"Mom, do you know where dad's keeping his torture tools?" I asked after we were done eating, helping mom clear the table.

"Are you sure you want to take that path, Draven?" Instead of answering, she asked, emptying the left-over remains on the plates into the bin and then handing them to me as I loaded them into the dishwasher.

"What path?" I asked, leaning on the kitchen counter, when she stopped with the dishes.

"You once told your father that he enjoys spilling innocent blood and that you don't want to be like him." She reminded me of the day my father accused me of being lenient with Gwen. As it panned out, he had been correct all along.

"Now you want his tools? What changed?" She probed, a smile dancing on her lipstick-covered lips. I didn't understand what she found funny in our conversation.

"Nancy isn't innocent." I pressed my teeth together, forcing the words in between them.
