I went back to the ground, and before taking my place next to Janice again, I glanced at Xavier, who was also looking straight at me. My heart beat faster, thinking he had always been eyeing me.

I quickly looked away; who knows what he might think. Better not risk it.

"What did he say?" my friend asked.

"It's all good. I told him I'm not sick, just that my mom is overprotective and worries too much about what might happen to me."

I knew she understood what I meant. I couldn't say it outright because others around us are wolves with sharp hearing and might listen in.

I had to be careful. Avoiding any mention of my family was my way of doing that.

"Remember, whoever gets the first two hits wins," Janice's dad reminded us.
