Not even a spark glowed from the crystals. They stood as dull as the moment before Layla touched the largest one and even seemed duller. Murmurs and whispers rose up from the auditorium, and multiple lips sneered at her.

She dropped her hand and bowed her head, tears pricking in her eyes. She stepped away from the crystals, wanting to bolt to the door to run from it all. To where? She had nowhere to go. She knew no one.

“Silent!” Headmaster Brenton’s voice boomed through the auditorium, and a hush fell.

“You’re Layla Dele, the human girl?” he said as he walked to her and scrutinized her.

“Yes, sir.” She nodded.

What was he going to say? Mock her? Pity her? Was he going to kick her out?

“I sense great power inside you,” he mused, and she stiffened. He did? Was that what Alaric had talked about?

“But I also feel a block.” He pressed his thumb on her forehead and mumbled some strange words.

Layla gasped, sucking in air, as if she were pulled out of water, and a co

Human? No. Layla couldn’t call herself a human. No human could do what she did. A witch, then? There were witches in her world, but was she one? What she did couldn’t be called witchcraft, could it? No, that didn’t feel right. Then what was she if she wasn’t one of the creatures in the new world? “You’re sure you don’t know what you are?” Boris quipped a brow, and she shook her head again. The four exchanged strange looks and hushed words. “I’ll try to say it as simply as possible,” Demeter said, folding her hands on the table. “You’re one of the two Children of Iniquity, the Child of Darkness. A malevolent creature of evil that appears in our world once in a while.” ‘Me? A malevolent creature of evil? That’s not possible. There has to be a mistake somewhere.’ She wanted to argue. She wasn’t calling herself a saint, but evil wasn’t a word she would associate herself with. She tried to be at peace with all people, no matter how annoying they were. Sweetheart? Yes. Nice? Also yes.

That voice…Layla knew that voice and the safety it brought. Alaric! What was he doing here?“Professor D’Arcy? What are you doing here?” Demeter asked, and her voice was strangely pleasant, like she was greeting a friend.Layla peeked open her eyes, and her heart almost jumped out of her mouth. The sword was barely a hair’s breath away from her face. The flame danced, trying to lick at her hair. If Alaric had stepped in a minute too late, she would have been dead. She craned her neck away from the sword and turned in the direction she had heard the voice. Her stomach fluttered as she looked at the familiar, handsome man with his usual smile on his face. It was Alaric. He had saved her.“I’m here to make a proposal concerning The Child of Darkness.” Alarix said, not even sparing her a single glance as he walked to her side, and her heart lurched. So he knew what she was too. Had he really come to save her or make the situation worse? He had said she could trust him, but that was befo

Die there or train to be a war machine—that was if they were satisfied with Layla’s progress at the end of the school year. If they weren’t, she would die.It was like being asked to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea. Both options were bad in themselves and had death as the end sooner or later. If Layla said no, Blaze would chop off her head before she took the next breath. If she said yes, she would either die because she couldn’t control her power at the end of the school year, die in battle with the rebels, or die after because there was no way they would let her live when they had no use of her. No matter the route she chose, she had only one end. Only one came sooner than the other.“I… I accept your offer.” She breathed, and she felt an invisible cuff placed around her wrists. She didn’t want it; just saying yes felt like she had signed her life as a slave, but it was the only reasonable option she could choose.‘It’s better I’m alive and searching for a way to esca

“What the hell is this place?” Zayne scowled as the three of them stood in front of a cabin in the middle of nowhere that would be Layla’s dorm. The word dorm couldn’t even be used to qualify the place. Calling it dilapidated was even a compliment. The building looked like it would fall apart at the slightest touch; how it was standing was a miracle. The wooden walls looked like they housed thousands of generations of termites, and vines crept around them. The windows, parts of which were broken, looked like they hadn’t seen soap or water for years.“They can’t possibly expect her to stay here! In this filth! This is worse than a pigsty!” He hissed, glaring at Alaric.‘Oh, he cares? Surprising. I thought he wouldn’t mind if I slept in the gutters.’ Layla sighed, pushing open the doors and stepping in.‘As I expected, just as bad as the exterior,’ She held her breath and looked around. Dust and cobwebs clung to anything and everything they could find. The curtains, the table, the bed,

‘Finally, they are gone.’ Layla sighed, and her gaze went back to the luggage beside her bed. ‘What is inside this anyway?’ She scooted to it and opened it. Her uniforms, vests, and a pair of shoes were neatly folded inside, along with some books and a piece of paper with the word ‘schedule’ written at the top. Her bow looked different. It was gold, not black. It wasn’t just it; the entire uniform looked different from the one she first wore. It had gold hems and trimmings. Why? ‘It’s probably to isolate me from the rest of the students. A big radar to say, Hey, this is the child of evil or whatever; she’s the monster that’s going to destroy our world.’ She buried her face in her hands and let out a shaky breath. ‘I can’t believe this is happening. I can’t believe this is happening.’ She rocked herself back and forth, trying to even out her breathing. Once the new day started, so did her training. She would

