Mavericks POV
The day I turned 16 - three years ago - was the day I discovered that Jolene was the mate the moon goddess bestowed upon me.
I was on my way to pack some important documents my father asked me to fetch when the most beautiful scent I have ever smelled drifted into my nose.
'Mate!' Killian hollered loudly in my head due to excitement when we saw Jolene.
Jolene was beautiful like she has always been and she looked at my face with a shy smile that revealed her dimples, "Hi." She waved at me which made me stop in my track
'Mate!' Killian growled in my head as a response that made the excitement of finding my mate vanish, immediately.
I have always longed for a strong Alpha female wolf but I never expected it to be someone like Jolene; Jolene is a weak human compared to the strong person I planned for my Luna position.
Jolene is weak, she doesn't know how to fight, she doesn't have courage, she couldn't keep up with the pack training, and several times the pack had to protect her from the rogues' attacks, unlike mother who perfectly stayed by father's side.
I have always hoped for someone like Mother; mother can fight during the war and she always helps father in his official position of taking care of the pack.
I never wanted someone like Jolene so I ignored her and stopped paying attention to her instead of belittling her because I know that my parents would be angry, telling me the future alpha can't act like that. Blah Blah Blah.
So throughout three years, I held in the pain of being without my mate and lied to everyone that I'd never find a mate even though Killian was furious by my actions.
I have always held the belief that everything would be like that; I would pretend that there was no existence of my mate and that I'll get married to someone strong and capable like Cynthia who was yet to find her mate also.
Until I came across Jolene in the training center yesterday. Perhaps she realized that she was really weak and was dragging the pack so she wanted to keep up her training. I sneered in my head and choose to hide my disrespect
"Mate," Jolene suddenly stopped in front of me and called with excitement, her green eyes twinkling. The beads of sweat that trickled down her face made me gulp unknowingly, "You're my mate." She said showing off her cute dimples.
"I know," I said, brushing her off in the most annoyed tone I could ever muster.
I've always tried to forget that I've been bestowed with someone stupid and incapable like Jolene but she just had to remind me again which sent a trace of fury through my spine.
"Then…" she said behind me.
I didn't realize she was trailing behind me until I heard her voice. This weak human must be interested in being my Luna so much, unfortunately, I don't need a weakling like her.
"Listen carefully… I, Maverick of SharpEdges Pack, rejected you Jolene as my mate!" I declared in a cold voice due to the loathing and disgust I felt toward her.
I seemed to hear the sound of something breaking over, it must be my heart. Killian immediately howled loudly in my head due to pain and anger but I tried to hold it in with a feigned cold and calm expression.
I watched how the trace of pain filled her eyes and it made me ashamed until she said, "I don't agree." Her shaky voice said which made all the pity I held for her vanish.
What does she not agree with? That she's a weak and incapable human who can't rule and would instead drag the pack down due to her lack of strength?
I took steps toward her due to anger and said with ruthlessness, "Do you think you're worthy of me? You're just a weak human and you're not worthy of being my future Luna. You should just go and die!" I expressed which made Killian howl loudly in my head. I hissed and was about to scold it when I realized that he had blocked me.
By now it felt as if all the power in me had disappeared, I kept feeling a striking pain that made me unable to breathe and with the sight of her pained expression, I immediately ran away.
I kept trying to forget the whole episode with Jolene but I couldn't. She was worth nothing to me but I don't know why I kept thinking about the rejection over and over again.
I was on my way to Collin's, Jolene's brother's place - yeah, I and Collin have been childhood friends - so I could get over the pain and depressive feeling when a guard came toward me and bowed. "Your highness."
"Speak."
"Alpha asked to see your highness in the office." The guard said, which made me stride toward my father's office, immediately.
Father was sitting behind the table and he had an eyeglass on his face which wasn't necessary since he could see very well. He removed the eyeglasses and placed them on the table neatly when he saw me enter.
"Alpha," I bowed to dad in respect and he motioned me to sit. "What did you call me here for?" I asked him.
"You've come of age," Father suddenly began, which made me clench my fist in excitement. I hope it's what I'm thinking, what I've been hoping for.
"So I have talked with the council to make you take over the pack during the weekend."
