The alpha entered the building and I followed him timidly.
I had no idea where he was going. Again, thanks to his long strides, it was hard to follow him. Admittedly, the fault laid in my own short legs – I was rather small for a werewolf.
Nobody at the building dared to stop him. On the contrary, many greeted him with utmost politeness.
He suddenly stopped in his tracks and I bumped into his back.
His scent was heavenly, and his muscles spoke louder than any words could of the training he must go through every day. I was in a little bit of a daze when he turned around, a smirk playing on his lips.
“Are you okay, Jade?” He patted my head, like one would a child.
“I wasn’t paying attention. I’m sorry,” was my quick response.
“How about you walk by my side instead?” He offered in a soft tone of voice.
I gasped in shock and surprise. “I could never…”
“Why not?” His frown was almost imperceptible but it was there nonetheless.
“For starters, you’re you and I’m me,” I said timidly, wishing he’d drop the subject, feeling the many stares we were attracting.
“Nonsense,” he waved off my objection like it was nothing.
“Besides, I can’t keep up,” I blurted out, a blush creeping under my skin.
“You should have said so from the beginning,” he let out in soft admonishment. “Walk next to me.”
This time around, it wasn’t worded out as a suggestion but as an order – an order which I had no wish to disobey.
“Yes, al… Alex.”
He grabbed me by the shoulder and ushered me forward, leading me. Once again, I was under the spotlight – for different reasons this time around, mind you – and many women regarded me with something akin to loathing and jealousy.
I could only guess he didn’t allow many to walk by his side. It made me feel special, unique, and maybe a little bit too excited.
“You’re projecting your excitement a little bit too much. What pray tell is the cause for such joy?” He asked, just as we got into the elevator.
I shot him a sullen look. Couldn’t he have spared me? I was but a teenager. A teenager whose hormones were playing a dirty trick on her.
I pouted and looked ahead. My reflection in the mirror of the elevator confirmed my suspicions. I had a shit-eating grin, and the stars in my brown eyes gave me away for sure.
I remained silent, and he thankfully didn’t press the matter further.
A smartly dressed woman came forward the moment we stepped out of the elevator.
She was completely focused on the alpha, and she began to tell him about what needed to be done, what awaited him, the unforeseen changes in his schedule, all while he walked ahead towards an office.
Not only was Alexander Bad a powerful alpha but also a businessman from the looks of it.
And then, once she finished her speech, almost as if noticing me for the first time, she asked in a soft tone that held faint traces of curiosity, “A friend of yours, Mr. Bad?”
“Yes,” was his curt answer.
I would never even dream of calling the alpha my friend, no matter how considerate he was of me. But he couldn’t possibly tell a human I was a pack member.
“Should I bring you something to drink?” She offered in a kind tone.
I was about to decline, refusing to be a nuisance, when my stomach growled loudly. I blushed profusely at that.
“Do you love Chinese food, Jade?” He asked me suddenly.
“I don’t hate it,” I shrugged. “I am not a picky eater.”
“Well then, get me the usual, Camille,” he deadpanned. “The same for Jade.”
“Yes, sir,” she nodded, and then left just as he settled into the desk of the office he occupied.
I stood in the center of the office, not knowing what to do, admiring every little detail of my surroundings, from the artistic painting adorning the wall, to a family picture.
Everything screamed luxury, and I reasoned the couch alone cost more than our car did. I was reluctant to sit or touch anything.
“How about you get comfortable?” He suggested, his eyes twinkling with something akin to mischief.
“Alpha,” I began sheepishly as I sat cautiously on the sofa.
“Alexander,” he cut in, correcting me.
“Alex,” I smiled despite my state of unease. “I am no straight-A student but I don’t make a habit of skipping school.”
“It’s okay,” he waved my worries off. “If it’s the school you’re worried about, they saw you leave with me. If it’s your parents’ reaction you’re afraid of, I shall talk to them about it.”
I breathed out an okay at that and got more comfortable on the sofa.
