Nolan’s POV
My sister is going to be the death of me. “Breanna, why don’t you and Britton grab the whiskey, I’ll grab some ice cream, and little wolf, will you please come join us? I say, as I look up at her shocked, brilliant green eyes. She nods at me and begins her descent down the stairs to me. “Go ahead and sit in the lounge, Clara.. We will meet you there. I apologize for the outburst, I wasn’t expecting company, you see…”Breanna is my little sister, she turns 18 in a month and is convinced that Britton is her mate. He is 21 and feels the same. My gut instinct is to be her protector without our parents here, but I have to allow her to make that choice. My biggest fear is that he will end up not being her mate, and they will both be heartbroken. The mate bond is held as sacred in our pack, and even if you have a chosen mate, most choose to forsake their chosen for the Luna gifted mate.. Not to mention the fact that we are triple hybrids, which she and I have only been able to hide thanks to our mother’s barrier spell around our pack territory. Luckily our mother acquired herbs for us that suppress the hybrid side when we shift, and we have a surplus of them in a greenhouse on my grounds. There is so much that I am terrified to tell Clara, and I am wondering if I can.. She seems guarded in her own right. The game of 20 questions was a great ice breaker but it took everything in my power not to berate her with questions, to know all of her deepest secrets. From the moment I saw those green eyes through the glass, my heart was hers, but my secrets are suffocating.I walk into the kitchen and see the two “love birds” grabbing four cartons of ice cream from the fridge. “I thought I put you two on whiskey duty?” I say with a smirk. Breanna chuckles and says, “I assumed you wanted to speak to us before we bombard.. Clara, is it? Your show of protection was interesting to see from a different point of view for once… not aimed towards me, but still putting poor Britton in your clutches. She raises her eyebrows and smirks at me.“Britton, yes.. Sorry about that. When you imprint on your mate you will fully understand. We only just found each other and have been back on our territory for a few hours. I didn’t want to announce she was here yet so as not to overwhelm her.” I say.“Overwhelm her, or are you still deciding whether or not to divulge things to her completely?” Breanna says.“Not everyone is as forthcoming as you are Breanna, and Britton, if I find you ever betray our trust you will be eliminated.”Britton nods in understanding and says, “I will never betray you. I know she is my mate, and two weeks from now, you will see it too.”“We will see, won’t we? Anyways, there is a beautiful little wolf waiting for me in the other room. Grab the ice cream and let’s get going?” I say as I grab four spoons from the drawer.I walk towards the lounge with them in tow and turn quickly around, almost forgetting to remind them, “Behave. It has been an incredibly long and exhausting day for her. We will need to go to bed earlier tonight. We have much to discuss tomorrow and I will have to hold a pack meeting to come up with an excuse for walking away from battle. I can only assume you heard something from Amelia or Stephen?”Breanna and Britton look at each other, their arms intertwined at the elbow and each holding one end of the tray with their free hands. They smile at one another as if speaking their own language. Britton smiles at her before turning to me and says, “You know the leak was obviously Brooks. He can’t keep anything to himself. The first thing he did was come straight to my house to find Breanna and I, telling us we just had to come surprise you. We didn’t know what we were walking into but needed to come see what the fuss was about.” Breanna interrupts and says, “We couldn’t be happier for you. I know that you’ve waited a long time for this.”I walk over and squeeze her shoulder and smile. I can barely mumble, “Thank you.” when Timothy walks out of the lounge beaming as if he’s imprinted on Amelia all over again.Gods, the ice cream will be melted before I can even reach Clara at this point, the poor little wolf has been waiting for some time now. She must be irritated.Timothy approaches and says, “She is truly a gem, Alpha Nolan. I brought her some biscuits from Amelia’s secret stash. I can’t wait to get to know her better.”