I stopped my walk around Brook’s room to examine one of the pictures. Unable to help myself, I picked it up. A younger version of Brook sat with what had to be her dad in front of an enormous cake with several candles. They both had big grins on their faces. Her dad looked like someone mine would’ve gotten along with.

“Don’t you dare,” Brook said, her voice angry and sharp. I looked over at her, confused. “Say what you want about me, but don’t you dare badmouth my dad.”

I set down the picture. “I wasn’t. The only thing I thought of saying is you two look a lot alike. He seems pretty cool.” I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. “Brook, I know it didn’t seem like it yesterday, but I’m not like Mike. I don’t enjoy making a show of how badass I am by picking on those weaker than me.”

“You’re right. It didn’t seem like that at all,” she snapped and it took all I could to not flinch.

I ran my hand through my hair again, disappointed that she was right. “I’m not my own person right now. I have to stay on Mike and his dad’s good side. There is too much riding on my stay here but if I could have done what I wanted, then yesterday would’ve gone a lot differently.”

Her brows furrowed as she looked at me. “Would it now, and how would’ve it gone if you had your say?” Before I could say a word Brook held up her hand. “Actually, forget that. It’s none of my business. I will just take your word for it.” Her body relaxed, and she shrugged with an air of nonchalance. “After all, here you are paying me a visit when no one has dared to even speak to me. That is if you’ve heard of Mike’s rule about me?”

“Yeah, he mentioned it a few times.”

“Right. That already says a lot about you. You’re suicidal for starters. Mike will find out and when he does, the dude would seriously have kittens.”

The image of that popped into my head, making me chuckle. I’d pay money to see that. Becoming more serious, I told her. “Some things are worth the risk.”

Again, Brook looked at me as if I’d grown two heads. “And there you go right back into what the hell does that mean territory. Dean, this may be difficult for you, but can you please not talk in riddles?”

“Sorry, I don’t mean to,” I said with a wince. How could I explain this without freaking her out? “It’s just…” I scratched the back of my head. Damn, this was hard.

Her expression suddenly changed to one of understanding. “Ah, is this werewolf stuff? It’s werewolf stuff, isn’t it? And that means it’s none of my business.”

What? “No… well… yes, it’s werewolf stuff, but —”

“Dean, just do what you got to do. All I ask is you keep me and my family out of it, please.”

Irritation filled me. It was stupid, but I hated she called me Dean. I wanted to hear her say my name. Also, she didn’t understand and wasn’t letting me explain myself. Was this really how her life was with my uncle’s pack? Everything confusing and not explained because it was ‘werewolf’ stuff? That would explain a lot. I would have to be patient for now. At least we were talking. I decided to change the subject. “So your mom knows nothing about Mike and this whole Missy Mistake thing?”

She shook her head.

“Why?”

“Why do you want to know?”

“Because I’d like to get to know you more,” I told her.

“Why?”

I leveled her with my best ‘I’m serious’ stare. “Will you humor me, Brook?”

She gave me that odd look again and shook her head. “Okay. Fine. When my dad died, Mom took it hard, like hardly eating, a shell of a person kind of hard. Harry was the only thing that made her happy again. If Mom found out… I can’t risk that changing. She can’t go back to how she was before.”

Man, that was… my mate was amazing! But also damn. She was putting up with all this for her mom? “Wow. It’s pretty awesome you’re willing to do that for her, but what about you? I don’t think she would like what her happiness is costing you. ”

She looked down at her hands, the guilt obvious, then looked back up at me, now determined. “Which is why I don’t tell her. If she broke again, I know this time I’d lose her for sure. So please don’t get involved. This isn’t your problem.”

“Yes, it is. You’re —” I started to say, and she looked at me expectantly. God, I wanted to tell her so badly, but I didn’t think she was ready, so instead, I said, “You need to think about yourself, Brook. You can’t live like this forever. One day Mike will go too far. Hell, I’m surprised he hasn’t already.”

Her lips pressed together as she looked at me. “Dean, I tried to be nice. Now I’ll be blunt. I’m not your friend, nor are you mine. I’m not your good deed for the month and I can take care of myself; have been for a long time. I got a plan. I don’t need your help, nor do I want it. What I want is for you to leave. I got a lot of homework.”

Man, never in my life had I wanted to scream so much. Why wouldn’t she at least let me help her? Maybe I just needed to give her some time to see that I was real. “Alright, but this isn’t over. What’s happening to you is wrong and I’m going to fix it. I promise.” Before Brook could say anything, I left. She needed time, fine. I would give her time, but I would not let Mike keep hurting her.

I'd wondered what Mike's deal was. Strange that he has some strange "soulmate" thing with Missy but is mad his dad hits his mom. I HATE that he saw her with Dean/Ryder.

I looked at the school with a scowl. Even though I was running late, I couldn’t bring myself to go inside. I didn’t want to deal with Dean the Superman-wannabe on top of everything I got from Mike. He could not interfere with my status quo. It would ruin everything. My scowl deepened. I wish Mom would’ve let me stay home. She was callous and downright neglectful when I told her I was sick this morning. Not only did she send me to school, despite that I practically begged to stay home, she even claimed if I felt too bad I could go to the nurse.

