My heart pounded between my ribs, as I strode outside the council chamber, replaying the elders' whispers in my head. “Darius would never forgive us if he knew the truth about the attack.”

Which truth? And why was he not being told about it?

I leaned against the chilly stone wall and wished my heart had slowed down. Whatever they had to conceal, it wasn't good. But a part of me was hesitant to take action. I can't casually interrupt a man like Darius, especially if it is half-baked suspicions.

I straightened as the door flung open. Darius came out with a sad yet composed look. His unfathomable, dark gaze fell upon me.

"Maya," he uttered in a deep, authoritative voice. "Why are you still here?"

"I could pose the same question to you," I joked while crossing my arms.

He twitched his lips but did not smile. Instead, he moved closer, shadowing me with his massive body. Though his words lacked genuine anger, he said, "Don't play games with me right now."

"I'm not," I shot back, looking him in the eye. "I simply thought that you might need… support."

Darius raised an eyebrow, a glimmer of laughter piercing the storm cloud in his eyes. “Support?"

With no intention of giving in, I replied, "Yes. Even Alpha men need someone in their corner.”

He merely stared at me, his eyes probing for a time. Then, much to my astonishment, he chuckled. "You are amazing."

I remarked calmly, "I get that a lot," though the tension between us was anything but.

Something heavy rapidly replaced his amusement. He mumbled, raking a hand through his dark hair, "I don't have time for this. The southern border is under attack. Rogues. It is worse that we thought.”

“Then let me help you.” I said right away.

Darius stopped, his hand motionless. "No."

"No?"

"You're staying here." He said firmly. “This is not your fight."

With my frustration rising to the surface, I took a step closer. “If it’s not my fight, then whose is it? I’m part of this pack now, whether you like it or not.”

"I'm not going to put you in the middle of a battlefield because of that," he said sharply.

I didn't back down and kept looking into his eyes. "I can look after myself."

His imposing presence made my breath catch as he drew closer to me. "You don't know what you're asking for," he murmured, growling low.

"Then explain to me," I argued, my voice quivering.

With his mouth clenched, Darius gazed at me. I briefly believed that he might let me in. Then he stepped back and shook his head. "Maya, not now."

"Why not?" I moved forward and made a demand.

He blurted out, "Because I can't afford to lose you," before he could stop himself.

His confession slammed into me, shifting the atmosphere between us. A peculiar mixture of vulnerability and rage twisted inside me, making my chest constrict.

My voice shaking with emotion, I murmured, "You don't get to decide what I'm worth."

His voice rising, he shouted, "And you don't get to put yourself in danger just to prove a point."

The sound of hasty footsteps cut through our disagreement. His face was white as one of his guards showed up. "Alpha," he said, panting. Things are getting worse at the border. We have to go now.”

With a hardened gaze, Darius nodded. He gave me a fleeting glance, his eyes unreadable. There was no room for argument in his tone as he said, "Stay here."

I wanted to attack him and tell him to let me assist. However, the expression in his eyes halted me. Something unspoken and raw, something I could not comprehend fully.

I caught hold of his wrist as he turned to walk away. He turned back to face me and froze.

Be careful." I murmured silently.

There was a slight softening of his expression. “Always."

With his guards, he withdrew and vanished down the hallway. My heart was heavy with a mix of anxiety and frustration as I watched him leave.

Once he was out of sight, my determination solidified. I refused to stand by and watch as secrets were tossed around me.

I walked silently over the stone floor toward the elders' chambers. I would find out what they were hiding from Darius if they were.

Upon arriving at their chamber, I strained to hear the muffled noises within by pressing my ear against the door.

With a quiet voice, one declared, "This attack is a test. The others will only become more confident if the rogues are successful."

"But if Darius discovers we hid information—"

"He won't," said the first voice. "We'll handle the fallout when it occurs. Our attention must be on containment for the time being.”

I felt a knot in my stomach. Darius was unaware the border strike was a perverse test.

The creaking of the door opened before I could process what I had heard. I staggered back as one of the elders emerged, my heart pounding.

When he noticed me, his eyes narrowed, and he froze. "Why have you come here?"

"I could ask you the same thing," I responded, attempting to sound assured despite my heart palpitations.

His countenance flickered with distrust as his eyes darkened. "You have no place here, girl. Return to your chamber.”

I stayed put. "What are you hiding?"

The older man approached, his presence threatening. "You don't know what you are talking about," he remarked icily. “And if you value your place here, you’ll stay out of matters that don’t concern you.”

He walked right by me and disappeared down the hallway before I could reply. I stood there with my thoughts racing.

There was more to it than a rogue attack, whatever it was. The elders were untrustworthy if they were willing to keep the truth from Darius.

I need to warn him. However, I wondered if I would get the chance n time because he had already headed to the border.