My heart almost flew away due to happiness. Finally! Father finally bestowed all I'd been hoping for, but I never expected it to be this quick. "That's, two days from now," I replied with a quickened breath which was caused by excitement
"Yes, I know. Since we have tested you and you showed that you're capable enough to lead this pack, we all decided on this option. Congratulations, son." Father said and squeezed my shoulder before he left me in a happy dazed state. I didn't even know when the thoughts of Jolene disappeared without a trace
"Hey Alpha. Congratulations on your upcoming post," Collin teased with a happy voice. Collin's father is my Father's close beta; Collin will also be my beta.
Collin raised his glass and I clinked my glass with his. "Thank you."
"It's such a pity that our capable future Alpha hasn't seen his mate yet. Perhaps you can arrange for the big mating festival from across different packs." Liam said but before he could finish his words, Jasher smacked his head and said, "You playboy, just say that you want to flirt with beautiful werewolves…"
Liam eyed Jasher with unhappiness, "Stop looking at me as if I'm a flirt all the time, I'm just thinking on behalf of our Alpha. Hey Alpha what do you think?"
He turned to me which almost made me jolt, their discussions about the Luna kept making my hair stand on end.
My mind can't help but drift toward Jolene; thinking about it now, she's my mate. It wasn't her fault that she was chosen, have I been too harsh with her? Why did I even tell her to die? My stomach churns due to nervousness and fear. Father and mother mustn't hear the words I said to Jolene or they'd scold me for it and if it comes to worst, father may refuse me hand over the alpha's position, and ask me to reflect on my behavior.
Liam turned to me again, "What do you th…"
Before Jasher could finish his words, Mrs. Lilian, Jolene's mother, suddenly rushed toward us with a frown.
"Mom, is anything wrong? Do you need anything?" Collin immediately stood up and asked his mom concernedly.
Mrs. Lilian was jittery and her nervousness was revealed on her face as she explained, "It's almost the full moon celebration but I can't find Jolene. Your father and I have been looking for her all day, but we can't find her in the pack…"
"What do you mean you can't find Jolene in the pack?" My expression changed and my heart began to pound in fear because I knew that if anything happened to Jolene, it was all my fault.
Collins looked dumbfounded as well because he was still shocked by his mother's words.
"Let us help…" Liam quickly spoke out.
"Really? Thank you." Mrs. Lilian said in happiness.
"Let me try to trace her scent." I suddenly said, but no one looked at me in surprise at how I could trace her scent because I'm an Alpha endowed with a sharp nose.
Trying hard to control my calm, I began to look for her scent amidst the scent of others but I finally caught a faint trace of her beautiful scent which led to the forest. "To the forest please," I said and everyone immediately followed my directions until I stopped at the cliff. My heart skipped a beat in shock but I tried to force the feeling down. Jolene had…
"Jolene!" Everyone began to call. "Jolene baby." But I couldn't bring myself to call. I was feeling guilty because I knew that whatever happened to her was caused by me.
A man's voice suddenly spoke up, "I… I found her shoes at the shore. It seemed to be washed from that direction. I think…"
"No!!!" Mrs. Lilian yelled as if understanding that Jolene had committed suicide.
Inwardly, we all knew Jolene had jumped down the cliff and probably died already because underneath the cliff is filled with water and rocks so the possibility that Jolene is dead is 99.9% but we still try hard to find her, and no one says anything.
I decided to call my wolf, he'd know better, "Killian…"
(...)
"Killian, please." I pleaded.
"Exactly. I couldn't feel her, I think our mate is dead." Killian replied with anger and sadness which made me freeze.
I caused it! I just killed my mate. I held my palm out and it felt as if I could read the murderer's words on my palm. My chest stung in pain! Why did I do it? Even if she's weak, I could have just rejected her. Why did I ask her to die? Why?!
"Mom, Please" Collin and Mr. Conan, Jolene's father kept begging Mrs. Lillian as she wept bitterly.
I felt a trace of tears trickling down my right eye but I quickly wiped it away.
Would they ever respect me if they knew their future Alpha caused the death of their beloved daughter because of his heartlessness? Would they? But thinking about it I never asked her to jump, I only said it in a fit of anger, how can she be stupid to do so? Why?