I had no clue as to why he had taken me away from the school. I could handle myself against a dumb bully or two… but then again, that would later make me a target. And I had close to no wish to go through that kind of dull life again.
People might not bully a person openly but they might choose to distance themselves, and that alone was a form of bullying in my book.
I was easy-going by nature, and becoming the outcast had hurt me deeply.
I promised myself that this time around, it would be different. I shall not let my parents’ sacrifice be in vain. I’ll prove my worth to the pack and do my best to be at least respected, if not loved, by my peers.
Being different didn’t make me any less my parents’ daughter. They were elite warriors, and I had trained under them for years. I knew I could stand my ground against almost any opponent in human form. Nevertheless, this was a new pack, with different traditions, if the alpha’s attitude was anything to go by.
He worked diligently on the stack of papers that needed his attention, and I watched him with a small fond smile.
I just hoped my raging hormones wouldn’t embarrass me, and that my stupid crush on the man would be just that – a crush.
You don’t stand a chance, Jade, I told myself. Do not be foolish enough to fall for your alpha.
Jade was too adorable for her own good. She stared at me as I worked, and distracted me by doing so. The work I would have finished in under an hour took me two hours. Admittedly, when the food came, knowing that my mate was hungry, and that I’d get to see her eat in front of me, made me halt reading mid-phrase. I dismissed my PA with a tilt of my head. She knew not to argue. Then, I rose off the chair and went to sit next to Jade on the sofa, in order to eat – or so I kept telling myself. She looked at me with surprise in her eyes, but didn’t dare utter a word of objection. Truth be told, I would be her shadow if I could be. Sadly enough, I wasn’t some lower-ranked wolf. I was the alpha, and I had many responsibilities. I was also seven years her senior. Considering her lack of a wolf, I wasn’t entirely sure she’d accept me readily, and that was the only reason why I was keeping our fated bond a secret. But heavens have mercy, how it pained me to do so! As I ate, I pictured m
Alexander Bad, my new alpha, had a reputation of being a ladies’ man, and he was honoring said reputation. The blonde, who had sought him out, desperately wanting an explanation, had had her heart crushed.I had been told to stay, and thus, I had witnessed a scene that should have been more private. But it didn’t look like he cared. As for his other reputation, of being a ruthless alpha, who had 0 tolerance for nonsense, that was becoming more and more like a myth to me. Indeed, the alpha was far too sweet to me, and he even allowed me to call him by his first name – more like demanded it but that was not the point.Jessica, his hookup, looked positively gorgeous, and I wondered how a playboy could say no to a she-wolf such as her. She was everything I was not – tall, blonde, with an hourglass figure. I, on the other hand, was a short far-too-slender brunette who stood no chance and wouldn’t even hold a candle to her.Too engrossed as I was in my musings, I didn’t notice him moving un
Tyler and I met that afternoon. We exchanged numbers and agreed on tutoring sessions twice a week. Once that was done, Tyler and I headed out and began to spar playfully. Neither he nor I were serious about this spar in particular. We were just allowing some excess energy out. We were still at it when the smell of blood reached my nostrils. My eyes widened at once, and that moment of distraction earned me a blow. I fell to the ground unceremoniously. “Are you okay, Jade?” He asked as he extended a hand out for me. “I am but someone’s obviously not,” I told him, my eyes still wide as I rose to my feet in haste. “What?” He frowned slightly. “I smell blood,” I told him before bolting in the direction of the smell that had me so distracted. Since I was so slender and so petite, I could be a fast runner. Tyler followed after me without hesitating but I was a few steps ahead of him. I was the first to come across the clearing where Eli, the late gamma’s son, the same boy who had earl
