Ryan’s Pov

The air was thick with tension in the grand hall of the Shadowfang mansion. Karen, the woman ceremonially marked as my Luna, stood before me, her voice trembling but persistent. She begged for my attention, her pleas like whispers against a storm.

“Why do you do this to me, Ryan?” she asked, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I’ve given everything to you. I’ve waited, sacrificed, and stood by your side. Just tell me what to do to make you love me!”

I stood motionless, my hands tucked in my pockets. “Karen, you’ve always been one of my closest friends. I care for you, but not as my Luna, not in the way you want me to. The only reason you hold that title is for the alliance. My true mate…” I hesitated. “She’s gone. She’s either lost or dead. You’ll never be her.”

Her face crumpled at my words, but I didn’t flinch. “Ryan,” she whispered, stepping closer. “Why do you cherish your human life more than what we have here? You spend more time in their world than ours. You treat your work as a human CEO with more care than you’ve ever given me.”

I turned my back to her, staring out the massive window overlooking the pack’s territory. The moon hung low, casting its silver glow across the forest. “Because it’s easier,” I said, my voice low but steady. “In the human world, I don’t have to pretend. I don’t have to deal with these expectations or force something that doesn’t exist. I am who I am, I do my duties as the Alpha, so why can't I have spare time for myself?”

“But this is your world!” Karen’s voice cracked. “You’re the Alpha, Ryan. You’re supposed to lead us, to cherish me as your Luna. Everyone looks up to you, fears you, respects you. But all I want is for you to love me.”

Her words didn’t move me. They couldn’t. “We both know that my leadership is beyond anything anyone has ever seen. You deserve someone who can give you what you want,” I said finally. “But that’s not me. Even if we marry, Karen, there will never be love between us.”

I couldn't believe I said that to her but I had to tell her the truth. She can't get any affection from me and there's no need for pretence.

The door creaked open, and my uncle, Elliot, stepped inside. His presence alone commanded respect, his years of wisdom and service to the pack evident in his every move. “Ryan,” he said, his tone heavy with authority. “A word.”

I nodded, leaving Karen standing there, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

In the study, Elliot leaned against the mahogany desk, his sharp eyes piercing mine. “You can’t keep dismissing her like this,” he began. “Karen may not be your true mate, but she’s still your Luna. You have a duty to her and this pack.”

“I’ve fulfilled my duty,” I replied coldly. “She holds the title. The alliance stands. What more do you want from me?”

“She’s breaking, Ryan. The pack sees it. And this obsession with the human world is not helping your image here. You’re the Alpha. Your focus should be on us, not playing CEO among mortals.”

“They know about my human life, and yet no one dares challenge it,” I said, my voice like steel. “Because they know I’m the only one who can lead this pack, and I'm not obsessed with the human world, I only go there to be by myself for some time.”

Elliot sighed, rubbing his temples. “You’re so much like your father. Stubborn, unyielding. But even he knew when to bend.”

“Watch your tone Uncle, my father is gone,” I said sharply. “And I lead as I see fit.”

Elliot’s gaze softened. “Your father would have wanted you to find peace, Ryan. And if not with Karen, then somewhere. This path you’re on….it’s lonely.”

“Ryan,” his tone calm but firm, “I’m speaking to you not just as your uncle, but as someone who has watched you grow into this role. You must treat Karen better. She’s to be your Luna.”

My voice remained calm, cold even. “Unity doesn’t require love. Karen has my respect as a warrior and a friend, but I will not pretend to feel something I don’t. My mate is gone. She’s either dead or lost forever. I won’t give Karen what isn’t mine to give.”

“Ryan…” his uncle’s voice softened more, “this pack needs stability. You can’t spend so much time in the human world, pretending to be one of them. It’s unnatural.”

I stood, my towering presence silencing further protest. “My human life is my own. I’ve built it for reasons you don’t need to understand. If my leadership is in question, say it now.”

Uncle Elliot sighed and shook his head. “No one questions your leadership, Ryan. But your path isolates you. Just think about what I’ve said.”

I said nothing, the weight of his words pressing down on me. Finally, I stood. “I need to clear my head.”

“Don’t run from this, Ryan, we aren't done here” Elliot called after me. But I was already out the door.

“What did the old man want?” Caleb, my best friend and beta asked, his tone light but curious.

“The usual,” I replied. “Karen, the pack, my supposed duty to play house with someone I don’t love.”

Caleb smirked. “You’ve always been stubborn. That’s why they’re so scared of you.”

My lips twitched into something resembling a smile. “They’re not wrong to be.”