Did Mike seriously ask me if I was interested in Dean? Well, he didn’t exactly use the word interested. I swear his vocabulary only consisted of insults and vulgarities. I would have to answer him in the right way or I’d be in a lot more pain that I already was. Thankfully, I could usually figure out what Mike expected of me. “No! Of course not,” I told him. “I know my place, Mike.”

It’s been five months since Antoine took over the pack back while Harry agreed to let me be the alpha of his better packs project. After a few days of arguing, we settled on the name Genesis pack. It’s not a large pack. We only have thirty members. I, Dean, Harry, Jon, Andy, and a woman named Ambria serve as the ruling council. As Alpha, I deal with the physical threats to the pack from the outside. Harry manages our finances, Jon, and Andy work on our security. Kara deals with intelligence with Ambria, who does public relations.Dean serves as the voice of the pack. If anyone is unhappy with what we’re doing, they can contact him about it, all the while remaining anonymous to the council. This way, they will never have to fear retribution from us. He also helps resolve internal conflicts between members and I’m not being biased when I say he does it well. He’s very good with

“Thanks, Dean,” I said as we left the infirmary. He grinned. “You need to stop thanking me for doing normal, decent stuff, Beautiful.”I rolled my eyes and hugged him as a red-faced Marquice marched up to us. “Where have you been? Do you realize what’s going on?”I stiffened, narrowing my eyes at him. “Yes, my father was attacked. I was with him now.”“I’m not talking about that,” he said. “That… that pretender. He’s been taking over, acting like he’s alpha. Do you know he’s been organizing the enforcers to search and track Brandon?”“And? Marquice, did you forget he is the alpha now?”

Wes licked his lips, glancing at the others. “Stop being an idiot, Wes. These are the new alphas. They may hear whatever you say.”“I was heading back when I saw it,” he began, grief washing over his face. “I didn’t realize what was happening at first. Your

The next two days, I spent training hard, preparing myself for what was going to be an awesome fight. What wasn’t so awesome was the amount of ‘helpful’ tips everyone thought they were entitled to give. I appreciated most of them, especially those given to me by Wes, Jon, and above all, Dean, but the ones from my old pack members or my father were, honestly, unwelcome. I finished listening to anything my father had to say, just about anything. If it wasn’t for Dean running interference, I’m not sure what might have happened.I couldn’t be more thankful to Dean. He had been just what I needed since I came. Thanks to him, I knew no matter what happened in the challenge fight, Father and my old pack were safe. My instincts told me his intentions were honest. He only wanted to protect his growing family. I don’t think he’d do any kind of ‘cleansing’ w

Dean~~~“Antoine Bell is our challenger,” the man, Marquice, said as we sat around a large oval table. The name sounded familiar to me, but I couldn’t place where I’d heard it. “He’s been in the country for ten years, and we’re not sure what exactly brought him to this country. He’s been living down in Louisiana—”Louisiana. It hit me. I knew who Antoine Bell was, and that he was challenging Nic’s father couldn’t be an accident. “Did he come with someone?”Everyone turned to look at me, confused. “What does that matter?” Marquice demanded.“Answer the question,” Nic said, though I could tell she was as co

“This is crazy,” Marquice demanded, and to ensure it was very clear, he gave me the look of bewildered horror. “Your father will never agree to this.”“Then that’s his choice, but if he wants my help, he is going to agree to those terms. I will not save his ass, just to have it all fall apart at the next turn. What happened to Father’s dignity?”He scowled at me, but took out his cell and tapped the screen. “Alpha,” Marquice said with a much softer voice when the call connected. “She’s agreed to help, but with conditions. Yes, Sir, I told her the pack was at risk. Yes, she still insisted.” Marquice glared at me for good measure, and I replied with a grin. “The first condition is Brandon may never become alpha, no matter what happens in the future, and second—”

However, this is a Golden Plains matter to be discussed,” Marquice told him. Before I said it, Brent did. “None of the people here present are members of the Golden Plains pack per your new alpha’s orders.” I appreciated the icy edge to his voice as he spoke.Marquice looked from the alpha to me. “Nic, this is a pack matter, and I’m under orders to tell you what I have to say, and only you.”“As the alpha said, I’m not pack. “So,” Dean said as we sat down on one of the couches in the small room. “What is it you want to talk about?” He sounded almost nervous.I chuckled to myself. He was nervous? Dean had nothing to be nervous about. “Well, I told you I appreciate what you’ve been doing for me since I arrived and well, I wanted to let you know that I, uh, am ready to accept you as my mate,” I told him then added, “And, I understand if you aren’t. We know little about each other, so it’s okay if you’re not sure or if you’re not ready.”When he said nothing for a moment, my nerves ratcheted up, and I ran a hand through my hair. Perhaps I was doing this wrong? Perhaps I misread things. When he asked, “You’re kidding right?” I stared back at him, not sure what he meant. He scooted over closer

What was I even thinking?”“It’s a fine idea. You only have to relax,” she insisted.Easy for her to say. She wasn’t going on a date. My stomach tightened, and I was pretty sure I was going to get sick soon. The knock on the door nearly made me jump right out of my skin. Sadie chuckled as she opened the door.“Hey, Sadie, right?
