Selena POV:
The rest of the day felt like a blur. After finding out about this mating business, I had turned off the world again. Meredith seemed to understand that I needed a little more time to digest all the information so the conversation focused on the coming barbecue the day after. Meredith would be taking me to it, and it was going to take place in the large opening in the center of pack land where the flames couldn’t reach the trees.
In two short days, everything I knew about myself had been turned on its head. I didn’t know what to think or how much I could ask since Meredith was being open. Neo seemed to be a bit more closed off, but it only served to remind me that Meredith was just as much a stranger as the next person.
There was another thing. I had just met them but I felt like I knew them for much longer. They had befriended me quicker than anyone I had known and shown me kindness that even my father hadn’t been fully capable o
Selena POV:I fell into another dreamless sleep that night and woke up in the morning with the light streaming through my window. The day seemed to be sunnier. Looking out of the window, I saw the rays of the sun pouring over the yard. I was dressed and made my way downstairs to find Meredith in the kitchen preparing for the barbecue. I assisted with chopping the vegetables until it was time to leave for the event. “I am to only bring vegetables because the wolves will take care of the meat. You mostly ate vegetables here, how much do you like meat?” Meredith asked. I looked down and shrugged. I didn’t know if I liked eating it or not. I hadn’t really tasted much, to begin with.“It is good for your body, so have loads of it there, okay?”I gulped. I truly felt like I was imposing and that I was getting free treatment, so I voiced my concern. Meredith guffawed. “You are just starting out
Selena POV:“Ruth,” the Alpha warned. She slowly moved away, but still stayed put at his side. He took an instinctive step away from her, his eyes never leaving mine. I lowered my head. His expression was like he was looking at something that bothered him. The corner of his lips was turned down in a slight frown. “I am happy to see you healthy,” he commented before going silent. “Meredith is teaching this one some of her voodoo, I hear,” Ruth started. “God, that demonstration was freaky but you turned out to be a dirt witch,” she snickered, seemingly bored. She didn’t bother to look in my direction again. For that I was glad. If that was all she understood, I had no need to correct her. “Yes,” I replied politely. I didn’t have to stoop to her level. “A dime a dozen from what I know,” she said, rolling her eyes.“Ruth!” Neo admonished be
Selena POV:“Shit!” I yelled. I jumped in fright from finding Duncan standing only a few feet behind me. I put my hand over my frantic heart, hoping to calm its heavy beats and slow my breathing down to a normal rate. His stoic expression turned into mild displeasure. He crossed his arms over his chest in what felt like a show of it from my response to his sudden appearance. I was embarrassed by my squeal and felt like I had made a show in front of him once again. My cheeks were aflame and I had to look away from his gaze.“Apologies for sneaking up on you,” he said in such a low voice that I had to wonder if someone had forced him to come over and speak to me. But he was the Alpha, there was nothing that could force him to do anything. Or that was what I assumed. My eyes flitted away, not knowing how to respond before looking back at him. He waited patiently for me to look at him before he started to speak again.&
Selena POV:Meredith woke up an hour after. She slipped into her chair, slouching and resting her head on the table, still sleepy. “Are you still sleepy?” I asked as I took a sip of the tea I had made. She sucked in a deep breath and nodded. “It was too draining for me yesterday. I am rarely around so many people, so it is hard for me to have so much noise around me.” Again, she sighed. I had to say that I felt the same. Finally, she stretched and got up from the chair, the wooden legs screeching at her movement. She poured herself a mug of tea and then sat down. When she was awake, she spoke, “So, ready for a lesson?”“Sure,” I said confidently. We got up from the table and made our way to the greenhouse. As we reached the middle of the room and near the circle, Meredith stopped and turned to face me. She had my complete attention and our fatigue was completely forgotten. I want
Selena POV:When I woke up the next morning, I stretched before going down. It had been a few days of training with Meredith and I was doing pretty well in the magic area. Meredith’s compound flourished with fruits and flowers and nausea I had felt before slowly melted into something poignant. Something that ran through me without hurting me in the least. I was slowly learning the various herbs and plants that witches used to enhance their magic, not having used any of them yet. To familiarize myself with them, I tended to each and every one, getting to know them after introducing me. It had been fun. This morning, I was again alone. Meredith was sleeping in and had told me we wouldn’t be training. I didn’t think much of it and started to prepare breakfast. I had taken to cooking for both of us, feeling like a burden on her. I started with making a dressed fruit salad, some fried eggs, and a tall glass of juice. Both of us enjoyed light meals
Selena POV:I looked at the clothes and then slowly put myself in the first one of the lot. I had only been allowed three at a time, so the rest was still in Duncan’s hand. In the background, I heard a female scurry out of their cubicle and speak to the person standing on the other side. “Honey, do you think I look fat in these jeans?” the girl asked. There was silence on the other side before the guy coughed. “You look fabulous,” he said with practiced precision. Though I didn’t understand the situation, the general tension in the air told me it was something bad in the human world. I shrugged and pried the door open. Duncan’s head propped up and he looked right at me. I opened the door a little more and showed him what it looked like. He frowned as he moved forward, tugging at the sleeve of the shirt. “It’s okay. Can you stitch?” he asked. I looked at him dumbfounded.
Selena POV:I walked through the front door in a bit of a daze after Duncan dropped me off. Before I could walk upstairs, I heard my name being called from the back of the house. I made my way slowly to the kitchen where I knew I would find Meredith. Meredith was at the small table, sorting through kitchen supplies. She looked up at me with a tired smile. “How was your day?” she asked. I noticed that she looked like she hadn’t slept in days. Her eyes were bloodshot with dark circles underneath and she also showed signs of crying. “It was interesting,” I told her, trying to keep the emotions out of my voice. I wanted to know what had happened to her while I was gone but she didn’t look like she wanted to talk about it. “Oh? Did you learn anything new about werewolves or humans?” she asked, getting back to her unpacking.“Yes. I learned about human behavior and stuff like that. I realiz
Selena POV:I woke up the next morning, feeling a moment of panic. I must have been really tired as the memory of falling asleep was lost to me. I tried to sit up but the covers were firmly tucked around my body snuggly. I doubted that I had moved all night. It was only then I realized how anxious I had been to go out. It had sucked all my energy out. Looking over at the clock, I saw that I had five minutes before the alarm was supposed to go off and decided not to wait. Untangling myself from the covers, I looked down and saw that I had sweated through my clothes. I gradually went through the motions before going downstairs, feeling as though there was a weight attached to each of my limbs. Ed was concerned when he came to pick me up for training. “I feel so tired today,” I said softly, trying not to sound like I was whining. Looking at the expression on his face, I had to assure him. “I’m okay… Still feeling a l
