Milton's P.O.V

Accompanied by Richard and Adam, I walked back to my office, thinking about where she could have gone. She had disappeared from the pack, and this I was certain of when the guards I ordered to find her returned with downcast looks on their faces.

“What do we do now?” Robert asked. “If she's out there in the woods, we have to find her.”

“I thought you were against keeping her in the pack?” I asked him. “Shouldn't you be happy she's gone?”

Robert was a complicated and indecisive man. He had this habit of developing a sudden change of heart towards situations without a reason.

In this case, the hatred he had for this lady, Daciana, was still visible in his eyes, but for reasons best known to him, he believed now it was better to have her close enough and monitor her.

I waited for Robert to think of an excuse for his decision as always, and seconds later, he began.

“She could be a spy. Maybe even an assassin.” He accused her.

My eyes closed faintly as my lips spread wide in an enormous laughter. Roberts' words amused me, but he was very serious with his accusations.

I conducted myself and stared at him. Soon, Adam's voice broke the silence. “I agree with Robert,” he said.

“That Daciana is a spy, or worse, an assassin?” I asked with a smile.

“No,” Adam answered. “I agree that we have to find her. Landon seems to have taken a keen interest in her. I'm sure there's something he's hiding from you.”

“Do you think it has something to do with the red moon?” I asked, but Adam shook his head.

“I'm not ruling it out, but we'd know better once she's here to answer our questions.”

The red moon myth had become an ancient folktale, but like I was told by my father, during a red moon, it was believed that white wolves, although rare in their breed, would go rogue and wild with an insatiable thirst for blood.

It had been years since a white wolf was last born into any pack, so if London was interested in Daciana because of the red moon, “Could she be a Frost Demon?” I asked both Adam and Robert.

They exchanged a worried look and turned back to me as they both chorused. “I don't know.”

I pondered on the words of my Beta - Robert, and Adam, my childhood friend. For no reason in particular, I felt responsible for her safety, and so I tried my hardest to fight that feeling.

“She couldn't have gone far.” I rose to my feet. “We'll split into three groups of five and search the nearby woods. She couldn't have gone far -”

“Alpha, the elders wish to see you,” a guard announced, interrupting my closed door meeting.

I exhaled to suppress my annoyance. “Is it the elders? Or Davies?” I asked him.

“Davies,” he answered. “It's about the rogue girl. He found her.”

From the look on the faces of Adam and Robert, I wasn't the only one surprised to hear that Davies - the leader of the elders - had handled our rogue emergency.

Usually, he would report matters as pressing as this to the rest of the pack elders before calling my attention, but he didn't.

“Tell him we'll be there,” I informed the guard.

Adam asked to be absent, as he had to find out how Landon could waltz into the pack undetected, so Robert and I were the ones who answered Davies in his home.

I was astonished when I found him and Daciana seated like old friends, reminiscing about their childhood days over a cup of coffee.

Davies looked up when we walked in. “Milton,” He called me. “I'm glad you made it. Daciana here tells me you rescued her from Landon.” He smiled.

Robert snorted. “Foolishness,” he muttered. “How can you sit here and dine with this mysterious woman?”

“Robert, watch your tongue while in my home.” Davies warned.

“That's enough,” I said to both of them.

It was strange that Davies couldn't sense it, that Daciana was a rogue. Yes, her scent was different. She appeared innocent and fragile, like one who had just gone out for a stroll and got ambushed, but I knew she was rogue, so did Robert and Adam. Why couldn't Davies see it too? I wandered.

“Why didn't you report this back to the elders? That you saw an unfamiliar woman in the pack?” I asked Davies, but before he could answer, I turned to Daciana.

“And you,” I said. “Why did you run away?”

“What gave you the idea that I tried to run away?” She looked me dead in the eye and smiled. “I simply went out for a walk in your garden to clear my head,” she said.

“But I sent guards to look for you. Why didn't they find you?”

“Because I had taken her with me. A strange woman in the Alpha's garden this close to the full moon celebrations has only ever meant one thing,” Davies smiled. “She's your mate, isn't she?”

Daciana and I glanced at each other in an unpleasant manner and chorused, “No!”

Apparently, Davies had gotten the entire situation mixed up. I had promised him and the elders I'd find my mate before the village festive seasons began and seeing Daciana, he must have assumed she was the one. If he knew she was a rogue, he would have ripped her apart. 1His hatred for rogues surpassed that of Robert.

“If she's not your mate, Milton. Who is she?”

Davies became more wary of the person he let into his home. His eyes stayed on Daciana as he stalked her, cautious of every movement she made.

I stepped in between them. “Davies, this is Daciana. Robert, Adam, and I found her being attacked by Landon in the woods. We suspect she's a rogue and that this might have something to do with the red moon.”