“What?!” Layla stared at Zayne like he had grown an extra pair of eyes. That would have been far less strange than what he had said.He wanted to help her comb her hair? What in the great wild world was going on? Was she hallucinating? Did she accidentally slip while she was walking back to her bed and knock her head on the side?“Why?” She asked the question banging in her brain. Why? For what reason? Wasn’t her hair seen as cursed or something? Why would he even think of touching it?“Because you’re wasting my time. I don’t have eternity to wait for you.” He rolled his eyes and clicked his tongue.“Can you even comb a girl’s hair?” She moved to the other edge of the bed, farther away from him.“Would I have asked you if I couldn’t?” He rolled his eyes again, and in a second, he was right behind her.“W-what…? How?” Layla blinked, her gaze flickering from where he was to where he once stood. How did he move that fast?“Are you going to stay still, or are we going to keep on this cat

Layla kept her head bowed, walking behind Zayne as they made their way through the sea of students. People were staring at them in two completely contrasting ways. One with love, and the other with hate. They looked at him with total adoration. Flashing him bright smiles and pleasant greetings. It was like he was a god in the form of a man, and they were blessed to be in his presence. They parted ways for him, giving him enough space to walk through without anyone bumping into him.On the other hand, there was Layla who they glared at. Their bright gaze darkened when they moved from Zayne to her, and their lips twisted from dazzling smiles to disgusted sneers as they gossiped. It was worse than the orientation day, which didn’t surprise her. Then she was just a girl with cursed silver hair, but at that moment, she was a monster. It was quite funny since he, who was huge and had an intimidating aura, was loved, while she, who was as timid as a mouse, was hated. Ironic.‘It’s going to b

‘This isn’t what I asked for.’Pancakes. Layla had ordered pancakes. Though her voice was timid, she was very sure the waiter had heard her clearly. Then why was a plate of oats staring right at her from the plate? Not just any oats—the most pitiable one she had ever seen. It didn’t look appetising or edible. It was more water than the oats itself, with no milk, no berries, no nothing. Just cold, watery oats with a cup of water by the side.“I’m sorry, we ran out of pancakes, so I got you this instead,” the waiter said, wearing a smile that displayed her intention. As if to make her deceit more obvious, another waiter walked past them to a duo of faes, holding a tray with two plates of stacked pancakes, dripping with syrup and topped with berries. “Isn’t there anything apart from this?” Layla asked, trying not to sound like she was complaining.“Sorry, this is the only thing left in the kitchen. Enjoy your meal.” The waiter beamed and walked away before she could utter a word.‘Lies.

“I never thought you were such a prankster.” Zayne chuckled after a few silent seconds and pinched her nose. “You’re not mad?” Layla asked, turning her eyes back to him. “Why would I be mad? As long as I know you aren’t going to that damn place, I’m fine. And that was a really good one. You really got me.” He grinned, poking her cheek. “Whatever you do, make sure you don’t teach my sisters how to play pranks, or else you five will kill me.” “Really? Then I’m a certified prankster.” She giggled, pressing her hand to her lips. “It’s good to be back. I’ve missed you.” “Of course you did. I’m fun to be around, and I’m a very great company.” He boasted, puffing his chest. “Proud as always.” She scoffed, rolling her eyes and eyeing him from top to bottom. “You look good. I never thought I would see the day you would dress formal.” He was clad in a custom-made black suit that fitted his figure perfectly, and his hair was slicked back. It was like he walked out of the cover of a to

‘Maybe I shouldn’t have come here. What if someone recognises me?’ Layla worried as she walked into the beautiful ballroom, and her gaze flitted around, taking note of the guests. The place was littered with mostly werewolves and a good amount of phoenixes, vampires, and faes royals that had decided to grace the pre-coronation party. Some couples danced to the beautiful melodies of the instrumentals while others stood by the side, having light-hearted conversation. The air was light and merry, but it still couldn’t beat the uneasy wiggling in her stomach. ‘If someone recognises me, they would definitely make a scene. It’s not everyone that supports the overthrow of the former parliamentarians, and I’m sure some are here. Imagine the confusion it will cause if one of them decides to confront me. I want to see Zayne, but I don’t want to in that kind of dramatic way. It would be better if I just left now. I can see him—’ Two vampire gentlemen walked past her, and she stiffened. The

