The harsh whispers and murmurs began. A few women, among whom my mom got along with, kept making fun of us.

“Look at her,” one of them said. “What a beautiful airhead! Imagine going naked on the alpha's terrace to seduce him."

Amari's mom's reaction hurt the most. "She's a complete nuisance. I've told my kid to avoid her so she doesn't contaminate her."

"That's not fair, Grace,” my mom snapped. “You’ve known Kira her entire life. She's not a troublemaker. She's already distressed, so keep your opinions to yourself."

I looked away, feeling horrible for putting my mom through this.

They criticized me while ignoring the fact that their children were worse. I'd never been caught stealing, lying, or messing around, but all of a sudden my head was on the block, and I was the worst person alive.