Jolene's POV It was unbearable, it was as if my body was submerged in a fire. My whole body was uncomfortable and I couldn't help gasping in pain. I've always thought that one wouldn't feel pain once one dies but it seems to be a lie. It hurts, it hurts so much. My whole body was as heavy as a lead, I tried to lift my arms but I couldn't, and no matter how much I struggled, my eyes seem to be shut with glue making me unable to open my eyes. After what felt like centuries, I was finally able to open my eyes to see a beautiful space, 'It's so beautiful. Heaven is so beautiful.' I thought as my green eyes darted around in curiosity. I tried to look around without straining my painful neck and soon I realized that I was in space. I was in a room; a very big and beautiful room. The room was painted and decorated in white, and I suddenly realized that I was lying on the bed. This is crazy, is there a bed in heaven? I thought in bewilderment."Princess, you're finally awake!" Two women
"Stop crying please." Mother comforted me when the tears continually poured down from my eyes. A man suddenly strode into the room with an anxious expression. He had green eyes, I guess I must have taken that eye trait from him, considering that mom's eyes were black."Is anything wrong?" My real father asked with a pained expression and pulled mother into his embrace. The other woman quietly left us. I shook my head after getting a hold of my emotions, "No, I'm fine. It's just that I've always thought that I was just a weak human living among the werewolves." I explained and cleaned my tears."Did they reject or bully you because of that?" Father asked with a frown that perfectly shows that he won't hesitate to raze Sharpedges Pack to the ground if I nod and say yes. I slowly shook my head and said, "They didn't. I have a mother and father who always took care of me. The whole pack treated me well." I explained truthfully Mother frowned in confusion, "But why did you fall from t
Maverick's POV "Your highness, I'm sorry but we couldn't find young Miss Jolene no matter how we search." A man told me when I leaned on the tree smoking cigarettes to get my mind off the thoughts. The four teams that father dispatched - which consisted of 7 people each to look for Jolene in different parts of the cliff - finally came back after 3-4 hours telling me they found no trace of Jolene. Maybe because I was used to the disappointment all day, I was numbed to the report."Your highness, I found a jacket." A man ran over holding a green jacket. I recognized it as the one Jolene hung when she was in the practice room. The feelings I've been trying to hold all unbottled themselves and unite to suppress me. All of it seemed to tighten its hand around my throat. The hand that held the cigarettes immediately went closer to my mouth, choosing to concentrate on how the cigarettes felt and tasted instead of letting the emotions overwhelm me. Before I could say a word, another ma
“Again, Jolene do it again” my father yells at me. I just finished sparring with one of the wolves in the pack and he won. I was getting better but this was one of the best I have performed. I got in my fighting stance and prepared to go again. This time I managed to knock him down and I could not help but shout for joy. “Good job baby girl, you did well in training today. I have good news. We are announcing your status as the next Lycan ruler tonight at a ball” my father tells me. I instantly become nervous and I think what if the pack refuse to accept me as their ruler? All these thoughts were rolling around in my head as my father and I were walking back to the royal house. “I know you were worried that the pack would not accept you but I promise you they will. You are the rightful heir and the pack has been waiting years for their princess to return home.” I nod “Father I know, I am just worried, I won’t be good enough. I do not want to disappoint you or mother.”…“I am proud
At the Sharpedges PackThe wedding of Maverick and Cynthia was beautiful. The pack was happy, they finally had a Luna. The newlyweds looked happy, though both were happy for different reasons. Maverick could not believe he had actually married someone that was not Jolene. The celebrations lasted the whole day, everyone was laughing, eating, and dancing, ignorant of the troubles soon to come. When it was time for the couple to consummate their love, they went inside. They undressed each other and made love for most of the night. Maverick looked down at his wife, he did not want what happened to Jolene to happen to her so he promised to try and love her the same way he has loved Jolene these past years. At the edge of the packTwo figures can be seen in the woods, they seem like they are celebrating their success, at least on of them looks like they are happy. “The wedding went on without a problem ad now you have a direct tie to the pack” “Yes, you have done an amazing job my love. Was
She sent a message to her mate through their mind link, “Why did you attack today? I told you not to attack until I was giving birth, then he would be with me and distracted.” She says angrily, “I saw an opportunity and I saw it, Cynthia. Do not scold me or you will regret it. She sighed, she knew she was trapped and if she spoke more, she would be punished. “We need to see tonight” he tells her. At the edge of the pack borders, Cynthia walks to meet her mate, Oliver. “Olly, where are you?” she whispers, “I am right here. What is the update on the pack right now? I heard there was an issue with the Lycan King, what did he want?” he asks. “It is a she actually, the Lycan King is a girl that we thought was dead.”“She was Maverick’s mate before I met him, now she is back, he laughed and hugged her and kissed her cheek when he saw her, although she slapped him. He has always loved her and I do not know what this means for me and the baby.” She tells him. He looks at her, she cannot rea
