"You shouldn't be here, rogue."

My spine tingled as the voice spoke, every word brimming with hate. My wolf scratched under my skin, restlessly stirring. I jumped off the bed, looking for the source in the shadows.

"Who is there?" Although I spoke steadily, my heartbeat was deceiving me; it pounded in the quiet like a drumbeat.

A massive figure emerged from the shadows as they changed. In the dim moonlight, his wolf-like smile shone brightly. His scent was one of Power and something sinister; therefore, he wasn't just any old guy. Midnight Pack, although not a follower of Darius.

He circled me like prey and remarked, "You've made quite the impression." "I'm afraid you won't be around for long."

"Give me a try." Now, my voice was sharper, with every syllable laced with defiance.

His chuckle was a deep, menacing rumble. "I'll give you that you have fire." He made a lunge.

Instinctively, I ducked, but he was too quick. He tugged me toward him, his hand closing like iron around my arm.

"Leave me alone!" I struggled against him, hissing.

"Not until I teach you how to be polite."

It was not my snarl that tore through the room.

Darius flooded the room as the door flew open and slammed against the wall. His anger was evident, and his presence was oppressive.

"Get away from her." He had the kind of voice that promised violence deadly calm.

The intruder hesitated briefly. His grip tightened, and he murmured, "She's just a rogue. Why did you care?"

Darius moved more quickly than I had expected. He was across the room one second, and then he was smashing the man into the wall with his hand around his throat.

"I own her." His canines flashed, and his words were a snarl.

I felt a sudden, unwanted burst of heat mine. Anger and something else something dangerous came rushing through me as the word replayed in my head.

"Are you aware of what happens when someone tampers with something that belongs to me?" Darius's voice was low and deadly as he commanded.

The man choked out a jumbled apology as he battled.

He collapsed to the ground, unable to breathe, as Darius let go of him.

“Get out," Darius commanded.

The door was left open as the man stumbled and ran away.

The tension crackled like a live wire, making the place too silent.

"Are you in pain?" Darius's eyes were still blazing with unresolved rage, but his voice softened.

I said, removing my arm from his persistent contact, "I'm fine. I didn't need your help."

"Obviously." Despite his clipped tone, he continued looking at me for wounds.

I crossed my arms and tried not to notice the thrill in my skin from his closeness. "That wasn't necessary for you to do."

He took a step toward me, his warmth pouring between us. "You don't know me well if you believe that I'll watch helplessly as someone touches you."

"I don't know you at all," I shot back, looking him in the eye.

The sneer on his face was devoid of amusement. "That will soon change."

The tension between us was oppressive the following morning. Darius was waiting for me outside the room, resting against the wall as if he hadn't claimed me the previous evening.

With a playful tone, he said, "You're late again."

I glared at him. "Do you like this? Like an overbearing babysitter hovering over me?”

His laughter was gruff and low. "Take it as a precaution."

"From what?" I brushed past him and asked. "Your wolves?"

"Among other things."

I stopped and looked at him. "Darius, why are you concerned? Remember, I'm just a rogue”

The teasing edge vanished from his face, and it darkened. "Maya, you're more than that, regardless of your feelings.”

I was shocked by what he said but didn't have time to think about it. Another round of humiliation was waiting in the training yard.

The training that day was hard and meant to break me. And it could have if Darius hadn't been staring at me the whole time.

I could feel his heavy, unyielding stare whenever I faltered. It was frustrating and somehow comforting.

One of the sparring partners leaped at me and hissed, "Keep your guard up, rogue."

I slammed my elbow into his ribs to sidestep his strike. I said, "You'll regret calling me rogue one more time."

I didn't care that the people gathered around us burst out laughing and cheering. Being the underdog was over for me.

Darius's voice broke the sound. "Enough."

The mob dispersed, complaining but obeying orders.

His tone was almost approving as he continued, "You're getting better."

“Did you take that as a compliment?” I raised an eyebrow in question.

He answered, a faint smile pulling at his lips, "Don't get used to it."

The apprehension from the night before again later that night.

The sensation that someone or something was observing me persisted.

My heart raced when I heard footsteps outside my door.

Breathing shallowly, I waited while grabbing the closest weapon I could find a broken chair leg.

With a creak, the door opened, and I swung mindlessly.

