Kiera opened the door and Simone was immediately upon her.
"Where were you?" she asked angrily.Kiera looked at her with a guilty expression. Simone had her hands on her hips and was looking at her expectantly. Kiera knew how upset she got when she didn't give her word for hours on end. "I-"Simone interrupted her. "You disappear with a stranger and don't even bother to answer your phone! Do you know how anxious I've been? I sent Kane after you. He still isn't back. I'll have to call him to tell him you're home."Her phone. She hadn't checked it since she left the station. It made her feel worse. "I'm sorry, Simone. I should've called. It's just that the man who accompanied me to the station invited me for lunch and I lost track of time."She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. It was almost comical. "You mean the one who rescued you last night.""Yes, him. I'm glad you remember.""I'm old but not that old if that's what you're implying." It wasn't, but there was no arguing with Simone when she was in a bad mood. "And he dropped you off here.""Of course," she said. "Call Kane. Tell him I'm sorry for not answering his calls." She understood where they were coming from and she appreciated the concern. They meant no harm.Simone shook her head in disapproval. "I'll let him know."Once Simone turned her back to her, Kiera breathed properly again. She made her way upstairs. In her room, she peeled her clothes off and immediately dressed in something more comfortable; a satin nightgown and its matching robe. She sat in front of her computer and for the first time in weeks, she actually got some work done and made plenty of progress. The lunch with Mikael was refreshing. She had been miserable for the past few weeks because of the breakup with Jared and so working was the farthest thing from her mind. She had been neglecting her responsibilities and the worst part about it all was that she couldn't do anything else if she didn't get her work done and since she wasn't doing much, she couldn't do anything else. Her all-time favorite hobby—which was reading—was practically abandoned. She hadn't picked up a book in a long time, way before the whole situation with Jared started. If she caught up (unlikely that it would be anytime soon but oh well) she could finish the books on her list and buy a bigger comfort pile. Yes, it was a good plan. And it made her work harder than ever.A knock on her door after many hours of editing interrupted her train of thought. She whirled around in her chair and cracked her knuckles. Kane was standing there with his arms folded. "Have I interrupted?""No," she said, even though he had. "Come on in. What can I do for you?"He closed the door. "Oh, I just thought I'd talk to you for a little bit. We haven't seen each other in quite some time.""Yes, true," she answered. "Look, I want to apologize for what happened earlier. I got distracted and checking my phone for calls never crossed my mind."Kane put his hands up. "You don't have to apologize to me, Kiera. I figured you were busy. Ma's just overprotective. She cares a lot about you, you know.""I know," she nodded. "It's the reason why I feel so guilty. She means no harm whatsoever.""Yeah," he said and rubbed his jaw. For a split second, he looked like a masculine version of Simone, and then he looked back up and it was gone. Kiera had no clue who Kane's father was but she was certain that Kane looked exactly like him. There wasn't a striking resemblance between him and his mother. Kane was darker in tone and his hair was almost as dark as a moonless sky. Simone was pale and her hair was chestnut brown. He arched his bushy eyebrows when he caught her studying him. "Something wrong?""No," she chuckled, "I was just thinking about how you don't look like Simone at all. Nothing important."He nodded and pushed his hair back. "Yeah, I get that a lot.""I know," she said and smiled. She quickly changed the subject. "How's your new job? You know Simone doesn't talk about it much. Well, not much. At all. Are you keeping it a secret?""Not quite," he said. "It's nothing remarkable. I'm the head butcher at this factory. I know it sounds plain but it's lucrative. Pays better than what I was doing here.""Oh," she said. The thought of butchering animals for a living made her feel a certain way. Not squeamish, just off. She shuddered and Kane laughed."That bad?""A little," she admitted. They laughed together for a few more seconds and then they stared at each other's faces silently."Ma told me about you and that stranger," he said. She waited for him to get to his point. "She also told me about the bad breakup with, what was his name again? Jason?""Jared," she said softly."Yeah.""Well," she said after a beat. "All we had was lunch. There isn't much to say about him. He helped me last night and he was kind enough to accompany me to the station.""I wouldn't say kind," he commented. "He's clearly interested in you if he asked you to have lunch with him. I would know."Kiera couldn't help but blush. "No, I'm sure it isn't that. He's just kind, that's all. I'm not looking for anything either."She wasn't sure why she was lying to Jared. She never felt the need to keep secrets from him. He was like a big brother to her; he was exactly eight years older than her. They were born on the same day, September the twenty-first. She was only ten when he left for college so she spent most of her teen years alone, but in her heart, he