****

By the time we reached the human world, the tension in my chest had eased. The sleek black SUV cut through the bustling city streets, heading toward his penthouse. The city lights reflected off the car’s polished surface, and I found myself staring out the window, my mind elsewhere.

“You’re quiet,” Caleb noted. “That bad, huh?”

“It’s nothing I can’t handle,” I said.

Caleb chuckled. “Of course not. You’re Ryan. But even Alphas need to blow off steam.”

I didn’t respond. I was about to when a sudden, inexplicable sensation hit me. It was a pull, a bond so powerful it made my breath hitch. I stiffened, my eyes scanning the streets.

Caleb noticed immediately. “What is it?”

My voice was low, almost a growl. “Do you feel that?”

Caleb frowned. “Feel what? Ryan, what’s going on?”

“Stop the car,” I ordered the driver.

The SUV slowed to a halt at the curb. I was out of the car before it fully stopped, my long strides taking me onto the sidewalk. Caleb hurried after me.

“Ryan, talk to me! What’s going on?” Caleb demanded.

I didn’t answer. His senses were on high alert, my heart pounding in a way it hadn’t in years. I followed the pull, weaving through the crowd, my eyes scanning every face. Caleb stayed close, his concern evident.

I walked through the crowd in search of what caught my senses…my steps quickened until I came to a stop, and there she was

My stomach rumbled softly, reminding me I'd only had a stale piece of bread the night before. I took a deep breath, brushing my hair back into a loose ponytail and reaching for the uniform I'd hung on the chair. I've been glad that we wear uniforms at the bar. I wouldn't have known how to get to work without looking tattered and miserable. It was another day and another shift at the bar. At Least it paid for food, which was the most important of all and a roof over my head. I quickly took my bath as I planned to get to work early to finish some tasks and avoid chaos later in the day. I dressed up, and after that I took some leftover food I had from two days ago.As I stepped out, the streets were quieter than usual. My guess was because it was early, I spotted my landlady, casually sitting by a coffee shop, I waved at her and gav

Ryan’s Pov After I commanded Aurora's boss and his men to leave, my wolf eyes flared momentarily. The group of men who had dared to harm Aurora scurried away in terror, their drunken bravado dissolving into frantic footsteps. I turned my gaze back to Aurora. Her trembling frame collapsed as I reached for her, and she fainted into my arms. I caught her effortlessly, my strong arms wrapping protectively around her small figure. With gentleness, I scooped her up, cradling her as though she might break. Caleb, my beta and closest friend, followed swiftly, concern etched into his features. “What the hell was that?” Caleb hissed, his voice low and urgent. “You showed your wolf side! Do you realize how reckless that was? You risk exposing us all!” My expression didn’t waver as I carried Aurora towards my car. “They’ll be too drunk or terrified to tell a coherent story. No one will believe them anyway,” I replied coolly, brushing past Caleb. Caleb’s mouth opened, ready to argue, but he

Aurora's Pov The room was dimly lit when I flickered my eyes open. The world felt hazy, my head pounding as though a drum was being beaten inside. I blinked, trying to make sense of my surroundings. Where was I? How did I get here? The last thing I remembered was the sound of my boss’s voice, the sting of fists against my body, and then darkness. Everything else was a blur. The bed beneath me was soft, too soft, unlike the one in my cramped apartment. The sheets smelled clean, faintly of cedar and something earthy. My body felt different too. The ache was there but muted. I lifted my hands to find bandages wrapped around them. My clothes... I wasn’t wearing the same ones from before. Instead, I had on a plain oversized shirt. A shiver ran down my spine. I swung my legs off the bed cautiously, feeling the coolness of the wooden floor against my bare feet. My head throbbed as I stood, a wave of nausea threatening to topple me over. But I steadied myself. I needed answers. Where was

Ryan Pov “Let me drop you off,” I said, my tone firm but leaving no room for argument. After a brief hesitation, she nodded and said okay, her wariness evident. We quietly walked to my car, Aurora was walking slowly because of her wounds. I opened the door for her and she said thank you, it was almost like a whisper. Now, even in the dim glow of the streetlights, her tension was palpable. I noticed how she flinched every time I shifted in my seat, as if she expected me to lash out. It grated on my nerves more than I cared to admit. I stole another glance at her. She was so fragile-looking, her frame almost too small for the oversized sweater Caleb had purchased in haste. And yet, there was a stubbornness in the way she held herself, a refusal to crumble despite her obvious weakness. I respected it, even if it annoyed me that she was too stubborn to accept the help she clearly needed. Why is she so scared? I mused, my brows furrowing. I don’t look that intimidating. Do I? my wolf