‘This is it. Alaric is right at the other side of that door.’ Layla thought, standing in front of the large door she had appeared before that led to Alaric’s officee. She reached out to the knob, but her hand trembled, refusing to touch it.‘Ugh, why am I so nervous? It’s Alaric I’m going to see, not a monster? How hard is it to tell him I love him?’ She bit her bottom lip, pushing the thin hand of her nightdress back on her shoulders. A picture of her confessing her love to Alaric flashed through her mind, sending blood to her cheeks. She pressed her hands to her face, squeezing her eyes shut.‘I can do this. I can do this. I love you is just three simple words. Three simple words that change everything,’ she prepped herself as she placed her hand on the knob and she opened the door. She poked her head into the room, and her lips curled into a soft smile as her gaze fell on the figure slouched in his chair.‘Aww, he’s sleeping. It seems like Pyro and Eleanor were just over worried,’

"Ahh, no wonder we went with the heater. I thought they underestimated how cold it was." Layla shivered, wrapping her arms around herself the moment she stepped out of the portal. The world was a barren iceland covered with thick layers of snow. Large mountains were scattered all over, so high that they seemed to reach the grey sky and trees that were covered in snow towered above her covered the entire landscape. Apart from those, there was nothing but eerie silence, shadows, and anguish. Anguish, fear, pain, and rage hung heavy in the air like mist, and her heart clenched. And it was cold. Very, very cold. When she had gone with the elite class, there was always a special heating device with them, stopping them from turning to popsicles. But she had no special device, and her bodysuit might have been good for battle, but it did nothing to warm her up. "Here," Selene pressed a finger against her forehead, and warmth flooded through her. "Thank you," she sighed, dropping her a

“What? You’re leaving?!” Zayne gasped, gaping at Layla like she was sprouting leaves on her head instead of hair. “Why are you leaving? Where are you going to? To the human world? You can’t be thinking of going there? What about the life you have here? Are you going to give up all that?” Alaric fired questions, furrowing his brows. “What?! No! Why will I go to the human world? I have nothing there,” Layla replied, crinkling her face. “Then where are you going? Like on a vacation on something?” Zayne asked. “Not that either. I… I need to finish my mission.” She turned around, nudging to Selene, and the goddess waved at them. “I need to go to Tophet. I need to save the creatures there.” “Are you crazy? You can’t go to Tophet alone! It’s too dangerous!” Zayne exclaimed, shaking his head. “It’s something I have to do. Those creatures have been in that state for too long. I can’t allow them to continue living in anguish when I can help them. And don’t worry about me. I can take

I was scared when Draven brought out the eye of chaos and everyone fainted. I was afraid you guys weren’t going to wake up. I could feel our bond, and it was so weak. I was terrified.” She sniffled, snuggling into them as they held her closer.“I don’t know about him, but something that weak isn’t enough to kill me.” Zayne grinned, patting her head as she let go of them.“Weren’t you the first one to hit the ground? You were out like a candle in the wind before the light actually hit your skin and you were the last to stand up when it was over.” Alaric scoffed and rolled his eyes.“W-what? “That doesn’t mean anything. Make sure you make it count. It will be a disgrace if you don’t land a single blow on me before you die.”Blaze fired multiple balls of fire at her while Demeter sent blades of sharp petals. Layla lifted her hand, creating a barrier, and all their attacks disappeared the moment they touched it.She lifted her hand, forging a large shard of ice and launching it at Blaze in the blink of an eye. He screamed as it pierced through his heart, coming out at the other side. She rushed at him before he could melt the ice, and she cut off his head.“Two down, one more to go. ‘Did… did it work?’ Layla thought, wincing as she sat up. She opened her eyes, and her lips curled to a large smile. The red light was going dimmer and dimmer, and the red clouds began to dispense, making way for the evening sky. The dorm around the arena flickered off and on for a few seconds and faded away.“It worked! It actually worked!” She cheered as she stood up and Eleanor flew to her side. “Layla! Can you see that? We did it! We did it!” She squealed, throwing her arms around her and pulling her into a tight hug.“How is everyone? Are they— what’s that?” Layla scrunched her brows as small balls of white and yellow light flew from the sky to them.“What’s what?” Eleanor asked, letting go of her and turning around. The balls of light swirled and danced around, and Layla reached out her finger to touch one of them. A recognition burned in her soul, and she wore a gentle smile.“They’re our sisters. They’re finally free, and they’re thanking us,” she whispered.“You’re welcome.

It can’t be. You’re lying. There has to be another way.”‘She has to be lying. The eye of chaos has to have another way to be turned off without Draven.’“There’s no other way! Everyone here is going to die. Then it will keep spreading out, draining every supernatural in its way until it has taken every bit of power in the supernatural world. Everyone will die.” She cackled, throwing her head back, and her entire body shook. “Every single one of them will pay with their lives for turning the
