Mikael parked in front of her house.
They were silent for a long time. Ever since they left the restaurant, to be precise. It wasn't that what he did scared her or anything, it was something else. Something she couldn't put her finger on.After a beat, he said, "I'm sorry about what happened. I lost my mind when he spoke to you that way. I know I shouldn't have done it but it was stronger than me. I can't describe the feeling."Kiera placed her hand on his arm. "Don't apologize."It was odd to her that they were only talking about the incident after they left the restaurant. When the red-faced man left, they were escorted to their seats and apart from the occasional glance from strangers, it was almost as if nothing had happened. They talked about random topics throughout the night and she got to know a little bit more about him. But even though they spent three hours in each other's company, he was still a complete stranger to her. They didn't talk about what the man said to her (which was essentially nothing harmful) so she didn't know why he wanted to touch on the subject now that he was dropping her off.Mikael turned toward her. In the darkness of the car, his eyes still glowed. It was almost unnatural. "I don't want you to get the wrong impression of me," he said. "I'm not an aggressive person.""I know," she said, although she didn't. Essentially, she didn't know a thing about him and the reality of that hit her like a ton of bricks when she beheld the man's discolored face."Still," he said unconvinced, "I feel I should explain myself to you. Seeing your face after he said those words and how he walked into you awakened this feeling in me. It was instinctual, I had no control over it. I felt I had to attack him but only because I wanted to defend you.""I get it," she said, unable to keep the smile from her lips. She was deeply flattered by his words. "I don't judge you, Mikael. We met like that, remember? You saved me from harm."He visibly relaxed. His eyes softened somehow and a small sigh escaped his lips. "Okay," was all he said."Okay," she said. They held each other's eyes for what felt like an eternity and the air around them thickened. Her chest was rising and falling with every breath she took. His eyes glowed brighter. She was leaning in and he was too. His warm breath fanned her face and she closed her eyes for a second. His lips were hovering above hers when she reopened them and she felt it in her gut that he was going to kiss her. She prepared herself for the sweet moment. And then his lips touched her cheek and she sagged with disappointment but her heart was still contented by the fact that his lips had touched at least one part of her.Mikael said, "Good night, Kiera. I'll see you on Saturday.""Good night," she said in a low voice. She exited the car. Her cheek was burning. She fumbled with the keys, her hands were trembling. The remote was lying right at the bottom, beneath everything she kept in her bag. He was backing out of the space when she walked past the gate. She turned around in hopes to see him but the headlights practically blinded her. He hooted lightly and then sped down the street.Kiera rubbed her arms as she watched him round the corner. She felt cold, suddenly. She knew she couldn't stay outside for too long. Her thoughts were on Mikael as she made her way inside her home. There was a small smile on her lips. She touched her cheek as she opened the front door. She felt like a teenager who had been kissed for the first time. The best part about it all was how kind and respectful he was. He never made it seem like he wanted to take her to bed. There was chemistry between them but he didn't emphasize it. He kept the conversation light and general, like he wanted to get to know her but only on the surface. He was taking baby steps. She appreciated it. Her relationship with Jared was so different. He took her to bed right after their date and then he asked her out. With Mikael, it was almost as if she was falling in love for the first time. She saw Simone standing in the doorway. Her presence made her halt. It wasn't late—it was a few minutes past nine—but seeing her awake and fully dressed at such a time was slightly shocking. "Is something wrong?" she asked right away.Simone gulped. "You have a visitor. I didn't want to call you because I knew you wouldn't want to be disturbed."The word made her brain freeze for a few beats. Visitor? She never had visitors. Not during the day and especially not at night. Perhaps Simone was confused. No, it couldn't be. That was a mean thought. "Who is it, Simone?" she asked instead."Jared," she answered. "He's in the kitchen with Kane."Her breath caught in her throat. Her grip on the straps of her bag tightened. "Why did you let him in, Simone? Why didn't you leave him outside like the animal he is?"She shrugged lightly but her eyes were filled with concern. "This is your house, Kiera. I know that I have lived here for a long time and my son was born here, but I know my place. He is your visitor, not mine. As I said, I didn't want to disturb you. It would ruin your night and you were so happy when you left."Her eyes filled with tears. She gulped them down and looked down at the floor. "You're right, it would have ruined my night. I'm sorry, Simone, I don't want you to think that this is your fault. And please, this is your home, too. You practically own it."Simone smiled kindly but she didn't say anything else. She was watching Kiera warily. Kiera, on the other hand, didn't know what to feel. Jared was in her kitchen, a few steps away. She would have to face him and talk to him after everything they went