I whispered the last part of my sentence to him, ensuring that Daciana didn't hear me, but to my disappointment, she did.

“What's the red moon?” She asked. “And what does it have to do with me?”

All eyes in the room turned to her. I felt relieved that she knew nothing about the red moon, so maybe she wasn't who we were after.

“What if we're wrong?” I asked Robert, but he didn't respond.

Davies placed a hand on my shoulder. “I don't know what's going on,” he said. “But if she's a rogue, then she can't be trusted.” He raised his voice somewhat like he wanted to draw the attention of the villagers walking past his house.

“Davies is right,” Robert supported. “Until we learn more about her, and why Landon attacked her so late at night, I suggest we keep her in the dungeons. She's our prisoner, not a guest.”

“She's not our prisoner,” I declared.

“Are you insane, Milton? You can't possibly want her to roam the pack freely, do you?” Robert was getting annoyed.

“No, I don't, but she's not our prisoner,” I said again.

“We could have left her in the woods to die. We could have never fought Landon for her, but we did. We brought her to our pack without her consent, so what gives us the right to make her a prisoner? She has done nothing wrong to us,” I explained.

“Not yet,” Davies chipped in.

The argument about what to do with her continued to go back and forth until she growled, frustrated by our bickering.

“Just do what your people want,” she said blankly.

“Do what?” I asked her.

"I'm a rogue and I understand if they don't trust me. I don't trust any of you either,” she said calmly.

“You can keep me in your dungeons as a prisoner until you've decided about what to do with me. I'll answer all your questions as honestly as I can, then you can decide if you want me here or if I should continue wandering in the woods,” she continued.

I wanted to talk her out of it, but she had made up her mind.

“Right now, I'm your prisoner,” she said. “Treat me like one.”

Daciana's P.O.V It was my third day in the dungeon and I hadn't been allowed the warmth of sunshine. I was locked up in a cold dark room with nothing but a candle light to keep the monsters at bay, and the company of rodents to keep me sane. Everyday, for the past three days, a guard would occasionally walk down to the dungeons to ascertain that I was still bound by my chains. After he left an elderly woman would come down with a tray of food to satisfy my hunger. Her name was Elena. She was short and had hips that could barely ease her passing through the door. I was never able to get a good look at her face due to the dungeons' poor lighting, so all I knew about her was that she was a mother of two strong boys whom she said were the Alpha's most trusted guards. Each day she came down, I asked her if she knew what the Alpha wished to do with me, and why he hadn't come down to question me yet. And each day I asked her, she would say. “Milton will come.” Today, I had no reason

Daciana's P.O.V The night after we met, Milton asked me to wait in his chambers while he discussed with the elders of his pack. I was itching to get out of here and return to my pack to make sure my sister was safe. About an hour later, Robert came into the room, his face folded. “The elders asked that you come speak with them,” he said spitefully. I took a deep breath and rose to my feet, following behind him as we walked back together to the meeting room. It was a massive room, enough to contain the entire village, but it was just for the elders. They sat across from each other on a round table, and Milton sat at the end of the room, a table before him. He barely smiled as he watched me walk into the room. I figured he was always like that, but the elders clearly didn't seem so pleased to see me, especially Davies. We had a rough start after his false assumption, and ever since then, he's been out to have my head on a spike. When I was close enough, he raised a hand to

Daciana's P.O.V My third day living as a member of Milton's pack wasn't exactly going as either of us had pictured it over breakfast this morning. I still had not asked him the name of his pack, but I hoped it would come up in a conversation. Some time in the afternoon, I took a stroll through the village square, hoping to buy something for Amelia. Whenever I wanted to get something off my mind, I'd buy her gifts. Her smile whenever I gave them to her always made me happy. Adam told me about an old relic store down the street of the village square. The villagers mostly abandoned and forsook it, but the old woman who owned it never gave up on the secrets her store held. The roof was nearly in ruins, a fallen tree branch resting perfectly above it. The stone facade wall was covered in creeping ivy, and moss grew at the edges of the window frame. The door creaked open slowly and the bell above it chimed gently. Its soft ring lingered as I stepped into the store and closed the do

Milton’s P.O.V The incident with Daciana and Mrs. Molly got to the ears of the elders not long after it happened. I was in my office later that evening when Robert walked in. He was upset and I didn't have to ask before he told me what was on his mind. “She shouldn't be here.” He announced. I watched him pace around the office. He was frustrated by Daciana's presence in the pack. He never truly said why, but he didn't approve that I let her stay in my home. “You might be my Beta, Robert; but you don't just barge into my office like that. I won't condone it next time.” I looked at him, annoyed by his presence. He didn't apologize, instead he walked up to my table and placed his hands on the table. “Milton, why do you want her to remain in the pack? Is she your mate?” He asked, his eyes sternly resting on me. “I don't know,” I said plainly, my voice offering no tone of emotion. He raised a brow at me. “I've seen the way you look at her,” he stated. “You're in love with

