"I love Drake,” she says, once we’re alone. “And he loves me.”

I look up, her words are like a slap to the face.

"What?" I ask.

She laughs, a slow, mean sound. "I love Drake and he loves me,” she repeats the words I can’t fully understand.

A deep heat starts to curl from my stomach, moving into my limbs. I can feel my nails growing slightly into claws, the skin around my mouth tightening.

"I've loved him since before he even knew you existed,” Mallory says.

The heat rises up my throat to my cheeks now. I can feel my eyes turning yellow.

"You don't know anything about me or Drake,” I snarl.

"I know everything I need to know." Her eyes glitter, her mouth stretches into a wide, vicious smile. "I know you're trying to steal him away from me."

"I'm not trying to steal him away from anyone,” I insist.

"You don't have to try," she spits the words at me. "You're already doing it.”

She laughs again, the same mean laugh.

The heat rises up my neck now, searing my face. I can feel my mouth stretching into an animal grimace, my tongue stretching out to the edge of my jaws. I can't control it, can't stop it. I am going to shift, and there is nothing I can do about it.

"Drake loves me," Mallory says. "He always has. And I'm never going to let him go. And you…you’re just pathetic. And I’m going to make sure he knows it."

A howl rips from my throat, and I lunge at her. I don't think; I just act.

I have my hands on her throat before she has time to react. I can't hear anything but the sound of my own screams, can't see anything but the yellow of her eyes.

I am on top of her, slamming my fist into her face again and again.

I have her hands pinned down on either side of her head.

I have my claws at her throat.

"Stop!" someone yells. "Sasha, stop!”

Then I hear a howl, and my hands are yanked off of her.

Someone pulls me back.

I get myself under control, just barely. Both Mallory and I are breathing heavily, and I see a shift in her eyes.

Mallory looks at me and smiles.

"I'm going to get my revenge when you aren't looking," she says. "Watch your back. I'm going to get the Alpha to hate you and banish you for good."

Mallory turns and storms off.

I watch her go, ashamed I have let my rage get the best of me.

I can’t get Mallory's words out of my mind. What if Mallory is serious? What if she really does get the Alpha to hate me?

What if she really does get me banished from the pack?

Suddenly, everything seems so uncertain. A world without the pack is too scary to think about. Without the pack, I will be alone. Without the pack, I will be nothing.

I shiver, unsure of what to do.

But before I can think it through, I hear a snap in the woods.

Followed by another.

And another.

They come on hard and fast, an avalanche of branches breaking, and I sense that a war has arrived at our doorstep.

“Ambush!” I shout.

I am the first of our pack to break into action.

I turn and see a huge pack of rogues streaming from the woods, and I am already in motion, racing to meet them.

I growl at them, my eyes glowing yellow. They look stunned for a second, but then they run at me.

I leap at the pack, slashing my claws at their throats one by one. The rogues fall around me, dead.

Soon, the rest of my pack is there. But more and more rogues leap out of the woods.

I slash left and right, fighting for my life.

I am breathing heavily. I’ve killed so many rogues.

But there is no end in sight.

My Alpha leaps high into the air, dodging to the side of the rogues, then landing with a punch that sends one rogue flying back into the trees.

But many more rogues surround him.

It’s a hard fight, and no one is winning. I can’t believe it. He always defeats others easily. What is going on?

I kill as many as I can, but at the same time, I cannot help noticing that my friends are dropping left and right. Somehow, these rogues are killing off my pack.

The rogues fight my Alpha and the other wolves with a beautiful and brutal ferocity. They kill them savagely, ripping their throats with sharp claws and gnashing their teeth with murderous intent.

Something is not right. Is magic fueling them?

I shiver as I notice the powerful, rogue Alpha. He leaps into the air again, and in one move, lands on top of my Alpha.

With a howl, he tears off his head.

I stare at the body of my Alpha, slowly dying and bleeding out on the ground, until there is nothing left of him but a shell of a corpse.

My Alpha is dead.

The rogues killed him.

The rogues killed my entire pack.

I can hardly breathe.

I hear a growl and turn.

Their Alpha faces me. He is big and muscular. His eyes are yellow, his face covered in scars. He looks furious.

He stops and holds his hands out to his sides. He smiles and says, "Come on, little girl. Let's play with you a bit."

I growl and crouch down, ready to strike.

The rogue laughs and starts to close in on me. I tense, ready to spring.

"I've got something for you," he says.

He reaches into his pocket and pulls out something small. He holds it up in front of him with one hand and laughs again.

I leap into the air, ready to kill.

Suddenly, I hear a spraying noise and feel my body seize up mid-leap.

I fall to the ground, paralyzed.

I look up at the Alpha in confusion.

He grins and holds up a vial of wolfsbane gas.

He laughs.

"You are mine now,” he declares.

My vision grows hazy, and my head feels heavy. I try to focus on the man's face, but it blurs in and out.

A wave of dizziness overcomes me.

I know I am dying. I can feel the gas going down my throat. It is choking me.

