mother got to know, we would both be grounded.

“Just because Mr. abs asked you to join, don’t get all too excited.”

Talia spat a mouthful of toothpaste foam in the washing basin and winked, “At least you agree he is Mr. abs.”

I shook my head at that. Talia had a huge crush on Kyler, the next in line for alpha from the Greatwood pack down south. And, every girl would drool whenever he threw a glance at her. He was the usual alpha in line with washboard abs, dark eyes, and a smile that would make the girls throw themselves at him.

Well, except me.

I could not stand the thought of being a typical luna and giving birth to a runt of baby wolves. I had different plans in my head, ones that all the werewolves would condone.

I got out of the shower and quickly dressed in my training outfit while Talia did the same after taking a quick shower.

In under fifteen minutes, we were dressed and climbed downstairs in front of our mother who was seated at her usual spot in the study.

Mom was reading a book when we entered the room and took our seats opposite her.

“Good morning, Mom” we both chimed in a chorus and she gave a slight nod.

We seated ourselves on the two chairs and flipped open our notebooks. On the whiteboard in front of us, was a swirling set of runes that overlapped each other to form a huge circle.

“Time?” Talia asked while I stared at the drawing trying to understand the swirls and strokes. I was nibbling at the end of my already chewed-up pencil nervously.

“Half an hour”

“What?” I blurted out and was subjected to my mom’s stern gaze which quieted me down.

However, mom only got up went towards the whiteboard and erased the elaborate drawing with two clean swipes of the duster.

And as we watched in shock, she drew all of it in 2 minutes flat. She had made her point and I only looked at my twin sister feeling appalled before getting back to work.

She was hands down an expert in drawing these runes. Aunt Raine said she was gifted by the Goddess herself. No wonder, she could draw it in a heartbeat. Sometimes, I wondered if she could draw it even with her eyes closed.

Letting out a sigh, I began trying to draw the runes my mom had effortlessly drawn on the whiteboard.

For the next few minutes, the only noise was that of the faint scratching of our pencils against the paper.

The silence was heavy and apart from our scribbling was only punctuated by the faint shuffling of the page as mom continued to read her book.

“Natalie,”

Dad’s voice drifted as he walked into the room and mom’s face brightened like the sun itself.

“Morning sweetheart,” Mom replied as dad plucked her up in his arms and kissed her full on the mouth.

Talia gasped. I gagged.

How could people be so in love with each other? To my parents, there was no end to their romance. It was as if they fell in love with each other over and over.

“Hayden, stop it, the girls are watching,” Mom swatted her hand playfully against dad’s shoulder but dad only pulled her harder towards himself.

I made a very graphic action of puking in front of my sister who giggled. I then turned around to look outside the window. Far away, hidden beneath the canopy of dark green leaves, I think I saw something.

My eyes gazed intently at it and I saw that there were two dots of white looking in my direction.

No, not in my direction.

At me.

Then I blinked and they were gone as quickly as I had seen them.

What was it? I looked around to see if anybody else had noticed it but nobody was even looking outside.

It was almost as if I had imagined the dots. But, deep down I knew that I hadn’t. I was sure of it.

Clarissa Talia dragged me out of the room, our drawings were forgotten on the table as the sounds of mom and dad passionately kissing each other filled the space. Talia continued to giggle while I only frowned, “Aren’t they too much? They behave like they found each other just a minute ago.” “You look quite hot in the morning, sweetheart,” Dad murmured as he grabbed mom who chuckled, “so do you, alpha Hayden” and returned his kiss with equal fervor. I angrily yanked the zipper of my bag open and pulled out a rubber band to tie my hair. “They were fated mates, Clary. And from what aunt Raine has told us about their story, mom and dad were infatuated with each other even before they found out that they were mates. How exciting!!” My sister gushed and I rolled my eyes. Sometimes, I wondered if she really was my twin. We looked so similar yet were so different. While we had the same brown hair as our mom, Talia’s hair was a deep chestnut and wavy while mine was unmanageable. Her eye

