My wolf had been quiet in my head the entire flight, everyone was quiet, and it was strange. I seemed to have more time to think, but then I just ended up wasting that time wondering why no one was talking. I hate the silence, so I was ecstatic when our plan finally landed but what I didn’t prepare for was it being this cold. When I stepped off the plane, I was hit by the bitter northern wind. It was like nothing I'd ever felt before. There was fresh snow on the ground and a lot of it, something I had never seen before. It occasionally snowed back home but it was a light dusting, maybe half an inch, but nothing like this. My wolf, Lasaya, was running laps around my head wanting to get out and go for a run.
I glanced back at my father, shivering, he just smirked at me and draped his arm around my shoulder. “I know, Grizz wants to run too.” Grizz was my father’s wolf, a massive beautiful gray wolf, the biggest I’ve ever seen. I smiled at my father warmly, hoping that it would give a little comfort in this weather as I walked with him to a black truck parked nearby with a man standing nearby. I stuck close to my father, though I knew what we were doing, I still felt so small around him, and he was still my alpha after all.
“Alpha Gabriel.'' The man smiled and shook my father’s hand. I lightly sniffed the air. The man was a wolf, not an alpha or beta, but still strong. He was probably a pack warrior, since the pack gamma would be near the Luna if they had one. I innocently glanced up at my father as he took the man's hand and gave it a firm shake. “And this must be the future Alpha Ume.” He said, drawing my attention. I smiled politely at him, shaking his hand.
“Yes. It has been a while, Brandon.” My father replied with a hearty laugh as Brandon opened the car door for me. He then glanced over at me. “Ume, this is Brandon, the Crescent Winds pack manager and Alpha John’s cousin.” He informed me. The pack manager would make sense of his scent, and from an alpha line. That could be the reason for his strong aura as well.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” I smiled, sliding into the back seat of the truck with Kreon following me. I was quickly shoved to the middle as the guard we brought from home entered the truck on the other side of me. Brandon and my father took the front seats. “Is there always snow here?” I asked, casually leaning forward to the front to get closer to the heat vents as the truck started to pull away.
“Most of the season,” Brandon quickly answered. “We are pretty far north but we do have decent summers. I wish you guys could have made it up for the first snow, it’s a special time for the Crescent Winds.” He added as he drove. I looked across Kreon and out the window at the fresh piles or snow that lined the little road we were on. Now that I wasn’t freezing, I could appreciate the beauty of it all.
“Are we meeting Alpha John today?” I asked, turning back to face the front seats again. I knew we had a lot of ground to cover in a short amount of time if we were going to be home before the full moon celebration, but I honestly didn’t know my father’s full agenda.
“Yes.” Surprisingly, the answer came from my father. “We are only spending the day here. We will meet Alpha John and his new Luna and leave in the morning.” He explained. “The crescent winds are still busy preparing for the Alpha and Luna’s marking ceremony. We are here to offer our congratulations and introductions. We wouldn’t want to burden them for long so close to the big event.” He looks back toward me and gives me a wink.
“A new Luna. How wonderful,” I exclaimed. I had always loved attending the marking ceremonies, though I could never picture myself being in one now. When I turned eighteen, I was hopeful that Kreon would be my mate. It would have been so easy to be mated with my Beta but that wasn’t the case. Now I just feel like I won’t have the time. “Congratulations to your pack.”
“Thank you, Miss Ume,” Brandon said, making a turn in the truck and pulling onto yet another snow-covered road. “Luna Feng has been amazing since she arrived. Alpha found her on his trip to meet with a pack from China.”
“That foreign alliance that we discussed at the last Alpha meeting?” My father interrupted with a question. I vaguely remembered some of that. I knew that it was discussed among some of the Alpha's, I didn’t know that it was acted upon.
Brandon had a huge grin on his face. “Yes, and he is very grateful that you and the other alphas trusted him to go put out feelers.” He said with a little laughter in his voice. You could tell that he was happy for his alpha and new Luna. “Guess the Moon Goddess really does know what she’s doing. Hope she will hurry up and send me my mate.”
My father looked back over at the pack manager. “You’re only nineteen, Brandon, you still have time. How old is your cousin now?”