I can feel my heart beating.

It is beating, beating, beating.

Then, I feel a beat that is different.

I feel it and know that nothing will ever be the same, as slowly, to the sound of a cruel laugh, blackness envelops me.

“What do you dream about?” he asks.A voice pulls me out of a deep sleep that it feels like I’ve been trapped in forever. I try to move, but I’m reminded that I’m in a cage. I’m in a nightmare. There’s no moving. No escape.“Or maybe it was a nightmare,” he chuckles. “Considering everything that’s happened to you lately, I’m sure it was a nightmare. “So, what are your nightmares about? Am I in them? Do I haunt you even when you close your eyes? I hope I do. If I don’t yet, I will soon.”It’s him. It’s the Alpha who led the charge that slaughtered my pack. He watches me like he’s trying to figure me out. Probably so he can figure out the best way to break me.I’ll never let him break me. I can’t imagine living while the rest of my pack is dead, but I will. I’ll stay strong so I can get revenge for them.“You know, you’re the only survivor of that fight,” he says.I try not to react outwardly, but I flinch and he notices. “Wake up,” a voice purrs. “I want you to see your new home. I want you to see everything I can offer you.”I wake, but I keep my eyes closed. I don’t want to see any of this. I recognize that voice as the person I hate most.Besides, a cage is not a home. I don’t want to think about living here forever. If this is my destiny, I hope it ends soon.“Come on, Sasha,” he says. “If you open your eyes, maybe we can have a proper introduction.”Proper introduction. I realize then that I don’t even know his name yet. It’d be nice to know the name of the man who will feel the wrath of my vengeance. So, I open my eyes. “That’s better,” the Alpha says. “My name is Tobias. Welcome to my home. Welcome to our home.”His home is nicer than I imagined a rouge’s home to be. It’s a decent sized hut with ornate furniture, a den like area for his wolf form to sleep in, and a big bed for the human form. Bits of gold are gathered around like a bird, alongside rich bursts of color.“What do you thi

“Isn’t this better?” Tobias asks, as he leads me away from Kara. “We’re bonding how we should be.”I don’t want to leave her. Though there’s nothing I can do while I’m trapped like this, at least if she’s in my sight, I know she’s not being harmed. Once I can’t see her, I don’t know what’s happening to her.“It’s nicer to spend time together when you’re not fighting me,” Tobias continues. “This is how it should be. We should be one. We should get along. That’s how we’ll lead most effectively.”I don’t want to lead with him though. I don’t want to be near him. I just want to be away from this nightmare.“You’re right,” I say. “It’s much better if we approach this together. I was silly trying to fight you, especially after seeing what you’re capable of.”“And there’s no need for you to want to get away either,” Tobias says, his mood brightening considerably. “Why would you want to? I’m the Alpha. I’m a strong Alpha too. Every woman wants to be with me. You should feel lucky.”“I do

I feel like she could get between us anyway. She hates me. I don’t want her saying awful things about me to you, putting negative ideas in your head. I don’t want to risk the two of you plotting against me.”Tobias shakes his head and I want to rip it right off his neck. He can’t kill Kara. I won’t let him.“There’s no saving her” he says. “She has to die. It’s for the best. It’ll save our marriage.”“Lying to me isn’t a great way to start our marriage,” I remind him. “If you really want to be married to me, if you really want me as your mate, you shouldn’t lie to me. You should show me I can trust you.”“You can trust me,” Tobias says. “You can trust me to always do what’s right for you. What’s right for us. Killing Kara is what’s right for us.”“It’ll only hurt me,” I argue.“Pain is how you grow stro

I can’t believe I’m about to go through with this.I have to though. I have to for Kara. I have to for my pack.If I get close enough to Tobias, I can get my revenge. If I cause enough of a distraction, Kara can flee.Yet as I look at myself in the mirror, I’m not sure I can go through with this.“You’re shaking,” he says. That’s the only reason why he’s in here. So, he can see how much this is all bothering me.He takes my hand in his big, warm hands. Mine are so small while tucked into his. He could crush my fingers if he wanted to.“I’m excited,” I say, still trying to lean heavily on the lie. “This is all a lot. It’s a lot so quickly too. It’s the only chance I have at getting out of this. So, I ignore Tobias and I focus on getting the key into the lock. “I’ll train the males, while you teach our girls to be as submissive as you will be,” Tobias continues. The hope and desperation give me the kind of strength I know I’ll need if the chains unlock and…They do.I feel the chains release.I almost cry as they fall to the floor of the canoe.Tobias stops talking.“You don’t want to do anything stupid,” he says in a low, deep, slow manner. “If you try to escape, I will kill you, Sasha. The fact that my pack is slaughtered and I’m alone without a home to go back to.What am I supposed to do now? My only goal before was to get away from Tobias and get my revenge. I’ve done both of those things, and I hope Kara has escaped by now too. So, what’s my purpose?“To get yourself away from here,” I mumble to myself. “That’s your purpose, of course. It’s a special day for us, for the whole pack. I couldn’t be more excited. Though I know there is something we must do first to move past everything. There’s something we have to do to get a good start on our life. Zach and I walk into the jailhouse together. We’re going to face this together, just like how we face everything else. We’ll stand as a united front, as we always should be.Lavender is waiting in a corner cell. We’ve made sure she’s been cared for during this time, getting adequate food and water as needed. Her life here hasn’t been comfortable, but we’ve granted her more mercy than she should’ve been given considering all of the hurt she’s caused. She looks up at us with fear on her face as we approach her. I think after staying in her for quite some time, she has realized that Zach isn’t going to come in and save her. She has to pay for her crimes.“We’ve finally decided on a fate for you,” I say, standing in front of her.“Please, don’t let her kill me,” she says t

