"Sapphire, my darling, there's something I want to tell you," the woman spoke softly, running her nails into her daughter's hair. The girl hummed, though she was drowsy and her mind fogged with sleep. "You shifted quite early, dear, but your wolf will never be able to identify your mate until you turn eighteen. If you find your mate before then, you will still feel the pull, you will still see him as the most attractive specimen in creation, that is if he is older and his wolf recognises you first. Please, dear, when you do feel like that, run away as far as you can."
"Why, Mummy?"
"Because if you don't identify the sign before you turn eighteen, he would have already imprinted himself in your heart, making it impossible for you to ever escape him and thereby triggering the curse. So please, never forget this valuable information, okay?"
"Yes, Mother." The child murmured, every bit of her mother's warning going away with her thoughts as she fell into a blissful evening sleep.
_____
Zinnia yipped as she ran, digging her paws into the ground and feeling every coolness of dirt, leaves, and insects. She listened to every sound her ears could pick out, and inhaled every scent, whether good or bad. It had been nine months since I last shifted for her to stretch her legs. Then, she only stayed out for thirty minutes because I was scared that someone would find us. However, with Scarlette keeping an eye out for us, she had been running and playing for almost two hours.
My wolf deserves happiness, a lot of happiness. It was a shame neither of us would get it, but the little I could give, I tried my best. It was not my fault we were like that, it was not our fault that if anyone found out the kind of wolf I possessed, we'd be dead. We both deserved far better than a life of suffering, even if not luxurious, just better than slavery. But as life would have it, we couldn't change our predicament but hold on long enough. Then, when we are found out, we fight until we die.
‘Stop thinking about death and have some fun!’ She chirped, followed by a happy whoop. Scarlette jumped from tree to tree because her senses are more active in the air. She rode Zinnia at the beginning but decided to climb the trees instead. Zinnia was able to hunt down a family of rabbits and boar. We couldn't hunt the last time, so she was more than happy.
After drinking by the lake, we ran back to the pond. It was time to shift back. Zinnia was more than satisfied. It was the longest she had been out for three years. We switched bodies when we got to the pond. Zinnia rolled in my head, panting with delight with paws stretched forward. I smiled as I picked up my discarded clothes and wore them back on.
"Cannonball!" I cringed as the water splashed on me, mentally groaning from how cold and prickly it was on my skin. I threw her a scolding glare, one she flipped off with a laugh. Scarlette swam over to the edge, smiling so brightly, I found myself smiling back. "Sapphire, join me, the water is so good. It feels so nice, join me!" I shook my head negatively, proceeding to slip on my panties. I need new underwear. "Oh, come on! It'll be fun! Just you, me, the water…" she paused and looked at the quacking ducks, "and ducks." I giggled.
She twirled into the water, disappearing under it. I combed my hair with my fingers, tapping my foot as I hummed. Scarlette sang a song earlier, one that was stuck in my head even if I didn't know the lyrics. It was rare for me, but I was happy, slightly happy.
Scarlette broke out of the surface, gasping for air, with a delightful laugh and a whoop. "Come join me, my fellow S-mate!" I shook my head, gathering my hair into my palms to braid it again. "Stop being such a chicken, Sapphire, and get into the water. It's not that bad. After that run, you need a dip to cool off your panicking. It's over now, isn't it?" I dropped one hand and gestured for her to get out of the water.
Scarlette loved water, her temperament, as she would call it. Whenever she was inside any water, she never paid attention to anything but the water, which was a disadvantage for me. As long as she was in the water, she was endangering herself.
"Sapphire, the water is so… did you hear that?" I took some steps forward, ignoring her eyes because my focus was to get her out of the water. "Crap! Someone's coming!" Her ears twitched. "No, more than someone! Sorry, Sapphire, gotta go!" See what I mean? If she wasn't in the water, she would have heard them on time, and if I wasn't worried about her, the same thing goes for me.
"No, no, no!" I can swear I heard it. Scarlette swam to the edge of the water and climbed out, but she didn't go far because an ash-blonde wolf leapt over my head, flying across the pond.