“Twenty-Six” he replied. “Though he never really went looking for his Luna. Thought he didn’t need one, but now if you ask him, he couldn’t even imagine living his life without her.” Brandon just had the biggest grin on his face. It made my eyes roll internally.
“Don’t do that! We need our mate.” Lasaya was running laps around my head just at the mention of finding a mate. I shake my head to try and drown out the sound of her voice. She really wanted to run. “Stop ignoring me, Ume.” I rolled my eyes again and smiled a little at my sweet wolf. “If it happens, then it happens, but I am not going to waste our time searching for our mate. We have a pack that we have to get ready to lead.” This seemed to calm Lasaya down a little.
“Everything okay back there, Ume?” My father asked. I just smiled at him and leaned back a little. “Yes daddy.” I answered. “Lasaya just wants to run in the snow.” He laughed out loud. “I know the feeling, little one. Grizz loves running in the snow as well.” He replied then looked back at me. “We will have time to run tonight, Lasaya.” My dad reaches back and pats me on the top of the head, which makes Lasaya purr with acceptance. My wolf was just as much of a daddy's girl as I was.
We rode down snow-covered, winding back roads for what seemed like two hours or more. My legs were killing me from being squashed between the two large men on either side of me. Finally, we reached what I assumed was the city. A large stone wall with an iron gate. There were torches lining the top with patrols canvasing all around. We stopped at the gate briefly, letting the guards open them for us. As the gates slowly opened, I gasped. “A fucking castle.” Lasaya shouted in my head, running laps again. The stone structure we were driving toward was massive. It looked as if it were plucked from the pages of a fairytale. Massive columns that were built from stone, four towers, one on each corner of the building. It even had a river that ran around it with a large wooden drawbridge that was being let down for us to pass over. The sun was setting, picturesque being the west tower.
As we pulled up to the front of the castle, we passed a few lovely cottages on the front of the property and beautiful gardens all filled with beautiful blue flowers that looked as if the snow was cleared from them regularly. The truck finally came to a stop and some, what I assumed, were Omegas, opened the doors for us. I was swept up in the frigid northern air once more, but we were shown inside rather quickly. “The Omegas will take your things to your rooms.” Brandon chimed in. “Alpha John has you in the east tower for the night. He only wanted the best views for his guests.” He smiled with a cheeky grin and extended his arm to gesture at us to enter the foyer ahead of him.
I smiled, eager to step in from this bitter cold. How did northern packs survive the winters here? I wondered as I waited for my father, Kreon and our guard, Liam, to join me inside. Brandon stepped in front of us extending his arms in a welcoming gesture. “Welcome to Castle Crescent Wind.” I looked around the large room. There were staircases in front, on the left and right both leading to a small landing, then extending upwards in a grander staircase. The floors were marble, pure white as snow and marbled with flakes of gold. I bet the sun looked fantastic in the mornings from here. The walls were beautifully cut stone and in the middle was a massive fireplace that was burning hot. It was my favorite part of this room. There were big floor to ceiling windows on each side of the door and a few pieces of artwork hanging on the wall. And two sets of double French doors, one to the middle left of the room and the other set on the right opposite, both were closed, and I wondered what was hidden behind them. “This way!” Brandon motioned to the left. I guess I will soon find out.
The doors opened and light, music and laughter flooded us. My eyes squinted a little as we stepped into what seemed to be the dining hall. Again, with the same white and gold speckled marble and stone walls. It was quite different from our hall back home. It was filled with round tables, each with a little fire in the middle, and at the head of the room a long table with four fires evenly spaced along it. All the tables were filled with wolves, chatting, and laughing as they enjoyed their dinner. Brandon led us up to the Alpha’s table where I saw Alpha John. I’d met him before at Alpha meetings in the past. He was a bit older than me, tall, long light brown hair that he had tied back and deep blue eyes. He was a very fit and handsome man, who looked to be cut from stone like this amazing castle. He had stubble on his face looking like he hadn’t shaved in a couple of days, but I thought it made him look older and wise and about ten times sexier. The man was very attractive. I’ve thought so since I was a pup. I remember when I was small and he was a teenager, we would go to Alpha meetings and while our fathers did their thing I would sit outside and watch him toss around a football with the other kids. Back then, I would pray to the Moon Goddess that she would mate me with him. Thankfully, that didn’t pan out, the Moon Goddess must really know what she’s doing. I later learned that he thought he was the Goddess's gift to women, and it just wasn’t an attitude I was interested in. For his new mate’s sake, I hope he grows out of that.
