The kiss grew heated as Jade struggled with his internal wolf. He wanted to claim her at that moment. He wanted her to bear his mark, so it would be known to every shifter that she belonged to him. He wanted to rip off her dress and claim her at that moment.

But he held himself back with a herculean will. He didn't want Kalista's first time to be rushed and hurried. He didn't want to take her when she was least prepared for him. He would take it slowly with her because she deserved that and more. She was like a delicate petal that had to bloom softly and fully. Besides, he also needed to discuss the marking and mating process with her.

He tried to pull away but Kalista tightened her arms around his neck and pressed her softness against him. Jade groaned low in his throat and broke the kiss for a few seconds.

"My love," his voice sounded hoarse, raw with need. "Slow down..."

"Oh Jade," Kalista whispered against his lips, her body feeling like it was on fire. Jade had kissed her befor

Jade shut the door and immediately took Kalista into his arms again."That was just Mary," he said to her. "Her mother wants to host a celebration at night."Kalista knew because she had overheard everything, but all the pleasure she felt a moment ago had disappeared with Mary's unexpected presence. She hooked her arms around Jade's neck and stared into his eyes."What's wrong?" Jade asked when she just stared at him in silence.Kalista let out a deep sigh before she spoke what was bothering her."I know Mary didn't mean to push me, but I don't think her apology was heartfelt," she said softly. "Why do you say that?" Jade inquired, tracing light circles with his hands around her waist."I don't know, but for some reason, Mary doesn't like me," Kalista said and lowered her eyes. "Since the moment she discovered I'm your mate, she's been hostile towards me.""Don't pay attention to her my love," Jade assured her. "She's just jealous you're prettier than her."A pleased smile lit up Kal

The celebration began the moment the sun sank into the horizon. As if in agreement, a full moon slowly slipped out of the clouds, sending its silvery glow to the earth. The village slowly turned from being quiet to one of a festive mood. Lit lanterns were hung along the roof of the houses and in the trees, and under the moonlight, the lantern glistened like tiny jewels. In the middle of the village, there was a large pile of twigs and tree trunks that would be lit later as a bonfire. On one side, there were several tables filled with mouthwatering food while on the other side, there were wooden chairs meant for the elders of the village.Kalista was dressed in an elegant black dress that grazed the top of her knees. The dress contrasted prettily with her hair which spilled down her back beautifully. She stood by the door, waiting for Jade to return from where he went.Footsteps sounded close by and Kalista's face lit up in anticipation, thinking it was Jade. It wasn't him. Her expres

The moon was high up in the sky and glowing brightly when Salem stepped into the middle of the gathering and the crowd hushed instantly. Dressed in a flowing black dress with moons amd stars adorning the hem, she looked like a goddess, with her vibrant hair trailing down her back. There was a goblet of wine in her hands and she turned to the crowd before her. The flames from the bonfire lit up her emerald eyes and they glowed like jewels."People of the Mist," she began in a clear voice. "Tonight's celebration is to honor the moon goddess who has never relented in protecting us, the supernaturals, from the dangers of the human world. Also, this celebration is to welcome Alpha Jade, and Orion back into the village, after so many years."There were murmurs of surprise and a few heads turned towards Orion and Jade who was sitting close to Kalista."Thus, let us raise a toast to them, to welcome them back to the village," Salem finished and raised the goblet she held. "To the Alphas of th

"I want you to make love to me, Alpha Jade," Mary whispered huskily. The expression on Jade's face didn't change. There was a slight raise in his brows, a flicker of surprise, and even when his eyes traveled down Mary's naked body, there was still to change in his expression. Slowly his eyes moved upwards until he was staring at her."Mary, put on your clothes," he said finally in a low voice. Mary was caught off guard when Jade asked her to put on her dress. She didn't know what she had been expecting him to say but it certainly wasn't that. The look of surprise on her face disappeared and she took a seductive step forward, batting her lashes dreaming."I know what you're thinking, Alpha Jade," she began in a husky voice. "Why would I do something like this when I know very well you have a mate? The truth is, I don't care if you have a mate. I've been in love with you for so long. I fell head over heels the first time I saw you, and I haven't been able to kill those feelings.""Mar

Kalista sat listening attentively to Orion as he talked about Athena, his lost mate and the only woman he had ever loved. It was like a romance story, one filled with love and pain. When he got to the part where he got captured by Apollo's men, there was a glimmer of tears in his eyes, and Kalista knew at that moment that there were some wounds that could never be healed. Losing Athena was something Orion would never get over and it broke her heart to see him look so sad and broken."You remind me of her so much," Orion finished and finally turned to stare at Kalista. "Which was why I was plagued with painful memories when I first saw you. You look so much like Athena that one could mistake you for her."Kalista slowly looked away. She knew Orion was in pain, but he had to face reality. There was no way she was his daughter. It just didn't add up."I never knew my real mother," she said softly. "The woman who raised me found me in the forest and took me in. So... there's no way... I'