"What the…! Aaaah!" The sudden appearance made Scarlette fall with a sloppy thud. The wolf didn't waste time, he let himself fall on top of her, pressing her down with his weight. From fear, I ran towards a tree to hide, but couldn't bring myself to run when my only friend was in trouble. "Get the fuck off me, you heavy meat!" I contemplated as I watched them with my eyes wide with horror, wondering if I should shift and help her, or wait until she saved herself. After all, she was a hunter. But with how she was struggling to get him off, I didn't know what to think.
If she was as powerful as her story described, then she would be able to get him off her with ease. I took a deep breath, closing my eyes to process the situation. I reopened my eyes and looked at them, the wolf licking her face while she cried from how disgusting it was. To get him off, Scarlette would have to hurt him, and she didn't want to. Why didn't she want to? If my memory serves me right, the wolf had a medium ash blond coat, no wolf in the pack had that colour. Another pack came to ours, for mate hunting…
My eyes widened as I finally processed the situation. The wolf was from another pack and Scarlette was his mate. It was a good and a bad thing. One, now that she had been caught, the wolf would protect her from harm as his mate. Scarlette would have a new family and more opportunities to visit me without sneaking in. Bad because she might not take the mating to a werewolf very well, and I would be punished for harbouring an intruder. But what's the worst that can happen?
"Urgh! Someone, get this thing off me!" Scarlette cried, reminding me of our present predicament. I took a step forward by instinct, but someone beat me to it. A man grabbed the wolf by its snout and yanked him away from Scarlette. He had the sleeve of his cool black shirt rolled over his thick forearms, his rosewood skin smooth and soft looking. Dark golden brown hair covered his head, somehow highlighting the cross-stars tattoo he had on his neck. I could tell it wasn't a marking, just a regular tattoo. Somehow, I found his appearance rather appealing. Well, I'm not blind to good-looking men.
"Calm down, Cole, you're scaring the panties off her. Can't you see she's human?" That made the wolf stop, tilting his head to observe Scarlette's shaken form. Wow, she's good. Her acting skill is way better than mine.
"Human? How did a lowlife human get into my land!" Uh oh. I shrunk back into the tree or tried to enter the tree, but failed. Alpha Swindells's neck snapped towards me, finding my hiding spot with ease. "You." I gulped, frantically looking around for an escape. I was sure they already figured out that the intruder Luna kept complaining about before it reduced was her. It wasn't that hard to tell. "You let a human into my pack occasionally! Who gave you the right?!" Maybe I should have been more worried about me.
"Will you stop barking and face me, I'm standing right here," Scarlette spoke, standing up but her eyes on her wet self. She had wolf slobber all over her. Her words dragged his attention to her.
"Stay out of this, human." The tattoo guy and the wolf instantly growled at him, the wolf taking a protective stance in front of her. Scarlette looked at the wolf with amusement, clearly not realising the reason he was being protective. Well, she can take care of herself.
My eyes wandered about for a means to quietly escape, but instead, they made contact with a pair of midnight blue eyes. My mind momentarily went blank. All I saw was him. The first thing I noticed about him was my favourite hair colour, caramel blond. I'd always wished I had that hair colour, been in love with it since I learnt how to brush my mother's hair. His hair was caramel blond with a few strands of dirty blond. Next, his midnight blue eyes. It was like staring into a mystical night sky. I loved the way his orbs seemed to be spinning and not spinning at the same time. He also had warm ivory skin, like the first boy I crushed on from a film.
My eyes shamelessly wandered to his lips, taking in the rather small but perfect, plump pink flesh. Within ten seconds, I already saw myself making out with him, having those soft-looking things in my mouth. I realised what I was doing, regrettably shaking the thoughts off. It was the third time I was visibly shaken by a man's good looks, to the extent of kissing him in my head. I only did that with cartoons.
That's odd.
‘What if…’ I trailed off, letting my wolf pick up on the hint. She pushed forward a little, but withdrew quickly, shaking her head negatively.
