“Mister Helkins will be here today so please be on your best behavior everyone,” Lady Monica told us what we all had already anticipated.
“Of course!”
“Let’s clean up the place well,”
“If we’re good girls, this place will get more money for food, right?”
“That’s right, my dear…” Monica said in her gentle voice.
“I’ll help out too,” I quickly volunteered.
“Don’t over work yourself. You almost fainted last time,” Monica said before she turned to smile caringly my way.
“I won’t…” I muttered.
Soon after, Mister Helkins arrived, and we were all lined up in front of the orphanage to greet him just like we always did whenever he came to pay us a visit. Our benefactor got out of his shiny black car that looked expensive. As always, he was dressed up well in a suit that also looked very fancy.
“Welcome! We’re so happy that you’re here. Hopefully the ride wasn’t too long…” Monica greeted him with a smile. The other girls and I plastered a smile onto our faces to greet him. Mister Helkins nodded in greeting to Monica before he turned to smile at all of us girls. His eyes scanned each girl as he smiled warmly. I felt his eyes on me and I nodded a little in greeting. From what I heard about him from Monica, Mister Helkins was an extremely kind man who was keen to work for the sake of the betterment of society. Our orphanage is one of the many other that he funds in order to help unfortunate girls without parents or girls that are going through tough periods in their lives.
“It’s always good to be here. You can all relax, there’s nothing to be so tense about. I’m just here to make sure that everyone is doing well,” Mister Helkins said warmly.
By that time, he had reached the end of the line where the youngest girl was standing. He placed a hand adoringly on the top of her head and she giggled as she smiled brightly up at him. Since I was the eldest now, I was standing at the beginning of the line that progressed down to the youngest of us here as we stood side-by-side.
“Mister Helkins will take a small tour around the place and then he’ll have a discussion with me. As he said, there’s no need to be so tense about this. Please proceed with your day as per normal,” Monica instructed with a firm nod of her head.
After smiling politely at Mister Helkins and saying our thanks for his visit, we all headed off to attend to our daily tasks. With Mister Helkins’ support, the orphanage managed to hire quite a handful of teachers, and thanks to that, we were getting some basic education. Unlike the other girls, there weren’t many teachers working here while I was growing up, so I studied mostly with Monica.
One day it would be my turn to leave this place too. If I can get a job that pays well, I’ll be sure to send back as much money as I can. Little Sally and the other girls can get more food and perhaps they can even enjoy some snacks.
That evening, we had dinner normally together with the exception that Mister Helkins joined us. He chatted casually to Monica and the other smaller girls while they laughed at his jokes. I spent a lot of time in the kitchen to prepare our dinner to make sure that it was palatable for our guest. Everything seemed to be going well and I prayed that Mister Helkins would continue to support our orphanage.
…
Later that night, I was busy reading for the sake of my studies. I had no idea what kind of job I wanted, and I wasn’t picky at that point. For someone my age, my education was basic at best if not slightly behind the other girls of my age group. Working at the orphanage meant that I didn’t get to study fulltime like regular girls that went to school. Not to mention that there weren’t exactly enough teachers to teach all the subjects. Regardless, I wanted to study as much as I could in my spare time just in case that it would help me land a better paying job.
I’ve been staring at this question for a while now and I still couldn’t figure out the answer. If I remembered correctly, Monica taught me something similar, but it didn’t quite seem to apply perfectly to this question. After a short while of thinking, a sigh escaped my lips. I got up from my seat after deciding that I should just head over to see Monica in her office before it got too late into the night. It was already evening, and all the young girls have gone to bed. Hopefully I am not too late, and Monica is still in her office.
The hallway was very dimly lit because we had a policy to save up on electricity whenever we could to save costs and also be environmentally friendly. I made my way down the familiar hallway towards Monica’s office. I’ve walked this hallway countless times before, so the lack of lighting didn’t bother me. If need be, I could possibly navigate this hallway confidently with my eyes closed.
When I turned a corner, I spotted some light at the end of the hallway where Monica’ office was. Relief rushed into me when I realized that I made it in time. She was still in her office. As I got closer to the door to Monica’s office, I started hearing some noises. I quickly walked along the hallway towards the light that seemed to have leaked into the hallway from her ajar door.
The closer I got to the door, the noises that I was hearing started to get louder. At first, it sounded like Monica was muttering to herself but then it sounded like she was in slight pain. My brows furrowed as worry started to enter my mind. Did something happen and is she hurt?
My pace quickened as I took faster steps towards the light at the end of the hallway. The closer I got, the louder were her broken cries.