Jade's beastly transformation happened in a matter of seconds, fueled by his anger and confusion. He had never lost control like this before, and it terrified him. In his feral state, he lashed out at Mary, slashing his claws across her face. Blood sprayed in the room as Mary cried out in pain."Help! Help me!" Mary screamed out and crawled away from the feral beast. She held her injured face in her hand, trying to chant a spell of healing in her mind. The door to the room burst open once more and several witches rushed in, alarmed at the sound of Mary's screams. The sight of Jade in his beast form shocked them and one defiantly stepped in front of the white beast."Alpha Jade," he grounded out in a hard voice. "You have broken the law of our village. You have hurt one of our own and you will be punished! Shift back this instant!"While still in his beast form, Jade's memory suddenly returned in a flood of emotions and images. He remembered the night in vivid details, how Mary tried

"I want you to make love to me."Jade felt his breath catch at Kalista's whispered response. It didn't help me when she moved closer and whispered in his ear."And place your mark on me.""Kalista..." he held her waist and backed her up against a tree. His eyes glowed eeriely in the dark, desire swirling in their golden depths. "You don't know what you're talking about.""Why?" Kalista challenged him softly. "Because you've never told me about the mating process? Did you think I wouldn't find out about it?""How in Selene's name do you know about that?" Jade rasped. "I never told you for good reasons."There was no way Kalista would tell him she heard it from Mary. "What reasons, Jade?" she asked instead. "Don't you find me attractive enough?"Jade muttered a curse and grabbed both of Kalista's hands in his large palms. Swiftly, he pinned her hands above her head and leaned into her, letting her feel the heat from his body and the bulge of his arousal. At that moment, he forgot the is

"I can't believe you did such a disgraceful thing!" Salem ranted as she glared at her daughter. They were all still in the room where the incident with Jade and Mary occured. Mary was huddled in the corner of her room, trembling from shame. The bloody claw mark on her face had been healed by the healers but a faint scar remained, smeared with dried blood. "Mother...""Silence Mary," Salem snapped. "I warned you about your obsession for Jade. I told you nothing would ever be possible between you too. Our kind can never be with the shifters, but still you didn't listen. This time you went too far, trying to separate two mates, and you will be punished!""You're one to talk, Mother." Mary shot back defiantly, her eyes flashing with a mixture of anger and shame. "You say our kind can never be with the shifters, yet you spend each day of your life obsessing over Alpha Orion!"Salem's face turned red with rage, especially when she realized that Mary was right."HOW DARE YOU!" she screamed

"Tell me Salem," Jade snapped at her. "What is the curse? What will happen to my mate?"Salem shut her eyes so she wouldn't see the fear in Jade's eyes. If Jade knew what would happen to Kalista, it would break him. "Jade think about this," she tried to discourage him, but Jade was adamant."If you don't tell me, I will find out myself."Salem took a deep breath and let it out shakily. "Taking a unicorn's horn at first will kill it, because the horn is the source of their magic. It is like their life force. When cut off, it unbalances a unicorn's life. And after a while, the creature would die."Salem paused, trying to find ways to soften her words. But there was no other way. No matter how she put it, it would sound terrible."Well?" Jade prodded her when she remained silent."The unicorn would live for a few weeks trying to heal itself with its magic," Salem continued. "But in the end when it dies, whoever took its horn would die with it."It took Jade a moment to understand what

You have a lot of explaining to do, Soren Tobias," Salem said in a hard voice.Roland, whose real name was Soren took a deep breath and spread his hands in a helpless gesture. "After all these years," Mathius shook his head. "I never thought I would see the ancient elf return to this village.""Salem, I know I owe you an apology." Soren began."You damn well do," Salem snapped. "You leave this village without a word to anyone, not even me, and you think you can just waltz back in and everyone will receive you with open arms?"Soren sighed. "Hear me out first," he pleaded. "And if you still feel I'm not welcomed here, I'll leave peacefully."His words silenced Salem and she folded her arms before her."Start talking," she said....Jade stared at his mate as she lay asleep in his arms. He gently tucked in the damp strands of hair behind her ear and leaned forward slightly, placing a soft kiss on her lips. On the side of her neck, a magnificent golden mark sat prominently. "You came back to me," Kalista whispered as she threw herself into Jade's arms, her eyes filled with fresh tears.Jade said nothing as he relished the feel of his mate in his embrace, the sparks of the mate bond tingling his skin. How he had missed those sparks. He buried his nose in the crook of her neck, inhaling her sweet scent. He had missed her.Orion moved closer to Salem and lightly touched her hand."Let's give them some privacy," he whispered to her.Salem nodded and quietly left the temple, with Orion and Mathius behind her. Seeing how Jade held Kalista like his life depended on it made her remember memories with her late husband. It had been so long since she felt a man's sincere touch. Her eyes fell on Orion and she quickly looked away before he could catch her staring. She knew Orion would never be hers, so she tried as much as she could to suppress her feelings."How is the Alpha, mistress Salem?" one of the young witches asked the question that was burning a hole in e