“Thank you, Timothy, I appreciate you and Amelia always taking care of everything, even before I can think of it. Please take the rest of the evening off, and Clara and I will be pleased to spend breakfast with you in the morning, should she agree.” I say.Timothy is beaming and says, “I cannot wait. She has already asked that of me, Alpha. I intended to ask your permission. It appears we will be joining you for breakfast!” And he takes his leave to his and Amelia’s quarters.I grab Breanna by the shoulder and she puts a hand on Britton’s, knowing to stop him before he is spotted by Clara.“Brianna, I need you to reign in your ability while we are in there. As much as I’m desperate to know everything I can, I want her to trust us. We need mutual trust if we can make this mate bond work. I have been dying to meet my mate since before I came of age, but I have also been terrified because I knew I would have to share what we are.” I told her through the link. She chuckles out loud and link both Britton and I, “WE will keep our abilities to ourselves for now, but I have a feeling we can trust her. I sensed something in her that felt familiar. And as far as my curiosity goes I won’t dig too deeply, but I want to know you can trust her before you go spilling secrets.” She finishes with a wink.“She doesn’t even fully know what she is, so how can we be sure? Her grandmother is in the same coven mother was, and she knows but made it clear that Clara doesn’t. She told her she would give her all of the answers she has been looking for when we return to her pack. And then she gave her a packet of Angelica root telling her to use it to shift while she was here… I don’t know if she was hinting to me that she knows what we are or truly protecting her from herself. I don’t want to be the one to tell her in case my assumptions are wrong, and also it shouldn’t be us. It should be her grandmother to tell her, especially considering she knows everything and I would be hedging a guess.” I ramble on exasperatedly through the link.Brianna chuckles and gives me a knowing smirk. “You haven’t rambled on like that in a while.. Not since you became Alpha anyways, Mr. Short Sweet Sentences and one word answers.”Clara peeks her head around the corner and whispers, “Rambling through the link are we? I wasn’t sure I was that bad, but now you’ve confirmed it. I was wondering why it got so quiet around here. ”Goddess, she is perfect. A tiny, gorgeous spitfire, made just for me. I crack a genuine smile at her and say, “Yeah, we were looking for a way to get rid of you so we grabbed four different types of ice cream to choose from, spoons only, no bowls allowed. I figured you couldn’t possibly be a glutton for delicious frozen punishment like we are and you’d run for the hills.”Brianna and Britton burst into a fit of laughter and Brianna links her by the arm with her own, looking back at me and winking her now glowing blue eyes at me as she leads a clueless Clara to the lounge.Britton knows, but so does everyone in our pack. They are sworn to secrecy, but most everyone here is like us, hybrids of one sort or another. The Hidden Moon pack is just that, hidden. It’s why I waited so long to attack the Evergreen Crest pack. We have our protective barriers, created when my father created this pack. They keep out anything Demonic, hybrid or not, so I at least know Clara isn’t a demon. But when she passed through the barrier, I couldn’t miss how her eyes opened wide, like she felt the magic. Maybe she is like me? Goddess, I can only hope. Our mates are supposed to be our equals and bring us to meet our best possible potential.“Earth to Nolan!” Britton waves his hand in front of my face to bring me out of my trance like state. “Stop overthinking everything.” he whispers. “She is your mate for a reason. Just like I know your sister is mine. I can’t wait to be your annoying brother in law for life, Alpha.”I give him a smirk, pat his back, HARD and say, “You’re not my brother in law, yet, Britton. And you better pray you are her true mate or I’ll break your legs for kissing my sister and getting her attached to you.”He simply smiles and says, “I look forward to keeping my legs in tact and your sister on my arm.” as he runs into the lounge.COWARD.I walk into the lounge and she is on the edge of the long leather sectional with a knit blanket on her legs, a carton of pistachio ice cream in one hand, the spoon in the other, and a glass of whiskey in her lap. Her cheeks are rosy from the fireplace she is leaning as closely to as possible over the arm of the couch, a huge smile on her face, her eyes sparkling and her hair perfectly wavy and almost glittering down to her rib cage. She looks ethereal. I can’t tell if its from the mate bond, or if maybe, just maybe is her tribrid side showing… All I know is I can’t wait to be near her again, to smell that cinnamon and vanilla scent of hers, to feel the sparks from her touch, and to tell her she stole my favorite ice cream. She hears my footfalls and looks at me, her eye contact so smoldering I can’t help but hope she feels the pull as strongly as I do. She smiles brightly and pats the couch next to her with her ice cream hand, beckoning me to sit next to her.