My gaze stays on Zach.“Please, Zach,” I say, “none of this is what it looks like. I can explain. Just give me a chance.”Zach glances at Lavender, then back at me.“Okay,” he says. “I will give you a chance. Though after what happened, I’m not sure there’s much you can say to make that better.”“I know,” I reply. “And if you don’t want to talk to me after this, I understand. I’ll leave and I’ll never bother you again.“I’m sorry for what I said. I’m sorry for hurting you and embarrassing you in front of the pack. That’s why I’m doing this here now, in front of everyone. So, you can get your revenge if you want. You can reject me or you can accept me.”I start walking down the aisle towards hi

“Are you sure you’re okay with this?” I ask. I’m not sure if I’m asking because I’m not okay with this or because I suspect he’ll change his answer. Maybe both. I know this will hurt him. It’ll hurt me. This is all wrong, but it feels like I’m destined to be tortured like this.“I am,” Caden says, as he straightens his tie. His body is rigid though. His words are clipped. It seems like he’s struggling to hold onto his composure.“It hurts,” he admits. “It really does. But it’d hurt more to be with someone who doesn’t want to be with me. I can’t make her want to be with me.“I love Lavender, but if she can’t see it, this is for the best. I want to find someone who will love me back. And I’m starting to question if she is my mate at all. I don’t think a true mate can hurt you like that.”I nod. “I understand. That’s how I feel about Sasha. I feel it in my soul that she’s my mate, but I don’t understand how she could hurt me like that if she is. It’s all so confusing and awful.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Gretta says, as I panic. “I can fix this.”What if Zach is my mate? What if I’ve hurt him for no reason? If even half of what he says is true, this is awful. What I did to him is awful and I don’t think he’d ever forgive me.“It might not be true though, right?” I ask. “Zach still could be lying. That doesn’t mean he’s my mate. It doesn’t necessarily mean I ruined things.”“That’s right,” Gretta says. “You don’t know anything for sure because your mind is in a compromised state.“First, we have to get rid of the fog. Then, you’ll know that the truth is. Then, you’ll know what you have to do.”“How do we get rid of it?” I ask.“Through another potion,” she says. “But we can’t do that today. Your body is already worn down by the potion you ingested. “Your brain can be negatively affected if we keep pumping it with potions. It’s changing the way you think and feel. You can’t keep doing that without bad side effects.”“So, what do I do?” I ask. “I have to

He doesn’t have particularly high standing in the pack, so I’ve never truly thought about it. I don’t allow myself to think about it.If I fully allowed myself to dwell on it, I don’t think I’d like the answer I’d land on. So, it’s better not to let those thoughts even flutter into my brain.“He’s not,” I say. “You’re the person I love. What would give you the impression that he is the person I love?”“He told me so himself,” Zach explains. “He said that the two of you are mates. I don’t want to get between the two of you. Especially not if you are mates.”“We aren’t,” I insist. Though I know I can explore that further even if I get married to Zach. Caden and I have had our moments together before. Maybe I just feel bad for him because he seems so sad about it.What am I supposed to do though? Be with a stranger because I don’t want to make him sad? That isn’t fair to me or him.“I love you,” he says.Kara and I walk away for real this time.“I’m so glad you came,” I tell her. “The timing is perfect. I don’t know what I would’ve done if you weren’t here.”“I can’t imagine,” Kara says. “That was all a lot.”“I’m sorry,” I say. “I didn’t mean for all this drama to happen. Or at least, I thought we did.”“I’m surprised too,” Caden agrees. “It seemed like the two of you were meant to be.”“We are,” I insist. “We have to be. I’ve never felt that way about anyone else, not even close. I know we are mates.“So, I don’t understand it. And that was humiliating. It was already tough enough to get up there in front of everyone and tell them that the arrangement between Lavender and I is off. I already knew some people might judge me for it.“So, for Sasha to do something like that… And even call me out for breaking off the engagement with Lavender…”“Do you think you would forgive her?” Caden asks. “If she asks you to forgive her, of course.”“I would,” I say quietly. “It was embarra

She wants to go see her friend right away, but I want to avoid the crowd that’s going to be around them. And I need Kara to do something for me.“Okay,” she says. “As long as it’s quick though.
