Bodyguard

She mustered up the courage to speak up. "Father, I appreciate your consideration, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for such a big gathering. It's overwhelming for me, and I fear I won't be able to handle it well."

Her father leaned forward, his expression softening. "Lila, I understand your concern, but this gala is crucial for me. Many shareholders and investors will be there. Rumors are circulating about you, and my opponents are using them to ruin my political career. You know how much that means to me."

Lila bit her lip, feeling torn between her fear of large crowds and the desire to make her father proud. He had always been understanding, never forcing her into the limelight. For him to ask this of her meant it was important.

For years, she had read the rumors but had never thought they would affect her father so deeply.

Alice crossed her arms, clearly not convinced. "There must be another way, Father. Lila can contribute in other meaningful ways without subjecting herself to such overwhelming situations."

Their father sighed, realizing the difficulty. "I understand your concern, Alice, but I believe this is a chance for Lila to overcome her fears and discover new strengths. Besides, she won't be alone. Our new bodyguard, Mr. Marshal, will be there to ensure her safety and provide support. He’s my best friend and we go we back. I served in the military for a while that’s how I know him.”

Lila's heart skipped a beat at the mention of the bodyguard. She hadn't anticipated his involvement and felt a mixture of nerves and excitement.

Alice's eyes narrowed as she turned to Lila. "What do you think, Lila? Are you willing to give it a try?"

Lila hesitated, contemplating the pros and cons. Finally, she took a deep breath and nodded. "Alright, I'll attend the gala. But on one condition: since I don’t really know Mr. Marshal, can I get to know him first? I—it's difficult for me to—"

Their father smiled, visibly pleased with Lila's decision. "I know," he interrupted gently. "Don't worry, the gala is in a month. There will be enough time for you to get acquainted. I know I promised you a vacation, but we have to leave."

Lila frowned, loving the countryside's quietness and serenity. "Why, Dad?"

Her father leaned back in his chair. "I need to initiate my campaign rally in time for the gala, and since your sister is now our publicist, she will be joining me along with Mike. We can't leave you alone here."

Lila fidgeted with her fingers. "But you'll be leaving me alone in the big house all by myself. I like it here."

Alice's expression softened, and she reached out to squeeze Lila's hand in support. "Why don’t we let Lila stay here, Dad? Mr. Marshal can protect her, and they can get to know each other before the gala. The doctor said a serene environment is good for her, remember?"

Lila’s eyes widened at her sister’s suggestion, turning to look at her. Alice winked, and Lila blushed, understanding her sister's plan.

Their father's brows furrowed in contemplation. "But will you be alright with staying with him?"

Lila blushed slightly. "I—I guess so. You trust him, right? That’s why you hired him."

Mr. Reid nodded. "Yes, I don't trust many people, but Mr. Marshal is an exception. He’s a very good friend of mine but life happened and it’s been a while since he and I have seen each.”

Alice beamed. "Then good, he can take care of Lila when we are not there."

Lila's heart fluttered at the thought of spending more time with Mr. Marshal. She couldn't deny that she felt a connection with him during their brief encounter earlier. Despite her initial apprehension, she looked forward to getting to know him better.

Her father sighed and nodded. "Alright, Alice, I trust your judgment. Lila can stay here with Mr. Marshal while we attend the campaign rally. But remember, Lila, you need to cooperate with him and follow his instructions."

Lila nodded eagerly, her excitement and nerves intertwining. She couldn't believe she would have the chance to spend more time with Mr. Marshal, especially in a familiar and comfortable environment.

Her father stood up from his desk and walked over to her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I'm proud of you, Lila. I know this won't be easy for you, but I believe in your strength and resilience. Take this opportunity to face your fears and prove to yourself what you're capable of."

Lila smiled, feeling a surge of determination. She knew she had the support of her family and was determined to make them proud. She would embrace this challenge and use it as an opportunity for personal growth.

As they left their father's office, Alice whispered to Lila, "You're in luck, Lila. Spending more time with Mr. Marshal might turn out to be more interesting than we thought."

Lila blushed and playfully nudged her sister. "Oh, stop it, Alice. We're just getting to know each other. Let's not jump to conclusions."

Alice smirked mischievously. "We'll see about that, Lila. We'll see."

As they made their way back to their rooms, Lila's mind buzzed with anticipation. She couldn't help but wonder what adventures and challenges awaited her in the upcoming weeks. And most importantly, she looked forward to building a connection with the mysterious bodyguard, Mr. Marshal.