“Ah, so you are tempting me into sitting next to you with my favorite flavor are you?” I practically rasp, not breaking eye contact and trying to find the will to breathe looking at her beauty. She blushes and says with her head lowered, “Oh.. its your favorite? I’m so sorry I took it. Its mine too, and people usually wouldn’t reach for pistachio first, so I took it not even thinking.”I place my fingers under her chin and make her meet my eyes, “I’ll only forgive you this once, but I’ll be sure to keep it stocked at all times for the both of us.”It took everything in my power to sound serious before I broke down and laugh harder than I have in a long time at the look of sheer terror in her eyes at the start of my sentence, only for her to snort laughing and cover her mouth and nose in embarrassment, dropping the ice cream and spoon in her lap, but managing not to spill drop of ice cream or whiskey.“For someone so clumsy, you have a talent for not spilling.” Brianna says through a fit of giggles.**I haven’t heard that laugh in a long time. She is perfect for you. Just as sarcastic and playful as I had hoped she would be** Brianna links.**I’m starting to think so, too.** I link back.Just as I take my seat next to my beautiful, spicy, little wolf and grab a bite of pistachio from her spoon before she can, Adam kicks the door to the house in, splintering the wood in a viciously dramatic fashion and leaps over the glass table, shattering everything in its wake.Nolan’s POV Adam crouched half shifted, his claws on his hands and now bare feet digging into the glass with abandon. His crazed red bloodshot eyes with blown out pupils were not that of his human or his wolf. And they were set on only one thing, or one person, Clara. Without hesitation, Clara threw her whiskey in his face eliciting a ferocious growl that sounded like a shriek. Only one creature shrieks that way….a demon. How in the h**l did a demon get a hold of Adam in just a few short hours? I stand, shaking and letting out a roar that vibrates everything still standing in the room. I shift into my wolf and tackle him while he is still stunned from the whiskey. Britton grabs Brianna and starts dragging her from the lounge and to safety, something I don’t have time to thank him for. While Adam is pinned I sneak a glance back at Clara and she is rubbing her necklace, whispering her grandmother’s name repeatedly. While I snuck my glance at Clara, Adam manages to snake an arm
Clara’s POV I have been silent, patiently waiting for my moment to barrage my grandmother for information. I have been waiting since before I can even remember to get the answers I hope to press from her tonight. I know she said she won’t give as much detail as I’m hoping for, but the small glimmer of hope in my chest is flickering to life again. It is so hard to steel my expression but after Adam attacked, I know this is even bigger than I thought. There is no way I’m just a hybrid of witch and werewolf unless my father had some seriously powerful ancestors and hid his abilities from everyone. He was always stronger, faster, more cunning and more beautiful than every Alpha we encountered, but I always attributed it to him being my father and the love I had for him. Not to take away from his work ethic; no, my father was unmatched when it came to training and education, not only for himself but for the pack. Watching the pack decline and lose the luster it held under his rule when
Clara’ s POV - Flashback Chapter **** The air feels so heavy today. I’m suffocating under the weight of discomfort. I have been telling my father all day that something feels off. He knows, I know he knows. The fake smile he plasters on as he tries to reassure me tells me that he knows. “My darling Eliana, would you and Claire like to go shopping today?” he disregards my concern in his husky but sweet voice. “Oh, my darling Brennan, you wouldn’t be trying to get rid of us, would you?” my mother says in her melodic mocking tone. He chuckles and walks over to her, tucking her gorgeous chesnut hair behind one of her ears before he kisses her on the forehead. “I would never dream of getting rid of either of my beautiful girls.” He pulls her hands into his own, lifting them to kiss the back of her hands as he pulls her into his chest and wrapping his arms around her, before nuzzling her neck and smelling her mark. “My beautiful girls are all I have in this world, you mean everything t