A sense of tension permeated the room as Darius walked back and forth, an unsaid weight in the air. "You're either brave or stupid to come here alone."The voice pierced through the silence like a blade, cold and harsh, sending a shudder down my spine. I didn't flinch. I couldn't afford to. My hands tightened at my sides, nails cutting into my palms as I turned to face him. "I don't have time for games. You know why I'm here." My voice was steady, but the effort to keep it that way cost me. Alpha Darius Blackthorne stood just a few steps away, his towering figure backlit by the weak light of the moon. His presence filled the clearing, heavy and overpowering like the storm rolling in overhead. His black eyes fixed on mine, unblinking, unreadable. "And yet you're still standing in my territory, rogue." His lips twisted into something that wasn't quite a smile. It was more like a warning. "That's bold, even for someone like you." “Someone like me.” The words curled around my chest, suffocating. He didn't need to say what he meant. A rogue wolf, packless and unwelcome, was barel

The gloom from the previous night clung to me like a second skin, even as the dim morning light trickled through the shutter apertures. The reality of my surroundings had pushed sleep away. A knock on the door broke the delicate silence. A rough voice called, "Get up," from the other end. My muscles automatically stiffened. I waited for the seconds to pass, hoping that whoever it was would become agitated and walk away. Instead, the door swung open. "You're testing my patience, rogue." I recognized that voice without having to look. The guy in the doorway caught my attention, and his imposing size made the cramped space feel even more oppressive. With his arms folded and his gaze sweeping over me, Darius leaned against the frame. I swung my legs over the edge of the bed and shot back, "I didn't realize this was a military camp." "It is now." He grinned coldly and strategically. "And you're late." "For what, exactly?" Refusing to be intimidated by his stature or autho

"You shouldn't be here, rogue." My spine tingled as the voice spoke, every word brimming with hate. My wolf scratched under my skin, restlessly stirring. I jumped off the bed, looking for the source in the shadows. "Who is there?" Although I spoke steadily, my heartbeat was deceiving me; it pounded in the quiet like a drumbeat. A massive figure emerged from the shadows as they changed. In the dim moonlight, his wolf-like smile shone brightly. His scent was one of Power and something sinister; therefore, he wasn't just any old guy. Midnight Pack, although not a follower of Darius. He circled me like prey and remarked, "You've made quite the impression." "I'm afraid you won't be around for long." "Give me a try." Now, my voice was sharper, with every syllable laced with defiance. His chuckle was a deep, menacing rumble. "I'll give you that you have fire." He made a lunge. Instinctively, I ducked, but he was too quick. He tugged me toward him, his hand closing like iron arou

"She is troubled.”When I saw her standing in the center of the training yard, her eyes burning like fire, my first thought was that trouble had never appeared so alluring. I was now wondering what the hell I was doing as I stood at her door for the second consecutive night. My Alpha side, who insisted on control and reason, knew better. She had a certain quality, though. Her scent was overwhelming, akin to wildflowers following a rain. My wolf became agitated and began to pace inside of me like a beast in a cage. I waited while gently knocking. I opened the door after hearing no response. "Maya?" The bed was unaltered, the room deserted. My heart pounded the strange feeling at once grating and frightful. Following her scent took little time. I found her squatting low, with her back to me, close to the pack's boundary. The moonlight silvered her, and her hair fell over her shoulders, constricting my chest. "What the hell are you doing out here?" I didn't want to sound

Lysander was before me, a ghost from a past life I had long forgotten. The last time I saw his smug smile, he had betrayed everything our pack stood for, and it wasn't enjoyable. "What's wrong, Alpha?" Lysander drew back, advancing a step. "I think you've seen a ghost." With my wolf growling just below the surface, I bared my teeth. "Why have you come here?" "Me?" He cocked his head in jest. “Darius, this is the moment I've been waiting for. I'm waiting to remind you that you have blood on your hands.”Next to me, Maya tensed up. It wasn't time to explain, but I could feel her eyes on me, asking questions. I stepped ahead of her and hissed, "You're trespassing. And you understand the meaning of that." "Oh, I do." Lysander grinned, but it stopped short of his eyes. “But, tonight, this isn't about pack rule or territory. It's about you. About finishing what, we started. The memories clambered to the surface, uninvited and unrelenting. There had been a time when Lysander an

"You think I can forget what you've done, Darius?" The air between us was heavy with anxiety, and as I walked the tiny cabin, my voice shook. The ensuing stillness was heavier than the words I had spoken. "Can you even hear yourself? All the secrets, the manipulation."Darius sat on the side of the bed, stiff but resigned. With a tiny bend of his head, his frigid, silver eyes, which appeared to cut right through my soul, burned with such intensity that I couldn't take my eyes off of them. Then he murmured, "I hear you loud and clear, Maya," in a gravelly whisper. "But you refuse to see the bigger picture."I abruptly turned on him as I paused in mid-step. "And what is that? That you are the protagonist of this twisted story? Because you think you know better, you've justified all of your nasty, cunning actions?"Then he stood, towering over me. We argued so much that the cabin seemed to get smaller. There was a tangible vibration of his displeasure between us. “You think I like this?

I hurried down the corridor, my hands shaking, leaving Darius and his frustrating contradictions in my wake. My pride and my heart were at war, and every stride felt like a rebellion against the storm that was building inside of me. Despite my body screaming for me to turn around, I didn't. He could draw me into his orbit, tearing down the barriers I had up for years and then retreating, leaving me standing in the debris. “Damn you Darius,” I muttered to myself."Are you speaking to yourself now?" As Lila emerged from a side hall with a sly smile, her voice cut through my thoughts. "I'm going to guess Darius?" My scowl only made her smile more broadly. "Lila, what do you want?" Her arms were crossed as she rested against the wall. “You appear to be about to hit someone or yell at them. He did that thing again when he pouted, gave you a pointless kiss, and then pushed you away as if you were the issue.”The only confirmation she needed was my silence. “You’re predictable, bot