Aurora’s Pov The moment I stepped into my apartment, a wave of dizziness hit me. My knees nearly gave out as I leaned against the door, locking it behind me. Safe. For now. The dim bulb overhead flickered like it always did, and the stale air greeted me, heavy with the smell of mold and neglect. My body ached all over, every bruise and cut a reminder of the nightmare I’d barely escaped. I shrugged off the oversized sweater that Ryan had wrapped around me, wincing as the fabric grazed my sore arms. I didn't want to stain the expensive clothes, so I wore mine instead. I needed to eat. Something simple, something to settle the nausea swirling in my stomach. The kitchen was nothing more than a counter, a rusty sink, and a tiny stove that worked when it felt like it. I rummaged through the cabinet, finding a pack of instant noodles. The water took ages to boil, and as I stirred the noodles in, my mind drifted back to Ryan. The way he appeared out of nowhere, stepping in like some dar

Ryan’s POV As I got back to Shadowhaven with Karen, I immediately had a brief meeting with my elders about the Rouges. They were getting out of hand by attacking the innocents and reaping them of their belongings. After some hours of analysing what should be done, everyone departed to their various homes and I was left alone. I leaned back in my chair, staring at the stack of papers on my desk. The elders had been relentless tonight, arguing over boundaries and patrol schedules like children fighting over a toy. I’d settled it, of course…that’s what I do, but the weight of their expectations was starting to grate on me. I rubbed the back of my neck and sighed. Finally, I could retreat to my room and forget about the pack’s endless demands, at least for a little while. The castle was quiet, the kind of silence that let my mind wander to places I didn’t want it to go. Aurora. Her name slipped into my thoughts unbidden, as it often did these days. That girl was like a storm, one th

Aurora's POV It was a new day, and I had finally decided to confront Ryan about the job offer. I was scared to go to him but I had to. My body still ached, every bruise a reminder of the life I was trying to leave behind. I moved slowly, careful not to aggravate the wounds that hadn’t yet healed. The thought of facing Ryan again made my chest tighten, but I didn’t have a choice. This job might be the only chance I had to survive. I folded the expensive clothes he had bought me and packed them into a bag. There was no way I could keep them. They were too much…too luxurious for someone like me. Returning them clean was the least I could do. As I stepped out of my rundown apartment, I bidded madam rose my landlady goodbye. As I walked down the street, I saw Inez walking briskly down the street, heading toward the bar. I called out to her, hoping for even a small exchange of words after what happened, but she barely acknowledged me. Her eyes flicked over me like I was a stranger. “Ine

Ryan’s POV Aurora. Her name clung to my mind like a stubborn echo I couldn’t shake off. It had been hours since she’d left, but her scent still lingered faintly in the air…a mix of lavender and something uniquely hers. A part of me wanted to call her back, ask her why she looked so vulnerable yet determined all at once. It was infuriating how one woman, no, one human, had managed to weave herself into my thoughts this much. Her name brought a strange calm to the chaos swirling in my thoughts. Yet, it also set me on edge. She had this….presence, one that tugged at something primal in me. You’re thinking about her again, Draven, my wolf, growled in my mind, his voice low and accusing. “Quiet,” I muttered, pinching the bridge of my nose. You can’t keep ignoring this, Ryan, he insisted. We should be with her. Protect her. Keep her close. “She’s human,” I snapped, though my words felt weak even to me. So? Draven shot back. You feel it too. She’s ours. I didn’t respond. I couldn’t.

Trapped.I tried to move, but the cold bite of iron dug into my wrists and ankles. The chains rattled, heavy and unbreakable. My breathing was uneven as I struggled against them, but it was no use. A normal town. People walked around like any other place, living their lives.Ziani led the way, her steps confident. Aurora’s grip on my hand tightened, and I felt her fear even though she tried to hide it. I leaned in and whispered, “Aurora.”She didn’t look at me. “Ryan, please don’t make me change my mind. Let’s just follow her.”Ziani’s voice broke through the moment. “The seven witches who will perform the spell are already waiting. Everyone here knows that Aurora is the leader, so if someone bows to you, do not make it awkward.”Aurora nodded, her face unreadable. As we walked further in, I studied the people around us. They didn’t have black eyes or strange appearances. They looked like normal humans. If I didn’t know better, I wouldn’t have thought they were witches.Aurora suddenly stiffened

His voice was thick with sleep.I was already scrambling for my clothes, pulling on whatever I could find. "It is time, Ryan!