would always be someone she would forever cherish.Kane shrugged. "If you say so. I'll take your car to a mechanic tomorrow. They'll get the window fixed and paint over that scratch. Sounds okay?""It's perfect," she said. "Thank you."He stood up and she had to look up to keep staring at his face. He was quite tall—he was Simone's son, after all. He studied her face for a few beats and then said, "You should invite him over one of these days. We'd like to thank him properly for helping you last night."Kiera had no response for him. He walked out of her bedroom and closed the door behind him. She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. She didn't like how he and Simone were pestering her about Mikael but then again, she understood their concern. But even though she felt that Mikael was as interested in her as she was in him (bold), she still felt like it was too soon to have expectations or even initiate anything. And as much as she wanted to use someone to erase Jared from her memory, she knew she wasn't ready to get into a relationship. The thought of entering a relationship with Mikael warmed her heart and soul but she ignored the feeling. She was an adult. She had to be responsible. She returned to work but was once again interrupted. This time, however, it was her phone ringing and not a knock on the door. She grabbed her phone without peeling her eyes off her computer screen and then she saw Mikael's name flashing on the screen of her phone. Yes, she had saved his phone number. Her heart dropped to the pit of her stomach and fluttered there. He was calling her. She could hardly believe it.She slid her thumb across the screen and took a deep breath before saying the word, "Hi.""Kiera," he said warmly. It sent shivers down her spine, the way he said her name. She could imagine him lying down on his bed (it was already late) with his arm on the pillow above his head. "I'm sorry for calling.""Why are you sorry?" she asked, typing a few random words and then deleting them. She had to keep her hands busy or she'd have a panic attack. She tried to keep her voice even and her tone low."It's late," he explained. "You're probably busy with the work you said you needed to catch up on.""I'm already done," she said, although that was far from the truth. "Don't worry about it. You're not interrupting. At all."He sighed and she once again trembled. "I know I said I'd see you on Saturday," she felt momentarily disappointed, "but the truth is that I can't get you out of my head. Saturday feels an eternity away. I'm not sure if I'm making sense to you. You'll tell me to stop if you want me to, won't you?""Don't stop," she said hurriedly. She was growing more breathless with each passing minute. She knew she had to say something so he knew that she felt the same way. She knew the right thing to do would be to push him away because she was heartbroken and not in the right state of mind but she couldn't deny her attraction toward him. "I feel the same way.""I'm glad," he said. She expected him to say more but he changed the subject. "I want to get to know you better. I think I told you this earlier.""Me, too," she said, glancing at the door for no particular reason. She had the feeling that someone was standing on the other side and listening to her conversation with him. She quickly brushed the feeling off."Good," he said. "Can I take you out for dinner tomorrow?""You can," she nodded. They spoke a bit more about the timing and then he hung up. She stared at her phone as butterflies fluttered around in her belly. She turned back to her computer but she was no longer in the mood to work. How would she concentrate on editing when she had him on her mind? She couldn't afford to make mistakes in the manuscript. She'd most definitely lose her job if she did. So she logged off and turned her computer off. She didn't want to work. What she wanted to do was lie in bed and think about Mikael and how his unexpected phone and words made her feel. The feeling was mutual. There was nothing sweeter than that.Kiera turned the lights off and crawled under the covers. In the dark, her room became whatever she wanted it to be. She stared at the blank ceiling and then closed her eyes. She saw Mikael and his charming smile. She felt her lips stretch into a smile to mimic him. She was certain that anyone who walked in on her would think she was crazy. And maybe that was exactly what she was.For Mikael, she wouldn't mind.Kiera woke up in the morning somewhat disoriented. Sunlight was streaming through the window she forgot to close last night and the sun was in her face. As much as she loved the sun, she hated it when she didn't close her curtains. She got up from bed and closed it although she usually opened it in the mornings. She checked the time on the alarm clock on her nightstand and saw that it was a little past ten. She was filled to the brim with optimism after Mikael's call but now she was hesitant and a little concerned. She had neglected her work for too long and she knew that sooner or later, she'd be let go if she didn't do something about it. She slacked off for too long. She was supposed to make the most of the week to really catch up but she had dinner with Mikael. She couldn't and wouldn't cancel on him—she was eager to see him and nothing would stop her, not even the threat of losing her job, but she had to get a grip on herself and not spend the afternoon thinking about him as sh