“Easy, Maya."

Darius's reflexes were painfully quick, and he caught the homemade weapon mid-strike.

"Why in the world are you here?" I lowered the chair leg and demanded.

He said, "Checking on you," with a calm tone and piercing gaze. "You appeared... uneasy."

I hurriedly answered, "I'm fine," but my face displayed the truth.

His presence filled the tiny space as he took a step closer. "You're an awful liar."

For an instant, I lost my ability to breathe due to the crackling tension between us.

"What makes you concerned?" My question was hardly audible above a whisper.

His fingers touched my cheek, and I felt a shock of the contact. "Because you make not doing so impossible."

I froze, torn between the unexplainable want to stay and the urge to draw away.

For a split second, I thought he might kiss me as his eyes fell to my lips.

Instead, he took a step back, his face unreadable.

His voice was hoarse as he urged, "Get some rest." "You'll need it."

He was gone in an instant, leaving me to deal with a flurry of emotions that I was unsure how to manage.

"She is troubled.”When I saw her standing in the center of the training yard, her eyes burning like fire, my first thought was that trouble had never appeared so alluring. I was now wondering what the hell I was doing as I stood at her door for the second consecutive night. My Alpha side, who insisted on control and reason, knew better. She had a certain quality, though. Her scent was overwhelming, akin to wildflowers following a rain. My wolf became agitated and began to pace inside of me like a beast in a cage. I waited while gently knocking. I opened the door after hearing no response. "Maya?" The bed was unaltered, the room deserted. My heart pounded the strange feeling at once grating and frightful. Following her scent took little time. I found her squatting low, with her back to me, close to the pack's boundary. The moonlight silvered her, and her hair fell over her shoulders, constricting my chest. "What the hell are you doing out here?" I didn't want to sound

Lysander was before me, a ghost from a past life I had long forgotten. The last time I saw his smug smile, he had betrayed everything our pack stood for, and it wasn't enjoyable. "What's wrong, Alpha?" Lysander drew back, advancing a step. "I think you've seen a ghost." With my wolf growling just below the surface, I bared my teeth. "Why have you come here?" "Me?" He cocked his head in jest. “Darius, this is the moment I've been waiting for. I'm waiting to remind you that you have blood on your hands.”Next to me, Maya tensed up. It wasn't time to explain, but I could feel her eyes on me, asking questions. I stepped ahead of her and hissed, "You're trespassing. And you understand the meaning of that." "Oh, I do." Lysander grinned, but it stopped short of his eyes. “But, tonight, this isn't about pack rule or territory. It's about you. About finishing what, we started. The memories clambered to the surface, uninvited and unrelenting. There had been a time when Lysander an

"Darius, you're playing a risky game." Like smoke, Lysander's final words stuck to the atmosphere, wriggling, twisting around my mind, and refusing to go away. His charges and covert threats echoed in my head as I stood motionless. As I battled the storm inside me, the room felt oppressive, with the walls closing in. I knew things could go apart due to the past Lysander alluded to. At my sides, my hands clenched into fists. Weakness wasn't an option, but my armor was starting to reveal its fractures, especially now that Maya's presence was becoming an irresistible pull."Darius." Her stern yet gentle voice cut through my stress. I turned to face Maya, whose eyes blazed with defiance and a gentler side she would never reveal. With her shoulders set, she challenged the room as if I dared to ignore her as she stood in the doorway. "Maya, what do you want?" Although my tone was harsher than I had intended, she had perfect timing and always knew when to make fun of me. She leaned ag

I hurried down the corridor, my hands shaking, leaving Darius and his frustrating contradictions in my wake. My pride and my heart were at war, and every stride felt like a rebellion against the storm that was building inside of me. Despite my body screaming for me to turn around, I didn't. He could draw me into his orbit, tearing down the barriers I had up for years and then retreating, leaving me standing in the debris. “Damn you Darius,” I muttered to myself."Are you speaking to yourself now?" As Lila emerged from a side hall with a sly smile, her voice cut through my thoughts. "I'm going to guess Darius?" My scowl only made her smile more broadly. "Lila, what do you want?" Her arms were crossed as she rested against the wall. “You appear to be about to hit someone or yell at them. He did that thing again when he pouted, gave you a pointless kiss, and then pushed you away as if you were the issue.”The only confirmation she needed was my silence. “You’re predictable, bot