“Alpha Gabriel, Ume, Kreon. Welcome to Crescent Wind.” Alpha John’s voice was loud yet welcoming, its boom filled the room, and his smile was to die for. He had a smile that toothpaste models would envy. The other wolves in the room started to welcome us in as well as we made our way to the table. Some of the people I knew. His Beta Rob and his little sister Jessy and their baby brother Cody.
Jessy was my age; we would always hang out at Alpha meetings and camps and stuff. She was about a foot smaller than me, but that girl was lethal. At Alpha training, I watched her take down wolves triple her size. They would underestimate her, due to her size and timid nature and it was always funny to watch. She had fair skin and pale blue eyes, dark blonde hair that danced just below her shoulder and a slick smile that could steal hearts in a second.
The youngest, Cody, is quite a few years younger than his sister. I didn’t know much about him except for the fact that he was quiet and liked to read. He looked a lot like a younger version of the Alpha, yet his features were a little darker. His hair was long too, and he was a bit shorter, but likely still growing. I was sure he would turn into an outstanding wolf.
The women sitting next to Alpha John I didn’t know. She was Asian, so I suspected that it was his new Luna. She was quite beautiful. She was small, like Jessy, with short dark hair that turned around her chin and mesmerizing dark eyes. She was smiling down at us kindly, and she looked extremely happy being here, which made me smile. I have heard some horror stories where men would unwillingly snatch a girl without their consent and force them into mating, though I never thought Alpha John would be that way.
“Come, join us for a meal and we can catch up, friends.” Alpha John motioned again, and we all started to head up to the front table. Maybe this trip could be fun, and I would be able to meet new people and learn how to better lead my pack.
Suddenly, I stopped in my tracks, all the color draining from my face and a low growl echoed off the walls. The hall fell so quiet that you could hear a pin drop and a voice filled the emptiness with a single word. “Mate!”
My eyes open and I take a breath. I hadn't realized I had been holding it. For a moment, I thought my biggest fear came true, but then I realized the powerful voice that I heard came from my Beta, Kreon, who was standing next to me. My eyes quickly scanned the room, looking into all the faces. It was still so quiet inside as I looked back over at my Beta and followed his gaze to the front of the room. That's when I noticed Jessy staring right back at him. I was a little to myself trying to hide it from everyone else in the room. Jessy was a good match for Kreon, but I feared that I might lose my Beta, or our trip just got a little more crowded. I laughed, thinking to myself, I wouldn't really mind Jessy tagging along, she was a really nice girl. The silence in the room was quickly broken by hearty laughter coming from the front of the table, Alpha John, his blue eyes gazing down at my beta. He genuinely seemed happy. "It's not every day that your little sister finds her mate." His voi
The sunrise from my window of the Crescent Winds pack house was spectacular. The morning went by rather smoothly. We had breakfast with the Alpha and Luna and said our goodbyes. Jessy decided to relocate to Lunarflare with Kreon, which made me happy, but we had to wait for her to pack, so we were delayed by an hour or so before we could depart. Luckily, the snow had stopped but the blanket that had fallen last night still lay untouched on the earth. My father had decided to drive when we left and I was thankful for that. I could set up front with him and now up against the two love birds in the back, though I did feel a little sorry for Liam. Once we loaded up our SUV, we said another round of goodbyes. Jessy was kind of sad about leaving her home. I understood why, of course. Finally, we were on the road. I was a bit nervous at first, wondering if my father could even drive in the snow, but he was doing well so far. I peered out the window. I knew that we had a long road ahead of u
I fell asleep shortly after my bath. I didn’t even remember lying down on the bed, I was woken by a knock on the door. “One moment.” My voice was heavy and groggy. I set up on the bed and rubbed my eyes. “Who is it?” I asked, remembering where I was. “It’s Ukina, I am here to help you get ready for the event.” The small voice barely reached my ears, if I was a regular human I doubt I would even have heard her.I straightened up on the bed slightly. “Come in.” I yawned. I looked over at the door as it opened just enough for Ukina to enter. She was carrying a dress bag and a very large makeup box. I shook my head a little at myself seeing it. She was very small and her hands were full. She set everything up on the vanity across from the bed. “I’ll just be a moment.” She said, then walked out of the bedroom, leaving the door open. After just a couple of minutes, she came back in with a silver tray that had a tea set on it. It was really pretty. “Don’t worry, It’s coffee.” She said, blus