‘I don't think so, I can't perceive any fascinating scent, just his strong pink pepper, praline, and buttercream. But the tattoo guy and the wolf both smell like praline and buttercream too, which means the praline and buttercream is their general pack scent and the pink pepper is his personal scent. If he is who you think he is, I'd perceive the pink pepper with something else, not praline and buttercream.’
‘Then why—’
‘Simple, he's hot,’ she interjected, ‘and you're a living being. I mean, look at those muscles, see that body, girlfriend, it's worth dying for. Wow, is it me or am I in love?’ I giggled mentally at her response and the way her tail was wagging happily. ‘Girl, I like, I really, really, like.’ I reopened my eyes since I closed them. It was a way to hide the fact that I'm speaking to my wolf, just in case. I was surprised he was still staring.
Why was he staring? From intuition, I knew he hadn't stopped looking at me since he entered, which I was expecting to spike me. After all, all the boys always gave me the same look. However, the way he looked at me was different. He wasn't looking at me like something he must devour, or like a piece of clothing he must acquire, or with disgust and hate. Instead, he stared at me the way I stared at the kitchen after cleaning it. He was observing, trying to figure me out, instead of staring at my body or hating my face. His face contoured as he continued to stare, emotions I could detect as disbelief, jubilation, and confusion in his eyes.
From experience, the only people who gave me a look of observation were the four alphas that visited some time back. While their gaze scared me, I was surprisingly not bothered by this one, already coming to the conclusion that this was the alpha of the visiting pack. It was as if my brain was telling me that I shouldn't fear him, that even if he was a stranger and could be dangerous, I was perfectly safe with him.
My heart tightened when he tore his gaze away from me, almost like being rejected. But what do I know? I've never been rejected before. I blinked out of my daze to pay attention to my surroundings, and what I noticed shocked the life out of me. No wonder none of the oppressors had attacked me yet, they were in as much shock as I was thrown into.
What's the shock about?
Scarlette had Alpha-Junior-Ass pinned to the ground, her foot pressing his skull into the earth by his neck and a long colourless blade sword a few inches from his face. The sword had a beautiful hilt, a water dragon of icy blue and white colours. The alpha and Beta were on guard, but they couldn't move out of fear that she would lower the deadly-looking weapon.
How did he get her to snap?
What was I saying? If I wasn't used to his nonsense, I would have snapped a long time ago. Luna was somehow in tears, while his sisters shook with fear. How long have I been staring at that man?
She stared up at the stars, the fading twinkling stars in the night sky. Her head lay on her mother's lap, her mother's fingers raking through the soft threads of her hair and crooning. Just like every other day, she was in thought, thinking of her future and how it would play out; in every possible way. "Mother," the woman looked down at the small child. "Do you think we will ever leave this pack? I don't like it here," "If our destiny is to leave, then we will leave. However, I would prefer not to," the girl tilted her head back, blinking her curious eyes at her mother, "this pack is as ignorant as a blind fish. They don't care about anything else but themselves, which makes it easier to hide your identity and secret. I'm afraid that if we were to move to another pack, they might not be as oblivious to reality as this one. Some would be able to smell your lies, and if the alpha is strong enough, your wolf," "So if the opportunity presents itself, I shouldn't leave?" She asked sadl
"Monsters? What do you mean by monsters?" The boy asked his father in confusion. His father sighed, turning away fully from the window. He took slow steps towards his crying son and lowered himself to the boy's height. Reaching forward, he daintily wiped off his tears, forcing a smile on his sad face. "We are monsters by heart, for we kill with no remorse, slaughter with no soul and wield powers different from every other generation of werewolves, especially you. We are monsters because it's our path, and like every monster, we cannot love." "B…b…but Mum is your mate, you love her!" The boy cried distraughtly. "No, I chose her, but never loved her enough, or at all. If I were her mate, why then did she leave when her original mate appeared? Where is your mother if she is my mate?" He knew what he was doing, it was done to him and the alphas before him. It was a culture, their way of life; their tradition. However, unlike the rest, he wanted his son to hope, even if it would be tarni