After Jolene and her parents left the pack, it was relatively peaceful, two weeks had passed and the sharpedges pack had let down their guard. Cynthia was one week away from her due date and was getting cranky. She was tired of the pregnancy and wanted the baby out of her so she could enact her plan.During the last week of her pregnancy, the guards reported sightings of rogues around the pack. “Rogues have broken past our defenses. They are more than last time Alpha. What do we do?” one of the guards asked. Maverick was ready for this, he had been angry for three weeks now.He had found out that Collin was in love with Jolene and that was why he punched him and told him to stay away from her, because he wanted her for himself. He was annoyed that someone would dare look at his mate and he wanted to rip him apart.Collin was still his beta but only spoke to him when it was pack business, he even refused to train with Maverick. The pack noticed something was wrong between the Alpha and
Jolene and her pack sneak up on the guards at each of their posts and kill them quickly to avoid them alerting anyone. They were sneaking into the pack so Oliver would not be alerted. By the time they had reached the training grounds, most of the rogues had been killed. Oliver heard the commotion and came to check what was going on, when he saw Jolene standing alone, he laughed. He thought she was just some stupid girl who tried to be brave, he would show her the error of her ways.He tried to attack her but she shifted to her Lycan, she was faster and stronger than him. It did not take long before she had subdued him. Her pack members had separated to deal with the rogues and rescue the prisoners. “Would you like me to show you mercy?” she asked him, “Yes, please. Who are you?” he pleaded like the coward he was.“I am the Jolene, Ruler of the Lycans, the Lycan King. Rightful Mate of Alpha Maverick
I was happy for this time I had, I used it to have another meeting with my family members, the idea was to find a solution to the vampires problem, I met and urge with those who I could to assist while sending a message to others to help before there is a shortage. The feed back was more than pleasant, we had more and more volunteers and all their blood work came out clean, before long the vampires had their kingdom in check, everyone who was poisoned with the bad batch were in no time cleared, Alaric on the other hand barely called and seemed to be very busy, I knew he was recovering and possibly scheming, but I was happy provided it was all rhetorical and whatever plan he might make possible was all faulted by us. Alaric came back after three days visiting his “mother”He drove into the compound and got out of his vehicle I rushed to him and hugged him tightly “Babeeeee! I have so missed you sooo much” I said as I pecked him He smiled sweetly at me“So how is your mum now?” I a
I woke up to the sound of Alaric voice, he was singing out loud and cheerfully as if he had won the lottery, I knew he believed he was winning in this silent battle he was having with me and my family but I knew he was in for a rude awakening I also perceived the nice aroma of breakfast, what ever he was cooking was definitely going to be very delicious He was cooking for me again I noticedHe really can be romantic but I smiled as I knew it was all a ruse, this was all a front to deceive and manipulate me but I was willing to allow him take advantage of me if this is his method of doing it. Alaric feels he is playing me whist it is the other way around, I want him as distracted as possible so he would not know how time flies. I could already smell from my room that he was cooking and that it was going to be delicious. There was a time I was worried about his food, worried that he might poison me or try to control meI was not really concerned about the control or him taking my
I knew past day I have given all my time to Blake because of how much I missed him, i know before Alaric comes for me I need to have a private meeting with all my family members, I knew this could possibly be our last moment together before the inevitable happens so I need to be sure everyone was on the same page. I made a mental connection to everyone I could, that we should meet in the dining room alone to go over our plan. I remove what I wore to bed and walk to the bathroom. I stand at the sink and brush my teeth. When I am done, I step into the shower and turn on the tap. I wash my hair and when I am done with washing my hair, I start washing my body. I finish with my shower and dry my body with my towel. When I finish, I wrap the towel around my hair so it can dry. I leave the bathroom and walk to the vanity. When I get there, I plug in my hair dryer and start blow drying my hair. Once I am done with drying my hair, I put on hairspray and I style my hair. I brush my hair until