“Run, Ume Run!” Lasaya was shouting at me, but she wasn’t in my head, she was running beside me. It was dark, we were in the woods but there was nothing familiar about them. My legs were aching, I was gasping for air but Lasaya was still screaming for me to run. “I can’t, Lasaya.” I gasped, falling to my knees. Lasaya stopped and leaned down, putting her snout in my face and licking my cheek.“Get up, Ume, we have to get out of here.” She barked. I pushed myself up to my feet, taking a look behind me. I didn’t see anything but something felt off. I was scared out of my mind. Then I heard rustling from the bushes. “Go Ume.” Lasaya shouted, then took off. I started running behind her, ignoring my body telling me to stop. I needed to rest, I needed a drink, but I couldn’t stop.I followed Ume into a clearing with a beautiful lake. She came to a stop and I stood beside her, both of us looking into the forest we had just escaped from. “Now we have to fight.” he said. I nodded to her, tryi
Jessy and I enter a dark room through the double doors we were left at. She reached around the wall and clicked on a light. I gasped a little as I looked around. “Is this his room?” I asked in disbelief. Why would this man bring me to his room? I was enraged, though Lasaya, the whore, seemed excited. I did my best at shutting her out.The room was dark, dark walls, dark curtains that blocked out the sun. A huge king-sized bed with a black comforter and sheets, it was unmade and looked slept in. The pillows and sheets were all disarrayed. There was a closet that was opened and clothes thrown everywhere around the room except for the empty laundry basket where they belonged. There was also a fireplace that looked to be electric with no fire going, and another door which I assumed led to a bathroom.I walked to the window and pulled open the dark curtains. The sun had already set so it didn’t bring much light in, but I was surprised to find that what I assumed to be a window was a double
I slammed the door to Alpha Jackson’s room behind me with a little smirk. I was confident that none of his warriors would be able to beat Liam in a fair fight. Then something hit me… Would the fight be fair? I couldn’t trust any of these wolves to fight fair. “I’m sorry Liam.” I quickly mind linked my friend.“Don’t sweat it, Ume. I’ve trained with the best warriors on earth. I train our warriors. I'm not worried about any of these wanna-be chads here.” I could hear the confidence in him and it made me feel a little better about tomorrow.“I just hope it’s a fair fight.” I told him.“Stop worrying, I can handle myself. Get some sleep”. I felt him cut the link and my mind went quiet. I considered talking to Lasaya but she would just be mad at me for my decisions. Before I could stop myself, Lasaya was at the front of my mind. “Please Ume, let me at least just meet his wolf?” She was pleading. It hurt me to feel her sadness. I questioned all my decisions as she spoke. “Even if we have t
TRIGGER WARNING - ViolenceI woke up with my entire body against Jackson, my head was on his chest, my arms wrapped around his body. I didn’t move for a long time. I couldn’t believe how well I slept lying next to him. It was a bit frightening to be honest. I felt his finger start to trace circles on my shoulder, telling me that he was already awake. “Good morning Luna.” His voice was groggy from sleep but it still made me tingle all over. I jolted away from him quickly. I didn’t want to give him the wrong idea, I also didn’t want to give myself or Lasaya the wrong idea. She was already purring in my mind, content being next to our mate. I rolled out of bed and went to my suitcase. “I’m going to shower. When’s breakfast? I’m ready to get out of here?” I asked. When I glanced up at him, he already had that goofy smirk on his face. “A shower sounds nice, I’ll join you.” He teased me.“Or!” I retorted, you can go take a shower somewhere else. I started digging through my bag in haste,