Humming to herself, she swayed herself to and fro on the swing, using her legs as a powerful momentum to push herself forward. The other kids stayed away from the swing, just because the quiet belligerent girl was there. She didn't mind, it was better that way. The less company she has, the fewer people know about her… “condition”. Maybe one day, just one day, she'll be able to have a friend that will understand her and love her for who she is. "Darling!" The shrill voice of her mother echoed in the playground. Turning her head, she located her mother standing at the entrance/exit of the playground, waving her hand vigorously. A basket of green apples was in her other hand, swinging and hitting the side of her leg due to her energetic movement. The girl smiled, admiring the beautiful yellow flare dress on her mother's body. She made that dress for her mother. Jumping down from the swing, she smoothened her little pleated red skirt with a little dust and ran over to her mother. "Hello
She lay on the bed, kicking her legs in the air as she coloured her drawing. It didn't come out as planned, but it did look similar to what she pictured in her head. Her short hair was messed up and unnecessarily filled with pins. She hummed, tapping her chin thoughtfully with her head tilted to the side to observe her work. It was still missing something. Sunshine. She picked her yellow coloured pencil and drew a big bright sun. Once she was done, she sat up, sitting on her knees and holding the drawing book up. The little girl in a sunflower dress and bright red heels, playing under the big bright sun, was happy. She had nothing to worry about, she had no fear and felt no pain. The girl was surrounded by friends, all three skipping along with her in their floral dresses and their different shoe colours. They were skipping to her mother, who sat under the only tree in the drawing, smiling with her head tilted upward to the sun. The people in the picture were happy, free, and surround
Do you know that feeling when you are not used to something? How do you feel when something you are used to doesn't happen as expected? Well, that is how I felt. I was bothered beyond reasoning. Why was he being so nice? People aren't that nice. I was a hundred percent sure he didn't know I could shift, Zinnia was sure too. Then what? I wasn't feeling any amorous intent from him. Trust me, I would know. My mind flooded with thoughts as I arranged my clothes, and then I showered. I mean, I had my own modern en suite with a large tub and everything was good. I wasn't used to such luxury, not even when my mother was alive. After washing up, I dressed up and lay on the bed to rest my head. But then, the soft bouncy bed was just too comfortable, so I slept off with my legs hanging from the edge. When I woke up laying properly in the bed, the sheet over my body, I was stunned by how I felt. No one can ever get close to me when I sleep, let alone, touch me. I was always jumpy, always on ale
She stared at the night sky, the few stars twinkling above the full moon. The moonlight shone down on her as if paying her and only her attention. She chuckled amid her gentle crooning, turning her gaze to the head on her thighs. His soft red hair lay scattered on her thighs, her fingers rubbing the surface of his hard but raspberry-scented scalp. She always loved running her fingers into his hair. The man lay on the ground, one leg crossed over his propped-up knee, eyes closed and fingers drumming on the ground. He could tell she was trying to cover up her worry, trying to hide the fact that the news of her pregnancy wasn't bothering her at all. He knew otherwise because he knew her; he felt her. She was the other piece of his soul, his life, his dream. He knew exactly what was bothering her, he knew she had the right to be worried, but he also wanted her not to. Why worry about what is inevitable? Why worry about something that would happen in years? Having the strong urge to calm
The young boy stood in the foyer of his bedroom, staring at a large portrait on the wall. The portrait was of his mother, the beautiful woman he wasn't that privileged to know much about. He was only four when she died, and six when he found out why. Now, at eight, he was still wondering and trying to accept the truth of the reason and the curse he calls a life. He had so many unanswered questions, so many thoughts and facts that he could never and would never be able to understand, fathom and conclude. Yet, he wished he could get the answer to just one question. "Hendrix," sighing almost inaudibly, he slowly turned his head to look at his father, the only one that can answer that one question, or maybe two. His father looked at the portrait and scowled. The only true reason he still had her pictures painted on the wall was because of his son, but it was starting to get annoying. "I should get that portrait to your room, so I don't have to see it. Now what is bothering you this time?"
