Sabrina

I glance into the kitchen behind the dining hall, trying to be surreptitious as I load up my tray with coffee and pastries and fruit. I mean, they leave the window behind the buffet open so that students can look in and see all the Gammas and Deltas cheerfully laboring for their benefit. But I don’t think anyone here actually looks.

Still, I’ve got my eyes peeled for two figures – one tiny and blonde, the other stupid and gigantic and annoying.

But neither are there.

I sigh, turning away, heading for an empty table by the window – one of the best spots, not usually open. But I’m very early to breakfast today, which means I get the choice of best spots while the rest of the students are still filing in.

I settle my tray on the table and sit with my back to the window so I can keep an eye on the door. As I watch, quietly making through my little bowl of s

Sabrina“All right, cool,” Kai says, frowning a little as he turns away. “See you at…dinner. Bye, Betty.”“Bye, Kai!” I call, perfectly friendly, waving as he walks away to their usual table, looking a little lost without his Alpha Prince to sit with. I turn back to Max, letting concern turn down my lips, cocking my head to the side. “What’s up, Max?”He sighs, shaking his head, looking at his untouched food and not up at me as he slumps in his chair. “Someone attacked Rhett.”An attack. Hmm. There goes my hope that Rhett would assume he just got drunk on some kind of romantic liaison and woke up with a hangover so bad it comes with a side of mild memory loss.I don’t date in this school, Max, because I’m a fucking Delta. The girls here are Celestials – they don’t even look at me.I go still as the words echo in my

SabrinaMy knuckles don’t even touch the door when again it opens. I stare at the little man in the doorway to his office, my brows raising, fist hovering in the air. “How do you keep doing that?”“Doing what?” he snaps, raising his chin and looking down the edge of his beaky nose at me.“I didn’t even knock, sir,” I say, a smile spreading over my cheeks as his eyes narrow. I drop my hand.“As I said before, Miss Spencer, you are very loud.” Arzento sighs and shakes his head, turning back into his office but leaving his door open. I take it as all the invitation I’m going to get and step into the office behind my professor, quietly shutting the door. I inhale deeply, relishing again that scent of books and toffee, instantly feeling more relaxed.Which is ridiculous, of course. A great deal hinges on

SabrinaArzento sighs and flicks his hand at me in dismissal. I jump up from my chair, striding for the door, absolutely delighted. He didn’t kick me out! I can stay and keep studying! He didn’t give me any compliments on my work but who cares – Arzento has accepted me as his student! The first in years – maybe decades.Me! Or, well. Betty Spencer. But whatever – that doesn’t matter, I’m very aware that this work is mine.“And Miss Spencer?”I look back at my professor as I twist the handle to the door, pausing. He looks at me quite seriously, a teeny tiny smile pulling up the corner of his lips. “I expect fireworks. Absolute academic fireworks, young lady. I’ll expel you before I let you embarrass me with substandard work.”I laugh, unable to help it, and his smile dee

Sabrina “Betty,” Oliver gasps. I whip my face up to his with a frown as he gestures frantically at Rhett. “If he tried to hurt you then I’m not going to –““Do you seriously think this man is a threat to my safety right now?” I ask, dry, nodding to the gigantic incapacitated lycanthrope at my side. As if to prove my point, Rhett groans, his head lolling to the left as he gags lightly. I hastily pull my hand from his cheek.Oliver sighs and shakes his head but turns, dashing into the library to make the call.Rhett groans, trying to focus on me again and failing.“Why are you even here?” I whisper, kind of frustrated with him as I settle at his side, grimacing and thinking that if he barfs on me I’m definitely killing him, no questions asked. “You’re sick Rhett – you s