Mikael parked in front of her house. They were silent for a long time. Ever since they left the restaurant, to be precise. It wasn't that what he did scared her or anything, it was something else. Something she couldn't put her finger on. After a beat, he said, "I'm sorry about what happened. I lost my mind when he spoke to you that way. I know I shouldn't have done it but it was stronger than me. I can't describe the feeling."Kiera placed her hand on his arm. "Don't apologize."It was odd to her that they were only talking about the incident after they left the restaurant. When the red-faced man left, they were escorted to their seats and apart from the occasional glance from strangers, it was almost as if nothing had happened. They talked about random topics throughout the night and she got to know a little bit more about him. But even though they spent three hours in each other's company, he was still a complete stranger to her. They didn't talk about what the man said to her (w
"What?" Jared asked. "Get out," she repeated. "It's over between us. Get that through your head. It's. Over. I've finally realized that you were never good for me. I was an idiot all along. You knew it, she knew, hell, everyone knew!""You don't know what you're talking about," Jared insisted. He looked at her up and then down and took all of her in. "You're not making any sense. I don't even recognize you!"Kiera looked at Kane. He looked ready for just about anything. She contemplated what to do. She could ask Jared once again to leave or she could nod at Kane and let him do the dirty work. Kane was more than capable of escorting Jared out. She honestly still couldn't believe that he was in her kitchen saying such preposterous things to her. She couldn't wrap her head around the fact that she had told him to leave and that she meant what she said. She meant every word.Wasn't it funny that he showed up just when she was prepared to move on? She hadn't expected to see him ever again
The week passed slowly for Kiera. The good news was that she finally caught up and it made her so excited about her progress that she felt she deserved a trip around the world. Of course, the thought was a mere fantasy. She couldn't leave even if she wanted to, which she didn't. Nothing would keep her from going on the second date with Mikael. She considered it their second date because the first one was merely him being kind. It was at the sushi restaurant where it all started for them. Well, a little before that, but when she sat across from him that night, his intentions were clear to her. It was Friday. She had one more day to go. It was almost torture, having to wait for so long. He was the only thing on her mind and she fantasized about telling him exactly how she felt. But he hadn't called her and so she felt that she should follow his lead. If she were a different woman, perhaps she would have called him instead of waiting around. Maybe it was what he wanted or had hoped for
Kiera backed away and stumbled. She fell to the ground. She hardly felt the pain of the impact. Her head was too occupied with the figure she saw near the door and how terrible it was to behold. She struggled into a sitting position and when she looked at the door again, it was gone. The doorway was clear and there was nothing in sight. She looked around frantically. Had it gotten inside the house? Suddenly, the lights were switched on and they bathed the living room with light. She saw Simone and Kane emerging from the kitchen. Simone looked like she was preparing to go to bed and Kane looked disturbed, somehow. And agitated. He neared her and asked, "What's the matter? What happened?"She pointed at the doorway. "There was something there. I saw something.""Why were the lights off?" Simone remarked, looking around suspiciously. She neared Kiera and knelt beside her. She touched her forehead and then turned to her son once more. "Kane, why was the front door open?""I don't know,
Mikael kissed her hand. He didn't take his eyes off her face. Kiera had waited the entire day for this moment. She looked into his eyes and felt her heart swell with love for him. Love and adoration among other things. She had her coat tucked under her left arm and for a second, she was vividly aware of immediate her surroundings. How his lips felt against her skin, how the soft material of the coat tickled her inner arm, how the wind ruffled her hair, and how the air tasted when she sucked it in through her teeth. His scent invaded her nostrils. It made her feel dizzy. "Kiera," he said softly. "You don't know how long I've waited for this moment. You look absolutely stunning.""Thank you," she said, looking down at her outfit as if she didn't know what she was wearing when she bought the dress online specifically for the special occasion. "You look great, too.""Thank you," he said. "Ready?" Kiera nodded eagerly and he opened the door for her. He was driving another car today. It
Kiera stares at Mikael in disbelief. She wasn't sure if she had heard him correctly. He was looking at her expectantly with a smile on his lips so maybe he saw that her hesitance was confusion and not her rejecting him. "What?" she asked finally. The word felt silly as it fell from her lips but she didn't know what else to say. She needed some time to digest his words. "I know it's perplexing to you but to me, it makes perfect sense," he explained. "Everything with you in it makes sense to me, Kiera."She stared at her feet. She tried to organize her thoughts to speak. She then said, "What are you asking me, Mikael? Are you asking me to be your...girlfriend?" "Yes," he said, "although 'girlfriend' is too light a word. I want us to be more than what we are right now. I want to be able to see and talk to you every day without it seeing strange or inappropriate. I want to get to know you better but I want there to be a commitment between us. Do you accept my offer?"After a moment, K