Clarissa I wondered how my twin had the energy to get ready like a diva and threw her a skeptical look, “You know I won the bet, right? You are going to drop Kyler’s topic.” Talia was applying eyeliner when she asked, “Just what is your problem with him? What did he ever do to you?” “He is a show-off and there are rumors he got some girl pregnant by forcing himself on her. I am just doing my sisterly duties.” Talia shrugged off my concern, “Girls are more than willing to let him impregnate them as long as they can secure a chance to be his luna.” “Whatever. I just don’t like him. Find somebody else.” I got up and studied my reflection in the mirror. I was dressed in a backless tank top and jeans while Talia was wearing a short dress that perfectly hugged her curves. She had done a good job of taming my wild hair that now fell down my shoulders in waves. I looked fine but she truly looked like a diva. I looked at the clock and it was almost time to head to the party. We got into

ClarissaI was growing angrier by the minute and decided to go to the washroom instead to wash my face and calm down. My phone rang and I picked it up.“What are my two princesses doing?” Dad’s voice asked me and I immediately tried to relax myself.“We are at the Madhouse dad, Talia dragged me here,” I grumbled.Dad only chuckled, “You should try to make friends, Clary. Anyways, I tried Talia’s phone but she didn’t receive my call so I gave you a ring. I and mom have to go to the west to discuss and renew our accords for the pack treaty.”I frowned, “When are you going?”“We will be leaving in an hour and returning in a week or so. While we are gone try to behave and return home soon tonight, ok?”Dad said and I replied, “Yes dad”“Also ask them to not forget practicing the runes” I heard mom shout at him from a bit further away.My father laughed and said, “They don’t need to be reminded about that, right?”I replied in a low voice, “Ok dad. Clarissa “Shit” I muttered and stepped out of hiding. I walked towards the two and Silas chuckled in a rather dangerous way, his eyes glinting with malice. “You sure she is with her? She looks rather pale and weak to me.” He asked as I walked towards them. Now, I could see the room clearly and gave a quick scan of the place to see where were the nearest exits. It looked like a store room with piles of discarded broken chairs, ropes, and other forgotten things. The only source of illumination was a big bulb that hung down from the ceiling right above Miranda’s head. The rest of it was dark. There were rectangular windows high above near the ceiling that I could not reach and only a single door, the same one we had walked in through. I shivered despite not feeling cold. Dacre had gone completely silent as he saw me step out of my hiding spot. He threw a lingering gaze on me, his eyes raking me from bottom to top and then quickly dismissing me as a tissue paper. I felt his gaze sta

ClarissaDo I worry about taking the life of someone or do I revel in the feelings bubbling inside of me? Dacre had taken me off guard and despite my multiple protests kept advancing toward me.My first instinct was to run away, to fight him, and to even bite hard into his hand holding the dagger. But, all of them vanished when he did the unexpected and leaned in to kiss me.Of all the things I would have imagined him to do to me, this was the least. I should have protested hard, should have kicked him where the sun didn’t shine. But the moment his lips touched mine, it was as if all logic flew out of my head. There was something about him that was odd…different. Like he was different from the rest of us.Whatever this ‘different’ meant! When his fingers brushed my bare back, I shivered, not due to fear but due to pleasure. That was definitely not how a killer would touch his prey. There was something sensual about the way he touched me. At least I hoped so.Because the emotions I n

Clarissa I took a moment to steady my raging heart, adjusted my top, and then stepped out of the door. When I did, I was surprised to see that there was practically nobody in the pub save a few stragglers who were still drinking or passed out. How did everybody leave so soon? I wondered and looked for my sister. Damn, I had forgotten everything when I was with Dacre. The main doors were locked on the inside and a few waiters were waking up the passed out people to make them leave through the back door. I wildly looked around and saw a door on my far left falling shut slowly. It was on the far end of the passageway that I had entered to follow Dacre earlier. I rushed towards the door and flung it open before stepping outside. The cool wind splashed into my face and I saw that the path led to the forest. I again looked around, not knowing where to go next. My instincts told me that I should head home as Talia had either left with Kyler to have sex with him or been the good girl and

A look passed between them but I was too busy to pay attention to them.A chill ran down my spine at the thought of my parents seeing the body of the dead girl and how they would react upon knowing that I was a suspect.