CosetteI lift my eyes to glance around the room, my hands moving on their own steady rhythm as I press and knead the dough, humming my little spell for good health and wellness under my breath. The same one I sang to Rhett last night, but softer and steadier now – infusing it into the bread with every press. My gaze immediately finds Matty – how could it not? He’s by far the tallest person in the kitchen right now, smiling broadly as he chats with Juliette, one of our sous-chefs as he carries a huge bag of flour on his shoulder toward me. I laugh a bit, interrupting my song, but that doesn’t matter. I’ve hummed it enough now that the bread is all lovely and fluffy with health and wellness. I shake my head at my big cousin, who already fits in so well.Matty does that, though. Everywhere he goes people seem to like him immediately, flocking to his bright cheer, his easy humor.Which is

CosetteMy eyes dart immediately to the spot where Demrick’s dirty finger is pressed and I grimace, itching to grab a cloth and wipe it immediately even though I know that’s not going to help anything right now. “Dem,” I say with a sigh, shaking my head. But he ignores me.Matty sighs too, tilting his head as he studies Demrick. “I’m not doing anything. I’m just…scooping flour. As requested.”“Well, you can leave off that task and go do whatever is next on your list,” Demrick snaps, letting the hint of a growl color his tone. “I’ll do that for Cosette. And whatever else she needs.”Matt’s brows knit together, his face scrunching like he thinks Dem is being ridiculous. Which he is. “Seriously?”“Yeah,” Demrick snaps, taking a step toward my cousin. “Seriously.” He holds his h

But…if I can give you some advice? From someone who cares?” He places a hand on his chest and looks at me significantly, clearly asking me to understand now that he’s speaking as my family.I sigh and nod, dropping my eyes in embarrassment but giving him permission to go on.“I think you need to stay away from that guy, Cos,” he says softly, his voice worried. “He is…trouble. And I know you’re a goddamn sweetheart and see the best in everyone but kid…” I raise my eyes to Matt’s when his words trail off. “He’s bad n

SabrinaMatty crosses his arms and starts to walk toward me. “Are you like…aware of this Demrick guy?”My brows raise further. “The big boy who works in the kitchens?”“Ya.”I take a deep breath, kind of intrigued. I have noticed Demrick – even beyond his crush on my cousin. My memory flashes back to the way that he snuck a glance at Max and me as he left dinner for us last night – something he absolutely should not have done. He’s someone who pushes boundaries – which can be trouble or can be…useful. “I’ve noticed. Why, what’s up?”Matty comes close and shakes his head. “He’s got it bad for Cosette and not in a good way.”I frown. “What do you mean?”“He came at me hard for just talking to her while I did my job.”My frown just dee

I just…didn’t know you intended to get close to him in that way.”“So, when I said I was going to his dinner parties…”She shrugs. “I guess I just thought you meant as a friend. Or like, a spy. It never even entered my mind that you’d want more. I mean…” she lifts her eyes to mine now. “He’s your enemy. I watch as he shifts in to his usual calm demeanor – tucking his Lupa identity away, becoming again the hapless nice guy who is so helpful in the kitchen. “I told him not to.”Juliette turns her attention to me, eyes flaring. “Is that true, Cosette?”“Um,” I say, hesitating but then shrugging. And while that might be just him liking her pastries and being kind to the employees of this institution, that sort of thing means something to girls like Cosette who are so talented and so often overlooked.I remember back to the night I tried to poison Rhett –And the charm she used on the water – the rhyme so simple, but flexible enough that a powerful Pancibus like her could…could use it every day, bake it right into the bread…Bread that Max eats every morning and evening. My jaw drops when I realize that…Cosette has been protecting him. Protecting Max from any poisons that someone might slip into his food – into any of his food, as long as he eats her bread along with it. We’re all well aware that this is a farce - I’m small enough and he’s big enough that if Rhett wanted this door shut it would be. But I play along, pushing hard, enjoying myself. “Your thesis statements are crap!”“They’re fantastic!”“You need me!” I give one final shove and the door gives, Rhett smirking at me on the other side.He looms over me and points a finger at my face. “You keep your little sparkly pink pen away from my work tonight, Spencer.”I wrinkle my nose at him, all of my teeth bared in a wide smile. “Just try
