VIOLET
It was as though I'd thrown away my courtesy after leaving Silver Moon. I rushed out again and was grateful to spot Mason's back, only a house away. "Mason!" I hollered, waving my right hand at him as he halted in his steps. Hurrying out, I quickly caught up with him. "Sorry for my manners, I don't know what's gotten over me lately," I sighed, tucking a lock of hair behind my ears. It was very windy. "This is the second time you're apologizing," he said observantly, his full eyebrows raised. "I know, I forgot to walk you—" I began to ramble. "God, no, Violet. It's the other way around, actually," Mason said, letting out a little chuckle. I could feel the color rising in my cheeks. If I was being honest, I was a bit embarrassed. "Okay then. I'll see you around," I managed to smile as I lowered my eyes. "You too, take care," he said. I quickly turned around, relieved to see him going. The aroma of roasted chicken greeted my nose as soon as I stepped into the kitchen, where my grandmother was preparing dinner. "Something smells nice in here," I said, taking a deep sniff and patting my stomach. "I'm glad you like it. Who was that at the door?" she asked, looking up from the vegetables she was washing. "The Alpha of your pack, or should I say Mason?" I replied, looking outside the window, away from her piercing gaze. "And?" Grandma Charlotte asked. The sound of rushing water and swishing sounds stopped. She was now looking at me intently. "Well, I think I've gotten myself into a tight spot. I told him I'm a caterer, and now he wants me to cook for the ball," I sighed, plucking a spinach leaf from its bunch. "You told him that? Why?" My grandmother's face was pulled into a confused look, her hands on her hips as she stared at me, a puzzled expression in her eyes. I knew I had to tell her the truth. She listened to me carefully as I spoke, nodding her head slowly and making small sounds of agreement. "You should be very careful in this pack," my grandmother warned, her voice sounding very firm. "I didn't know things were going to turn out this way. Honestly, if I'd known he was the Alpha, I don't think I'd have bothered saying anything about myself at all," I said sadly. "I know, I know. Don't try to make yourself too obvious," she placed her hands over mine, giving me a slight squeeze. Despite the cool air she put on, I could tell she was as tense as I was. "It'll be better to avoid Mason altogether. The last thing you want is for him to find out you're from Silver Moon, and their Luna for that matter." "I know," I agreed, wrapping my arms around my stomach. "Once he finds out you're pregnant with Adrian's child," Grandma Charlotte paused before letting out a sharp whistle, "he'll rip you apart. And that, my dear, you wouldn't want to happen to you." Letting out a shiver, I released a deep sigh and let my thoughts distract me. Grandma was right. Mason was nice and welcoming, but that was the part of him he showed to me. For all I knew, I could be sentenced to death by the same person if he knew I was from Silver Moon pack. The thought of him finding out never crossed my mind, but now that it did, I felt more skeptical than ever lest I get myself into a bigger problem. ****** **ADRIAN** I should have said more. I knew that, but even if I did, what were the odds he would want to listen to me? I wondered. My father was overreacting and using something important to me as collateral. I shut my eyes tight and leaned back against my chair. This wasn't the first or last time a member of the pack had decided to leave the pack. It wasn't often it happened, but it wasn't strange either. So what was his point exactly? The only reason he was adamant, I realized, was because Emily was in the picture. He had never liked Emily, so I wasn't totally surprised he would go against my being with her. But to go to this extent of using something important to the pack against me? "Oh, yes, sweet Emily," I heard Ares say. "Shut up," I scowled, rolling my eyes at his sarcastic comment. That was when I totally remembered her. Jerking from my seat, I scolded myself mentally, my thoughts now centered on her welfare. I didn't like abandoning Emily like I was doing. Since the previous day Reynold had called me, we hadn't spoken, much less seen each other. I felt bad for Emily a lot of times and wondered how she put up with my busy periods, not to mention those years when Violet and I were married. If I could turn back the hands of time, I would right all my wrongs to her. Grabbing my keys, a small smile fell on my lips. The thought of her alone was enough to make me happy. I felt a bit lonely sometimes, especially now that I was at loggerheads with my dad, and Ares was ignoring me. If that was the price to pay, then so be it. I'd done my best doing what my Wolf and my dad wanted. And as for the Moon Goddess, I had to give it to her for playing her cruel trick on me. If she'd just paired Emily with me, it would have saved everyone a lot of stress. Damn her! "Funny how you'll go the extra mile for Emily. Maybe, just maybe, if you'd paid this much care to Violet, you would have loved her," he said airily, but I could detect his anger. "Ares?" I called out to him but got no answer. If he was going to go on this way, then so be it.Stretching my legs, I heard a low rumbling sound from my stomach, like a bad engine trying to gear up. Instinctively, my hands stretched to my stomach and I rubbed it lovingly, the thought of a new life inside me bringing a smile to my face.A few months ago, I would have thought it was hunger, but now I was sure it was my baby. My precious baby."How are you feeling this morning? Don't worry, you'll be out soon," I said in a soothing voice to my stomach. I did that every day since I read that babies could respond to their mothers' voices even in the womb."You'll have your great-grandmother and me to take care of you." The thought of his father not being in the picture sounded a bit sad, but what could I do?"I'll take care of you to my fullest, even if it costs me my life," I added, remembering my grandmother's words about Mason. The thought of him ripping my baby away from me made me wrap my hands around my slightly swollen stomach, my protective instincts kicking in."I love you,