The servants had made sure she had a different cloth for each day she spent in the village with me. “You look nice,” I said in an even tone. She smiled gently and gave me a twirl when she walked into the office. She was beautiful. Her eyes were a perfect mix of chocolate and gold; like rich, deep pools of Amber. Her hair, silky and straight, was packed in a pigtail. It was brown just like her eyes, and her pale toned skin was light and beautiful as moonlight. “Shouldn't you still be resting?” I asked, my eyes darted towards her earlier twisted knee, which seemed perfectly fine. “It doesn't hurt as much,” she responded, aware that I was staring at her knee. “You didn't come out for dinner.” Her statement came out like a question, but I didn't know how to answer her. I massaged my forehead gently. My mind had slipped

Daciana's P.O.V There was a gentle knock on the door when I woke up in the morning. Milton walked in with a towel around his waist. He went straight for his wardrobe and pulled out a black shirt and a trouser. “You've had your bath?” I asked as I watched him slip his hands into the shirt and plant his body into his trousers. I sat upright on the bed. “Where have you been sleeping?” I looked at him. He left his bedroom for me since the day he brought me back to his pack and hasn't slept in it for a night. “I stayed in the office,” he answered, his gentle voice carried by the morning breeze. He turned around to face me once he was dressed. “Did you sleep well?” I wanted to answer him, but then I remembered that I was supposed to be mad at him for raising his voice at me last night. I looked away and lay back on the bed. I could feel his gaze linger on my body as he walked to the bed and sat down. “Is everything alright?” He asked like he wasn't the problem. I didn't a

Daciana's P.O. V I joined up with Milton along the path we'd come from. He averted his eyes when I got close and simply turned forward to keep walking. We didn't say a word to each other as we left the spring, and he would occasionally keep a distance whenever I got closer to him. I tried to comfort myself by blaming whatever it was that happened on him, but I still did not appreciate that I was snubbed all the way back to the pack. There was a cluster of villagers outside Milton's house. A few guards ran towards the house from their duty posts and only one of them came towards us, panting as he stopped in front of Milton. “What is going on?” Milton asked him, his eyes fixed on the crowd of villagers in front of his home. “Adam was attacked,” the guard said in a weary voice. “He went out on patrol with four guards. He's the only one that came back alive.” Fear surged through my body as the guard's words pierced my ears. I was worried about Adam. He was, after all, the fir

Daciana's P.O.V The air in the room grew thick, an overwhelming sensation of fear gripped me as I stood in the room with my father's killer. “You don't look so excited to see me.” Landon smiled mischievously. “How did you get past the guards?” I asked him, my voice trembling. I tried to hide my fear, but I failed. He looked around the room, admiring its features. His eyes fell on a photo of Milton on a desk across the bed. He took it in his hands and gave it a closer look. “I can see why you admire him so much,” he said softly. “He has that innocent look in his eyes. Like he would never hurt a fly.” It was weird hearing someone else talk about Milton that way, but that was exactly how he looked. Despite Milton's overwhelming aura; he looked like he could hurt no one. I shook my head, pushing away the thoughts of a man in my mind while danger stood right in front of me. “How did you get past the guards?” I asked him again. My voice was more firm this time, and he smirked

Milton's P.O.VIt had been three days since Adam brought Daciana back to the village, and she was still unconscious.I'd spent those past three days getting to know her little sister, Amelia. She was quite the charmer and had a knock for pranks and mischief. One morning, she walked into my office and leaned against the wall, crossing her arms over her chest with a confidence that seemed far beyond her age.“Are you Ciana's boyfriend?” She asked, her tone as blunt as her words. I raised my head from my paperwork and stared at her. I was at a loss for words. My mind rattled by such straightforward courage and interrogation.I leaned back in my chair and let out a hearty laugh.“Why do you ask?” I replied, amused by her audacity. Her eyes narrowed suspiciously as she stared at me, carefully observing every move that I made while seated across the table from her.“She's always said that boys are dumb. And none of the ones in our village were tough enough to handle her.” Amelia declared,

He suggested last night that we send out a search party to look for her, but I refused.I didn’t think she’d do something so reckless. I was worried about her, but I was also furious with her. She disobeyed me, roped my best friend into her plot, and ran off into the woods to go save her family. I was angry with her–angry that she had disobeyed me, and likely put herself in harm’s way, but I couldn’t stop smiling each time I realized that she had outsmarted my guards. Her courage and resilience to defile me were truly admirable. “Adam is with her,” I reminded Robert. “I’m sure they’re fine. Besides, I promised myself I wouldn’t get involved in her decisions.