Kiera had once fallen into a public swimming pool when she was six years old. The feeling was indescribable. She was young and helpless and everything about the moment terrified her although she got over the fear eventually when she grew up and learned how to swim. She was sinking lower and lower and her flailing limbs were of no assistance to her. Oxygen was leaving her lungs quickly and she soon ran out of air. There hadn't been time to cry for help. She fell in and she kept falling. She looked up and she saw how blue everything was from beneath the surface. She saw the legs of the other swimmers and she even saw toys at the bottom of the pool. It was one toy—a cheap red plastic car. She didn't know why she noticed it. She just did. She was rescued by a stranger, someone who had seen her fall. She wasn't sure how long she was in the pool before the person reached her, but to her, it felt like she had been under the water for ages. Water hadn't gotten in her lungs, thankfully, and
Kiera sat back in her chair and sighed. The sun was warm, a little too warm, but the one thing she loved about the sun was how it had the capacity of making her forget the cold days. It was almost as if the horrors she endured never even happened. The only reminder that they did was the empty space in her heart that belonged to Kane, and that would forever remain vacant. It took her a long time to feel normal again, even after finding out that Simone and Mikael hadn’t died that day. It was all a big shock to her, and although she had every reason to feel normal, she didn’t. She couldn’t get the image of Celia’s body out of her mind, and it was strange that that was the scene that haunted her the most, apart from the two of them cutting her neck with a knife and leaving behind a scar that she would bear forever. With Simone and Mikael’s help, though, she began feeling better. Leaving town helped. In fact, the change of atmosphere and the drastic improvement of the weather was enough
The hours passed. Kiera was growing more uncomfortable than ever. She didn't know what they wanted from her, not anymore. At first, she thought that they were going to kill her. Now, it felt like they wanted to torture her with the sight of Celia. He kept insisting that it was her fault that the whole thing happened. He didn't do much apart from repeating the same words over and over again. It was torturous. They sky was getting much darker, and soon, she wouldn't be able to see. The sky was moonless and heavy with clouds. The rain stopped, but the night was cool. She knew it would rain again. She could smell it in the air. What were they waiting for? What did they want from her? It was harder not knowing what would happen, she realized that now. If they had told her what the intended to do with her—explicitly—she would know what to expect. But it seemed like they were all crazy. She was surprised that two men managed to cause so much damage. Celia hadn't lifted a finger. She cou
Kiera was in the dark for a long time. Her eyes were hot and heavy with tears. It was bizarre how much things had changed in the space of five minutes. One minute, they were all there; alive and well. The other, they were gone. Simone was gone. She didn't know what happened to her, or where they took the car. She should have acted quicker when she found the man in the shop suspicious. Her own inability to act condemned her. She should have checked Mikael to see if he was alive. She shouldn't have panicked the way she did. Now, it was too late. She didn't know what to think anymore. She was being driven to a place far away without anyone around her that could possibly save her. She thought about it, but her thoughts were as hollow as her. She couldn't hold onto them and attach importance to them. They were just flowing through her like water. She would be at their mercy, and she didn't even know who they were. She suspected that it had to do with the pack Simone destroyed, the DarkWa
It was time to go. They left the next day. Simone was far from recovered, but she insisted that they didn’t have much time left. They had to go. Kiera packed what she could with Mikael’s help, and it was harder to say goodbye to the house she grew up in. She didn’t know how long she would be gone for, but it was unlikely that she would be back anytime soon. The house had traces of Kane wherever she looked, and that was the hardest part. It felt like she was leaving a part of him behind. She didn’t know if Simone felt the same way. If she did, she didn’t show. Her determination to leave overpowered everything else. She looked around, at the pictures and paintings on the wall, and the holes that he made the other night when he put the boards up that were never filled. Her father’s office was impossible to look at. It was no longer her father’s, not in her heart. It belonged to Kane. There was nothing that she could bring with her that would fill the hole of leaving everything behind.