"She's new in the pack, let's give her some time to adjust. Please," Mason said in a low, gentle voice that spoke volumes of authority despite its tone.Rhoda, the aggressive lady, gave me a quick glance before nodding reluctantly. Letting out a sigh, I made a mental note to remember I was no longer a Luna and that I wasn't in my pack anymore. I found it difficult to bow to anyone since I was used to people bowing to me and because of that, I ended up causing tension.I sighed again. Glancing at Mason, I felt strangely grateful for his help."Thank you, Alpha," I mumbled as I strode past him, my grandmother now close behind me. I could feel her eyes boring into my head from behind.Acknowledging my apology with a slow blink, he called to his Beta, Hans, a slightly tall man with tired eyes that bore a scar above them and fast legs that made him look like he was in a hurry."Hans, take her to the ballroom and make sure she has everything she needs for preparations," Mason said briskly,
Violet's POVPouring all my attention into what I was doing, I prayed someone would call him away, what was he even coming towards here for anyway? I wondered angrily and in my anger, I mistakenly pricked my finger with a needle. "Ouch!" I winced shaking my wrists, now his cologne was closer, and even with my hair covering the sides of my face I could see him coming, Grandma Charlotte wasn't going to like this one bit. "Watcha doing?" He asked, his head a few inches away from mine, I could hear the smile in his voice. "Nothing," I said too quickly and his brows arched slightly, a glint of amusement he always seemed to possess lurking behind them. Facing him fully, I tucked my hair behind my ear"Fine I'm doing something, a lot actually" I agreed rolling my eyes and he chuckled. "You're doing a great job for sure. I've been watching you for some time and I can only say I'm impressed" I looked up at him and gone was the flirty look on his face ...he was serious and he'd also been
Mason's POVI found myself happier than usual. At first, I thought it was because of the upcoming ball, but somewhere deep down, I knew that wasn’t true. Last year, I’d also supervised the ball preparations and had been very restless. Yet today, I was grinning like a schoolboy. There was still something else about today...“Fold it again,” Violet said absently, stretching her hands towards me to grab a pair of scissors.Staring at her for some time, I carefully took note of how gracefully she carried herself. She spoke so carefully, like royalty, and her poise wasn’t something you could miss. It was elegant. Did caterers have a certain elegance to them? I wondered.“Don’t be silly. Of course, they don’t,” my wolf, Finn, said.“I wish we could solve this mystery,” he said, sounding thoughtful. I had to agree.“There’s just something about her,” I said through the mind link. “Like there’s more to her.” Immediately after I said it, I was surprised. When did I start making sappy statement
Inhaling the deep country air, I was grateful for the cool breeze that tousled my hair and the soothing calm sounds from swaying stalks of wheat as they danced to the wind.Breathing in, I let my mind wander off to Emily. It had been weeks since I'd seen her last, my brows furrowed as I remembered my promise to myself. Silently cursing, I wiped my forehead with my palms and sighed.I had little knowledge about her health status at the moment. It was one of those things Emily didn't like talking about, and because of that, she promised me not to ask about it except when we met face to face.Slouching against my seat, I stared up at the white ceiling, wondering what was taking the doctor so long. I'd arrived at home about two minutes ago and was told I couldn't see Emily right away because she was being examined.Trying to reduce my restlessness, which was a result of so many things, but one in particular, my dad's order for me to leave Emily...it was impossible, what he was asking for.
Mason's POVI found myself remembering her limp body that was carried away on a stretcher, a mix of emotions rushing through my body. I couldn't still get over the realization that she was pregnant. Was that why she came to the pack? Was she running away? These were questions I asked myself.I straightened my tie, and a tired-looking face with worry lines etched into my forehead greeted me. I bit my lips and rolled my eyes. Finn had been right all along; she had been hiding something. I knew I should probably be relieved that it was just a pregnancy instead of something more tragic, but...Glancing at my wristwatch, I glanced at my reflection again. Were the corners of my tuxedo uneven? I wondered as I tugged at them. Shaking my head at such absurdity, I left the dressing room. Following the sound of soft classical instruments, I soon found myself in the ballroom. The quiet chatters were now audible and no longer drowned in the music.Adjusting the sleeves of my tux, I slowly scanned
I woke up weak and tired. Opening my eyes, I let out a loud yawn, the back of my palms covering my mouth. The last thing I recalled was Mason lifting me up. I still couldn't remember how that had happened."Are you feeling better?" I jerked my head, surprised to find my grandmother sitting beside me, her eyes staring attentively at me. How long had she been there?"A bit tired," I yawned again. "What happened to me?" I managed to ask, now pulling my body into a sitting position."I think you were tired. You fainted at the pack house." Her lips pursed and I knew she had more to say. "You need rest," she added, yet I was convinced those weren't the words on her mind."You need to stop exerting yourself." She stretched her hands to my forehead, checking my temperature, then placed a thermometer into my mouth and brought it out."I know," I murmured, my eyes now heavy with dizziness as they fluttered."You know," she scoffed, "you know you should stay away from Mason, I believe?" She aske
Staring blankly at the corpse in front of me, I could barely outline its features to know who it belonged to. Reynold said it was Violet's, but I didn't want to believe it. Or at least I felt I shouldn't believe what I was seeing. My parents were equally as shocked as I was.The body had been brought to the park house for some sort of identification, on my father's wish, of course. I pinched my nose and looked away, hoping this body wouldn't end up haunting me in my dreams.Because of my doubt, Reynold had added that the body was found a few days after she'd fled the park. On hearing that, my chest had tightened hard, and for a moment I couldn't breathe properly... well, that was a few hours ago.Considering the speed I drove in, it was a miracle I'd managed to drive down to my parent's without getting involved in an accident. Now I sat in the drawing room with my parents, an unexplainable atmosphere hanging in the air and robbing all of us of our proper senses. I felt heavy and tired