"You think I can forget what you've done, Darius?" The air between us was heavy with anxiety, and as I walked the tiny cabin, my voice shook. The ensuing stillness was heavier than the words I had spoken. "Can you even hear yourself? All the secrets, the manipulation."Darius sat on the side of the bed, stiff but resigned. With a tiny bend of his head, his frigid, silver eyes, which appeared to cut right through my soul, burned with such intensity that I couldn't take my eyes off of them. Then he murmured, "I hear you loud and clear, Maya," in a gravelly whisper. "But you refuse to see the bigger picture."I abruptly turned on him as I paused in mid-step. "And what is that? That you are the protagonist of this twisted story? Because you think you know better, you've justified all of your nasty, cunning actions?"Then he stood, towering over me. We argued so much that the cabin seemed to get smaller. There was a tangible vibration of his displeasure between us. “You think I like this?

A sense of tension permeated the room as Darius walked back and forth, an unsaid weight in the air. The lanterns' gentle illumination highlighted the sharp planes of his face, and his jaw tightened in relentless frustration. Just moments before, he had had a heated discussion with the patrol guards, which had revealed additional disturbing information regarding the most recent rogue attack. Sitting on the edge of the war table, I was tinkering with a map, following the lines of a nearby pack's domain. However, the heat from Darius's kiss the previous evening distracted me. I kept thinking about it because every moment of his hand brushing against mine and every fleeting gaze was so enticing. There was no time to savor those moments, as I was reminded by the strain in his eyes. I was still waiting. The silence broke when I said, "You're going to wear a hole in the floor." Mid-step, Darius halted, his eyes darting to me. "I can't help it. This attack doesn't make sense.” With

After Darius went, the room was filled with silence. His absence was like a deep aching in my chest that I didn't want to admit. I could not remain motionless when I found the note hidden in his drawer. In my mind, the words swam, and each sentence was a puzzle piece that would not fit. "Don't trust anyone, not even your loved ones. They are watching.” The handwriting seemed strange but tidy. The elaborate crescent moon stamp on the paper appeared older than anything I had ever seen in the pack archives. Who wrote this? And why is it hidden here? I needed answers. The air outside was crisp and chilly, with stars strewn over the night sky. With only the gentle rustle of leaves accompanying me, I strolled into the gardens. This area of the estate was a haven, and I could think or at least make an effort in it. "Maya." The voice was familiar, and I froze. Darius. His voice was deep and tinged with an unidentified substance. He was standing a few feet away, his silhouette lit

The double doors of the council chamber stood as a formidable obstacle in the distance. As I approached, my steps stumbled, and the elders' words weighed heavily on my thoughts. They were concealing information that endangered Darius and the pack as a whole. And now, I was being summoned. Why? Did they know I’d been eavesdropping? The doors creaked open as two guards pulled them aside. A semicircle of high-backed chairs seated the council members in the poorly illuminated circular area. I walked in, my heart racing, as their eyes stared into mine. “Maya”. Elder Ren said in a tight voice. "We have a lot to talk about a lot." I straightened my back, trying to look composed. “I'm listening." "You've been… close to Alpha Darius," he said, his eyes squinting. I looked him in the eye and answered, "Yes. Is that a problem?" Tension increased in the room. With a harsh voice, Elder Mira interrupted, "We've seen your influence on him. That's concerning." I felt my chest constr

My heart pounded between my ribs, as I strode outside the council chamber, replaying the elders' whispers in my head. “Darius would never forgive us if he knew the truth about the attack.”Which truth? And why was he not being told about it? I leaned against the chilly stone wall and wished my heart had slowed down. Whatever they had to conceal, it wasn't good. But a part of me was hesitant to take action. I can't casually interrupt a man like Darius, especially if it is half-baked suspicions. I straightened as the door flung open. Darius came out with a sad yet composed look. His unfathomable, dark gaze fell upon me. "Maya," he uttered in a deep, authoritative voice. "Why are you still here?" "I could pose the same question to you," I joked while crossing my arms. He twitched his lips but did not smile. Instead, he moved closer, shadowing me with his massive body. Though his words lacked genuine anger, he said, "Don't play games with me right now." "I'm not," I shot back,