through. After everything he did to her. She could be a coward and ask Simone to tell him to leave but she knew Jared. He would go up to her room to look for her. He'd make himself right at home. She had to end it once and for all. She had to tell him to leave and never return. He was her burden, nobody else's.She took a deep breath and straightened her spine. Despite the awful situation, she was glad that her thoughts were clear. Her head was in the right place and she only had Mikael to thank for it. He was the one who helped her get over Jared, even though they only spent a few hours together. If he had never entered her life, she would've been crawling to the kitchen. She would've prepared herself to give Jared whatever he asked for. And all he'd do would be take, and take, and take, as he had done for so many years. With Mikael, she finally got a taste of what was normal and respectful. He treated her fairly and he was twice the man Jared was.Or thought he was.Kane saw her before Jared. She looked at the back of his head and was surprised by what she felt, which was nothing at all. It was funny how a few days ago, she would've killed for such a moment.Jared turned around to face her. His eyes lit up at the sight of her. "Kiera," he said. She felt Simone come up behind her. It strengthened her resolve, knowing that she had two of her favorite people by her side. Kane never liked Jared and neither did Simone but they respected their decision. She hated that it took her so long to see what they saw. Jared took advantage of her fragility and her proverbial need for love and affection. He took her heart and he crushed it in his hand when he slept with that woman, and he was unapologetic about it too. She wondered what he wanted. No, why wonder? Why should she wonder when she could ask him outright? So it was exactly what she did. "What are you doing here, Jared? I thought we agreed that it was all over between us. Or are you here for another reason?"Jared looked uneasily back at Kane and then over her shoulder at Simone. His hazel eyes were filled with confusion. She almost felt pity for him. Almost. "Can we talk in private?"She gestured around the kitchen. "This is private."He furrowed his brows. "You know what I mean, Kiera.""No, I don't. I don't know what you mean at all. Days ago you told me that being with me was a big waste of time and that you were glad to be rid of me. You ridiculed me and you compared me to that woman you were cheating on me with. Where is she? Why aren't you there with her? Why are you here?"He once again looked at Kane and Simone. He was more bothered by their presence than her words, which was pretty significant. He said, "If we had some privacy, I could explain to you exactly what I'm doing here. It doesn't have to be like this. I know I hurt you.""You don't know anything," she told him. Her teeth were gritted and her eyes were narrowed. A wave of anger was rising within her, not unlike the anger Mikael felt when the man bumped into her and spoke to her rudely. "You're used to fucking it all up and then coming back to me as if nothing happened, expecting a full pardon for your sins. Not this time, Jared. I'm sick of you and your disrespectful behavior. I deserve better. I am getting better treatment."Kane's eyes widened a little and Jared's face changed completely. They weren't used to hearing her talk like that. She personally wasn't used to it. She didn't know where all the strength came from but she liked it. She was loving every second of it."What's that supposed to mean?" he asked, his nostrils flaring. "We fight and you go running to some prick for comfort, is that what you're doing? It was a slight misunderstanding.""It was a breakup," she said, astounded by his lies. How did she believe them for so long? She truly was lost. And desperate. And pathetic. It was the reason why Jared never respected her, she saw that now. How would he respect her when she didn't even respect herself?"Kiera—" he began, but she interrupted him."You broke up with me. And don't you call him a prick, you don't know him. You've never met him. The only prick here is you. Get out of my house! I won't ask again!"He stood from the stool and he nearly stumbled as he tried to approach her. It was pitiful. "Kiera, just hear me out. She was a mistake. She had me wrapped around her finger. I know it's something shitty to say but I want to be transparent with you as I always have been. I could've kept our affair a secret but lying to you was killing me, alright? It was poisoning me. But after I told you, it wasn't the same between us. You know why? It's because I realized that nobody else matters to me like you do. It was a mistake, one I'll regret for the rest of my life, even if you do take me back. We can work something out. I'm willing to work, Kiera. I'm willing to do anything you want me to.""Are you?" she asked, ignoring everything else he said. "Are you really?""Yes," he said, relief flooding his expression."Get out, then," she barked. "Do me a favor and get the hell out of my sight!""What?" Jared asked. "Get out," she repeated. "It's over between us. Get that through your head. It's. Over. I've finally realized that you were never good for me. I was an idiot all along. You knew it, she knew, hell, everyone knew!""You don't know what you're talking about," Jared insisted. He looked at her up and then down and took all of her in. "You're not making any sense. I don't even recognize you!"Kiera looked at Kane. He looked ready for just about anything. She contemplated what to do. She could ask Jared once again to leave or she could nod at Kane and let him do the dirty work. Kane was more than capable of escorting Jared out. She honestly still couldn't believe that he was in her kitchen saying such preposterous things to her. She couldn't wrap her head around the fact that she had told him to leave and that she meant what she said. She meant every word.Wasn't it funny that he showed up just when she was prepared to move on? She hadn't expected to see him ever again