We arrived at the pack house, with the alpha still holding me up bridal style, and that definitely attracted stares. I blushed while Alexander kept on walking nonchalantly, like the pure alpha man he was.I wished they’d stop staring… but then again, why wouldn’t they?I was but the new addition to the pack, and he was alpha Alexander Bad. He had a reputation to uphold. That of a ruthless heartthrob among many.I didn’t even qualify to apply for the role of a plaything… and yet, I was in his arms. It was hard to remain impassible while the man I had a crush on held me with utmost care. The beta, whose name was Luc, and whose demeanor was that of a goofball most of the time, waited for us at the threshold, with a pout on his face that made him look younger than he actually was.“Why the face?” The alpha asked him in a joking tone.“I wanted to take care of those leeches myself,” he said petulantly.“I am quicker and more efficient than you,” was the response he received. The exchange w
To say it was hell wouldn’t cover the half of what became of my life.Dad, mom, beta Luc, and even alpha Alexander were now taking turns to ensure I had eyes on me at all time. I stayed in the packhouse where I studied for my final year of high school. I secretly wished for a taste of normal life, and I got some of it, thanks to Tyler’s tutoring sessions.Tyler was shy despite being a warrior, but I somehow managed to get him out of his shell. We were in the spacious living room, seated at the large table, studying diligently, when Eli stopped next to the table.“There’s a bonfire tonight,” he announced in an excited tone, “Care to join us, Jade?”Yes, surprisingly, Eli and I had become friends over the course of the past two weeks.“Who’s us?” I asked with a raised eyebrow.“Us as in the entire school,” he deadpanned.“I’d love to but I’m not sure I can,” I let out on a sigh of dismay, while shooting a pointed look at Alexander’s office door.“Ask the alpha for a special permission o
“How did it go?” Eli asked me the moment I went back to where Tyler was seated.I had to fight back a blush as I said, “I’m going to the bonfire.”“Great,” he flashed me a dazzling smile which did nothing to my butterflies, contrarily to Alex’s scarce smiles.I chose not to say that I’d be going to the bonfire with the alpha. That would be awkward. Besides, it was complicated enough trying to figure out the man’s motives for what had transpired. Was I the new flavor of the month? Was I to be his new plaything? If I were to be honest with myself, I didn’t care, as long as I could call him mine for some time.It wasn’t long before I was back to my room. I showered and then chose to put on a black tank top with denim shorts. I kept my make-up simple with only lip gloss and eyeliner.I was about to head out to the alpha’s office when there was a knock on the door.He stood there, in all his regal beauty, looking every bit the dominant alpha he was.“I see you are not ready,” he commented
Jade kept challenging me and pushing all my buttons ever since I decided to have a word with her. I had just wanted to know why she was avoiding me but her answer made me see red. It took me several seconds, and a lot of willpower, to let her go back out there without marking her as mine for all to see.I wanted her to bear my mark, to bear my pups too, but it sure seemed like a far away dream at the moment. And then, when I went to get her from her room, I saw red a second time. Her shorts were the definition of outrageous. Her tanned legs on display didn’t help me keep a clear mind. Admittedly, her scent alone drove me crazy at times, especially since it was often laced with the smell of her arousal.I had to fight back every instinct that told me to just throw her on her bed and have my wicked way with her. Had I had better control, I would have given in, but as it was, I knew I might go too far and push her away from me.And then, she had the nerve to put that ridiculous red dress
After agreeing to the alpha’s demand – to not touch myself – I jumped to my feet, and groaned as I felt my juices flow now that I was standing up. The effect the alpha had on me should be illegal. The way his eyes darkened immediately made me realize it wasn’t one-sided at least. “See you tomorrow, Jade,” he said in a soft tone. “Bye,” I squeaked out, embarrassed now that I wasn’t on his lap. I was on my way to my room when I bumped into the alpha’s stalker – the leggy blonde. “You,” she spat out in a disdain filled tone. “Who do you think you are exactly to stick to the alpha’s side like that?” I had no response to offer but didn’t miss the occasion to roll my eyes at her. I was about to sidestep her when she blocked my path. “I asked you a question, you sorry excuse of a werewolf,” she snarled. “The alpha is in his office right now,” I deadpanned. “Feel free to ask him why he’d rather spend time with me.” And with that, I pushed her out of the way and carried on ascending t