I was still lost, I, for once in my life, had no idea what was in store for my future. I was not going to be the Alpha of the Lunarflare pack, instead I was going to be the Luna to a complete jerk. All my family and friends were going to be so far away from me. My face was tear stained, Jackson wouldn’t even look at me after I spoke with my father. We were all still gathered together outside in the backyard of the pack house.Jackson was standing with a group of men chatting and there were other people sitting at tables or standing around and talking. There were quite a few men with their shirts off running laps and s few children playing together with a football. Jessy and Kreon were sitting at a table with Liam and a skinny blonde girl from the Silver Adder pack. She was in her own little world, absorbed in her cellphone and ignoring the rest of the people at the table. I decided to go sit with my friends so that I could spend some time with them before they left me here. I took th
My heart was racing as I closed the door behind me. Ruby was dead, I knew that. My father told me that he saw it himself. I hated that wretched woman. And my mom, Malia, was Ruby’s sister? I leaned my back against the wall and slid down slowly, wrapping my arms around my leg and resting my head on my knees. “Is my entire life a lie?” I asked, more to myself than anyone else. I felt Lasaya stir within but she was just as confused as I was and decided to remain at the back of my mind to let me figure out everything on my own. I held out one of my hands and opened it with my palm facing forward. I focused on the center of my hand and tried to push runic magic through the way Mobius had tried to teach me years ago. Nothing happened. I wasn’t surprised. I had never been able to use magic before. Only one of my siblings had the ability. I sighed and pulled myself up from the floor and made my way toward my office. There was only one way I was going to get the answers that I needed. I sat d
Time. It seemed to pass so slowly the last four months. Lyrie healed quickly, then my sisters returned to the Lunarflare pack with my mother. My dad and brothers haven’t been home. Jackson and the warriors from the Silver Adder pack came and went to aid my father in searching for my sister, Lily. I was just doing my best at helping the Adders recover from the loss we faced from the battle against the vampires. That and taking care of Allison. Allison was a cute little girl with a lot of spunk. She had light blonde hair and pale blue eyes and a cute line of freckles across the bridge of her nose. If Jackson and I took her out into the human world, she would probably pass as our own. I found out that her father was a pack warrior who was killed by a rogue attack shortly after Allison was born, and her mother was an omega who worked in the kitchen with Margo. She had no other family so I just kind of took her in. I never thought my first child would be the one that I took in. Jackson d
Mobius came to a stop near the daycare. The flames were rather large. “Mobi!” I yelled, drawing the bear's attention. “We need to get this fire put out.” He nodded and stood on his hindlegs. I watched as his white fur began to glow a faint blue aura. The temperature around us quickly dropped to a point where I could see my breath. The blue aura began to intensify. The moisture in the air around his fur started to freeze. In a loud roar, the frozen moisture shot from around his fur and coated the flames in a thick layer of frost, dousing the flames. In just a few minutes, all that was left was sizzling and smoke and a whole lot of frost.I watched in awe of the white bear’s power. It was the first time I'd ever seen it in action. After the fire was gone, Mobius was forced to shift back into his human form. After taking a moment to regain himself, he stood tall and helped me look through the ruins of the daycare. “Two bodies, Luna.” I heard his voice. I closed my eyes as sadness wash
“What does he mean? They took Lilly?” Sage was frantic. The phone slipped from my hand as my eyes shifted over toward Sage. “Ume, who took Lilly?” She asked again. I could hear the panic in her voice. I took a step closer toward her and wrapped my arms around her and pulled her into a tight embrace. Sage rested her head on my shoulder and started to weep. “Ume, what are we going to do?” she asked helplessly. I squeezed her tighter and fought back the tears that were trying to break through. “We have to take care of Lyrie, that’s what dad asked.” I tried to soothe my sister. “It will be okay, dad will find her. He always takes care of us.” I pulled her away and smiled at her. Sage nodded slightly at me, still crying. “We need to go home, Ume.” She said through her tears, tugging on the collar of my shirt. “No Sage.” I tried to soothe her by rubbing her dark hair. “They have an army at home, Jackson and all of our warriors are on their way to help our family.” I said to her. Sage l