As we stood there, disoriented and shaken, a distant sound caught our attention. The rumble of an approaching vehicle grew louder, filling us with a glimmer of hope.Within moments, headlights illuminated the darkened road, revealing the figure of a passerby. A kind stranger had stumbled upon our wreckage, offering a helping hand in our time of need.As the headlights grew brighter, casting a glow upon the wreckage, a wave of relief washed over us. The stranger approached with cautious steps; his concern evident in his eyes. It was Blake."Blake?" I murmured in disbelief, my voice barely above a whisper. I couldn't believe the twist of fate that had brought him to our side in this moment of desperation. He nodded, a mixture of surprise and concern crossing his face. "Luna, Alaric, what happened? Are you both alright?"Alaric, still recovering from the impact, managed a weak nod. "We were in an accident. The car crashed, and we need help."Blake immediately sprang into action, his quic
So, I had stayed inside, curled up in my blankets, trying desperately to distract myself with a book. However, it proved to be useless, and I ended up spending most of the afternoon watching TV in silence, occasionally sipping an occasional cup of coffee when I was bored. It had started raining halfway through my fourth cup of coffee, and the raindrops were falling onto the windowsill as I sat huddled underneath my covers, my knees pulled up to my chest and my arms wrapped tightly around my legs. A few minutes later, the front door swung open, and a mixture of anticipation and apprehension filled the air. My heart skipped a beat as I sat up, hoping it was him, hoping for a chance to reconnect. But as I heard the loud clattering noise, my hope turned to confusion, and I couldn't help but follow the sound."Dad!"The word escaped my lips before I could stop it, a combination of surprise and uncertainty. There he was, my father, walking further into the house, his presence stirring up a
They sat there for a moment. The only sounds in the room were their quiet breaths. Their footsteps echoing softly throughout the empty restroom. The ticking of the grandfather clock somewhere far away in the distance. They listened to its rhythm until Luna pulled back, resting her head on his shoulder again. Alaric looked down, catching sight of the bracelet she wore around her wrist. A simple silver band with tiny white flowers embroidered onto it. It reminded him of the sunflower bracelet his grandmother had given him when he was younger. He smiled faintly at the memory, running his thumb across the band. "It's funny. Before Mom died, she bought me this bracelet, too," Alaric murmured, his fingers tracing the delicate patterns on the bracelet lightly. "The sunflower represents hope…" he mumbled. Luna lifted her head, her eyebrows knitted together as she looked at him in confusion."Hope?" she questioned. Alaric shook his head slightly, smiling weakly. "Yeah." He paused, trying to f
She'd grown up without parents or a loving family, and though she'd managed to make some friends here in The City, she was far too lonely for her own good. He had never known any other woman who felt the way he did when he first laid eyes on her, and if this was their only chance at happiness together, then Alaric would not pass it by without making it count. He knew she liked men - he'd caught her eyeing up a few of them on occasion - and he hoped that once they got past the awkward stage of 'letting their feelings show', this could be a relationship where he wouldn't have to worry about disappointing her. There were so many things about Luna that made Alaric's chest feel tight and warm inside. Her smile, the sound of her voice, even the way she smelled. It all left him feeling so… so… "And besides," said Luna, smiling back at him with an impish look in her eyes. "Who wants a boyfriend who makes their job a nightmare?"They both chuckled, but neither could resist looking down at th
I couldn't contain my excitement as I reunited with my family, feeling the warmth and love radiating in the air. We gathered in the cozy living room, enveloped in laughter and joy. Embracing my parents tightly, I soaked in the comforting familiarity of their presence. It had been far too long since we were all together.Seated on plush sofas, we began sharing stories, eagerly catching up on the events that had unfolded during our time apart. My father animatedly recounted his latest adventures in his workshop, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm."You should have seen the intricate clock I crafted," he said, a gleam of pride in his voice. "Every cog and gear working in perfect harmony. It's a testament to the beauty of precision."My mother chimed in; her voice filled with admiration. "And your garden, dear. It has flourished under your loving care. The roses have bloomed like never before."As the conversation continued, I listened intently, cherishing every word as it painted a vivid
I woke up the next morning to my alarm screaming at me. It was so loud that I thought my eardrums were going to explode at the very next second, grumbling against my pillow.I contemplated on ignoring it or just going back to sleep after attending to it I finally chose an option that I did not thought of before I checked the time and it was six o’clock. A little bit of relief came to a sigh on my lips. I thought that I had overslept for a moment considering all the time I had procrastinated before coming to check the clock and so I stretched my hand and I turned off the alarm and sat up from bed. It was so early and my stomach was already growling, I couldn't imagine how hungry I was and so I needed to get ready for breakfast…I was craving something easy like cereal because I was already starving a lot.&nb