Everywhere had gone dark when the mist surrounded Kalista and Roland. It was just like that moment when she and Jade arrived at the village of the mist for the first time. She waited a few seconds and slowly opened her eyes. They were no longer in the forest. She could see the familiar mountains in the distance. They were in the village. It was when she finally allowed herself to relax that she noticed Roland's arm wrapped around her waist.Instantly feeling uncomfortable, she pushed out of his embrace and stared at him suspiciously."What?" Roland shrugged innocently."Don't you dare give me that helpless look," Kalista snapped, hands planted on her hips. "You have a lot of explaining to do. What are you? I know you're not human. How did you know about this village? How did you know about the rune? How did you make the rune glow so brightly..."Roland just stood back and watched her with a small smile. He had fallen. So hard. Kalista tore through the forest like her life depended on it, which in a way, it did. As she ran, her eyes darted all around her. The moon was hidden behind thick blankets of clouds and there were no stars in the sky so the entire forest was plunged in darkness. But Kalista could see clearly. Her vision had been enhanced and so she ran without stopping. Occasionally she would look behind her, terrified that the humans were catching up with her but each time she turned, all she saw was darkness. Soon she got to the river, just as Roland had explained. Then she turned north and continued running. Roland had told her not to wait for him and she wouldn't. For a moment, she forgot about Roland and how strange he suddenly became. All she wanted was to return to the village of the mist and save Jade. He was all that mattered at that point.Soon she began to recognize where she was. That particular part of the forest looked so familiar and that was when she realized that she was on the pat

"Drop the dagger! Now!"Percival's voice was both hard and harsh, and when Kalista saw the look in his eyes, she knew he was serious."I didn't want it to come to this," she said out loud and whirled around. With inhumane speed, she brandished the dagger and slashed off the horn of the unicorn."NO!" Percival yelled and charged towards her, sword gleaming in his hand.Kalista turned and faced him, dagger in one hand and the unicorn's horn in the other. Her eyes fell on the sharp tip of Percival's sword and she panicked. In that swift moment of panic, her eyes shifted, glowing bright gold. Her wolf surfaced she accidentally shifted. Wicked looking claws and pure white fur emerged from her hands and sharp pointed canines tore out of her mouth.Percival stopped halfway, his eyes opened in horror. He gazed at Kalista's half transformation and realization slowly dawned on him."You're not human," his voice came out hoarse and filled with horror. "You're a lycan. You killed those men! Damn

Percival had just changed into his knight amour and was about to step outside when his eyes fell on the empty tray of food he had just consumed.A thought formed in his head. Maybe he could see Kalista before he began his night shift. He wanted her to get used to his presence around her. Also, though he tried to deny it, he also wanted to make sure she was in her room. He still had his suspicions about her and he felt she was connected to the beast somehow.Maybe it was all in his head. But it wouldn't hurt to be sure.He grabbed his sword and stepped outside the room.On his way to the inn, he met the other knights and he issued out orders to each of them, reminding them of the perimeters they were to guard. As the other knights hurried off to stand guard in their respective spots, Percival continued towards the inn.A second later, he halted and a frown settled on his face. "What's on your mind?" Roland asked as he strolled beside Kalista. They were on the path that led to the royal stables. Kalista had been lost in thoughts. The memories of the previous night played repeatedly in her mind amd she couldn't believe she had shifted uncontrollably again and killed people. It reminded her of what occurred in Northville before Jade took her away, how she had shifted uncontrollably and hurt people. "Are you worried about the murder of last night?" Roland asked again when Kalista remained quiet."Yes," Kalista lied, which was not really a lie. She was worried about someone discovering what she was. "Who knows when this beast would show up again. How can one be safe?""You don't have to worry about any of that," Roland assured her. "If the beast shows itself a second time, we will destroy it."Kalista said nothing else and just nodded. If only Roland knew the beast was walking beside him.