Alex’s pov:Ever since Jade’s father passed away, we had not been intimate… and no, I meant more than just sex. Even the usual morning kiss became a little bit of a chore to her, it would seem.I was trying to give her time and space, not knowing what went through that beautiful head of hers… And that might have been quite the mistake!Indeed, in hindsight, I realized that giving her space and time allowed doubt to fester. And trust was fundamental in any relationship.I was thinking of taking her on a date, seeing as it had been quite some time since our last one. I was about to start making arrangements, and even call her, when there was a knock on the door of my office.I straightened up, sensing Camelia, and wondered if today was the day she would bear good news for me.As per usual, before long, her overly potent perfume permeated the air, and I had the urge to open a window, but I didn’t, knowing that she had caught a cold.“Hello, Xander,” she greeted me softly, her eyes twinkl
Jade’s pov:Soon enough, a couple of weeks went by since my dad’s passing, and Trevor had become my shadow. I believed that Alex, being Alex, only trusted his third-in-command to protect me. Alex’s meetings with Camelia were starting to bother me if I were to be honest. Not only was the witch an attention seeker, but also a cunning woman. She was trying desperately to get as much time with Alex as she could… and while I could understand their need to talk strategy, in an attempt to find a solution to the manipulated rogues issue, did it really have to be on a one-to-one basis? My jealousy was definitely having a field day, and I wasn’t happy about it. I had gone to the training grounds to let off some steam, too irked by the situation to do anything else, moreso because I couldn’t object to it – I didn’t have it in me to be a diplomat after all. And now that I was back to the pack house, I was just about to enter Alex’s office, when Luc caught my attention, near the door. The man
Jade’s pov:I could understand that my father’s funeral represented an occasion for our pack to know where some of the other packs stood. The beta of The Howling Wolf pack had already made their position quite clear, so I had no qualms sending him away… But that was not why I was preoccupied. I was troubled by the way mom had disappeared into a corner halfway through the funeral. I was anxious to know what Camelia’s endgame was. I was also worried about the future of the pack for many understandable reasons. And to further add to my list of worries, I didn’t know what the future had in store for me and Alex, and our baby.Through the next 3 days, Trevor remained with me whether Alex was beside me or not. And I found his loyalty absolutely endearing, though admittedly he might have been following orders.“Luna Jade,” Trevor began in a feeble tone of voice that was so unlike him, I feared his next words. “Your mother has collapsed and has been taken to the clinic.”I stilled, almost una
Jade’s pov:I was at the funeral, crying as to be expected… and even though I was supposed to be at ease among the pack, with people who loved me, I wasn’t.The same unusual smell from Alex’s office caught me unaware during the funeral, and I found myself trying to find the person whose very scent I had yet to memorize… and it turned out that it came from none other than Camelia. If there was one way to describe it, I would say there was some potent jasmin in the mix, though that wasn’t all there was to it.And though I tried to be reasonable and trust Alex, the fact remained that her perfume was too much for me at the moment, and it also grated on my nerves for some reason.Don't let this witch upset you, my wolf growled in my mind. We must think about our pup.Her reminder gave me back some of my lucidity. I had been planning to pounce on her, and strangle her till she admitted what she was here for, but my wolf's input brought me back to my senses. It was audacious of her to show u