Lola glanced over at me and, without even being able to communicate with my sister and her wolf, we instinctively knew what to do. Lasaya moved and positioned us behind Lola and Lyrie. I could trust knowing my sister had my back and I had hers. I also knew these vampires were here for us and I would be damned if anyone hurt my little sisters. I knew Sage was safe with Vael and Kaylin, but Lyrie would fight. I knew from the moment we heard the screaming that she was ready to go. Our attacks were precise, she would lunge, then I would after I felt her safely behind me. I never turned to look at her as long as I could feel her. That was all I needed. She may have only been a child herself, but she was an Alpha and trained by the best. Ezekiel was also near. I watched as he made short work of a few vampires as he skidded across the field. I saw another dart toward me from the woods out of the corner of my eye and wasted no time dispatching him. “Ezekiel.” I could hear Lasaya linking to
“Luna! Do you know that Miss Lyrie is the queen of all werewolves?” I looked down at the little pup pulling on my leg with the biggest of smiles on her face. I smiled back at her before reaching down and lifting her into my arms.“Is that so?” I asked, tickling the little girl a little, causing her to giggle. She nodded and pointed toward my blonde sister who was now sitting in a circle of children and reading them a book. “Yes, see, there she is now. Is she your sister? Does that mean you’re a queen too?” She asked excitedly.I put her back on the ground and led her to Lyrie’s reading circle. She took a seat and looked at my little sister in awe. “Alright little ones, I need to borrow your queen for a few moments.” Lyrie looked up at me and smiled, but the children let out a grown.Lyrie then smiled at the children. “It’s alright my love, I will come read to you again later. Your Luna needs me.” Lyrie stood and managed to get out of the group of children and made her way over to wher
I got up from the table in haste to follow Vael out of the room. I almost ran into him as I walked out the door. As if he knew my plan, he had waited on me. I looked at him for a moment, it was nice seeing the doctor again. He was only a couple of inches taller than me, he had light blonde hair slicked back against his head with stubble on his face. Vael wore a white lab coat and a device that he invented that covered his left eye, almost like a monocle. I’d never asked what it was for, he’s had it since I’ve known him. I smiled at him but he didn’t return the favor, which I didn’t expect. Instead, he lifted his hand and grabbed my hair. He yanked my hair all over my head and twisted my head around before letting it go. “Where is the hairpin that your sister gave you, Alpha?” He asked in an annoyed voice. I blushed a little. “It’s in my bathroom, on the sink. It didn’t really match….” He held his hand up in my face to stop me from talking, and it worked. “I don’t care what it mat
I was still a little shocked by everything. I got bit by a vampire, then I slept for two weeks, my sisters were here, I missed Halloween and Jackson marked me. I looked in my mirror and lifted my fingers to touch the crescent moon-shaped mark that Jackson left on my neck and smiled. I shook my head, bringing myself back to my senses. He was waiting for me to go to the Beta meeting.I glanced in the mirror one last time before I headed out of my room and found Jackson at the other end of the hall. He smirked at me and took my hand. “You ready babe?” He asked and I nodded with a smile. I didn’t know how I could be smiling this much after everything. I stood on the tips of my toes and kissed my mate on the cheek before we headed down stairs to the beta floor. It looked a lot like the Alpha’s floor except there was a room in the middle with double doors that opened into a big meeting room. There was a long table in the middle with chairs all around it. It was darkly decorated and there w
I was still sad about missing Halloween. I listened to Jackson recount telling me about what happened during Halloween as I flipped through the photos on my phone. It looked like they all had so much fun. I looked up at Jackson and ran my fingers through his hair. I wish he had stayed longer and actually enjoyed himself, but I don’t think I would be able to either if I was in his position.Jackson lifted me up and set me on top of his desk. He wrapped his arms around my waist and looked up at me with sad blue eyes. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you woke up. Vael said it was important to Sage’s spell that it was just her and Lyrie there.” He explained.I leaned down and kissed his forehead. I felt his hands move to my bare thighs, since I was only put on a purple sundress after my shower, no shoes and a simple ponytail. I really wanted to see him and didn’t want to bother doing anything else. “It’s okay. We are together now.” I smiled at him. Jackson laid his head against my thigh an