"A Luna is essential for a pack's survival. It is absolutely crucial that by the time you get to the age of twenty-five, you find a mate at all costs." The man educated his son with a warning tone. The boy rolled his eyes, bored of hearing his father repeat the thing he called nonsense over and over again. "I'm serious, Hendrix! An alpha can sustain a barrier for as long as he is below twenty-five. The moment he turns twenty-five, his primal nature begins to detect the lack of soul piece because then, his powers would increase and focus more on grounding it, on projecting to his battle skills. The increase in power creates a void in his soul, damaging his barrier magic because barrier magic comes from the soul. That is when his other half is needed to push the weight of the barrier to her and support her mate. I repeat it is crucial, Hendrix. You can hold it up for as long as you think you can, but eventually, the barrier would weaken to the point even an omega rogue can pass through
Gillian returned from the mission and was extremely enthusiastic. He lifted me and spun me around, causing me to squeal with excitement and surprise. He put me down after three amazing spins and hugged me so tightly I saw stars.Drix snarled and the next second, I was snatched away from Gillian and he narrowly missed a claw slap. Gillian jumped back, raising his hands in surrender. "Whoa, calm down. I'm only hugging my friend,""You're registering yourself for a beating," out of nowhere, a scrawny girl with unkempt hair jumped in front of Gil, spreading her hands wide and creating a shield with her body. That startled Drix and me, and we looked at her confused."Stay away from Charming or I'll bite you!" The girl was probably my age or older and had a death wish growling at an alpha. She also smelled like… she didn't smell like a werewolf. I'd never perceived anything like her before, but again, she was a victim of a sick experiment. Still, there were a few reasons why a girl or anyon
I pressed the suitcase hard with my weight and managed to click the lock. I sighed as I stood up straight, putting my fist on the side of my waist and wiping the sweat out of my forehead with my other hand. "Phew!" That'll be all for shoes. Now what else am I missing?I looked around, calculating everything I packed and what else I needed. Hendrix sighed for the umpteenth time. He claimed I was overdoing the packing but he didn't understand. This vacation was important to me. A girl can't be too prepared. I need to make sure I have everything and anything. "We can just buy whatever you need if you end up missing something. We'll only be staying there for a week, Sapphire. You've packed more than enough,""We might stay longer and Scarlette and I are going to explore. We already have our bucket list, and Vecoria has hers too. I'm in charge of making sure we have everything ready– hmm, what else have I not packed yet?" I mused thoughtfully, completely forgetting that I was talking to so
"So it's not like I'm getting my powers back but someone like you," she nodded. "What use will that be?" I asked as the chains fell off."Zircon has been sleeping for too long, milady, please wake him up." I rubbed my wrist. "He knows a lot about curses so he'll know how to destroy the sword," "I still don't see the use," I grumbled.‘Oh fucking hell! Why are you so unnecessarily stubborn?!’ I froze. I blinked once, then twice, and more times. I was hearing things. I thought I was losing my mind. ‘You're not, bitch! I'm back!’I looked at Vecoria in complete shock, my jaw already hitting the ground. I was shocked out of my wit but one thing was for sure, I thought I was going crazy. I had to be going crazy because there was no other explanation as to why I could hear Zinnia's voice in my head. She died.‘I died as a curse, but Selene finally did something useful with herself and brought me back as a real wolf, sort of,’I fell on my butt, too shocked to remain standing. Vecoria panic
I've never imagined my life without Zinnia. I'd gotten so used to her that I couldn't remember how it felt without her. I was reminded the hard way. I could feel the emptiness in my head the moment I opened my eyes. I felt naked and alone. The silence in my head left an incessant ringing in my ears and my mind was just there, empty. The intense feeling of emptiness devoured me so much that even when I noticed the shackles on my hands and legs and realised that I was in an unfamiliar surrounding, I couldn't care less. I was so nonchalant and unperturbed, but all I could do was sit down with my knees to my chest and stare into space. Zinnia was gone and I was alone in a dungeon, unaware of who my abductors were.I hadn't come in contact with anyone since I was locked away. My food was given to me through the doggy hole twice every day but water came once a day. I no longer had a wolf, I no longer had the powers of a blood wolf or a werewolf. I was just a luna with a barrier and healing