Jade’s pov:I came to the feeling of a pleasurable butterfly caress on the back of my hand. It was kind of unusual, seeing as Alex usually caressed my back during my sleep, but I brushed it off.I came to, after the most terrible nightmare, and I realized I needed to make sure it wouldn't come to pass, ever.“What are you doing up, Alex? It's still early,” I grumbled sleepily, my voice hoarse as one who had slept a lot.“Jade,” mom’s voice reached me even as the hand covering mine tightened ever so slightly.“Mom?” I mumbled and then opened my eyes at long last.I found myself in a room so white it was grating on my nerves. I was in one of the clinic’s rooms, and yet I had no recollection of what might have brought me here. What was going on?“Mom?” I began tentatively, not quite sure how to formulate my thoughts.“Mrs Falls, please call for the nurse,” Alex, who was holding my hand tenderly, preciously, as if to never let go, let out in a weary tone.I looked into his vivid green eye
Alex’s pov: The way Jade stiffened in my lap for a moment, before she burst out in tears was worrying me. She appeared to be in shock – though it was understandable. “You don’t mean that, Luc. That can’t be. It has to be a mistake,” she was telling him frantically in between tears. She then shot out of my lap before I could hold her, and went to Luc, “This isn’t a good joke, Luc…” She shook him and he allowed her to do as she pleased. Her sorrow was almost suffocating me, and yet there was nothing I could do but simply be around for her – for as long as she would need me. “It’s not a joke, Jade,” he said in a hushed bleak tone of voice. “I am so sorry for your loss.” She was startled back and let his hand go as if the very small skin contact burnt her deeply. “But dad was such a strong warrior,” she objected. “How could it be? How did it happen?” “The patrollers were outnumbered, but had the attack covered efficiently for a moment. Then, one of the rogues went for Silas, and
Jade’s pov: There was nothing quite as disheartening as having an argument with one’s significant other. Though if I were to be honest, I wasn’t even sure how it escalated that quickly. The visiting alphas had left while I was on the training grounds, and for that I was glad… I felt like I could breathe more easily without being the main attraction. I could be myself around the pack, no matter if I trusted everyone or not. I knew that my dad was on patrol duty tonight but mom wasn’t. I mind-linked her at once, “Where are you, mom?” “Your father’s out on patrol duty but I am in our room,” she told me without delay, almost as if sensing my urgency. “I am coming,” I told her in a soft tone. The moment I caught sight of her, sitting on the bed, waiting for me, tears fell down my eyes. “Oh, Jade, sweetheart, what’s wrong?” She cooed as she rose to her feet, and hugged me at once. I shook my head negatively and merely nuzzled her, needing the comfort only she could give me. When I
Jade’s pov: The alphas and their convoy stayed for a couple of days, during which Alex barely had time to breathe. Naturally, Luc had a lot on his plate as well. And since Trevor wasn’t around, Eli and Tyler had been given the task to look after me. I truly felt like a precious doll made of the finest porcelain. And though I liked being cherished by Alex, I didn’t feel comfortable having so many people look after me… But it was what it was, especially considering I was a late bloomer – when it came to getting a wolf at least. “How stubborn can you be, J?” Eli clicked his tongue in disapproval as he caught sight of me in the training grounds, alone, when it was barely past sunset. Tyler’s comment was more understanding, “Even if you need time alone to think, you could have us around, not too far away?” “I didn’t want to trouble you,” I said on a sigh before hitting the dummy one last time. “Jade,” Eli began in earnest, and I looked in his direction at once, “I know that you might
Alex’s pov: It was close to 6 pm when Alpha Kade arrived. He came with his third-in-command and a couple of warriors. And he was the first one out of the two allies. Jade was slightly stiff, as she stood next to me, while we welcomed him onto our land. His hazel eyes weren’t guarded, as I would have expected them to be. On the contrary, he sported an easy smile and gave me a sideways hug. “Always been a hugger,” I let out teasingly. “It is good to see you, alpha Alexander,” he began in a nostalgic tone of voice, before focusing his gaze on my beautiful mate, “You must be his Luna.” “I am indeed,” she offered him a little bit of an awkward smile. “Welcome to the pack.” “Thank you,” he said, observing her for a moment longer than I appreciated, before telling me, “You’re in quite the situation, Xander.” “Let’s take this to my office,” I said at once with a small smile. His third-in-command followed us to the office whereas Jade, Eli and Tyler spoke to the warriors, who were han