The week passed slowly for Kiera. The good news was that she finally caught up and it made her so excited about her progress that she felt she deserved a trip around the world. Of course, the thought was a mere fantasy. She couldn't leave even if she wanted to, which she didn't. Nothing would keep her from going on the second date with Mikael. She considered it their second date because the first one was merely him being kind. It was at the sushi restaurant where it all started for them. Well, a little before that, but when she sat across from him that night, his intentions were clear to her. It was Friday. She had one more day to go. It was almost torture, having to wait for so long. He was the only thing on her mind and she fantasized about telling him exactly how she felt. But he hadn't called her and so she felt that she should follow his lead. If she were a different woman, perhaps she would have called him instead of waiting around. Maybe it was what he wanted or had hoped for
Kiera backed away and stumbled. She fell to the ground. She hardly felt the pain of the impact. Her head was too occupied with the figure she saw near the door and how terrible it was to behold. She struggled into a sitting position and when she looked at the door again, it was gone. The doorway was clear and there was nothing in sight. She looked around frantically. Had it gotten inside the house? Suddenly, the lights were switched on and they bathed the living room with light. She saw Simone and Kane emerging from the kitchen. Simone looked like she was preparing to go to bed and Kane looked disturbed, somehow. And agitated. He neared her and asked, "What's the matter? What happened?"She pointed at the doorway. "There was something there. I saw something.""Why were the lights off?" Simone remarked, looking around suspiciously. She neared Kiera and knelt beside her. She touched her forehead and then turned to her son once more. "Kane, why was the front door open?""I don't know,
Mikael kissed her hand. He didn't take his eyes off her face. Kiera had waited the entire day for this moment. She looked into his eyes and felt her heart swell with love for him. Love and adoration among other things. She had her coat tucked under her left arm and for a second, she was vividly aware of immediate her surroundings. How his lips felt against her skin, how the soft material of the coat tickled her inner arm, how the wind ruffled her hair, and how the air tasted when she sucked it in through her teeth. His scent invaded her nostrils. It made her feel dizzy. "Kiera," he said softly. "You don't know how long I've waited for this moment. You look absolutely stunning.""Thank you," she said, looking down at her outfit as if she didn't know what she was wearing when she bought the dress online specifically for the special occasion. "You look great, too.""Thank you," he said. "Ready?" Kiera nodded eagerly and he opened the door for her. He was driving another car today. It
Kiera stares at Mikael in disbelief. She wasn't sure if she had heard him correctly. He was looking at her expectantly with a smile on his lips so maybe he saw that her hesitance was confusion and not her rejecting him. "What?" she asked finally. The word felt silly as it fell from her lips but she didn't know what else to say. She needed some time to digest his words. "I know it's perplexing to you but to me, it makes perfect sense," he explained. "Everything with you in it makes sense to me, Kiera."She stared at her feet. She tried to organize her thoughts to speak. She then said, "What are you asking me, Mikael? Are you asking me to be your...girlfriend?" "Yes," he said, "although 'girlfriend' is too light a word. I want us to be more than what we are right now. I want to be able to see and talk to you every day without it seeing strange or inappropriate. I want to get to know you better but I want there to be a commitment between us. Do you accept my offer?"After a moment, K
Kiera had once fallen into a public swimming pool when she was six years old. The feeling was indescribable. She was young and helpless and everything about the moment terrified her although she got over the fear eventually when she grew up and learned how to swim. She was sinking lower and lower and her flailing limbs were of no assistance to her. Oxygen was leaving her lungs quickly and she soon ran out of air. There hadn't been time to cry for help. She fell in and she kept falling. She looked up and she saw how blue everything was from beneath the surface. She saw the legs of the other swimmers and she even saw toys at the bottom of the pool. It was one toy—a cheap red plastic car. She didn't know why she noticed it. She just did. She was rescued by a stranger, someone who had seen her fall. She wasn't sure how long she was in the pool before the person reached her, but to her, it felt like she had been under the water for ages. Water hadn't gotten in her lungs, thankfully, and