ClarissaTalia’s bickering with Silas had taken my attention away from Dacre and the fact that we had just witnessed a murder. But I recalled it the second my eyes fell on the two girls who were Miranda’s friends again. They were sitting rigidly and whispering to each other.Probably they were trying to ensure that we all rot in jail forever. The car’s ignition took a few minutes to start but I was hyperaware of the fact that I was sitting on the lap of the guy I had kissed half an hour ago.Even his legs felt like bricks to me and I clutched to the headrest of the front seat so as to not slide down. The car took a while to start and the tall man cranked the ignition a bit too hard, throwing me on Dacre’s chest.“Ouch” I groaned as my head bumped with the ceiling of the car. I wanted Klout and the other four guardians out of power so that I could reign single handedly.” Klout yelled loudly, “Just take her away from my eyes or I will kill her right here and right now.” He was teeming with anger. All of us had been fooled by a single woman- a power hungry, ruthless woman. Not demons not witches but one of us. Then Mary again shuddered and I felt the silky dress of Venzara brush against me as MAry howled, “What? What is happening? Why am I being held by the guards? Sir, the boys are at fault?” Mary cried as Venzara chuckled beside me. Klout slapped Mary hard and spoke, “You are going to be executed for your crimes. Take her away from my sight.” He barked and then also instructed the guards t

DacreHer earlier pitiful voice was replaced by her usual smug and arrogant expression for a while.“That was for what you did to my sister. Yes, my sister was one of the women you murdered and I have been keeping an eye on you ever since then.”Mary raised her hand to slap Mrs. Bryant as we all simply stared at the revelation, too confused to understand what was going on.A familiar voice spoke in my head, “Sorry, but this woman just drove me out of this hag’s body by startling me.”I scoffed. So, even the demoness could be startled. That was why Mary’s expression had suddenly changed. But then it went back to being all sorry and pitiful yet again as Mary continued, “Yes, I deserve all the hate. I have done awful things to get into power. At first, I wanted to be luna but Thaddeus was too dumb to take notice of me. He was busy fucking around women so that played in my favor. But then I realized he was not respected much so when one of the other elders of the pack got suspicious of me

I will not be impartial to you. It is against the council’s belief in fair justice.”I got up from the ground and looked him straight in the eye.“I and Silas were chosen for this mission from the get go and so

He obviously believed her and I was caned and whipped on occasion. She told him that this was necessary for the future alpha to be strong and dominating.”“What?”This time it was Venzara who shrieked and I gave a humorless chuckle.“Yeah, I only remember bits and pieces of it. Thankfully, one elder saw her mixing something in my food and discovered it to be sleeping pills. Mary was thrown out and I never saw her again. I was too young to voice out my worries as everybody was extremely afraid of dad and his anger. Even the elders had to face his ire for whisking away Mary but somehow they got rid of her and dad just went to another woman I guess.”I completed and Silas patted my shoulder, “I…I never knew”That was all he could offer and I heard his voice crack.“I had pushed the memories of my childhood deep int

Dacre“Well, I have figured out a lot of things. Of how, you nearly killed all of the children my father had ever had, of how you poisoned those around my mother and made them abandon her, and of how you tried to take the position of luna in our pack as well.”If she was stunned by my revelation, she did not answer directly.“What rubbish? Your father asked me to be his luna, in fact, he was after me for years, begging me to take up the throne. I hear that he has still not gotten over me and goes from one brothel to another, looking for a woman to fuck or two.”She wheezed and I had a mad urge to smack her right in the face.Ignoring her accusations, I asked, “What do you know of the demon summonings? How are you involved in all of this? She drummed her fingers on a nearby tree trunk and replied, “I am an Inquisitor appointed by the Council head himself. The windmill stood like a lone wolf in the distance and I let out a relieved sigh.I had been right about the direction though I had traveled there just once and that too through the road.Silas seemed to be floating in the air with a grumpy look as I feared Venzara was languidly roaming her fingers on him.I could only mind link to him and say, “Patience. But then women were a complicated species, one I had not even begun to comprehend.“Do you recall the last time I was fed?”I gave her an incredulous look. “You fucked Jake senseless. I thought that should keep you full for days”If I had meant to appease her, I managed to do the opposite.“I am not bound to Jake, I am bound to you…and Clarissa by definition.”I recalled the way Clarissa had offered her blood to Venzara who had sipped on her veins as if it was some exotic drink.“So?”“So, you both need to feed me from time to time or I have to look for nourishment elsewhere.”My eyes went wide at the thought of her and Clarissa making out.“You mean…you would…well, never