‘This is useless,’ Alaric said flatly as I flimsily held up the last book with a slight knowledge of Selene's offspring. Just like the rest, it only had information about things we already know. No artefacts, no books, nothing. What is the use of coming here?Jerry sighed and tossed away the book in his hand. "What a waste of time,""Tell me about it. Let's just leave, it's useless at this point," Gil grumbled. "Not even the slightest clue about any of her children who laid a curse or anything that gives a hint of it. We could be missing something—""We are not, I would know," I said firmly, dropping the hard book on the table.‘I feel weird,’ Alaric said with a whimper, scratching at the barrier of my mind. We've felt that way from the moment we stepped into the temple. Alaric had it worse. ‘Drix walk out of the library and turn right, then left, and right again,’‘Feel something?’ I asked, rising from my seat.‘A hunch,’ I gestured to Gillian t
Chills ran up and down my spine, making me constantly shiver. Hugging my body did not help. I walked out of the tree, completely horrified. The reason why Zinnia knew so much, the reason why she was so different was because she was the soul of the curse Deianira created. I was petrified by it. I had most of the important memories from my life as Milena which consisted mostly of my time with Dad, a few times with my subordinates, and the time I spent finding an end to the curse. Most of my memories were of me as Sapphire.Sapphire is more human than Milena, and humans feel more emotions, they are vulnerable to pain. Sapphire had more attachment with many, unlike Milena whose world only revolved around Sapphire's father. The point was that I grew up with Zinnia. She wasn't just my wolf, she was a bigger part of my soul and I just learned that to end the long-lasting suffering, I needed to kill her. It was basically telling me to murder my sister, mother, friend, and child.I would have
I wiped off sweat from my forehead as I walked out of the room to find Scarlette. A lot of my memories were still missing and I knew exactly where I could get them. “Scarlette, where are you?”“The garden outside. There's something strange about it,” that was where I was going. I broke into a run. Finding my way was easier because I knew every corner of this castle. I stayed in it alone for years. One thing I now remember, the willow tree in Drix's garden is a fragment of the mother tree in my mother's gemstone garden. Then the pixie who happened to have been in danger must not have been a coincidence. She intentionally appeared there to create the gemstone garden already knowing I'd arrive someday. The original was far more magnificent than the copy. The garden was more like a forest, comparable to Brasher but bigger. Then she named the centre a garden. Different trees made of different gemstones and minerals stood firmly, with bushes, flowers, and other ground crops also made out of
My heart felt strange. There was a sense of familiarity to the castle and my heart didn't feel well about it. It felt bitter. Just like the cave, the walls were filled with pictures of Hiems, the person he was before he reincarnated. But unlike Liviana's, the pictures were decent and passionate, and a woman was with him in some of the pictures. The first time I saw her, I halted and stared at her with hatred. I couldn't tell why I felt that way but I've never felt the capacity of hatred as I felt for her. She had long sleek back hair that looked exactly like a moonless night with stars scattered all over the sky. Her eyes were more like galactic starry night than the galaxy itself. It was beautiful—she was beautiful. She had plump red lips and porcelain skin, a smile that could break wars or create them. She was a real beauty but instead of admiring her, I despised her.Hiems, on the other hand, was a tall man with golden yellow hair and sapphire eyes. His body status was similar to m
Kira opened a portal and it took us to a library. I found myself standing between two tall shelves. Certainly, we were trespassing because we didn't get permission to enter. Zinnia already gave me back my body but she kept her presence dominant.Kira began walking and I followed her. "Where are we?""Library of Congress,""Library of what?!" I screamed. She threw me a glare over her shoulder. I pressed my hand on my lips and looked at her apologetically. She returned her gaze straight ahead. She was wearing fluffy slippers so the sound of her feet was almost silent. I walked silently despite the shoes I had on. She walked urgently as if she was afraid something would catch up to her."How did you find him so easily? And how did Zinnia contact you?""You seem to still be ignorant of the kind of powers your wolf possesses," she took a turn. I increased my pace to catch up with her. "You know, I haven't had sex for months,""What brought that on?""Just saying," she shrugged, looking aro