Kiera woke up with a terrible feeling in her stomach. Her nose was runny (as expected) and her head was pounding. It wasn't because of the wine she drank, she was actually sick. She had a feeling that falling into the cold water would make her ill and she ignored Simone's warning. She had told her to take a warm shower and dress warmly but she stood in the middle of the bathroom for what felt like hours and stared at her reflection in the mirror. She began to doubt everything. She didn't even know who she was. It was incredible how she went from feeling confident, beautiful, and wanted to feeling dejected and unmotivated. So she ignored Simone's warning and ended up waking up sick. Oh well. Worst things had happened to her.She couldn't bear to think about Mikael. It physically pained her. Everything about the previous evening was tainted to her. She no longer saw the beauty of their exchanges. She began seeing everything with different eyes and although she hadn't concluded anythin
Kiera approached the gate slowly. She ran out without even bothering to think about what she was wearing, which were old pajamas that were not in the slightest flattering. She had slippers on her feet and her hair wasn't combed or anything. It was too late to turn back around, though. Mikael was looking at her in a way she couldn't describe. His eyes were hooded and he looked like he hadn't slept a wink last night. It made her feel immediately guilty but she stopped herself before she went down another spiral of self-hatred. She didn't know what he was doing at her gate or what he wanted to say to her. It was risky to assume that he was coming to apologize. She tapped the button next to the intercom and the gate opened. She was sure that Simone would wonder where she had gone but she couldn't wait for her to return. Her bedroom was on the other side of the house. Mikael stood up straight once they were standing face to face. He glanced at her clothes and her face burned. She said
Kiera sat back in her chair and sighed. The sun was warm, a little too warm, but the one thing she loved about the sun was how it had the capacity of making her forget the cold days. It was almost as if the horrors she endured never even happened. The only reminder that they did was the empty space in her heart that belonged to Kane, and that would forever remain vacant. It took her a long time to feel normal again, even after finding out that Simone and Mikael hadn’t died that day. It was all a big shock to her, and although she had every reason to feel normal, she didn’t. She couldn’t get the image of Celia’s body out of her mind, and it was strange that that was the scene that haunted her the most, apart from the two of them cutting her neck with a knife and leaving behind a scar that she would bear forever. With Simone and Mikael’s help, though, she began feeling better. Leaving town helped. In fact, the change of atmosphere and the drastic improvement of the weather was enough
The hours passed. Kiera was growing more uncomfortable than ever. She didn't know what they wanted from her, not anymore. At first, she thought that they were going to kill her. Now, it felt like they wanted to torture her with the sight of Celia. He kept insisting that it was her fault that the whole thing happened. He didn't do much apart from repeating the same words over and over again. It was torturous. They sky was getting much darker, and soon, she wouldn't be able to see. The sky was moonless and heavy with clouds. The rain stopped, but the night was cool. She knew it would rain again. She could smell it in the air. What were they waiting for? What did they want from her? It was harder not knowing what would happen, she realized that now. If they had told her what the intended to do with her—explicitly—she would know what to expect. But it seemed like they were all crazy. She was surprised that two men managed to cause so much damage. Celia hadn't lifted a finger. She cou
Kiera was in the dark for a long time. Her eyes were hot and heavy with tears. It was bizarre how much things had changed in the space of five minutes. One minute, they were all there; alive and well. The other, they were gone. Simone was gone. She didn't know what happened to her, or where they took the car. She should have acted quicker when she found the man in the shop suspicious. Her own inability to act condemned her. She should have checked Mikael to see if he was alive. She shouldn't have panicked the way she did. Now, it was too late. She didn't know what to think anymore. She was being driven to a place far away without anyone around her that could possibly save her. She thought about it, but her thoughts were as hollow as her. She couldn't hold onto them and attach importance to them. They were just flowing through her like water. She would be at their mercy, and she didn't even know who they were. She suspected that it had to do with the pack Simone destroyed, the DarkWa
It was time to go. They left the next day. Simone was far from recovered, but she insisted that they didn’t have much time left. They had to go. Kiera packed what she could with Mikael’s help, and it was harder to say goodbye to the house she grew up in. She didn’t know how long she would be gone for, but it was unlikely that she would be back anytime soon. The house had traces of Kane wherever she looked, and that was the hardest part. It felt like she was leaving a part of him behind. She didn’t know if Simone felt the same way. If she did, she didn’t show. Her determination to leave overpowered everything else. She looked around, at the pictures and paintings on the wall, and the holes that he made the other night when he put the boards up that were never filled. Her father’s office was impossible to look at. It was no longer her father’s, not in her heart. It belonged to Kane. There was nothing that she could bring with her that would fill the hole of leaving everything behind.