--To be continued…
I began thinking if I should call out to her and then decided that I might just be panicking for no good reason. “Mo…” I whispered her name when I reached the door. Her name died on my lips as my body froze at what I witness through the ajar door. For a moment, I was confused as I stood there listening to Monica’s strangled and muffled cries. “Ahhh! Ahhh…Ahhh!” Monica’s cries filled my ears as her voice got louder than before. My eyes were glued to the unexpected scene of Monica bent over her desk with the skirt of her dress lifted up to expose her lower body. Behind her, Mister Helkins had his hands on her naked hips as he thrusted his hips against her while Monica continued to cry out loudly. What is going on here…?My hand flew to my mouth to keep my cries of surprise and shock to myself. It wasn’t like I didn’t know what they were doing but I just couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing. Mister Helkins continued thrusting his hips as Monica moaned with her lips parted. I had
**Back to the Present**“Let me out of here! Please! Open the door!” I screamed loudly as I banged on the closed door with both of my fists. If no one is out there, then I’m going to scream until someone turns up. I need to find out where I am and why I was brought here. They can’t just keep me locked up in here, right?I was scared and to get over that fear, all I could think of was yelling and banging on the door. If I didn’t do this, maybe I would have an emotional breakdown. “Why are you shouting in the middle of the night? Shut up and go to sleep. You’re annoying all of us!” a woman yelled back at me. There’s someone out there on the other side of this door. I felt more relieved more than anything that I wasn’t the only one here in this place. According to what the woman just said, there should be many people here. “Please let me out. Can you please unlock the door?” I said loudly to make sure that she could hear me through the closed door. “Don’t you think you’re the louder
The sounds of people moving about and chatting woke me up. My eyes snapped opened and I immediately began panicking at the unfamiliar surroundings. I was in a room that I did not recognize and a bed that wasn’t mine.It took a short moment for me to realize that life had changed for me, drastically. I was no longer living my peaceful life with the other girls at the orphanage. The clock that hung strategically on the wall at the foot of my bed told me that if I didn’t hurry, I was going to be late on my very first day of work. I bolted up in bed, surprised at the strength that had returned to my body. The deep sleep from last night truly helped and I felt very energized.Life might be better. I still found it hard to believe that Lady Monica and Mister Helkins worked together to sell me. However, when I recalled seeing them together that night, a shiver ran through my body as my thoughts darkened. Time didn’t stop and wait for me to gather my thoughts and I quickly realized that I did
I glanced over the tall and thin blonde young woman standing next to me and I could see that she felt uncomfortable. After hesitating for a brief moment, I decided to go next.“My name is Mila. It’s a pleasure to meet everyone. I look forward to working here…” I said before smiling a little.“You’re the last one,” Madame Cassandra stated after nodding briefly at me.Our attention turned to the girl with straight blonde hair. She seemed very timid as her pale blue eyes stared back at us while her lower lip quivered visibly.“I…I’m Selena. It’s nice to meet you…” Selena finally said softly as her eyes darted all over the place.“Follow me this way. I will personally teach you how things work around here,” Madame Cassandra said before leading the way.We followed her down a narrow hallway before she entered a room that resembled a small classroom. She gestured with her hand for us the take a seat at the small desks in the room. After seeing that the three of us had taken our seats, she b
“Why does the garden have to be so big? Just how many of these leaves are we supposed to sweep?” Jessie complained before she started pulling at her braids in clear frustration.“It’s not that bad. If we work together, we should get everything done before sundown,” I replied before smiling a little at her.Compared to other work that we could have gotten, I guess this wasn’t a hard task at all. On top of that, the weather was fine. The sun wasn’t too hot, and the breeze felt pleasant enough. The tree that shed leaves still provided us with shade here and there for cover.“Let’s chat to pass the time. I’m bored out of my mind…” Jessie suggested.Salena was a fast but silent worker. She didn’t speak much and was very shy; however, she was a very efficient worker. Her height and agility seemed to help her a lot.“Ok…” I replied while Salena didn’t say anything.“So, why did you two decide to come work here as maids?” Jessie asked.“Well…” I murmured.Should I tell them that I was brought
“They say that the third prince is like an angel sent from the heavens above to mess with the hearts of women on earth. Prince Florian is so beautiful. His red hair shines like rays of the setting sun and his green eyes sparkles like the most precious emeralds,” Salena said with a faraway look in her eyes.Great, so this prince Florian supposedly looks like an angel…“Have you seen him?” Jessie asked excitedly.“No, only in photos. I’ve seen all the princes’ photos. I guess just like other towns, it’s very common for people to hang their photos up on walls to show respect,” Salena said with a smile.“If prince Florian is an angel, then prince Darius has got to be the dark prince of knights or something. Apart from the dark mystery and complications surrounding his birth, prince Darius is known for being as cold as ice. He’s strict and doesn’t talk much. However, he’s probably the most respected out of all the princes,” Jessie said, and I could hear the respect in her voice for him.“P
“Umm…you’re looking for me?” I asked softly.“Madame is asking for you. Go to her office, she’s waiting for you there,” Claudia replied curtly as her eyes glared at me.“I’ll go now. Thank you for coming to get me,” I thanked her before bowing my head a little to excuse myself.“No need to thank me. I didn’t come here because I wanted to…” Claudia muttered darkly as her eyes narrowed dangerously at me.She turned on her heels and quickly made her way out of the garden before I could say anything else. The three of us watch her leave. Claudia truly stood out from the other maids. For one, she was very beautiful. Her long honey brown hair was curled into neat locks, and she had brightly colored make up on, especially her cherry red lipstick. Although she was supposed to be a maid just like the rest of us, something about her made her feel like an important person.“I have to go first. I’m so sorry about this,” I quickly apologized.“Don’t worry. We’re almost done here anyways,” Jessie s
“That will be all. Head back to your room now,” she said before walking out the door.I followed after her out of the room and after going our separate ways, I headed back to my room in the maid quarters. The moonlight shining in through the window provided more lighting to the hallway. It looks like it’s going to be a full moon soon. Perhaps it was just my own imagination, but I thought that the moon never looked as beautiful or as big as it did from where I saw it back at the orphanage. Although it wasn’t a full moon yet, the moon here in this kingdom looked much larger than the moon that I observed from the windows of the orphanage.Looking down from the window that I walked past, I could see the garden below with its vast maze of rose bushes. It was dark and I couldn’t make out many details or colors, but I already knew that the roses were a deep dark red. It was evening, the sun was down so as per the rules, I should hurry and head back to my room. The palace seemed to be a very