***Flashback Chapter***I awoke to the sound of steady beeping. My eyes felt too heavy to open, so I thrashed my head around trying to muster the strength to do so. They felt like lead sitting in my eye sockets. My hair stuck to my face, greasy and unkempt, smelling oddly of dirt and smoke, the feeling of uncleanliness irritating me further in my inability to just open my damn eyes. If I can just lift my hands up to my face I can pry them open, push my hair back, anything. I try lifting my arms but they too, feel like I’ve had a bear sitting on them and I have no awareness or feeling in them. Betrayed by my own body. I lay there, hearing the scuffle of people walking past, tennis shoes periodically squeaking on a tile floor, low chatter and beeping around all me. I can smell hand sanitiser, soap and rubbing alcohol permeating the air, the uncomfortable smell tickling my nose and bringing back memories of injuries of the past. I start to focus and then all I am able to focus on is t
“In the hospital… he all but told me. He stepped up and took my father’s place. He took my place, while I was sedated in that bed. We never stood a chance that day. He set everyone up. He is the reason my parents are dead. I should have known when only they lost their lives that day. It was targeted.” I say seething. My fists are clenched so tight my knuckles are turning white and I have to reign myself in to keep from clawing myself through my palms. The tears welling in my eyes are threatening to spill and I will them to stay in their place. Nolan has a hand on the small of my back, the sparks dancing along my skin like a calmingly delicious jolt of comfort that tingles all the way to my heart. The sign of a True Mate. I had yet to acknowledge it, but now I obviously can’t deny the truth. Grams confirmed my suspicions, but what does this mean I am? What is he? “Yes. But he didn’t count on you surviving. I never left you in the hospital, alone. He knows you are more than what we sa
Nolan’s POVWe leave Clara and her grandmother in the office to have a moment to speak and my chest is tight walking away from her. I can barely think of anything but her as we make what feels like the twenty mile long stretch to the top of the stairs, when in reality it is a mere four doors down the hallway. I reach the top of the staircase and exhale heavily, not realizing I had been holding my breath the whole time. “They will be okay, she will be okay, Nolan.” Brianna reassures me as she wraps her arm over my shoulder. “I just can’t fathom not knowing such a big part of herself for her entire life. Her grandmother essentially told us she is like we are, how are we supposed to continue keeping that from her? What do you think her gift is, if she is like we are?” “Ohh I honestly can’t wait to find out. This is going to be incredible, Nolan. To have someone like us, as a part of our family! And when she isn’t being suppressed anymore she is going to feel so powerful. Not to mentio
Adam’s POV I woke up with a brain melting migraine, trying desperately to peel my eyes open. Where the hell am I? The last thing I remember is going to the edge of the territory to go shopping and fill my empty fridge and meet Leila Knox, the wolf I met on a dating app to see if she was my mate. Living in a more private pack makes finding your mate a lot more difficult, and my schedule as a warrior makes it extremely difficult to make it off territory. I figured I may as well kill two birds with one stone, meet her for coffee and then get groceries on my way home. If she ended up being my mate, at least I could buy whatever food she liked, my own pitiful rationale mixed with wishful thinking told me. I just couldn’t wait to see the gorgeous girl with honey brown hair and golden eyes. She has consumed nearly every thought of mine. Too bad I never made it to her. I stopped for fuel at a station just outside of our territory, hopped out of my truck, put my debit card in the reader and