Simone was discharged in the morning, as she expected. A large potion the forest had caught fire. It was all over the news, and all everyone talked about. Kiera felt bad. Of course, she did. They were responsible for the forest fire, which claimed a few innocent lives of the people trying to put it out. To know that they were the ones who caused the whole mess was disheartening, and her heart weighed with guilt. There was a small chance that Celia had escaped. They couldn’t be sure about the others. Mikael mentioned that there was no chance that she escaped, and that was a relief for Kiera. She was finally out of their lives, and the worst was behind them. Having Simone and Mikael in the same house was strange. They hadn’t talked to each other when Kiera first brought her, and that was the part that made her grind her teeth. She didn’t know what she thought would happen but the silence was unsettling. They didn’t have to talk, and even if they did, what would they say to each other
They got out safely. All three of them. Simone was hurt, though. Celia had managed to scratch her with her talons before they got out. She was bleeding heavily, so Kiera drove her to the nearest hospital as soon as they reached the car. Mikael was collapsed beside her, but he wasn’t hurt. He was so weak he could barely sit up. Behind them, the fire raged. Simone would be alright. She had been injured and needed stitches and bed rest. Mikael refused to go to the hospital. He insisted that all he needed was a decent meal and some sleep, far away from a hospital. He didn’t have documents, so he couldn’t even be admitted in one. So, once Kiera was sure that Simone would be safe, she drove him to their house. They didn’t speak to each other. There was nothing to say for the time being. Kiera had a lot on her mind. She wanted to fetch Simone as soon as she could. The next morning, preferably. The hospital was too close to the pack house. She wasn’t all that safe there. Once they reache
"Mikael, is that you?" Kiera said. He was silent for a few seconds, and then he answered, "It's me."The first thing she noticed was how weak he sounded, and then she concluded why. He was hanging from the roof. She suddenly remembered what she had been told about him. He would be killed for trying to protect her, and he was being kept as a prisoner and awaited execution in the home of some werewolves. These guys. She never thought about it. It slipped from her mind completely. Her first instinct was to rush to him to help him. He had to get down, that wasn't up for debate. In the dark, she was practically blind. Even if there was a light switch in the barn, they couldn't use it. They would grab unwanted attention. She would have to work in the dark. "What do I do?" she asked him. "Cut me loose.""Simone, I need a knife," she said, trying to reach the rope above his head. She couldn't reach for it even when she stood on the tips of her toes. It was making her desperate. "I'll do
The day went by slowly, too slowly. Kiera was stiff from having to sit in the car for so many hours. Simone was adamant. She didn't want to leave, and Kiera wouldn't waste her time in trying to convince her to leave the front of the building. They were running out of time, and they didn't have a better plan. So they were forced to stay. When the day was over, Kiera could hardly move. Her anxiety was making matters worse, but she managed to sit up when people started trickling out of the building. Their eyes were wide and searching every face that walked out. They were looking for the man responsible for Kane's death. They couldn't lose him, or all their efforts would have been for nothing. That was worse to Kiera than having to fight the man. "There," Simone said, breaking the silence. It was the first word that she said in hours. Her voice was surprisingly clear. He began crossing the street, and in a few steps, he would disappear around the bend. Where was he going? They had to k
Simone was thoughtful for the rest of the day. Kiera had no choice but to wait for what she was going to say. A decision had to be made, and quickly, or they'd lose their advantage. News about the dead werewolf would spread soon, and then they'd all know that Simone was after the wolves who had been involved in Kane's death. If that happened, they would go into hiding, and finding them would be a lot more difficult. Simone remained silent, so Kiera couldn't do anything else but wait. Long periods of silence made her think about Kane all of the time. She didn’t know what else to do. The current situation was impeding her from doing anything else, and it was hard to imagine that a few months prior, she was concerned about not finishing her work. She forgot all about being an editor. If they placed a manuscript in front of her, she wouldn’t know what to do. But she wasn’t the only one who changed drastically. She couldn’t recognize Simone on most days. The sweet but tough woman was r
