~Hunter

Azura's smile is tentative. She doesn't trust me.

I don't blame her. I'm a complete stranger in her own home, which I can't imagine is a common thing to happen here.

"Just point to the door if you want me to leave." I smooth my hand down my right leg, which is hurt the most by my back injury. "I just need a moment..."

Azura sits up a little, peeking over the edge of the table.

She points at my leg.

"Your brother shot me in the back. It's really affected this leg in particular," I explain, releasing a long breath. My skin is sticky from exertion, and the more I sit the more I don't want to get back up.

Azura winces, shaking her head a little. She doesn't seem surprised.

"I don't like him..." I tell her flatly. No point lying to her.

She smiles, looking down at her book of paintings. She doesn't seem to disagree, although there is something deeper in her smile, like she is sharing a private joke with herself.

"I like Taysa though. She seems nice," I add. I need to be nicer to Ta

I was instructed by Kaan to lay down on the grass and now I'm going through the painful process of trying to get to my feet.Sliding from the bed is one thing. Actually standing up entirely is a whole other battle. And it doesn't help that Kaan is staring down at me with his arms folded, his brows raised."Give me a second..." I mumble, trying to manoeuvre my legs under me so I can rest on them. The pain isn't even the difficult part to overcome. It's how weak my legs have become, how little they respond to my silent demands."You're overthinking. Use your legs," Kaan instructs.I glare at his boots, wishing he didn't feel obliged to help me. Regardless of how I feel about it, I'm letting him aid me in my recovery in hopes it gets me out of here quicker."Grab me if you need to," he murmurs, extending a hand.I ignore it."I'l

~HunterI stare down at the plate in front of me, trying to eat it as quickly as possible so I can go back to the room. Why Allira, Kaan's mother, insists on forcing me to attend these dinners is beyond me. ~HunterThe air is cold around me as I stalk as quickly toward the edge of the forest as fast I can.My legs and back collectively protest with each step, but I fight on. This is the first time I've left the manor since I got here a few weeks ago, and it feels great.Even if each step makes me feel like I'm about to collapse.Once I make it to the perimeter wall, I scale along it to find a side gate that staff use. Tay mentioned in passing that the lock is rusty and no one has bothered to replace it.I knock it loose and pass through with little issue.I pick my way carefully through the forest, trying to focus with the low lighting. The nearest village isn't too far from here, apparently, and I want to find out where Kaan is going, and what he's doing in the middle of the night."Following me?"I nearly scream, whirling around. Kaan emerges from behind a tree, smirking knowingly at me.Letting out a deep breath, I try calm my thundering heart. When did he figure out I was following h

~HunterI lean against the wall, trying not to throw up.Kaan must be having the same experience but for an entirely different reason…I just spent an unreasonable amount of time trekking back here to the castle with him. He’s drunk enough to be a nuisance, swaying back and forth as we walk, even worse than me.Because of his state, I had to grit my teeth and fight through the pain to make it back. We collectively collapsed about six times between us.I would be mortified if I wasn’t sure Kaan will forget this by tomorrow."I can't believe I'm helping you, I'm meant to be the injured one,” I remind him for the tenth time tonight, rubbing at a dirt stain on my pants. He stares me down with a lazy smirk, his deep brown hair slightly damp, hanging down over his eyes."Say the word, and I'll carry you."I roll my eyes, pushing off the wall. "You are barely even capable of keeping your head up. Now go into your room."His bedroom door is open, dousing the hallway with light. I haven’t look

Memories of it haunt me, although Kaan is definitely hurting more than me."I only agreed to this because you were cooking, and I much prefer that over whoever mother hired," he says, scattering some sliced fruit over the top of his stack of pancakes.I only agreed to this breakfast with Tay because I feel guilty about not being her friend."You look so hungover, Kaan," Tay notes, raising a brow at him.My cast slowly shifts over to him. For that reason, he doesn't want to disappoint her, and her dream for him to marry for love.I understand the sentiment. ~HunterI press my ear against my bedroom door, waiting for the signal. This meeting has been carefully orchestrated. This morning, just as the sun was spilling over the horizon, I snuck outside to the garden shed where I left a note tucked into some gardening gloves. There is no guarantee Edgar will have found the note, and will be coming to my room tonight, but I didn't know how else to do it casually. Now that I am to marry the Alpha, all eyes seem to be on me at all times.A single tap sounds against the door, right near my ear. Just like I instructed.I quickly open the door, letting him slip in. We shouldn't be disturbed, since it's so late, and there is a lot I need to get off my chest."Thank you for coming, I know it's a big risk for you," I murmur lowly, rubbing the back of my neck as I turn to him.He looks around the room, an unreadable expression on his face. I wonder if this reminds him of my room back home, except this is much larger, lighter and is missing my sister.M

~HunterI stare out across the crowd, feeling my breakfast churning uneasily in my stomach. The last time I stood before a crowd like this, my brother was being announced as Alpha, taking over my father's position. That day I felt sick to my stomach as well, but for an entirely different reason...Back then, I was angry that despite being older than my brother, I wasn't allowed any power. I hated that instead, I was destined to marry someone else with power, to give him heirs then disappear into a void of unimportance.Today, I'm the focal point. All eyes examine Kaan's new bride to be, their new Luna."What an incredible day this is, where we can finally announce that our son has proposed to his beautiful fiancee, Hunter," Cyrus announces to the crowd, sweeping his arm around to encompass us.Cyrus and Allira wanted to call me Livia to the crowd, although I pressed them not to. ~HunterYawning, I stretch back, letting the sun warm my skin."I don't know about you, Hunter, but I'm starving," Tay exclaims, popping the lid off a container that holds some strange looking paste. She insisted on having lunch together on the lawn, claiming she wants to spend more time together as 'sisters.' Unfortunately for me, she has insisted on making everything herself, and after living her whole life having everything cooked for her, it seems I am merely an experiment.I eye the food cautiously, although my stomach grumbles. "Me too. It's been a long day of training.""With Kaan?""No, he's been doing business with his father, apparently. Or in other words, avoiding me completely," I mutter, digging into a small bowl of grapes, popping one into my mouth.Kaan and I haven't spoken since he told me he is unfazed by the idea of me leaving before we can be married, expressing how uninterested in me he truly is.It's not as if I have suspected he would be interested in me, but it

His familiar smell floods my senses, bringing back memories I thought I left behind."Edgar...I missed you so much," I mumble into his chest. It takes everything in me not to choke of my growing emotions. I wasn't sure I would ever see Edgar again. I was convinced he would be suffocated up in the drama of me leaving, forced to move on and pretend I don't exist.Edgar pulls away, holding my shoulders. He shakes them a little, a grave look on his face."You idiot. How did you end up here?" He questions."It's a long story. How did you end up here?" I tug at his apron, at the cuttings hanging out the front pocket. He even wears gardening gloves, which is an amusing switch from the Edgar I once knew.He peels off the gloves at my scrutiny.