Simone was discharged in the morning, as she expected. A large potion the forest had caught fire. It was all over the news, and all everyone talked about. Kiera felt bad. Of course, she did. They were responsible for the forest fire, which claimed a few innocent lives of the people trying to put it out. To know that they were the ones who caused the whole mess was disheartening, and her heart weighed with guilt. There was a small chance that Celia had escaped. They couldn’t be sure about the others. Mikael mentioned that there was no chance that she escaped, and that was a relief for Kiera. She was finally out of their lives, and the worst was behind them. Having Simone and Mikael in the same house was strange. They hadn’t talked to each other when Kiera first brought her, and that was the part that made her grind her teeth. She didn’t know what she thought would happen but the silence was unsettling. They didn’t have to talk, and even if they did, what would they say to each other
They got out safely. All three of them. Simone was hurt, though. Celia had managed to scratch her with her talons before they got out. She was bleeding heavily, so Kiera drove her to the nearest hospital as soon as they reached the car. Mikael was collapsed beside her, but he wasn’t hurt. He was so weak he could barely sit up. Behind them, the fire raged. Simone would be alright. She had been injured and needed stitches and bed rest. Mikael refused to go to the hospital. He insisted that all he needed was a decent meal and some sleep, far away from a hospital. He didn’t have documents, so he couldn’t even be admitted in one. So, once Kiera was sure that Simone would be safe, she drove him to their house. They didn’t speak to each other. There was nothing to say for the time being. Kiera had a lot on her mind. She wanted to fetch Simone as soon as she could. The next morning, preferably. The hospital was too close to the pack house. She wasn’t all that safe there. Once they reache
"Mikael, is that you?" Kiera said. He was silent for a few seconds, and then he answered, "It's me."The first thing she noticed was how weak he sounded, and then she concluded why. He was hanging from the roof. She suddenly remembered what she had been told about him. He would be killed for trying to protect her, and he was being kept as a prisoner and awaited execution in the home of some werewolves. These guys. She never thought about it. It slipped from her mind completely. Her first instinct was to rush to him to help him. He had to get down, that wasn't up for debate. In the dark, she was practically blind. Even if there was a light switch in the barn, they couldn't use it. They would grab unwanted attention. She would have to work in the dark. "What do I do?" she asked him. "Cut me loose.""Simone, I need a knife," she said, trying to reach the rope above his head. She couldn't reach for it even when she stood on the tips of her toes. It was making her desperate. "I'll do
The day went by slowly, too slowly. Kiera was stiff from having to sit in the car for so many hours. Simone was adamant. She didn't want to leave, and Kiera wouldn't waste her time in trying to convince her to leave the front of the building. They were running out of time, and they didn't have a better plan. So they were forced to stay. When the day was over, Kiera could hardly move. Her anxiety was making matters worse, but she managed to sit up when people started trickling out of the building. Their eyes were wide and searching every face that walked out. They were looking for the man responsible for Kane's death. They couldn't lose him, or all their efforts would have been for nothing. That was worse to Kiera than having to fight the man. "There," Simone said, breaking the silence. It was the first word that she said in hours. Her voice was surprisingly clear. He began crossing the street, and in a few steps, he would disappear around the bend. Where was he going? They had to k
Simone was thoughtful for the rest of the day. Kiera had no choice but to wait for what she was going to say. A decision had to be made, and quickly, or they'd lose their advantage. News about the dead werewolf would spread soon, and then they'd all know that Simone was after the wolves who had been involved in Kane's death. If that happened, they would go into hiding, and finding them would be a lot more difficult. Simone remained silent, so Kiera couldn't do anything else but wait. Long periods of silence made her think about Kane all of the time. She didn’t know what else to do. The current situation was impeding her from doing anything else, and it was hard to imagine that a few months prior, she was concerned about not finishing her work. She forgot all about being an editor. If they placed a manuscript in front of her, she wouldn’t know what to do. But she wasn’t the only one who changed drastically. She couldn’t recognize Simone on most days. The sweet but tough woman was r