Adam’s POV (continued) “What the hell is this? Who the hell is this? And uh, a little later there bud.” I say, showing Brianna and Britton the message. “So they knew you could be possessed by the demon, and told you to get selenite, but they were too late. We need to see if we can get a trace on this number or track down an IP address, VPN, carrier information or something. Unless it’s a burner, we’ll find them.” Britton says. “We have to at this point. Now I have even more questions than answers. And who is the redhead? Am I supposed to know a redhead?” I say to the room. “Leila’s not a redhead?” Britton asks “Nope, she’s got a gorgeous head of thick honey hair.” Brianna says, winking at me. “Let’s see if we can salvage this before Nolan gets back down here.” “Salvage what?” Nolan asks, coming down the stairs. “Nothing important.” I say quickly. “Ooooh not true. Adam’s love life. However now that you’re back I suppose that will be on the back burner. You should definitely te
Clara’s POV I watch as Nolan retreats up the stairs to his office, following the auburn haired vixen from my nightmares, literally. I can’t help but wonder about their history, especially after walking into the kitchen seeing her hands on his arms.. Those arms are mine. It took every bit of control I have to muster the energy to reign in my wolf. Carina is strong and seeing someone eyeing Sabre aka Nolan has her gnashing in my mind, still trying to claw her way through and slice Irina’s throat. But I can’t just hold Irina accountable, I’ll need to find the courage to grill Nolan about her when I see him after breakfast. Grandma eyes me warily while we make our way through the breakfast buffet, as I stab waffles with more zest than necessary, imagining their faces as I do so. I’m moving my way to the sausages, picturing a different appendage when she finally breaks the awkward simmering silence of anger. “Darling girl, if you don’t control your stabby behavior, the rest of this pack
Clara’s POV ******* I’m a bundle of nerves. I can feel my anxiety running through me like electricity crackling in my veins. I smooth the front of my dress down at my waist trying to collect myself. Nolan left me a note on my nightstand asking me to meet him in the small clearing behind the pack house for a romantic picnic dinner. No one has ever gone through the trouble of something so sweet or elaborate for me. I usually hate surprises but I can’t wait for this one. I follow the trail of tea lights from the edge of the woods towards the clearing, walking carefully as not to make much noise. I know he’ll be able to catch my scent once I’m close enough anyways. I’m playing different scenarios in my mind, imaging doing a lot more than kissing him thanks to this romantic scene. The wind is blowing softly, the smell of pine and Rainier cherries wafting around me. It’s not cold but it’s not warm enough. I wrap my arms around me to comfort myself from the wind chill, wolves don’t get co
Nolan clears his throat and backs away from me slowly, smirking and trying to hide his embarrassment. His lips are red and swollen, and his eyes are twinkling, flickering between his brilliant blue and the gorgeous amber Color of Sabre’s. Seeing this strong Alpha male smirking at me isn’t helping the situation at all.. I, on the other hand, could just about die from embarrassment. Now that we’ve disconnected I can smell my arousal in the air around us. I shoot up from the couch, tucking my hair behind my ears and then putting my fingers on my lips, still feeling the tingles of the mate bond on the now inflated feeling skin. I’m sure I am as red as a tomato from the tip of my ears to my toes. I cross my arms over my chest and shuffle my feet, looking at my grandmother before lowering my head. “Oh sweet girl, he is your mate. You don’t need to be embarrassed. It’s not like I’ve never seen two people kiss before. However, I’ve never seen your beautiful skin such a shade of scarlet...”
Clara’s POV We all follow Nolan in a somewhat single file line upstairs to our respective rooms, Brianna is thrilled and giddy, probably pumped full of adrenaline and now sugar from today’s activities. Everyone aside from her seems either exhausted or solemn or both. Nolan pulls Adam aside for a quick talk and a hug, and we all go about our business heading to bed so as not to intrude on or hear their conversation. Grams reels me in tight to her side, locking our elbows and resting her head against mine. I nuzzle her from the side, rustling her perfect hair with my forehead; my own silent feud simmering down, knowing she just wants me safe. She has always been my safe place and my rock, yet now I’m supposed to trust Nolan this way, as my partner, my true mate. My stomach churns at the thought of trusting another person as wholly as I do her, or even more so, as they say with your mate. With her free hand, Grams pulls my face towards hers and places a gentle kiss on my forehead as sh
